However, this lab was different - the lights were on. Why would they be on this room but not any other one?

That question in-particular bugged Catherine more than any other one as she walked in behind Lore, somewhat distraught over having not taken right for the 'Control' room - but simultaneously glad she did not. She couldn't see what they did, but her vision caught glimpses of electrical life all about. And she could see beyond the ceiling above... a little bit. However, everything was fuzzy at best, and since there wasn't any energy flowing through there like there should normally be, there were no points of reference to go by, so she didn't dare force an estimate of exactly what was beyond said panel.

Cath could try heightening her senses, but she wanted as much of her energy as she could get, so that was probably a bad idea. Besides that, the girl already seemed to know that there was a way out, and how to get to it. So instead, the young lady explored her immediate surroundings... and upon finding nothing of immediate interest, soon lost interest; at least, until she saw something that did.

It glowed slightly in her vision, and although she couldn't tell if it was powered or not, she separated herself from Lore briefly to investigate. Tentatively, Cath walked over to the object in question, refraining from touching but still observing. After a long few moments of nothing more happening, she decided to go against every instinct and placed her hand upon the object in question, swearing at herself under her breath OhpleaseGodOhpleaseGodOhpleaseGod~ No dragons... pleeeeaaaaase no dragons... And then...

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Thank... you... Lord... Jesus... God... and the United States of America! No long-dead dragon spirits or ancient temple passages opening up or any of that nonsense. Just plain old nothing. Sighing with immense relief, Cath turned back, stating to the others "Hey... there's something over here, but I dunno how it works. Someone else wanna give it a shot?" At least it wouldn't be her getting possessed this time; that much was relief enough...

((I was without internet for a few days...x-x))

Even the most well meaning of innocents can be confused. Especially when dehydrated and significantly more than half dead. an acrid aftertaste of vomit still swam in her mouth and burned through her throat. As much as the water around looked appealing the fact that people were walking in it, as cold as it was making it even more tempting... they were still wading through it, her slippers and ankles damp and dripping. And her pajamas were darkening steadily.

At least the crisp scent of water seemed to erase the lingering aroma of death and decomposing fluids. Better than letting it stew in their brains. More importantly, they were heading into an area that was more her friend than any of the others had been. No creepy skeletons, no DEAD people. A simple room with secrets that lay hidden from the world it seemed.

Then Cath stepped over to one and nervously put her hand on it, expecting a reaction. When non came, she offered it to the rest of them. Lore seemed intent on trying an exit, but Tara was as usual more focused on learning what she could from an intellectual room like this. Her pale fingers reached out and settled on the cool tablet, before half of a scream erupted. More of a gasp really.

It was like opening a file with a virus almost. A virus designed to download as much information to your brain as was physically possible but not to leave it with you in a mess. The last thing she was aware of was an empty heart beat and her brain flittered out for a few seconds. She couldn't even be aware of for how long. That was unnerving After her normally efficient brain was all but scattered, it began to organize itself once more, and much of the information recieved was filed away where it belonged, but three particular notes stayed at the forefront of her mind. She reviewed them once more even as the air returned to her lungs.

"We seem to be out of our temporal depth..." she mused quietly. The time stamps on these were intriguing. Clearing her throat, she did her best to draw the rest of the groups attention to her. "I have reason to believe that the creature out there was a Mercurite. While I'm not entirely clear on their origin, this..."

She tapped the device gingerly. " has made a few things clear. They have a hive mind. Separation makes them more aggressive and reckless, and less cognizant than when they are with others... There also appears to be a Queen, more powerful than the others. however, she seemed to have negative effects when landing was attempted...Hmmm....An off calculation or Kelvins might be key. There are supposedly some thing called Psych Dimes, used to defend agaisnt hte Queen... " So many unanswered questions, she began digging back into her new stores, falling silent and letting words seep in all around.

“No…not out…” not outside

Her voice was nearly a whisper, a faint high-pitched moan. Though she tried to communicate through her throat now that it was a little moist, she simply lacked the energy. She finished her thoughts through her telepathy.

“Must…” go … they’re coming

Her emotions of insistence were growing.

“I … know… “ can hear … thoughts… theirs…it hurts...

Tara’s desire for more information would be granted, though as she tried harder to grasp certain information, the remainder moved on from distant memory into the sealed depths of the unconscious. From now on, it would take more than simple willpower and desire to retrace her new memories:

Physical Report: June 10, 2482 C.E.

Behavioral Report: March 23rd, 2482 C.E.

*BANG*. A humongous noise thundered from close outside the room. *BANG*. Again, the sound distinctively on the left side of the room (when facing from the door). It came from around the corner of the hallway, in the corridor passing by the Control room. *BANG*. It was now right up next to where the pool of water stopped.

Two metallic tentacles, each the thickness of the average arm, immediately snaked their way into the room, keeping away from the pool of water. It was only a second before they were five feet into the door, where they waited as if taunting. The redhead turned her face to see them, and grimaced in horror, frantically moving her eyes about to look for the others in desperation.

Lore watched intently as Cath saw something that was actually working and Tara attempted it, the look on her face showing that obviously something was happening. When she snapped back, she had an interesting tale to tell. The things were creatures and by the sound of it, the crew was dead. Possibly? He wasn't sure, but it seemed like the metal things were not the original pilots and that the ship had somehow crashed. Whatever the case, it seemed like Tara now had an extensive knowledge of the creature, that, while scattered, would help them.

Now back to the choice at hand. Check out the control room? Or use the escape route? Though oddly enough, the girl said it didn't lead outside, which worried Lore. Where was she trying to take them? Not that he had time to worry about that as he jumped, loud crashes from outside meaning probably one of two things. Either the scary monster they knew or a new one. He hoped for the one they knew, to be perfectly honest, because in terms of ability, he could actually... maybe fight them.

Though, he had to be very careful. One emergency use out of five, plus the medium sized field... added on the few smaller pillars he had created earlier, he just had to be careful. Overextending himself probably would not be the best of ideas. However, the large pool was not wasted so far, as he was still connected to the entire field by the small trail of ice he had formed behind him with his wet shoes, which meant...

Two small, thin pillars of ice rose from the water in the floor, edging close to the tentacles. If they didn't like cold, they were going to be a bit more distracted by the ice pillars then by whatever it was they were after. He wasn't confident though. Not in the least. He could see this backfiring badly. But right now, as they weren't being threatening, he didn't want to do a full on assault. Were they sentient? Curious? He wasn't sure, he just wanted to keep them back, not kill them.

He looked up at the open hatch and then to everyone else. The ice staircase he had created before wouldn't make it easy to get up to them, as not everyone had ATRFs, however it would be easier than jumping.

"Okay, so... do we go up or run around them? Main problem I see with up is that it'd be hard for us to move in there and it seems tentacle sized, so we could easily get trapped in there. Are you sure going in there is the best idea? Where does it lead?" Lore asked, a bit urgently. He was beginning to get a wee bit scared of these tentacles, to be completely honest. He had to be sure though. If the girl knew what she was doing, he'd trust her, but if there was a choice? He'd rather be in a more open area where they couldn't be trapped.

But at this point, he was a bit too preoccupied to think about that. He'd leave it up to them.

CHOCOLATE. THE LORD OF ALL FOODS.
While Morton’s eyes were focused on the odd light panel, Cath and Tara had focused their attention on the weird circular thing, or whatever it was. Cath had touched it first, and when nothing happened, she suggested that another touch it. Perhaps it was a bad idea, because when Tara touched it, she seemed to have some sort of electric shock seizure or something, and the next thing Morton knew she was talking about Mercurites and Temporal Depth. What the hell was any of that? Hive minds, queens, quite frankly, it reminded Morton of that Resident Evil movie with the Red Queen.

Great, he was stuck in a B-Movie.

The girl’s voice was faint, even to Morton. He closed his eyes and tried to focus on her words, but she could barely speak it was impossible to understand. All he heard was “must” and “I know,” He put his finger up to his lips to shush her, wanting her to save her strength. Then, as a massive bang exploded through the room, the boy understood again why she was so scared. Why all of them were so scared. Those things. Mercurites. Whatever the hell they were. Silver Surfer knock-off monsters.

Morton didn’t like them, that was all that mattered.

Luckily, Lore still had his water, and he could think on his feet. He kept the tentacles at bay and created an icy staircase up to the light panel. It was a good thing Morton had ATRF’s at that point.

“I say we run. If they have us cornered, we’re cornered. If we get out of here, we can get help. We’re just…five people scared out of our minds. We need to tell people about this place, but we can’t do that if those things get us.”

She felt information sliding away from her mental grasp and it brought a pout to her face. She disliked losing anything, ESPECIALLY information. And even mroe so, for one with a perfect memory, to have something like this out of her reach was not something she was altogether too familiar with. She did not like the feeling of empty thoughts returning to her. But at least all did not return that way. What she did hear made her pale a little. Lesser psychic beings.

While her ego pricked at the idea of being inferior, it was true...her psychic potential was there, but not excercised, and it qualified as lesser. She did not like the implications of being dominated. Therefore, when the Mercurites began their next attack, Tara started making a slow, steady, and sloshy retreat toward the stairs.

"Up. I'd say we follow it aroudn and try to drop into the control room...its where they seem to be coming from... Source of the problem... we need to get there, and we need..." This material, the slab she'd touched. It channeled psychic energy of some level...if it was smaller, it could be considered what could be called a psych dime...had they seen something, anything like that?

Mental gears whirred in review, looking for a key words. There... one piece in passing. She hadn't paid much attention the gun Morton had grabbed. But the Tesla coil had nabbed her eye for a moment, and now she could see the grey diameter behind it....But what had happened to the-

He'd dropped it in the corpse riddled room. Even as she backed up, Tara's palm met her forehead with more pressure and force than she should have been exerting. Even as the stinging faded in her palm, she groaned, partially in pain, and partially in frustration.

"Zut!... The gun.... You dropped the GUN." It was only a guess, no confirmation that the piece was important, but it was a lead that she could have, and should have checked. She should have dismantled that thing as soon as it was picked up. Unfortunately, there had been more pressing matters on the brain. "It might have had a key to our survival in it... Augh...." She was already starting to scramble up the stairs, wondering if she might be so lucky as to find a map of the ship and the duct they were in in her stores, btu give nits stubbornness, she wasn't counting on it.

Then she stopped, nudging the other girl for a moment. "....Perhaps you better go first..." Leading was always a horrible idea, after all. At least, when you were this frail. But rest assured, Tara would be right behind Cath, breathing heavy still, green eyes meticulously and critically thinking of who knows what.

*in my defense, I did have (a few times in fact X_x) a decent post lined up, but it(they) kept getting nerfed for various reasons... this is the best I can get up under threat of being HAPPYNOTE™-ed >.>*

The moment the others noted the tentacles coming into their current area, Catherine's shield hummed to life around her, though now giving off a freezing-cold aura - a small bit of the power she'd copied from Lore. She spun on her heels and sent it forward, hardening the bubble so that a small portion of the water along the ground in front of her clung to the rolling "snowball" as it moved gently in-between the thin pillars Lore had created, making a weak bubble of ice blocking the immediate middle ground; hopefully that would be enough to deter the pests from coming any closer. Lowering the shield, the paper-thin ice structure held, though how long it would be before the tentacles figured out that it wasn't much stopping them from moving forward, or the item collapsed under it's own weight due to rising temperatures, was anyone's guess.

"'Tentacle-sized', huh? No sh- No crap!" Her humor was strained, a bit more than slightly irritated by what was going on - namely aimed at the the inactive indecision happening before her. They were all going to get killed if they thought any longer upon everything. "If we're going up, then let's go up. I've got a feeling we aren't getting away from these things whether we run or don't."

And then the other girl started up again... and Catherine had taken just about as much as she could take. The girl had done almost nothing except whine and cry the entire time she'd been here... oh, and attract the monster. Taking backward steps toward the ice stairs nearby, she tried not to panic, though annoyance was still clearly defined in her voice as she declared "Well we aren't going back for it, obviously! So let's make due with what we have, 'ight?! I'm not keen on being in front unless there's absolutely no one else who wants to be...

"I'll take center. I can keep most everyone covered from the center, and it doesn't take long to raise the shield... but I can't reach both front and back from either end. It just doesn't reach that far. And I ain't exactly keen on snap offense... Aside from that, how are we going to get our new friend in there? She's barely well enough to walk... of all the times not to have a power bar or something..."

((OOC: Such a sad tale. Happy Note for Catherine anyways.))

The tendrils promptly avoided the pillars, but did little else in the name of aggression. They did the same with Catherine’s frozen barrier, keeping themselves near the ceiling of the room and close to the doorway. Strangely, they were avoiding these traps without even feeling them, and as Tara understands, this should not be conventionally possible.

I’ll manage … please go … hatch

Her psychic voice rivaled that of a scream. The redhead’s eyes continued to dart between each person and the monstrous appendages.

Speaking of which, the tendrils now retracted back outside. Perhaps they were bored with the spectacle, or maybe they wished for the persons to venture back outside. Or maybe it was to make way for the over two dozen tongue-thick tendrils snaking their way along the wall into the room. Avoiding the middle where the pillars and snowball were, the thirty writhing snakes made their way along the entirety of the walls, surrounding the five of them in a matter of seconds.

They weren’t stationary either: the tendrils constantly writhed along the wall, blurring into themselves like a pit of serpents. Occasionally, a single tendril would quickly break from the wall to make a grab at the students, like an overly flexible shepherd’s crook. One such had snapped at Lore’s ankles, threatening to cut him off from his water trail. Somehow, the Mercurites were getting very smart, very fast.

The opening in the ceiling was mostly left alone by the tentacles, however. Was there something in there they wanted to avoid, or was it just another trap they want you to spring? Did it even matter? To reiterate for those wishing to escape, the dark tunnel above the ceiling follows two different directions, both passages curving out of view of Catherine’s sight. Either way will likely bring the party to a brand new area, or maybe a brand new trap. Whatever the choice, staying in one spot had become much less of an option.

((Moar OOC: Obviously, my intentions are to get you guys moving, but that's not always the cleanest thing to do. PM me for any questions you have on what's going on and what you can do; it'll probably be more helpful than this post.))

*Cathy's happy-note has been noted... and since no one else has posted yet... that leaves me to post - even though I really can't do much of anything other than yell and throw stuff around - before I lose interest again and forget where I was going and what I was going to do {coughJerkscough}*

Enough talking. It was time to move, for real this time. Cath saw the one tentacle making a grab at Lore, and snapped a quick, small energy blast at it as she yelled the obvious "Someone just get up the stairs, now!", her voice almost as loud as the girl's mental screaming, only this was going in their ears rather than their heads. Semantics aside, she quickly formed another loose shield at about the mid-point of the stairs, securing their exit in case the tentacles decided to snap at someone half-way up. For the most part, with the exception of the very top and very bottom steps, the area would be mostly safe for someone to walk up.

She herself stayed behind to maintain the shield for as long as she could bear to... which would be only a minute or so at the most, having strained herself by using the shield earlier. Concentration between the shield and her own personal safety was getting strained thin right now. As soon as most of the others were through, she'd make a break for it; although it would have been preferable for her to be right in the middle, there just wasn't enough room for two people on the stairs.Aside from that, she was in personal danger.

If she had the energy and will to kick someone up there herself, she would have. But it was up to Morty, Tara, and Lore to get two of their three collective asses up there before Cath would get in line.

((My bad. Sorry, didn't notice this.))

"Okay. Fine then."

Lore sighed. He hadn't wanted to do this. He REALLY hadn't wanted to do this. But there was no other choice it seemed. With his eyes closed, he focused on the trail of ice that was leading towards the pool of water. When a few tentacles came towards his ankles, that was the last straw. With one final sigh, he focused, sending a burst of magical energy through the icy trail and in to the water. From the water, a large pillar of ice slammed up from the ground in to the middle of the door where the tentacles were coming from....

"Didn't want to do this, but sorry."

And then from either side of that pillar, two walls of ice slammed in to either side of the door. That would completely seal them inside of the room, but also completely cut off the tentacles from where they were. They weren't going to be leaving that room any time soon, but those tentacles were going to have a field day getting in or escaping for the ones that had already been trapped, especially with the multiple layer that he was summoning up, one after another, to reinforce the door.

"Go now!" he said to the others, pointing towards the hatch. They would follow, he and Catherine, afterward. They had the weapons for god's sake, they were the defenders.

CHOCOLATE. THE LORD OF ALL FOODS.
So the plan was to run up into the vents. Very conveniently placed vents, mind you. Morton was still holding onto one last shred of hope that maybe this all just a really bad dream because of some bad food. Probably some freezer-burned steak, or something. Or that grilled cheese Calvin had made him. He knew that guy was a terrible cook, or…maybe Morton just had a weak stomach. The reality of the situation was that this really wasn’t a dream, and tentacles were coming to kill him and probably…well, Morton still wasn’t sure exactly what the tentacles wanted to do. They had left the girl alive on the ground (Speaking of which, have you ever tried to go up a steep staircase or ladder with a nearly-dead girl on your shoulder? This was Morton’s first time) but left the other three males dead. Maybe they had starved to death.

Not to be insensitive, but it didn’t matter. When Lore started slamming ice walls around, Morton’s train of thought had been broken. It was time to get the hell out of there.

Morton quickly scurried up the ladder, holding onto the nameless redhead with the utmost care, and when he finally poked his head up, he squinted his eyes. It was…dim. Not super-duper dark, but it was hard to see. The boy crawled up into the vent and did his best to crawl.

“So, uh, what’s the plan? Left? Right? Cathy, gimme some help here, what are…what are we doing?”

Either way, Morton didn’t feel good about being up in those vents. He had seen horror movies, vents only worked when you were up against slow zombies. Not like Dawn of the Dead Remake zombies that are fast, but like, slow zombies. Resident Evil zombies. Can’t climb stairs or ladders worth a crap, y’know?

But when you’re up against evil tentacles with brains created by crazy scientists in an underground (Morton’s guess) laboratory, vents can be…a bad place to be.

*i have permission from Falque to drag Tara along so she doesn't share the fate of the girl before...unless she fails to return, that is >.>*

So with Morty heading up the stairs, and Catherine following Lore, she was about to rush up the stairs when she turned back a glance to Tara. Great, just great; the girl was having another episode. Instead of waiting around to defend her, or for that nonsense to pass, Cath simply grabbed hold of the girl, focused adrenaline allowing her to yank the girl behind her and up the improvised stairs. 'Left... right... left... right... can't really see which way would be best... do these people think I can see the future or something?! Whatever! Just pick one!' "Take the left-hand path! Gogogo!"

Taking the steps at a slower pace was a risk, but so was falling and tumbling head over heels - and not just with her own body parts, mind you - and that would set her back even worse. So instead of rushing, she planted each step, her boots, although not ATRS-types, giving her a minimal amount of friction needed to keep herself from slipping. Tara was barely keeping pace behind her, but it was enough; along with Lore's ice wall, she didn't need to make another ice shield, and instead intensified her movement to get up to relative safety.

Reaching the hatch, Cath dragged her ass inside, then pulled Tara up with whatever energy was left, scooting as far back as she could to allow the other girl room - and banging her head a few times in the process. Finally, with a moment to breathe, Cath looked around her; the passage was cramped, but comfortably fit all of them as long as they crawled. She could see an edge where the tunnel curved away, but couldn't see through the wall to look at what laid beyond. Outlined were multiple gray areas, raised in her vision like slight bumps; those might be entry points for the Merculite things... or exits to their freedom.

Through gasps of breath as her adrenaline started to ebb, Cath tried her best to reiterate their current situation. "We shouldn't... stick around here... too long... Those damn things... are... are starting... to get tricky. Can't keep fighting them like... like this... forever... You wouldn't... wouldn't happen to know... know a way out, Ms. Telepath?"

Some of the closer limbs escaped, but the walls of ice that slammed against the doorway trapped many of them from their source. Almost instantly, the metallic limbs lost their cognition and rained down into puddles of mercury. With the wall of ice blocking the path, it seemed that whatever summoned those tentacles had lost interest in capturing them. There was no banging sound this time, only a quiet silence as the students mounted into the ceiling. Had these monsters given up for now?

Morton, the redheaded girl, Catherine, Tara, and Lore. In this order, the five of them crawled their way through the metal tunnel, the noise of their movements echoing throughout the passage. It wouldn’t be long before Morton felt his way to the first raised platform, easily removable whether by pulling it up or pushing it down. While Catherine could technically see through it, there was no aura to be made from the other side anyways.

The redhead struggled her way along the passage, as even a crawl was a marathon of difficulty for her. Still, her mind was not so broken to deny her telepathy. She replied to Catherine:

I…don’t know…

A moment passed.

There is no out.

Her psychic voice was polluted with despair.

…Trapped…

Lore took a deep few breaths when he realized the monster wasn't after them anymore... for now. That had NOT been fun in the least. He was exhausted to tell the truth and he just wanted to get out of here, but he knew they couldn't. Not yet... but not like they had a choice. They had one way out and that was the exit... right? Wrong. When the little girl contacted them and told them there was no escape, his jaw dropped. W... Wait what? No escape? Then why had they just done that? Why were they now going to crawl through what was akin to an airvent, which gave them more possibilities of getting trapped...

Darn it! Darn it darn it darn it!

Lore couldn't help but sniff a little bit. He thought they had been so close to being out of this nightmare. When he looked up and saw that the other three were already heading down the vent, he let out a sigh. They were rushing, not that they had to at this point, but still. Darn it! So close, yet so far away.

He pulled himself up in to the vent and followed behind, breaking his contact with his ice. There was only so far he could extend himself, plus he needed to conserve what little energy he had left at this point.

Catherine took the news a bit more... personally. "I thought you said there was an escape hatch or something up here!" she hissed, trying to keep her voice low so the echo wouldn't knock anyone off their feet. "We can't be trapped up here! There has to be a way out. We just have to look for it."

Maybe she was the only optimistic one in the bunch, but there was no way in hell she was letting herself think they were stuck here. Namely because if she let despair in now, it would be that much harder to be rid of when she needed a different emotion. Aside from that, this wasn't a very good time to be getting down about anything. They needed to find a way out, and by God they were going to. By now, the tentacle monster (monsters? how many of these pricks were there?) was getting smarter and faster, thus meaning that what they were doing wasn't going to work again. Which meant that they would have to figure out a different manner by which to dispose of this (these?) freak(s), and fast.

Holding up a shield for more than a minute at this point was impractical, so instead Cath simply left it to her awareness to tell when danger was nearby. If she were stronger, they could get out of this more easily. Or maybe they'd only face something a lot more angry or whatever. It never seemed like the bad guys ever played fair, always staying one step ahead of those trying to oppose them. Irritating, really.

But then again, there was the question of whether or not these things were evil or anything. Odds were that they were just as confused about everything as the students were. Furthermore, what of the other things they'd seen here? What were they to make of those items?

All of this started hurting her head, so Cath quit thinking about it. What was the use anyhow? Wishful thinking wasn't going to bring those other students back. They were dead, and would have to be reported as such. As well, there were supposedly more students missing. Were they all dead too? Catherine could only hope that they weren't. For the moment, it was up to the person in the lead to figure out where they were supposed to go. Just as long as they didn't run across any more student carcasses, she thought they might still have a chance at getting out of here, alive and in once piece.

CHOCOLATE. THE LORD OF ALL FOODS.
Our meek hero Morton was very confused in the vents. His fear had actually started to dissolve as he realized the tentacle monsters weren’t going to follow them into the vents. At least, for a little bit. Soon enough, Morton found a little…thing in the vent. He glanced down at it, squinting his eyes in the dim-ish light, ignoring the discussions between Catherine and the red-headed girl about the fact that there really wasn’t an escape. Wait, there wasn’t an escape? Morton turned his head around and tried to awkwardly speak, but it was…well, it was awkward. The vent was pretty narrow.

“Wait, there’s no escape? What kind of crap is that?”
He let out a sigh and let his face rest on the cool floor for a moment, letting out a sigh. He picked his head up a moment later and pushed down on the elevated platform, and was surprised to find that it glided down as easily as it did.

“…We have to keep going. This girl is dehydrated, delirious, and I really don’t want to know what these tentacles have done to her. So, I’m willing to bet her word is less than legitimate information on whether or not there’s an escape out of this B-movie hellhole,”

The boy let out another sigh and continued down the left pathway, as Catherine had instructed.

“There better be a damn exit out of here…” He muttered, more to himself than anyone else.

((‘Nother short one. This time I’ll be waiting for Atiri, however long that may be.))

Morton collapsed the loose panel onto the floor beneath. From the sound of the drop, it was clear the room was probably about the same height as the one they just escaped. The area itself had a small amount of light, perhaps only a few candles worth coming from a single lit panel, like the empty room they had first entered. No noise of smell came from the room, and it was hard to make anything out from their vantage point and distance.

While Morton tried to continue, the Redhead had stopped in front of the opening, inadvertently keeping the others behind her. Perhaps she was simply too weak to cross the gap, or too hesitant. Either way, she had stopped in her tracks. “Perhaps...go down here?” Indeed, there was that choice. Should they choose to continue, however, they would merely come up to a different panel in the next twenty-odd feet. On the subject of escape, the Redhead struggled to continue her train of thought.

I don’t know why I know that... I just...do?
I don’t know where we are or anything
I just know...we can’t get out.

Her psychic voice was strained and confused. She felt exceedingly miserable now as her mind seemed to betray itself. For Tara, there was something other than confusion and uncertainty. There was a red flag.

Thoughts. They run nearly all the time, rarely quiet. Sometimes, however, these thoughts become so consuming that the brain cannot handle that AND focus on moving. Some people find these thoughtful stupors easier to slip into than others. What Tara had found to be true is the more often you let your thoughts run away with you, the more likely the same is likely to happen again. And so it had.

So much new information. Her brain was trying very hard to adjust for the added information, filed away as it was, it was still a shock to her system. While she had delayed the inevitable initially, it had caught up with her as she tried to understand everything. With her eyes closed and her mind hard at work thinking, she didn’t hardly notice the change in the room. Not until someone grabbed her and began pulling her up. Her eyes shot open and in a flash she realized just how much more desperate the Mercurites had become. It was not pleasing. Luckily, the problem ceased to be hers.

She was up in a stuffy vent, yanked there in a way that made her bones ache,  and she could feel her damp clothes dripping puddles in the vent, and felt herself sliding on the puddles left behind from the others. As if the narrow metal prism wasn’t difficult enough to navigate, lets add water. Still, her brain was a little less foggy, though still focused. Until the girl began communicating again, and certain notes took hold in her mind.

Hesitation.

Despair, well enough. Were she an empath like some of her relatives she could feel that coming off most of the people around her. Confusion could be explained away in part by her previous trauma. But there was outright hesitation here, like a type of internal battle was happening, and she was unable to focus her thoughts near as correction.

Cold suspicion chilled her more than the water did and she paused briefly, hardly enough to be noticed.

Dominate lesser psychic beings…

“….. ….. ….. ….. ….. Zut.” It would have been nice to have telepathy at the moment in order to spread her misgiving, but perhaps that would make it worse. Perhaps the fact that her own psychic blood was hardly active would spare her notice. For the meantime, she began taking the redhead’s words with a special grain of salt reserved only for children and traitors.

When Morton collapsed the ground, and the redhead stopped the line from moving, Tara gave Catherine a nudge and whispered as quietly as possible. “Push her.”

It sounded callous. But it also sounded a portion of scared. The logic was there. She had stopped the line. In all likelihood, they’d all be going down anyway. She probably couldn’t go forward, even disregarding the possible mind control aspects here, it could simply be impossible. Morton had already gone before, and would likely catch the girl anyway, or was getting ready to help the rest of them down. If it WAS a trap, however, as her darker side pondered. Better to lose the trapper as well as one of their own. Perhaps the red head’s presence would deter any trap from setting off quite as well.

What a web… But she disliked kneeling in water on unforgiving metal, and lacked the patience at this moment in time to wait out the possible rat. No, at the moment, no matter how heartless it seemed, she whispered her advice, with a certain amount of her own fear and trepidation to ensure that the words came out as scared and concerned as opposed to cold and heartless, which came easier. Were there emotions a lie? No, but they were amplified to be more visible than they would normally be in this lull of the action.

Right or Wrong?

Better safe than eternally sorry. She was not intending on dying today. So, if the other psychic redhead had to take a bit of a fall, especially if, as she was suspecting, and growing more certain of, the girl was not in her full possession and was a tool of their captors? All the better.

At the very least, the line would get moving.

'Excuse me?!'

As should be expected, the request threw Catherine off. Under normal circumstances, she wasn't the kind of person to be so rude as to simply shove someone around. Unless it became absolutely necessary.

And thus, the request stood, taunting her to go against what her nature was, at it's very core.

Still, she remained silent for a moment, pondering. At least, now there was a moment for it, since there were no obvious dangers to be held against. Now that she thought of it... it was fairly convenient that the girl be alive still... Frankly, she shouldn't have been. So why her? Why was she still alive? Random selection? Chance? There had to be something...

Hive mind. Telepathy. Telekinesis. That girl was telepathic. Therefore... No, Catherine couldn't accept that. Nothing human could do that to another human -or could they? The Holocaust, the Soviet Union's brutality of their own people, North Korea's mind experiments, the more recent events in Iraq... Evo's Dawn..... If humans were capable of such atrocities, and their "enemy" wasn't human at all... perhaps...?

That thought frightened her the most. She had to keep telling herself that this wasn't a human being. So by doing that, was she becoming like them? Like these... alien... beings? These... things? She personally had no reason or need to hate them... except that she did - what they did to the original crew of this station, what they had done to the students, what they had done - and very likely were still doing - to this girl..

She didn't want to be like that, but was there a choice at the moment? She had stopped their line; she was halting their progress; she was slowing them down at the moment. These thoughts, and others like it, ran through her head.

All in all, the mental thinking process probably took less than twenty-five seconds - not because she was a slow thinker, nor because she was running over her other options, but because it was a choice, one that needed to be thought through. At the same time, she noted once more that the girl was contradicting herself, which seemed unusual for someone with a clear mind who was desperate to survive. And upon coming to the same conclusion as Tara, Catherine knew she was going to hate herself for this....probably... maybe...not likely...

Heaven helps those who help themselves.

Gulping back her fear of making things worse, she scooted her way past Lore as quietly as she could, pardoning herself silently in the process - and then, planting her hands on the unknown girl's back, stated with a slight quiver in her voice 'I'm sorry... Please don't die...'

And shoved her down the hole, with only a slight grunt of effort.

More or less, the last request part was a regret on her part, not a questioning about whether the girl would live or die. Though, if she landed on her head or neck... or on her back in the wrong way... there was no way to tell.

CHOCOLATE. THE LORD OF ALL FOODS.
The panel Morton pushed down broke away to reveal a room underneath, and the boy quickly crawled over the gap and then turned around awkwardly in the vent, glancing down into the dimly-lit room. Everyone seemed to have stopped, with the redhead in front, practically just…idling there, thinking, about…something. Something Morton didn’t want to know about. He crawled forward, peeking down into the room, and then without a word, crawled forward, dropping onto the floor with grace he honestly didn’t think he could pull off-if Sevens had taught him one thing, it was how to fall with grace. He took a few steps back, as to avoid anyone else who was falling through.

The boy squinted his eyes, attempting to see what was in the room. It was very, very dim. But, it was silent. Dead silent. There was no smell (Although he wasn’t sure if the tentacle monsters produced an odor). It seemed as if the only thing wrong with this room was that it was just really, really creepy. He cocked his head, and then as he glanced up, hearing some rustling, he saw the redhead falling from the ceiling. His first reaction was one of fear, but he reacted quickly, dropping down to one knee and catching the girl, at the same time, glancing up at the vent.

“What the hell are you guys doing?” He whispered, not sure why, standing up, making sure the girl was okay. If she needed to lean against him or sit down, he would help her.

“Catherine, can you…uh…I don’t think I really understand your power but, um…” He trailed off, unsure of what to say.

So they crawled. It wasn't a long crawl before they stopped again, Lore's fingers tapping impatiently on the metal of the shaft as he closed his eyes. This was so stupid. Why were they stopping? He just wanted them to continue. He was tired and frustrated. Were they going to be able to get out? Was he ever going to be able to go home again? All he wanted was to go back to sleep. He wouldn't even complain anymore about having to study constantly. He just wanted to go home!

He was starting to lose what patience he had. At first the girl had said that they could leave and then she was not telling the truth. Then she had told them all that they had to go in the vent and they were practically trapped. Now she wanted them to go down? Lore wasn't one to really be impatient, but now he was just getting frustrated. What was this girl doing? Why was she doing this? Didn't she want to get out? They were almost all dead and she was trying to mislead them? Or was she? He wasn't even sure anymore. With another sniffle, he didn't even notice as Catherine pushed past him and gave the girl a shove. He squeaked in surprise as he watched her disappear and looked over the side, hoping she was alright.

With a slight push, he dropped to the ground, yelping as he hit the ground below. It was a longer drop then he had thought, but he needed to get out of that enclosed space. He had to be doing something. He was getting claustrophobic. He just wanted this nightmare to be over and it wouldn't end by them sitting there and doing nothing! Biting his lip, he looked at the other two in the vent before taking a few deep breaths. He was on the verge of tears now, to be honest. He only had a few more tricks up his sleeve and one required most all of what little energy he had.

With a bit of a pout, he leaned up against the wall, trying to take deep breaths in order to help fight against the tears now bristling up inside of him. He just wanted to sit down and cry tears of frustration but he knew that wouldn't help.

It would make him feel better, but it wouldn't help.

((OOC: Happy note for Lore :D))

Paranoia, an unfortunate condition of the double-crossing mind. Tara, whose understanding of the Mercurite ecology was best of the group, yet still deliriously limited, had finally snapped at the poor, confused redhead out of fear. Catherine, following suit in her own creeping madness, had agreed to the act. The sickly telepath gave little resistance the Catherine’s shove as she tumbled down the hole with a single, gasping yelp. Were Morton not there catch her, she would have perished as certainly as the Earth orbits a star.

The redhead had nothing to say to her treatment, only a breakdown of confused and fearful sobs as her feeling of security around her would-be saviours was quickly degrading. She clung closely to Morton as her last grasp for safety, burrowing herself beneath his shoulder. She could barely manage to stand, however, and her legs were ready to give away at a moment’s notice.

Lore had passed Catherine and dropped down into the room as well, himself approaching wit’s end. As for the room itself, there was only a single panel of light turned on this time, but it was enough to make a fair outline of the area itself. The chamber appeared to be some sort of living quarters. At one end, furthest from the mostly closed two-piece door, were what looked like glass caskets, though they likely weren’t for housing the dead. The glass pods had several tubes protruding from them, their destination unknown as they slipped beneath the wall into nowhere. Nobody was inside the pods, but there was, however, a single small grey disc resting at the bottom of the case, roughly the size of a palm of the hand. As for the people, three humanoid skeletons were littered about the room. They had the same body shape as the two in the laboratory.

The sleeping chambers aside, the room had a series of lockers to the right of the door to the hallway. Some were locked with no apparent way to open them, while a few were left hung open. Inside were some odd-looking clothes, mostly a grey or blue hue of an odd fabric. Possibly similar to watercloth, though it felt a little rougher. In any case, unfolding one would show the initials I.A.S.A. near the left breast, sewn-on as a very familiar badge. Inside only one of the lockers was a series of familiar rifles, their magazine or whatever it was supposed to be empty. Beneath the three rifles were cases of what one would hope to be ammunition, but unfortunately, they were open and empty.

On the left side of the room was a single table, similar to the room they had left, with a flat grey disc mounted into a depression on the top. Possibly useless to Tara given that she already tapped into one of them, but perhaps with the smaller grey disc in the pod... . Meanwhile, resting against the table was one of the skeletons, a rifle grasped pathetically in its dead right hand, with a single rectangular bit of grey substance held in its left hand. Perhaps he was one second too late in reloading? The other two skeletons were resting in inconspicuous areas, one with a rifle in its own hands and the other apparently caught off-guard. Aside from this, there wasn’t much more to the room other than the sliding door being almost entirely closed, though with any luck the doors would need little resistance to pry with a few fingertips.

With the two males and one half-dead female on the bottom, it was time for Catherine and Tara to exit the crawlspace up top. Unfortunately, some grave complications arose, and the nature of the ceiling’s holes became abundantly clear. Before Catherine or Tara could make their first move down the hole, the hole itself had apparently closed. The edges of metal bent inwards as it sealed the exit, and though this makeshift plug was only a few centimetres thick, it was resistant to any beating. Meanwhile, as second lid had appeared, this metal inside the shaft forcibly bending and liquefying as it sealed the space between Catherine and Tara, separating them. Isolated from immediate assistance, the metallic monstrosities made their move. Like a train on its rails, two massive blobs of liquid metal filled the entire shape of the crawlspace, their tendrils flung out nearly ten feet in front, as one approached Catherine at frightening speed and another towards Tara with equal persistence.

It seems Tara wouldn’t quite have the chance to unlock more memories just yet. If ever.

Despite herself, maybe Catherine really was nearing the end of her rope. Very much about to slip right off, perhaps. Whatever control over her emotions that existed when this whole thing started was degrading, that much was for sure - and fast. She needed a moment to think, to sit down and collect her thoughts.

However, whatever perversion Fate had in mind for her would not allow it. After an act that defied her innate nature was committed, Cath tried to justify what had happened, but couldn't; she had nearly killed the girl, and was very likely going to be blamed for what had happened. Her mental state was in tatters, the ability to think and act falling aside to the needs of survival. She was starving, tired, and angry. Especially angry, though whether at herself for doing that, or at the things that were trying to kill her... hell, maybe even at the girl that had just suggested in a whisper for her to shove the other chick down. It was just indirect, unmitigated hate, that's all.

Well, there would be some use for channeling that soon enough. Just as she was about to stick her feet down the hole, it... wasn't a hole anymore. The thing closed up right in front of her. That sent her senses into high alert; Catherine reached back to grab at the other girl, Tara, but found a wall where air and flesh should have been.

"No....."
Her mind staggered to understand the meaning of it, but it wasn't hard to figure out.
"no no nO NO NOOOOO!!"
In vengeful wrath, she beat her fists against the wall, turning back just as a mass of writhing tentacles came racing at her, barely visible in her vision due to their high speed, but she caught on to the after-images. Instinct forced her shield into existence again barely a second after it registered that she would need it, though it's power was more augmented by her intangible fear and anger than by the neutral energy that flowed through her body. It was unstable, and she physically felt the impact of the tentacle as it hit, straining to keep it up as she also fought to stay conscious. She'd never used her power this much in a single day, and it was taking a toll upon her. As well, mostly unnoticed by Catherine at the moment given the current predicament, the freezing-cold aura that surrounded her powers was beginning to wain; she would need contact with Lore again to recharge that, and soon, within the next few minutes at the very least.

Hardening the shield, she turned back, pulled back a fist, and prayed, pouring as much energy as she could spare into her punch, hoping that it would have some effect upon the liquefied metal that separated her from Tara. After this, if it worked, she could keep the shield going for another minute or so at the most, though after that she would be too exhausted to continue fighting anymore for a good while. If her shield broke, however... well, that thought did not dare to cross her mind at the moment.

The room was creepy. More skeletons and more death was all that was down here. Maybe the girl was right. Maybe there wasn't anything else left for them here. Maybe there was no escape. He was so tired but he knew he had to keep going. They all had to keep going. Why hadn't the other two come down?

Lore sniffed as he looked up, waiting for the two girls to come down. He was getting impatient now. Why were they waiting up there? That was just asking for something to happen. What if...

His thought wasn't even completed as the vent seemed to seal and Lore screamed. He actually screamed. This couldn't be happening. This COULD NOT be happening. He could only watch in despair as the vent closed up and started to crinkle, the sounds of the girls inside permeating the silence with their own screams. He couldn't help it. He dropped down to the ground and started to run his hand over it, his body pumping with adrenaline. He had to help them! He had to help them!

Oh god, why wasn't he fast enough?! No, that line didn't go there! Wait, which spell was he doing?! SHIT!

Those were all thoughts as he drew, attempting to bring forth a circle but failing as his panicked state made drawing almost impossible. In fact, he was making more of a mess than anything else and he was starting to realize it, but he couldn't calm down. There wasn't time to calm down! The other two were in trouble! The sight of the skeletons around them emphasized that fact! They were going to die if he couldn't do anything!

And he was starting to realize that he couldn't. He kept messing up. He was fucking up so badly that he couldn't do anything anymore. With one final scream, he slammed his hands on the ground and started to sob, covering his ears to block the screams of the girls. The remains of a glowing mess beneath him of an attempted circle faded as he sobbed.

He was useless when they needed him the most.

Well, at least the likely traitor was no long blocking the exit. Perhaps Cath elt remorse on the matter, but all Tara felt was a vague twinge. She'd been counting on Morton catching the girl ,and it seemed that hunch came through. Good. Lore dropped down as well, and now if Cath would just get moving, she could see the new room and resume trying to solve this deilemma she'd unwittingly wandered into.

Idly, her thougths mused as she waited somewhat impatiently, her fingers tapping a rhythm agaisnt the metal. Vents were not good places to loiter after all. And yet, her thoughts drifted off. The next tiem students are disappearing, she would forego avoiding coffee. Regardless of its negative consequences, it had to be better than this. Her stomach lining would survive.

Then there was a creak, the uneasy sound of metal folding on itself. Light disappeared and her eyes went dark.

Now its not that Tara feared the dark, perse. But when your only real power depended on light, you are well aware of the absence of it. Not that she would dare use her power here. Not knowing what she did. And that was not enough as it was. there was a small pinprick of light from behind that let her know she was still where she had been before the light went out. She was about to call out for a role call...perhaps to regroup efforts on how to free the girls from this.

Her hand reached out to touch the warm flesh of the girl in front of her and met cold flat metal instead. The chill spread through her fingers to her very core, shivering as it went. The girl fragile form recoiled, but she quickly found her way to the cold surface again...because her awareness of the light disappeared. Either the light went out- not likely, unless on a timer.... or something was blocking the passage. She did not like the later, but the creeping feeling in her mind. No, she couldn't see anything. Not at all. but she could feel them, the force approaching in her mind, and her very bones trembled.

Solid walls on every side but one. Something coming on that one side. as each thought nipped at the heels of the next she felt colder and colder.... hard walls...cold walls. A loud thump on the other side, and screaming of the one word currently chanting itself under her active thoughts.

Solid...nonono.... no escape... .... no.... not possible... nonono.... Nowehere to run... nowhere to hide... no... NO! Nonononono Cold flat, hard metal everywhere, a relief against the metal she was expecting against her will. This would not bode well. she had pushed herself into every corner she could think of. Perhaps she was hoping a panel would give way. Perhaps she already knew that was a fell cause.

Wave after wave of panic now as she could practically feel them approaching. It wasn't taking this long. Her brain processed that much, but it felt like so much longer this fast paced attack. The anticipation, the anxiety was what was killing her now. At the moment, that was all. Just anticipating the rush that was coming. words formed, first softly, but as the synapses in her brain fired faster and the panic rushed to he surface, they grew in volume.

"sacre... sacre blue...." More realization hit, more panic came... "MERDE!!!! SE FAIRE ENCULER!!!!" No pounding. That would defeat herself before she had a chance to survive. though she did kick at one wall as she continued to shout."CE N'EST PAS POSSIBLE! NON! ARRêTEZ L'ALARME! NOOON! SACRAMENT...." Her time seemed almost out, as dragging as the terror had made it seem to take. One last shout as she felt them closer with her mind, could feel the success almost already.

Fear had her eyes jammed shut. They were useless anyway. Her mind whirred with the possibilites of what was going to happen now. None of them were liked, and most of them were responsible for the choked sob. Flashes of the room full of student bodies covered her rational thought like a grotesque blanket. Like that? No one deserved to die like that!!! Curled up into herself as much as was possible, she was braced for an impact with her mind half frozen with fear, and the other half creating terror the likes she had never felt. Instilled, yes, but tasted, no. What would be left? What had she missed out on? What was in the room below, and how much had not been done back home. She'd promised a letter to Michael and had been procrastinating that... She had never felt regret as she did now.
