These days always seemed the longest. An odd notion, given the summer solstice was months ago. But something about the time of the year seemed to just put Falque in a dragged-along mood. Like there was a never ending pile of tasks for him. And part of it was true. For after his work at the health labs, his hobbies, his schooling (or what little he was involved in schooling), his other schooling off-campus...he had more schooling. Only he was the teacher.

Falque would be found in the Enso Café that late afternoon, his talismans dangling inside his cloak, obscured from view. In front of him was one of his more favourite meals...poutine and some black tea. Poutine always had a special place in his heart, and wherever he went, he was sure to move a leg or two to try and accommodate the recipe. Sure, it was disgusting to many people, and it even looked disgusting, but Falque thought it was delicious.

With another forkful of poutine and a small periodical in his other hand, Falque was very much inattentive of the world around him. Not that he needed to be. When they asked him to teach them his power, he just told them to show up here and walk up to him. If they didn’t, then oh well, he was not going to worry about missing them. If they did, then all the better, for bringing his material all the way out to Enso was tedium enough.

Who were his students today? Falque was somewhat familiar Calvin. Maybe more familiar than we would like to be. The two of them happened to live in the same hall, or at least supposed to...that hall was a mess, in all truth. Beyond Calvin was Aishou...she was apparently a shadow user as well. Hopefully teaching her would be a cinch. Unless she proved...difficult in personality. Well, Falque would just have to wait and see.

He took another bite of his poutine. He’d need his energy for this evening, he surmised.

Aishou was taking her time preparing for her days activity. She had put on sensible shoes and a shirt one of her brothers had given her with Wreck'em Tech on it. She also wore her favorite shorts under her skirt. Her black hair she left loose and today she only wore lip balm. Checking over things one last time she left her room and made her way to the cafe. She entered the cafe and quickly spotted Falque. She had never actually met him but had heard about him from others. So she made her way over to him with a friendly smile on her face. As long as he was the teacher she had no plans to try anything with him.

She picked up a light lunch of a cheeseburger and a cherry coke. With her lunch she made her way over to her new teacher. “Hi I am Aishou I have heard a lot about you.” With the light smile still on her face she sat down across from him. Since she really did not know what to say she remained silent and took a bite from her lunch. She waited and watched time would tell her what she needed to know and everything had a proper season to be revealed.

It had been a long time since Calvin and Falque had done anything together. Longer then he could actually remember, honestly. But then again, he did have those memory issues so that wasn't too unexpected. But, from what he did remember of Falque was that he did seem pleasant enough to be around, if a bit distant. At least being around him wasn't setting off any warning bells like it did every time he got around Sevens.

So, when he caught wind that Falque was doing some mentoring, Calvin through some caution to the wind and decided to see if he'd be willing to show him any fun little techniques. Granted, he didn't know if that was possible, but it would be worth a shot. That and he wanted to get to know the guy better. Although it did make Calvin wonder somewhat if he had or knew of anything that he could teach others. Nothing was coming to mind, at least nothing that he thought was learnable by others. But, hey, ya never know.

But that was neither here nor there. What was here and there was that he was gonna meet them in the cafe. Easy enough. So at the appointed date and time, Calvin headed for the cafe to look for his fellow assistant to the Crimson Horn. It looked like another student was already there with him, so perhaps they would be working together.

“Hey Falque,” Calvin said, “It's been a while.”
“How's the head?” A different Calvin asked.
“That really appropriate?”
“Not really, but its ****** funny.”

So the first to arrive was the one Falque had never seen before. He spent another forkful of his lunch, listening to the woman carefully while his eyes remained downcast. In the daytime, Falque was growing a preference to use his ears over his eyes. After all, the yellow cloak had a tendency to obscure his vision. He did not pay her much regard as of yet, but a curious sentence did reach him. It made Falque a little wary.

“Hopefully not too much,” Falque replied, the somewhat jovial tone in his voice betraying the meaning behind his words. It was not a mere joke, not for him. There were some things to be learned of Falque LeFer, and many, many things that should not.

Falque lifted his eyes now, the sunglasses hiding his blood red eyes. Aishou was a rather presentable woman, that was for sure. Though Falque also had to admit, many women seemed to bear such fruit, including his own sister. Including his own girlfriend. And Aishou herself was not the only hourglass figure he taught. In retrospect, he was a little surprised Claire did not offer him a harder time. Maybe he simply brought out the better in them. Heh.

“A pleasure to meet you, anyhow. I assume you’re here to learn from me? What-...ah,” Calvin’s arrival interrupted Falque. Or rather, all two/four/God knows of them. Not all of them brought pleasantries either, the second one offering a wisecrack. “Well enough to not appreciate your humour,” Falque retorted. He quietly scooped up his last bit of poutine, enjoying the last bits in a sanctified silence that ten thousand Calvins could not disturb.

And only once he was finished did Falque begin right into the lessons. “Anyhow...Calvin, this is Aishou. Aishou, Calvin. You’ll both be learning from me today and I expect cooperation between you two.” While Falque did not expect any hardships between them, it was important to note the gravity of his dictation. Their destination was a dangerous one. Falque stood up, moving to the other side of the table and glancing at the both of them in turn, motioning them to follow. Hopefully they were not too hungry, for there was no time to dawdle. The light of the day was limited.

“We’ll be heading to the swamps. There’s a particular little temple there...it’s a good place to use for this.” What this was would have to wait until another time. Falque continued walking right into the trail, not even noticing whether Aishou or Calvin were following behind him. The walk was long, but Falque’s words were very intermittent. By the time he’d finish explaining everything, they’d already be there.

He posed his first question, “So...what power in particular did you want to learn? Seeing in the dark? Moving through shadows? ...Something else?”

Aishou smiled when Falque said he hoped she had not heard to much. Then another person arrived Aishou did not really know a lot of people at the school. This one seemed rather odd as he was talking to himself. As Falque finished his lunch and rose to his feet Aishou finished her burger in a few large unladylike like bites. She then washed it down with her coke and quickly caught up with Falque. As they moved along the trail Aishou was glad she had gone with easy to move in shoes and not heels. When they arrived Aishou looked around taking in her surroundings. Then came the question of what she wished to learn. “I would like to learn to move through the shadows.” She waited there was nothing else to do after all she was here to learn and she could be patient.

Yeah, the joke was a bit out of taste, but it was an easy one to take and so Calvin did. Falque didn't seem to appreciate it though, but that was also to be expected. Still, it was good that that Calvin was getting out a bit more, even if it was a low-handing joke fruit. Ah well, he'd make it up to him and check out his next concerto or something. A better gesture, so to say.

He was introduced to the lady, named Aishou. Which, while the joke was there, Calvin decided not to take that one. First one was free, but after that, then you start looking bad. Anyway, she was to be the partner with him today, which would be interesting, working with someone he had never met before. But, it would give him a chance to learn about another person.

Anyway, there were off to the swamps on the island for whatever it was they were going to be learning. It was quite the walk, but it wasn't a hard one. Just sort of exhausting if you weren't used to it. Sort of a low-stamina type of person. Would probably be a good hike if it wasn't for the fact that the swamps were kind of dangerous. But, then again, what swamp wasn't?

By the time they had gotten there, Falque had finished explaining a few various things that honestly Calvin should have been paying more attention to. But, when you got four people in you, mental conversations get kind of loud. The reptile did snap back to reality just in time for Falque's question towards them.

“Same.” Calvin replied, “That seems like a fun little ditty to do.”

“The hard one. Excellent.” Falque grinned a little. He only ever manged this successfully...once? But that one persona happened to be Avery. Honestly, their chances were pretty much up in the air. Falque was not going to to press on the very possible failure and what it would entail, however. Learning was part of the fun.

It was not much longer before the three of them reached the decrepit temple Falque mentioned. It was a long time since his last journey to this old place. Still, he remembered the routine well enough to not bother him. “Here we are. I need to prepare something first, a little potion of sorts. I’ll be back in a bit.” With that, Falque left the two of them to familiarize themselves with the place, and with each other, while he himself set to pulling out ingredients.

The powder, at least, was not as hard as that god-forsaken tea. When he said the hard one, he meant for them. Heck, this one didn’t even need his aid after a while. “Oh. Right. I need you two to come up with a place you want to go. A place you’ve always wanted to visit.” Once they had managed to collaborate on a favourite vacation spot of sorts, Falque would return with freshly ground powder. It resembled something of finely ground coffee beans.

Darkness now overtook the the temple. “Excellent timing. The ghosts are here.” As cryptic as his words were, there were no spirits just yet to haunt the two students. Maybe Falque was speaking metaphor? It was impossible to say. Falque handed the two of them access of the bag, “Take a pinch, and drop it on your tongue.” Once they had done as he instructed, Falque would wait a minute. For now, nothing would seem to change...

Oh goody. Something hard. As long as it didn't involve Sevens, it couldn't possibly be THAT hard. It was probably just Falque messing with them, and probably just a smack back at the head injury joke. He had to admit, that he had it coming. But, again, was all in good fun, so there was really nothing to worry about that much.

Well, they had soon reached some sort of horrible, old, and mysterious temple of doom deep in the swamps. A place so secluded and hidden that Calvin didn't know about it. Not like he went into the swamps often though. But whatever. Mysterious temple of mysterious mysteries. And the mystery was probably doom. Doomy dooms of doom.

Well, now for the next part of the deal, they needed to think of a place that they'd like to go. A place that he would always want to visit. Hmmm, where did he want to go? There were a lot of places out there, as there was a big wide world to see and explore. And he did see a lot of it a while ago, but nothing really for any extended period of time. Now that he thought about it, he did want to see the Great Barrier Reef.

Calvin looked over to Aishou. “How about the Great Barrier Reef? That's a place I always wanted to visit. How about you?”

Falque then gave him a bit of powder and instructed them to place it on their tongue. And right now, there were going to be ghosts. Lovely. Was everything on this island haunted? Seriously, he was going to start carrying around a Camera Obscura around just in case this entire island turned into Fatal Frame or something.

Well, might as well go with it for a while. This seemed like it was part of the test or whatever it was going to be. So, Calvin took the powder he was given and placed it on his tongue. Well, now to wait for the next step in the training.

Aishou though for a while about places she wanted to visit. When Calvin asked about the great barrier reef Aishou smiled. “That does sound like a nice place to visit.” While not what her first choice would have been Aishou went with it. Aishou did not like the sound of ghosts but then again maybe they were like Casper. She really hoped they were not like Casper's uncles. Although the stinky one reminded her of all seven of her older brothers. As Aishou placed the powder on her tongue and closed her mouth. She could not help but wonder what would happen next.

Falque sat down on one of the benches and sighed. They at least agreed to a location, but the choice was rather...unorthodox. Even the surface of Mars would’ve been more feasible. Oh well, it should still work. He nodded after a moment, “Alright, that sounds good. Follow me, please.”

Falque took a set of decrepit stairs to the top level of the temple, climbing up a more recent ladder to the very roof. Once they were outside, it’d become immediately apparent why Falque had them choose somewhere to visit. No longer were they in the swamps. Instead, the temple now resided right on the coast of Queensland, in front of the Barrier Reef. The tide gently crashed against the foot of the temple, slipping through onto the bottom floor. “Here we are.” Falque rested himself against the back of the temple’s stone wall.

The change in location was not the only thing, however. There was indeed a sun up in the sky, but it radiated a much different sort of a light. It was blood red, and the sky itself seemed entirely black in contrast. Everything seemed...darker. Aside from themselves, everything seemed to have a slightly inverted colour, though the hue never really grew brighter than the sun itself. The colour white no longer seemed to exist in this land.

“I call this ‘the Land of the Red Sun’. Sheer exposure to its rays will allow you to the means to learn my power, in a way.” Falque whipped forward like a black streak, several afterimages leaving behind the trail of his movements. He pointed towards the Pacific Ocean, “Calvin, since you don’t have any prior experience with the shadows, I need you to find a totem. A totem being anything that could carry a bit of sentimental value out of that sea. Something to remind you of this place.” How Calvin would survive breathing underwater was entirely his project. He had multiple heads, right? Should be simple.

Falque then turned directly to Aishou, “You’re a more special case. Hmm...” Falque had never taught a darkling before. How much did he really have to teach her? He looked around the beach. There were many black figures dotted around the beach. They looked like people, but without any features, like shadows. They seemed to pay no attention to the out of place temple, nor to the people inhabiting it. In truth, they were very much alone. Or so it seemed.

“Calvin, you go on ahead and search by yourself. I’m going to work with Aishou a little more personally.” Waiting for the Hydra to leave, Falque quietly climbed down the temple and onto the beach. Once Aishou had caught up, he’d continue, “What kind of powers do you have, anyway? It’s probably easiest for me to just apply what you know. And once you’ve been exposed to enough of the Red Sun, you should have the means to meld into shadows.”

((OOC: For Bones, you have free reign to describe your journey in the Reef. RP right up to finding your totem, and stop there.))

Okay, step one. Taking mysterious powder was complete. Now it seemed like they were going onto step two. Once again, Calvin followed behind Falque as he lead them deeper into the temple in the swamps. Now they were going up the stairs and finally to a ladder. The ladder was much more recent however, so it must have been something that Falque himself had just put in. Well, up they go.

And now they were in some strange, alternate reality version of Australia. Of course, now that Calvin thought about it, it probably would have been better to pick a place he was familiar with. He really should have known better then to expect some sort of vacation in all of this. But this wasn't too bad, at least. Although the colors were off. But apparently that's what made it alternate.

So, blood-red sun and darker colors notwithstanding, it didn't seem to be that bad of a place. Not a place that he'd want to live in, but still alright to be around. But he wasn't here to relax, apparently Falque sent him here to find a totem. Somewhere in that sea out there was something that would have sentimental value to him, and he had to go and find it. And he had to go out alone, because Falque needed some time with Aishou.

“Alright, fair enough.” Calvin said and headed out towards the alternate Pacific Ocean. So he needed to find a totem. What was something that had sentimental value to him? If it was something he had to carry with him, then it couldn't be a person. And something to remind him of this place. Well, now he needed to think about that. Why did he want to come here in the first place?

Well, he always wanted to see it, that was one. And he wanted to spend some time around. But now that he thought about it, when he was part of the group after Carmen, he got to spend less then a day here. Which, that amount of time only wanted to make him spend more. But, it was a flip from his lucky coin that resulted in that happening anyway.

His lucky coin.

That's right. He carried that thing with him all the time. So much that it became a habit of his. He checked his pockets, but much to his horror, he couldn't find it on his person anywhere. He knew he had it with him. He always had it with him. What could have...?

Well, that was a stupid thing to ask. It almost seemed like reality changed just for that to happen. His lucky coin was out there in the sea somewhere, and now he had to find it. “Alright, are we up for this?” Calvin said to himself as he went to the edge of the water.

“We should probably all be out, extra eyes and all that.” He replied.

“Good thinking.”

Calvin soon started growing larger, changing into his largest form as he fell onto all fours as he transformed into his natural hydra form. The other parts of himself soon sprouting up as well. “Alright, each of us take a cardinal direction and keep an eye on the other's blind spots?” One of his heads said to the others

“Sounds good.”

“Alright, and remember, its tiny, so we'll probably have to check for reflecting light.”

With that said, the massive reptile dove into the water and continued into the briney deep.

It was a lot darker underwater then Calvin was expecting. But then again, they were under a red sun. Red suns were usually bigger then yellow ones, but they didn't release as much light. Not even Superman could live under a red sun and still be Superman. So he'd have to be looking for a tiny bit of metal in a much darker condition.

Soon, they were out to a deeper part of the reef, where even at his larger size, he wouldn't be able to keep his feet on the ocean floor and his heads above water. Once he was at that point, each of them took a very deep breath before diving under into the dark abyss.

It was at that point that he was so grateful to the regular world for having light, because it was almost pitch black under the water. Even with all of his heads looking, they could barely see anything in front of them. Okay, it seemed like this was going to take longer then he thought. And he already thought it was going to take a while.

“This is ridiculous.” One Calvin mentally shot to the others.
“You didn't think it would be easy, did you?” Another one replied.
“He could have at least given us a flashlight or something.” He answered.
“Wouldn't that defeat the whole point of the thing?”
“Yeah, and besides, were here for darkness, not for light.”

Things were going slow, although he was enjoying the water. Although he did kind of wish that he could see more of what was around. It was hard to enjoy the view and the corals and such when it was so dark like this. Although it did make him want to see the real version even more so now.

Several times though, he needed to surface and breathe in deep again to continue looking for the coin. But then, on the fifth dive, one of the Calvin's saw something.

“I think I see it!” Calvin said
“Where?”
“Over there, look where I'm looking.”

The other three turned to see where Calvin was looking at. In the darkness, there was a tiny glint of light, barely reflecting off what little light was available in the dark sea.

“You think that's it?”
“Maybe. We'd have to get closer.”

Aishou waited and thought over how best to demonstrate her powers. It was true her powers were weak. So she made some tendrils of shadow and for lack of inspiration formed several loops in the air. After a moment the shadows covered her forearms and erupted into small spikes. “I have another power but it takes a moment to prepare.” Focusing shadows began to congeal on either side of her. After about a minute and a half of focus to small orbs hovered by her. These launched forward and at ten feet away arced about to fly back to Aishou. Once they had returned she set them to orbiting about her head. “I hope you found my powers satisfactory.” Aishou flashed a charming smile she was not flirting, but by her nature she liked to charm others even if she did not actively think about what she was doing.

Interesting. Aishou seemed a little more capable than when he first started. Then again, Falque’s powers were entirely different, for he lacked much of any real control over moving shadows like Aishou. His was more...personal, in a sense. An art of transforming his own body into the darkness. It was what made this power a natural element to him, and something Aishou would have to learn mechanically. And because of all that, Falque was responsible for teaching how to do it.

Aishou’s power was also slightly bolstered by the Red Sun. Maybe not to the same degree as Falque, but any wielder of darkness would feel it. Of her powers, her ability to form the darkness on her own body drew the most attention from Falque. If she could wrap her entire body in a single shadow, like a cloak, then maybe...

“Yes, I think they will do.” Falque smiled in kind. Charming was a very hard thing to do against Falque, or at least consciously. His apparent overexposure to women led him to smile almost automatically. The hood of his cloak blocked any such view from his pupil, however. “I’d like you to try and wrap the shadows from this tree around you, and try to pull yourself into its place. Start slowly, don’t worry about trying again either.”

In the mean time, Calvin was fast approaching his little totem. The journey to it would not be the interesting part, however. In fact, aside from the fact he was near one of the most beautiful places on Earth, the whole thing was rather uneventful. The real happening would begin after he acquired his little gem. There was no sudden lightning storm or earthquakes, no impromptu hurricanes foreshadowing some grimdark apocalyptic mess that happened all thanks to Calvin doing some arbitrary ritual incorrectly. No, the only notice of anything changing was the slight shift in the waves, and the reef moving about just slightly as something raised itself from the seabed.

Calvin and his new ‘friend’ were fairly distant from Falque and Aishou, leaving the Hydra to have to fend for himself for the time being. As the creature approached Calvin, he’d notice a grey metallic form, shaped as something of a serpent. Even underwater, the efficient grinding of metal and rock was easily heard as the serpent’s body twisted underneath the waves. It was unnaturally large, longer than even Calvin from one head to tail, and it had more girth than any one of Calvin’s necks.

Despite its odd metal and rock form, it moved underwater with deadly speed. A loud metal hiss commanded its prey’s attention, and finally its full form would rise out of the water, a face unlike any creature on Earth, of unnatural shape in the jaw. Its wings, however, were bat-like, and the brunt of its body was serpentine. Along it were something of rotating spikes, their sharpness to be tested when the beast launched itself at Calvin, attempting to coil around the main part of his body. It was fast, but it was also big, which made it still a fairly easy target to hit or at least predict its movement. Whether fighting it was the right thing to do or not would have to be up to Calvin, for now.

Well, that seemed to be rather uneventful. The hydra was able to get to the shiny point under the water, and sure enough, there was his lucky coin. And after checking for a moment to make sure there was no dark guardian or giant evil creature he would have to do battle with, Calvin's reached out and took a handful of sea mud where the coin was and grabbed it.

Nothing seemed to happen after he collected it, so he took a moment to shift his claws through the mud before he felt the coin in it. Once he had it secured in his claws, he let the rest of the mud go. And that was it. He went through the shadow sea and collected his lucky coin. Huzzah. That was rather easy. Seemed like it would have some more buildup then that, but sometimes it is just that easy.

“Hey, what's that thing?” Second Calvin mentally shot to the others.

So much for it being easy.

There was some big, winged, metallic...SOMETHING in the water. And that whatever it was just happened to be in the water with him. And it didn't seem to be friendly, considering the speed it was launching itself at him. It was very fast, and he noticed it was trying to coil around him.

“Time to go!”

It was fast, and while Calvin wasn't exactly speedy, the large moves of the thing made it kind of easy to tell what it was doing. And since he really didn't want to deal with something like that underwater, where he couldn't breathe, then the best thing for him to do was get out of the water. So, before the thing could fully wrap around him, Calvin flapped his own wings hard to attempt to jet himself out of the water.

Simply put, just because he couldn't breathe while underwater, he was at a disadvantage there. At least in the air over the water he wouldn't have to worry about that. But it would be better to try and get back to the beach then stay in the air, just because he knew he couldn't stay in the air forever.

First things first though. And the first thing was to get into the air.

It was hard not to be distracted by a gigantic hydra and some metallic gargoyle-naga monster-thing charging out of the water and making a disastrous commotion. While Aishou was busy with whatever, Falque snapped his head around to watch in slight panic the two beasts rising into the air, the Guardian at Calvin's tail. Damn, he was trying to get into the sky. It was a bad move, though at least the Hydra didn't try fighting the creature altogether. The problem was that the Red Sun blared in full force up above, and without shade, Calvin was doomed.

“Calvin!” Falque wasn't sure Calvin could even hear him, the grinding metal of the Guardian screeching right by his heads. It flew into the air all the same and started to coil at the rear of Calvin's body. Its body was broken up in plate links, like a chain, and each piece spun in the opposite direction of its neighbours. The spikes along those plates not acted like the teeth of a saw, trying to dig themselves through Calvin's tough scales. Though at first it seemed futile, Calvin would feel the pressure against his body dig just a hair deeper into him. It wouldn't be too long before it could break into his flesh.

“Calvin! Get under shade! Transform or whatever!” Falque yelled as loud as he could, running to some patch of forest a few hundred metres away from the temple. If Calvin got any closer to the out-of-place temple, he'd find the Guardian all the more vicious. Its spikes grew sturdier and sharper, the speed of its rotating links all the quicker, and its jagged mouth gripping against one of Calvin's heads. He may not make it if he tried to stay up in the air any longer, and did not escape the monster's grip.

Okay, well this thing was increasingly hostile, even going so far as to follow him into the air. And as it stood, he wasn't fast enough to prevent it from at least partially coiling around him, which made it all the more difficult for the large reptile. But what was really cause for alarm was the fact that, while it might have been light, it was starting to cut into him. If this thing was capable of piercing or cutting into him, it had to have some kind of strength behind it, so getting out of it was probably the smartest thing he could do.

Only downside was that in his current state, he was very much tangled up in the metal whatever it was. Which meant that escaping was hard, and it seemed to function just as well in the air as it did in the water.

“Any ideas?” He asked himself as he struggled to free himself.
“I got nothing.” A different Calvin replied.
“Next time, pick a different place?” His third side replied snidely.
“I'll file that for later...” Calvin said.

He heard Falque shouting at him. Yeah, that sounded better then any ideas that he was coming up with, and considering he knew this place better then he did, it sounded like sound advice. After all, he couldn't think of any reason why Falque would want to do him harm, except for maybe forget to tell him that there was something like that in the water.

“Better then anything we got.” Calvin said as the reptile started to shrink as he shifted to a hybrid form. Now that he was smaller, the coils the machine had him in no longer had him entangled, and Calvin escaped from its clutches.

Once free, Calvin began flying over towards where Falque was mentioning. At least until he got back to the beach. Once solid ground was under him, Calvin dropped out of the air and started hoofing it towards that extremely out-of-place forest in alternate Australia.

Aishou had little trouble pulling the shadows from the tree. It was also easy to wrap herself in said shadows. At first this caused her some small problems as she could no longer see. Aishou liked to be able to see what was going on around her. Still she knew better then to argue of complain about not being able to see. So she set about trying to sink into the shadows and at first nothing happened. Ok lets face it for quite some time nothing happened she could hear Falque yelling at Calvin but the words were not clear. That might have something to do with the fact her ears were full of shadows. Then slowly she began to have an idea.

With thought came deed and a light pinch on her arm. Then a series of light pinches down her spine ending with a harder pinch on her bottom. What came next felt like a long grope of both her bosom and yes she does know what that feels like. Then starting with her feet it felt like she was sinking into very thick mud or tar. About the time it got to her knees it also began at the elbows working both up and down her arms. It did not take long before it started on her belly and once begun there she felt neck deep in tar. Instinctively she drew a deep breath before her mouth and nose went under. After the breath it did not take long for the process to end and her to only be a shadow of herself.

Falque held his breath, waiting for Calvin to escape the monstrosity. It seemed the Guardian had the hydra in a death grip, though at the last minute the student managed to shift into a smaller form and leave the monstrosity confused. It did not last long however, for even as Calvin made his way towards the small patch of trees, the naga was hot on his trail. Ready to intervene, Falque moved out from under the shade and prepared to engage the beast, his tendrils forging from the darkness, and once the beast was ready to clamp down on Calvin hiding under the brush, Falque snagged the creature and redirected it just enough to let it pass Calvin, smashing one of the trees down in the process.

“Well, that worked enough. Did you get your totem?” Falque asked, though he already knew the answer. The Guardian only ever attacked once someone found their totem. While formidable and perhaps invincible, the monster was at least predictable. “The Guardian needs the light of the Red Sun to see, so as long as you hide in this shade, you are invisible to it. Now...Aishou?” Falque turned to where she used to be. To his mild surprise, he realized the woman had already melded into the darkness. With eyes like his, the ability to discern between her shadow and others was possible. A trait unique to himself and those he taught to do so. Now blended fully into the shadows, Aishou would find her senses returning. An important part should she want to use this power.

“Alright. Remember the powder you consumed? Its use is to draw a connection between this place, the realm of shadows, and your own physical body.” He looked to Calvin first, indicating that that part was mostly for his knowledge, “The other purpose is the reinforce and maintain a permanent connection, something you'll both require from the powder's mystic properties.”

“Your objective is to enter the temple. The only way you can do that is if you move there as a shadow, where the Guardian can't see you. Otherwise it will just kill you, since its strength grows with its desire to fulfil its purpose.” Falque now turned to Calvin again, leaving Aishou to cross the place on her own, “Take out your totem, whatever it was that you grabbed. Concentrate on examining it, and remembering exactly where you retrieved it from. That’s all you’ll need to do, and suddenly you’ll find yourself in an even stranger world.”

Calvin's own body would meld into the shade much the same way as Aishou, once he managed to focus long enough. As for Falque, he himself now faded away into the darkness, the only trace of him a contrasting shadow following along the inverted coloured sand, practically taunting the two to catch up with him as he dashed into the temple. In the meanwhile, the Guardian loomed overhead, waiting for its next meal.

“Runningrunningrunningrunningrunningrunningrunningrunning...” Calvin chanted to himself as he raced to cover, only succeeding in reaching the destination after Falque got the creature entangled in some form of darkness. And even then, part of the tree cover was destroyed in the process. What the hell was up with this reality anyway?

Calvin could only nod when Falque asked if he got his totem. He was in better shape then that, but running for one's life tends to cause heavy breathing no matter who you are. It gets the blood pumping because said blood has a desire to stay within the body where it belongs, and giant flying metal snake/gargoyle/whatever things tend to remove blood from the body. But apparently as long as he stayed in the shade, it wouldn't be able to see him. Oh lovely, so now they were stranded.

Well, not entirely. This was part of the training it seemed like. Okay, next step. That powder. It was a connection tool of sorts. They'd have to go into the shadow with it in order to reach the temple and not die horribly. And since this was new to him, the first step was to take out his totem/lucky coin. Now he needed to concentrate on it and where he grabbed it from.

“Okay, focus...focus...” Calvin thought.
“Focus harder,” Another Calvin thought to him.
“Not helping with the focusing.”
“Dude, shut it.”
“I'm only trying to help, jeez.”
“Really not helping guys.”
“Sorry.”

Okay, lets try that again.

It took a while, but Calvin did manage to notice something slip around it. If the last place was strange, then this one was probably about three steps up on the strangeness scale, simply because it seemed like this dimension was, well, missing a dimension.

Calvin looked around for a minute. “Man.” He said, “I don't know how Paper Mario does it.”

Well, now it needed to be tested out. So with Calvin in the shadows, he headed for the temple. Hopefully there wouldn't be any more traps or issues.

Aishou felt her senses return and watched Falque reflect the guardian. Everything looked flatter like things had lost a demonsion. Still she had to focus the task was simple get to the temple and stay in the shadows. She slid forward and watched Falque race forward. Well as powerful as he was she was willing to bet the guardian held little threat for him. Her on the other hand would not fare so well. Slowly she slid about the shadows. Provided nothing unseemly occurred she would have little trouble making it to the temple in the shadows.

The Guardian shifted through the air, hovering just near the two shadows as they moved towards the temple. The heavy red sun beat down against its back, and Falque himself, whose form emerged whole and very corporeal at the temple, watched it closely on the partially collapsed roof of the shrine. The Guardian did not dare reach for him, but unlike Aishou’s assumption, it was not out of respect of power. It was something far deeper than that. Something that allowed Falque, and only Falque, to treat it the way he did.

In any case, Calvin and Aishou both managed to make re-entry into the temple. Almost immediately, the world outside the temple would melt away. Should they turn their sights around, once they were out of their shadow form, they would find the temple had returned to the swamp. The Red Sun was replaced with a young moon, and the beach itself was replaced with the old swamp. The Guardian itself vanished from the sky, lying in wait for another journey of fools.

Exciting the shadow form had the same mechanics as entering it in the first place. For Aishou, she would simply need to try and ‘unwrap’ herself from the form. As for Calvin, it was just another matter of sheer will. The two of them made it back alive, and able to dwell in the shadows. With that, Falque was simply pleased.

“Not bad. I guess.” Falque smirked underneath his hood, hiding his mild amusement under more stern words. “That’s all, really. The rest is practice, now that you have the know-how and capacity to do it. That part’s up to you.” Falque leaned back against the wall on the balcony area, looking down at the two of them. Another shadow user. Lovely. Hopefully she didn’t suffer the same origin of power that he did, or else her own future was a bleak one.

Aishou entered the temple with the thrill of success in her heart. She watched literally from the shadows as the world around her returned to normal. The swamp was a slightly welcome sight as there was no guardian lurking about wanting to maul her. Much like when she entered the shadows she had to focus. This was more pushing herself free of the shadow. If you have ever pulled yourself from a thick mud or clay it would feel similar. The process did not take to long it just felt very unusual. She was sure with practice that she would become used to it.

Once fully free she looked about stretching in a way that both loosened the muscles of her back and showed off her bosom. “Don't worry Falque I will make sure to get plenty of practice to master this wonderful gift you have shared.” Aishou gave him a wink maybe she had plans to encounter him again, or more likely she just felt a kinship to him as a fellow shadow user.

Okay, well even though he was short a dimension, Calvin was able to pretty much follow how reality worked here and make his way towards the temple again. Of course, that left the problem again of figuring out exactly how to do that. But, his first thought would be that it would be similar to how he came in. After all, no sense in having an ability that lets you go through a door but in order to get out you have to go through the chimney or something.

So, long story short, and another two minute conversation between himself, Calvin was out of the darkness and into...the regular darkness again that wasn't shadow darkness. “Huh,” He said, looking himself over, “That was fun.”

“Kinda like flipside, flopside.” Third Calvin said, “Flipside. Flopside. Flipside. Flopside.”
“Someone mentally slap him please.”
*TWHACK!*
“Ahhh...B*tch. The **** was that for?”
“Thank you. Who was that?”
“Five.”
“Good job new guy.”
“Thank you.”

Well, now all they had to do was wait until they got their next instructions. Buttttt....that didn't come. Apparently they were done now. All that was left for them to do was to practice it. Well, that was gonna be a fun few days to get used to.

“Well, alright.” Calvin said, “Thanks Falque. Guess I owe you one now.”
“Flipside. Flopside. Flipside. Flopside.”
“Five?”
“On it.”
*TWAACK!*
“****** **** you *******!”
“Never mine, fourth got him.”
