Iraqi reporter throws shoes at 'dog' Bush

Missed: A journalist hurls a shoe at US President George W Bush (APTN)

US President George W Bush's surprise visit to Iraq overnight was marred when an Iraqi journalist threw two shoes at him during a press conference.

Mr Bush was paying a surprise visit to Baghdad just a month before he is due to leave office.

After walking the red carpet inspecting Iraqi troops, Mr Bush held talks with the country's President Jalal Talabani.

"The work hasn't been easy, but it's been necessary for American security, Iraqi hope and world peace," he said.

Later an Iraqi reporter shouted "This is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog," in Arabic and threw his shoes at Mr Bush during a news conference in the city.

Iraqi security officers and US secret service agents leapt at the man and dragged him struggling and screaming out of the room where Mr Bush was giving a news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

The shoes missed Mr Bush, who ducked the first and then saw the other sail over his head as he stood next to Mr Maliki. Mr Bush smiled uncomfortably and Mr Maliki looked strained.

"It doesn't bother me," Mr Bush said, urging everyone to calm down as a ruckus broke out in the conference room.

When asked about the incident shortly after, Mr Bush made light of it. "I didn't feel the least threatened by it," he said.

Other Iraqi journalists apologised on behalf of their colleague, a television journalist.

The visit came a day after the US defence secretary Robert Gates told American troops the mission in Iraq was in its end game.

But the American-led reconstruction of Iraq has been blasted in a US federal report published by the New York Times, which says the project was crippled by poor planning, waste and deception.

The US President has also signed a new security pact which stipulates that American troops must pull out of the Iraq by the end of 2011.

President-elect Barack Obama has promised he will bring all US combat troops home from Iraq a little over a year after taking office, as long as commanders agree a withdrawal will not endanger American personnel or Iraq's security.

What is the need to denigrate dogs? Is it meant to imply that Bush, for causing mass suffering, acted somehow more like a dog than a human? And that that's a bad thing? That's what I make of it. It's both funny and sad that after constant cases of human cruelty, greed, and selfishness how so many still believe we're all that.

In Arabic calling someone a Jaheesh [Donkey], or dog [not sure of the word in Arabic] is very offensive.
Almost like Bitch here - do you feel the same way about people using that word? It also 'denigrates dogs'. :)

I don't see what his problem is.What did he hope to achieve by throwing his shoes at a world leader? He might get two years in jail for his trouble...that is the penalty for insulting a head of state under Iraqi law. Everything ends eventually. There is no use continuing to hate on dubya...by January 20 he will be gone.

Well, it was him who pulled the whole WMD fiasco and devestated Iraq further than Saddam had [which is definitely saying something].

I don't agree with the grounds on which the US went to war but the removal of Saddam's regime is good news for Iraqis. In relation to the violence, I believe things will settle when the US are completely out. People there are now a lot more free than they were. I believe Iraq will go from strength to strength economically and things will get much better when they are able to fully manage and run everything themselves. Aside from the presence of US troops, I believe they are pretty much there. For better or worse the damage is done. Hopefully the end of this dark period is near. I think that it is...now things are going to get better in Iraq.

Hurhurhur, serves him right:D
But it was a stupid thing to do, he'll probably serve some years in prison for that.

It seems to me the guy was just angry. I heard he lost many friends/family in Iraq due to violence.

It would have been pretty funny if the journalist had kept his shoes on and hit Bush with one of these..
