The enormous arachnid scrambled off from over Vahn as soon as he heard his voice. Matt chuckled at the sight, a bit surprised. "Yes. Most of the trees in the Arani- er, where he's from, are large and thick enough to support him and his kin. He still hasn't gotten out of the habit of trying to climb thinner ones, unfortunately." Kwarni seemed to be preoccupied by something on the tree trunk, as he was scraping at it while turned away. Matt didn't even have to ask. "Try not to eat the squirrels in crowds, if it comes to that, old friend." The reply was muffled. "Shmffkay!" If Vahn bothered to see what he was doing, he'd find a fresh squirrel corpse being shifted around on the spider's fangs. Matt turned back to Vahn. "It's good to know there're a few people in the world who won't freak out at the sight of an Aranian." Edited by Phantom, Dec 18 2010, 04:11 PM.

"Ah. That and these trees aren't usually here," Vahn included at the end of Matt's explanation. "At least the Christmas Pine aren't," Vahn smiled, dusting himself off as he watched the conversation, stepping out from under the tree as he looked over to Kwarni was doing. Eating a squirrel. The Eloc chuckled nerviously at Matt's nice comment. "Well, truthfully, I almost did at the beginning," he admitted. "But, then I figured he looked a little stuck, heard him talk, and realized he's not all that bad, outside his appearance," Vahn told Matt as he smiled. "The name's Vahn, by the way," the Eloc introduced himself, holding out a hand to Matt, then to Kwarni. |

"Cool snowman!" Dom literally jumped in surprise. All the while building his snowman, he had zoned out. in fact he kind of forgot he was in public and around people. Funny how his mind worked. Never the less when his heart finally calmed down and stopped desiring to escape his chest, Dom turned to see just who it was that was talking to him. Oh hey, it was Evy! "What flavor popsicle d'you have?" Dom stuck out his tongue. He saw Evy sneeze and shiver. Was a popsicle REALLY good for her right now? Probably not. The only reason Dom did it was because he was immune to the cold. That and he just liked having objects in his mouth. *cough* "I don't knoooooow. You're not gonna get sick are ya", Dom said with a cheeky smile. Sonata saw Malakai's body hunch over slightly. Just seeing his body react to the cold remind Sonata just...how cold it was. Than again he lived in Japan for most of his life so he was used to it's winter's. He often found it was the wind that made things cold more so than the temperature itself. "If you're cold we could move under a tree or something to keep us from getting hit with the wind." |

Evy sneezed. “No way!” She said, enthusiastically, jumping up and down. “I never ever get sick!” She sneezed again. “My mom used to say,” she bent over to roll a big snowball to make her own snowman, shivering, “that I had too much energy to get sick!” She ran around with it, rolling it along the ground, until she’d made an enormous, somewhat circular, somewhat squarish, and surprisingly triangular blob of snow. “So when the germs come I just bounce them off!” She beamed at Dom. Evy then sneezed again, tripped, and plummeted head first into her pile of snow. She pulled herself out, snow covering her hair, and giggled again. “Oops,” she wiped her now slightly wet nose on her elbow and sniffled, sitting on the ground and grinning up at him. “So… can I have a popsicle?” Evy asked hopefully. ----- Megan spun away, looking at Miguel, then dropped to her knees and began to sob. Miguel’s eyes widened and he stared at her, in near shock. Apparently he’d been right about this being a bad day for her. After mentally checking to be sure he wasn’t somehow the cause of her tears – he couldn’t think of anything he’d done, at least not to her – Miguel slowly knelt in the snow, feeling it soak through the knees of his pants. “Megan, what’s wrong?” Miguel slowly reached out, rubbing her back with one hand. “Come on, let’s get you up,” he glanced around, and spotted a tree with no one beneath it. “We’ll go over to that tree, okay? And you… you can talk to me, tell me what’s going on?” He was still rubbing her back, gently. “Okay?” If she seemed at all responsive or willing, Miguel would help her to her feet and guide her over to the tree as best as he could. It seemed both awkward and inappropriate to carry her at this point, although it remained an option. |

Malakai blinked up at Sonata, shaking head head. "I'm fine. Natural reaction when getting cold." Really, he was fine. France was a lot colder in the winter, he was pretty sure. Unless someone started a freak snowstorm down here, which the male was pretty sure would make it entirely more and more possible. Sometimes Evos and Magi could be really mean...or, then again, accidents happen. He didn't mean to set his sister's skirt on fire. Really. |

Kwarni didn't answer verbally, as his mouthparts were currently engulfed in squirrel, but he extended a clawed pedipalp to meet him. He didn't make a grabbing motion, as the last time he tried shaking someone's hand with this form was... well, a bit problematic. Matthew was more conventional, obviously. He smiled socially. "Good to meet you, Vahn. I'm Matt Daniels. My friend here is Yarrzhti Dellivi, though he mostly goes by 'Kwarni', amng humans... er, humanoids, perhaps?" He scrunched up his face in search of the right word, but quickly gave up. "Kwarni was selected by his people- his mother is the chief magic-user of the Aranians- to act as a sort of ambassador to the rest of the world. I'm accompanying him closely long enough to make sure he gets situated to society, to make sure both he and his peers are safe..." He trailed off. He didn't mean to bring up that there actually was a very minor worry that Kwarni would begin trying to feed on his peers. |

Kwarni's response to Vahn's handshake wasn't actually saying anything, but was more of a limb of his extending over the sounds of a squirrel being eaten. Vahn shook the appendage that was offered to him before turning to Matthew. Vahn shrugged when he tried to come up with a word that he was looking for. Apparently, this spider was the son of the lead magi of his race? "Ah," Vahn said, in understanding. "It's true, it does take some getting used to humans and the sort if you haven't been around them your whole life," Vahn spoke. "And when everyone's first instinct is to find the closest newspaper to swat you with, I guess," Vahn said to Matt. Changing the topic- "So, what kind of place does he come from?" Vahn asked as he looked at Kwarni with his orange orbs, observing the massive spider. | |

Dom could only chuckle at her enthusiasm. Of course whether she could bounce the germs away or not, that still didn't keep the girl from sneezing and shivering. Shrugging his shoulders a bit, Dom slipped off his leather jacket sleeve by sleeve. Pulling a popsicle from his pocket, Dom first handed the jacket to Evy. "Yes...BUT ONLY if you wear this jacket!" Sure Dom would be out a jacket for the day, but that didn't phase him. He was virtually immune to the cold. Though if anything happened to his leather jacket...he would probably cry...a lot. No I'm serious, he loved it as much as he loved his ma, pa, and mazda RX-8 Sherley. Malakai was pretty adamant about not being cold. Sonata didn't really push the topic, since it was really up to him. Plus he was a fire mage which probably could help in some regard. Hunching his shoulders slightly, Sonata let out a breath; clearly visible for all to see. "Well if you say so.." |

Megan could feel her anxiety multiplying as she just sat there in the snow, crying. It wasn't as if she could just stop. If she could have somehow managed such a feat she would have stopped long before now. It was just a simple impossibility at this moment in time; even if crying in the middle of a giant school function was one of the more embarrassing things she had ever done. This was even including ruining the first Coven meeting because of Nodi; which had been terrible on multiple levels, but nowhere near this bad. She hadn't cried, she'd just been terrified and that she could handle for all intents and purposes. Having Shadow and Silver here was still just as terrifying and disorienting than ever, but at least she had managed to stifle the feelings to just run away. It was still there, lingering and maybe because she had wanted to stay so badly was exactly why this had escalated so far out of control. She wasn't so scared anymore, that feeling had left when they had, but the sudden feeling of having lost control and having her day completely ruined was just to much to bear -- especially in front of Miguel. As much as they had been through it wasn't enough to warrant this kind of reaction from her. He probably knew that she wasn't the toughest or strongest girl around, but she didn't want him thinking she was some fragile little porcelain doll that may break if handled improperly (though that may have easily been the case). All she could manage to do was follow obediently as he tried to lead her to somewhere a little more secluded from the wandering eyes and judgmental stares-- not that their had been any as of yet, but it was perhaps jut best for her to hide her shame a little more until she could figure out how to cope with the loss of her holiday joy. She staggered through the snow as Miguel led her away from everything. It was hard to see through the tears so she relied all on him as they crunched their way through the snow. “I'm so sorry,” she stifled out as best she could through the tears. She was trying her hardest to try and stop crying, but it wasn't working out all so well. She tried her best to hide her face from him so he wouldn't see her like this, but even then she found it difficult to truly obscure her face. “I-- I just-- This is stupid-- so stupid-- I'm just-- really scared of dogs. Silver was here-- and shadow-- and I just-- lost it.” |

Evy giggled at Dom. “Okay, if you say so!” Evy jumped to her feet and took the jacket, pulling it on. She stopped shivering almost immediately as the dry (for now) jacket covered her wet clothing, hugging it to her body. Dom’s jacket was obviously too big for her, but she admired the leather with wide eyes and probing fingers. “Wow…” she whispered. “This is so cool!” She jumped up and down, enthusiastically. “Where can I get one?” She grinned up at Dom. “So cool!” She twirled around and came to a stop, nearly falling over again, and taking the popsicle. “Thanks so much!” She beamed at Dom and stuck the cold treat into her mouth, sucking on it happily. ----- “It’s okay,” Miguel said, comfortingly, rubbing Megan’s back. Finally they made it to the tree. He hesitated somewhat, then wrapped his arms around her, continuing to rub her back. She could at least cry onto his shoulder, he figured, although this was undeniably awkward. At least with his arms around her, it sort of muffled the sound of her sobs, hopefully drawing less attention to them. So Megan was scared of dogs? Miguel couldn’t blame her – there did seem to be a lot of dogs and wolves on this campus, many with large, sharp teeth. He wondered if she’d always been scared of dogs, or if something had happened? He’d picked up two phobias since coming to the Twin Campuses… both from the same experience, but two distinct fears nonetheless. “It’s okay,” he said, softly. “It’s – I understand. It’s really embarrassing, but… I’m actually really scared of the dark. When we were doing that training, and you sent me to that cave on the mountain, I… actually, I had a panic attack.” Was that horribly embarrassing? Yes. Miguel didn’t think Megan would tell anyone, though, and he figured a confession like that might hopefully give her something to think about other than her fear. |

"Ah, well, the location is need-to-know, for safety reasons, but..." he had to remind himself before he let it slip out, "The Aranian Forest, in Africa, has an impressive biosphere, plenty of food, and it's comfortbale enough..." He looked at Kwarni. "If you're an Aranian. If you're not... most people just can't get used to a food chain that circles back on itself, especially if they can't be at the top of it." "Well," Vahn stated, "That's understandable. Got to keep the giant spiders safe, right?" he asked, chuckling a little bit before Matt continued. "True, though, about the food chain. People sometimes refuse to believe that they aren't the top of it and actually have to fight to stay alive. In some sort of comfort zone or something," Vahn spoke to him before looking over to Kwarni with the squirrel and wondered how he was going to swallow it. The Eloc had never seen a spider eat before. "So, just because now I'm curious," Vahn asked. "How big can Aranians get?" Simple enough of a question, Vahn figured. |

"Of course. One of my colleagues is in the Aranian forest right now, and he's got bars on the windows, and set up a chain-mail-screen door for his trailer, which he refuses to leave." He laughed lightly. "So, just because now I'm curious," Vahn asked. "How big can Aranians get?" "Oh, well I've never actually seen the upper limit. We've never been able to study them thoroughly enough to find out what allows them to survive at their size, though we have some hypotheses floating around. As near as I can tell, they grow throughout their lives. The largest I saw was an old tunnel-dweller near the edge of the forest- Gurtoov, I think- who must have had a forty foot legspan. He was just past twenty years old- the maximum age for most Aranians. I think magic can affect it too, though, because his mother has been around a lot longer with her magic, but is only about half that size. The Aranians are pretty varied, anyway, though, so there's just not much way to tell." Kwarni now had a chunky, gory mess of something that was vaguely recognizable as having once been some small mammal. It was also getting smaller. Part of the reason he liked squirells was that they could be eaten more quickly because of their size, the meat just sort of falling apart into slop as it was chewed by the fangs and deteriorated by his enzymes. Most meals had to be eaten over the course of several days, at least, stored in a web. It was more than a little creepy that he seemed to be totally pacified by the squirell, moving nothing except his mouthparts, and not obviously reacting to anything that was said. |

She felt cold, most likely as well she should. It was cold out and her body was slowly being chilled to the bone by the residual snow that melted its way through to her legs. Even when he embraced her, she could barely begin to find the warmth in it-- nor could she over analyze the kind gesture as something more, as something she would normally do. The warmth soon came to her though, but she neglected to think of the implications involved there within. Was it so bad just to want something like this? For someone just to care for her a little enough to actually be there when she needed it? She knew she was weak, their previous encounter had proven that to Miguel. He didn't need a refresher course on the subject. She just melted into his arms as she tried to let it all out. The tears, the worries, everything. She didn't want to be the weak little girl that everyone knew she was, but it was tough. How was she supposed to be that person when for years she had been nothing but coddled for being worthless instead of forcing her to grow by her own means? She just couldn't adapt t this place as well as all the others. Maybe she was just far too normal for her own good. Maybe that was the problem and she just needed to be someone else for just awhile; not that all the acting classes in the world could help her right now. “Thank you, Miguel,” Megan stated, finally regaining some of her normal composure through the tears and mental-flagellation. She sniffled a tad before trying to dig herself out of his shoulder and trying to give him her best smile, but it was few and far between to find such a thing amid the red eyes and runny nose. How terrible she probably looked didn't occur to her until moments after she had done so however. It was a terrifying though, that she quickly tried to rectify, but perhaps it seemed more like she was trying to run from him as fast as she broke away. This was not the case however as she pulled out her bag and began looking for a tissue. “Again, I really appreciate it, Miguel,” Megan reiterated as she tried clean herself up. “I mean, it's not that I'm embarrassed about it or anything; I am a little, but that's not what the problem was today. It was just-- I had such high hopes for today; it being Christmas and all. I just wanted to come out and have fun and then they just had to be here to spoil-- everything. I know it's not their fault and I can't really blame them, I don't WANT to blame them, but part of me can't help hold just the mildest disdain for them. I suppose that makes me a terrible person for blaming them for things they can't really control.” “I'm sorry about the cave, Miguel. I didn't know-- about all of it; about him, and about the caves. If I could do it all over again I wouldn't have sent you out there. At least it didn't end nearly as badly as it could have. They could have really hurt you. That guy is just-- a little bit crazy. I still can't believe he threatened to kill you. What kind of person does that? What kind of justification could it take for a person to actually take the life of another?” |
