AFTER STUDYING THE MAP? YOU NOW KNOW THAT TA-SARDAR-VAR MEANS "TURNING TO THE sARDARS" ON THE GOREAN COMPASS WHAT TERM IS USED TO INDICATE THE TRUE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AWAY FROM THE SARDARS? "accordingly the main division of the map are ta-sardar-var and the other seven taking the sardar as our "north pole" the other directions clockwise as earth clocks (gorean clock hands move in the opposite direction) would be first Ta-Sardar-van then vask (sometimes spoken of as verus var or the true turning away)" NOMADS OF GOR PAGE 3 NODDING YOU ARE COMING TO GRIPS WITH THE GOREAN COMPASS TA-SARDAR-VAR "TURNING TO THE SARDARS"AND VASK OR VERUS VAR "THE TRUE TURNING AWAY" WHAT ARE THE OTHER DIRECTIONS ON THE GOREAN COMPASS? "Accordingly the main divisions of the map are Ta-Sardar-Var and the other seven taking the Sardar as our "north pole" the other direction clockwise as earth clocks move (gorean clock hands move in the opposite direction) would be first ta-sardar-var then in order ror, rim, tun, vask(sometimes spoken of as verus var or the true turning away)cart klim and kail and then again of course ta-sardar-var" NOMADS OF GOR PAGE 3 |

"oddly enough one of the expressions in the tongue of gor for our sun was Lar-Torvis which means the central fire another pythagorean expression except that it had not been as I understand it originally used by the Pythagoreans to refer to the sun but to another body the more common expression for the sun was Tor-tu-gor" TARNSMAN OF GOR PAGE 16 |

"on the other hand " he said you will learn tht in lighting shelter agricultural techniques and medicine for example the Mortals or the Men below the Mountains are relatively advanced he looked at me amused i think You wonder he said why the numerous rather obvious deficits in our technolgy have not been required in spite of the priest kings it crosses your mind that ther must exist minds on this world capable of designing such things as say rifles and armored vehicles surely these things must be produced i urged and you are right he said grim;y from time to time they are but their owners are then destroyed bursting into flame like the envelope of blue metal yes it is flame death merely to possess a weapon of the interdicted sort sometimes bold individuals create or acquire such war materials and sometimes for as long as a year escape the flame death but sooner or later they are struck down his eyes were hard i once saw it happen he said TARNSMAN OF GOR TRUE OR FALS THE LEAVES FROM THE RENNEL PLANT ARE USED TO SPICE UP GOREAN MEALS "the wagon peoples are fascinated with the future and itssigns and though to hear them speak they put no store in such matters yet they do in practice give them great conideration i was told by kamchak that once an army of thousand wagons turned aside because a swarm of rennels poisonous crablight desert insects did not defend its broken nest crushed by the wheel of the lead wagon NOMADS OF GOR PAGE 27 |

"it would have been stored overnight i assumed in an amphora buried to the neck in the cool earth sometimes earth girls first brought to gor do not understand why so many of these two handled narrow necked vessels have such a narrow usually pointed base for they cannto stand upright on such a base they have not yet learmed that these vessels are not intoded to stand upright rather they are commonly fitted into a storage hole buried there to keep their contents cool the necks above the earth the pointed base of course presses into the soft earth at the bottom of the storage hole" MERCENARIES OF GOR PAGE 257 ________________________________________________________________ THERE ARE MANY DRINKS IN GOR BOTH ALCOHOLIC AND NON-ALCOHOLIC SOME ARE REGIONAL SOME ARE MORE WIDE SPREAD THIS COMMON DRINK IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO THE NOMADS OF THE DESERTS OF GOR AS WELL AS THE INUIT OF THE NORTH WHAT IS THIS DRINK? "in turn from the oases the nomads receive most importantly Sa_Tarna grain and the bazi tea....tea is extremely important to the nomads it is served hot and heavily sugared it gives them strength then in virtue of the sugar and cools them by making them sweat as well as stimulationg them it is drunk three small cups at a time carefully measured " TRIBESMEN OF GOR PAGES 37-38 _______________________________________________________________________ IS THERE POWDERED MILK ON GOR? "i brought up from the kitchen where i had been where i had been keeping it hot a vessel of black wine with sugars and cups and spoons too i had brought up a small bowl of powered bosk milk we had finished the creams last night and in any event it was unlikely they would have lasted the night if i had wanted have had to have gone to the market" GUARDSMAN OF GOR PAGE 295 ____________________________________________ THREE BEASTS ON GOR ARE HAVESTED FOR THEIR MILK CAN YOU NAME THEM? THIS IS A MOUTH BURNING CONCOCTION ESPECIALLY POPULAR WITH SOME OF THE LOWER CASTS PARTICULARLY THOSE WHO PERFORM STRENUOUS LABORS IT IS MADE OF DILUTED WINE,JUICE AND SPICES WHAT IS IT? "Kal-da is a hot drink almost scalding made of diluted ka-la-na wine mixed with citrus juices and stinging spice i did not care much for this mouth burning concoction but it was popular with some of the lower castes particularly those who performed strenuous manual labor i expected its popularity was due more to its capacity to warm a man and stick to his ribs and its cheapness a poor grade of ka la na wine being used in its brewing than to any gustatory excellence" OUTLAW OF GOR PAGE 178 "behind the counter the thin bald headed proprietor his forehead glistening his slick black apron stained with spices juices and wine busily worked his long mixing paddle in a vast pot of bubbling kal-da my nose wrinkled there was no mistaking the smell of brewing kal-da" OUTLAW OF GOR PAGE 178 THIS DRINK SIMILAR TO A COMMON EARTH BEVERAGE IS CONSIDERED A RARE AND UNUSUAL LUXURY OUTSIDE THE REGION IN WHICH THE BASE INGREDIENT IS GROWN EVEN IN THAT REGION IT IS MORE COMMONLY DRANK AMONGST THE HIGHER CASTE WHAT IS THE DRINK AND WHERE IS THE BASE INGREDIENT GROWN? "the air was fresh and beutiful soon i smelled the frying of vulo eggs in a large flat pan and the unmistakable odor of coffee or as the goreans express it black wine the beans grow largely on the slopes of the Thentis mountains the original beans i suppose had been brought like certain other gorean products from Earth it is not impossible of course that the opposite in the case that black wine is native to gor and that the origin of Earth's coffee beans is gorean i regard this as unlikely however because black wine is far more common on Earth than on gor where it is except for the city of Thentis a city famed for her tarn flocks and her surrounding villages a somewhat rare and unusual luxury" SLAVE GIRL OF GOR PAGE 76 IN THE NORTH THIS DRINK MADE FROM FERMENTED HONEY WATER AND SPICES TENDS TO BE FAVORED OVER PAGA WHAT IS THE DRINK? "in the north generally mead made with fermented honey and water and often spices and such tends to be favored over paga" VAGABONDS OF GOR PAGE 11 |

WITHIN THE CONCEPT OF DOUBLE KNOWLEDGE WHICH GROUP OF PEOPLE IS TAUGHT SECOND KNOWLEDGE "i wondered however if the Second Knowledge that of the intellectuals might not be as carefully tailored to preclude inquiry on their level as the first knowledge apparently was to preclude inquiry on the level of the lower castes i would guess that there is a third knowledge that reserved to the priest kings" TARNSMAN OF GOR PAGE 27 THERE IS WITHIN THE CULTURE OF GOR THE CONCEPT OF DOUBLE KNOWLEDGE EXPLAIN THE NATURE OF DOUBLE KNOWLEDGE "i was also instructed in the double knowledge that is i was instructed in what the people on the whole believed and then i was instructed in what the intellectuals were to know sometimes there as a surprising discrepancy between the two for example the population as a whole the caste below the high castes were encouraged to believe that their world was a broad flat disk perhaps this was to dicourage them from exploration or to develop in them a habit of relying on common sense prejudices something of a social control device on the other hand the high caste specifically the warriors, builder scribes initiates and physicians were told the truth in such matters perhaps because it was thought they would eventually determine it themselves from observations such as the shadow of their planet on on one or another of gor's three small moon during eclipses the phenomenon of sighting the tops of distant objects firs and the fact that certain stars could not be seen from certain geographical positions if the planet had been flat precisely the same set of stars would have been observable from every position on its serface" TARNSMAN OF GOR PAGE 27 |

YOU COME UPON A MASTER AND SLAVE HE IS POINTING TO THE GROUND AT HIS FEET THE SLAVE TREMBLING A TEAR ROLLING DOWN HER CHEEK KNEELS QUICKLY CROSSES HER WRISTS BEFORE HER AS IF BOUND THEN FOLDS HER BODY LOWERING HER HEAD TO THE STONES EXPOSING THE BOW OF HER BACK WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN NEXT? "i went to Targo trembling and knelt at His feet my head to the boards of the floor i crossed my wrists beneath me and touched my head to the floor exposing the bow of my back it is the submissive posture of a slave girl who is to be punished it is called kneeling to the whip i shook visibly at his feet" CAPTIVE OF GOR PAGE 200 STANDING ON THE DOCKS YOU WATCH AS A SHIP TURNS AND HEADS OUT INTO THE CALM WATERS OF THE THASSA YOU STARE IN AMAZEMENT AT THE SHIP ARE THOSE EYES? YOU LOOK CLOSER YES THE SHIP HAS EYES WHY WOULD EYES BE PAINTED ON THE BOW OF THE SHIP? "the eyes of the ship painted on either side of the bow would now have turned toward the opening of the harbor of Telnus ships of gor of whatever class or type always have eyes painted on them either in a head surmounting the prow as in tarn ships or as in the Rena as in round ships on either side of the bow it is the last thing that is done for the ship before it is first launched the painting of the eyes reflects the gorean seamans belief that the ship is a living thing she is accordingly given eyes that she may see her way" RAIDERS OF GOR PAGE 183 IN THE DARKNESS YOU STRAIN TO SEE THE SOURCE OF THE NOISE IN THE BURSY YOU SEE WHAT YOU THINK MIGHT BE A HUGE LIZARD BUT AS THE MOONLIGHT STRIKES IT YOU SEE THAT SINEWY BODY IS COVERED IN FUR LONG AND THICK ITS EYES CATCH THE LIGHT AND FLASH LIKE RED COPPER IT SNARLS IT HAS SIX LEGS WHAT IS IT? "i saw it in the darkness emerging from the brush i thought at first because of its sinuous movement that it was a great snake but it was not i throught seeing it holding itself closely to the ground but yet free of the ground that it might be a long bodied lizard then as moonlight fell through the tree branches in a pattern across its snout and neck i swa not scales but rippled fur long and thick its eye caught the light and flashed like burning copper it snarled i gasped it had six legs it was perhaps twenty feet in length perhaps eleven hundred pounds in weight it approached sinuously hissing it is called a sleen" SLAVE GIRL OF GOR PAGE 38 A SLAVE IS BROUGHT BEFORE HER NEW OWNER SHE KNEELS AND TO HER ASTONISHMENTS SHE FINDS HERSELF IN FAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS SHE IS BACK IN THE HOME STONE FROM WHICH SHE WAS CAPTURED AS A FREE WOMAN TAKEN AWAY AND ENSLAVED A MAN SHE KNOWS AS HER FATHER STANDS LOOKING DOWN HER WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE GIRLS FATE? "as a last remark it might be noted that it is generally understand that any woman who becomes a slave should be kept a slave" as an extreme example let us suppose that the daughter of a household is captured carried away and enslaved then let us suppose that she say through exchanges buyings and sellings and such is recovered by her family they will not free her but disowning her will keep her as a slave as any other slave in the house she will serve as any other slave and as any other slave if her work is not satisfactory will be lashed. eventually onces she has fully understand how she has shamed and humiliated her family she will be sold out of the house as might be any other slave cast her into the markets she is now only goods it is the gorean way KUR OF GOR PAGE 56 THE HERLIT IS A LARGE BROAD WINGED CARNIVOROUS BIRD SOMETIMES CALLED THE SUN STRIKER WHY DOES IT HAVE THAT NAME? "the wand before us was some seve or eight feet high it is of this height apparently that it may be seen above the snow during the winter moons such as waniyetuwi and wanicokanwi it was of peeled ka la na wood and from its top there dangled two long narrow yello black tipped feathers from the tail of the taloned herlit a large broad winged carnivorous bird sometimes in gorean called the sun striker or more literally though in clumsier english out of the dun it strikes presumably from its habit of making its descent and strike on prey like the tarn with the sun above and behind it similar wands i could see some two hundred yards away on either side to the left and right" SAVAGES OF GOR PAGE 143 |
