I've heard of a lot of places on the internet that promote eating disorders and tonight I stumled upon one...

Sure, it should be banned. But I think the question is really too look at the people who are taking this on board, and why they are... I'm sure that it's more than just 'proanorexia' sites.

Were do we draw the line? If websites like this are banned, why aren't glossy magazines that promote unrealitic descriptions of women?

The only difference is sites like this are more 'in your face'. But they both have the same message, girls should look like this...

You can't deny access to these sort of sites. For those of us who do not suffer from these sorts of eating disorders (be it anorexia or bulimia), it's pretty damn messed up trying to understand what is going on in the heads of people who do. I've got a couple of friends that have admitted to me that they are bulimic and the thing is, they don't want help.
So the thing they do is turn to sites like this. It's not so much that they are "for" anorexia, but rather they are "for" people who understand what it is. To take down these sort of sites is to shut off another avenue to these people. In a sense, being able to talk in anonymity about the subject is sort of therapeutic for these people who live in a world where they get continuously stared at and continuously feel bad about their body image.

I think that the desire to ban these sites is just a knee jerk reaction - one of many that has happened since Rudd came to be PM (Bill Henson anyone?)
If you're going to ban these sites under the name of fighting anorexia, then you should be banning all photos of ridiculously skinny girls, like the ones in those fashion magazines.

To fight the problem, you need to make a plan and attack it on all fronts, not just do something to appease a few people to make you look good.

I agree that taking down websites such as the one listed will 'shut down' an avenue where people unfortunately suffering from body image issues can talk out their problems, but you must agree that their is a line cross here. I know of websites that exist where people talk out their issues in a healthy environment, but here i believe the website is actaully FOR anorexia not FOR the people that understand the mindset.
i just imagine young girls who feel a little vulnerable, stumbling across websites like these and totally being led down the wrong path. All in all its a tough one to call. But i think the website has a negative effect on its users, but i admit, i woulndt know.

What happened to the freedom and variation?

Why does this even deserve a mention?

freedom and variation are fine, until they start to affect people the way this does.
is it good for diversity to have people a lot skinnier than the norm? probably! is it good for society for them to be being supported to survive by, firstly tax dollars, and secondly clinging onto the life they have left unless they improve their habits.

Before I go on, I just want to say this is NOT a personal attack in case it gets construed that way.

Firstly, I think we need to have a little faith in our younger generations. I have a cousin that sometimes seems to be a bit of a ditz and follower of trends. But if she came across this website, I have faith in the fact that she's got her head screwed on the right way and will see that this stuff is disturbing. I have faith that she can work out for herself that disorders like this are not right.

Secondly, websites like this aren't as big a problem as the fact that fashion magazines continuously have models that are ridiculously thin. Exposure to these images on young men and women is so much larger than this website that these disorders have their roots there. So like I said before, if you're gonna shut down these sites in the name of 'fighting anorexia', then you need to do something similar with magazines.

Thirdly, it's not like people simply stumble onto these websites. They're not well linked to major sites, and if you want to find them, then you've got to look for them!

Lastly, if you think that this website has a negative effect, then that is your choice. If you wish to censor it from your children, then you should do so. But when people start wanting to censor it for everyone, then that is crossing the line. People should be making individual opinions on what they should see/hear/watch. But if public opinion sways the government into action to remove these sites, that is wrong.

Gino is absolutely right. There is no evidence to suggest that this site has a negative effect on it's users. All the advice on the site helps girls who already have a problem. If you're going to have an eating disorder at least this site helps them do it with minimal risk. I would imagine most girls with an eating disorder have some level of mental illness too - this site provides a good support network.

To suggest this site be banned is extreme. Do you really want to live in a nanny state?

I think there's allot of misunderstanding about just the word pro-anorexia, because it's often used by communities/forums/sites that have the usual thinspiration, the tips & tricks, but like said above they do share support. But some take it to extremes, where it becomes competative: especially when there are pictures involved - same issue is shared with the self injury communities and those overlap on allot of points.

It's all about the moderators, I've seen bad things happen on eating disorder sites, from competition to illegal/dangerous pills being idealised and even people giving out links on where/how to get them. And it's true what Gino says, it's the tip of the iceberg, it lures you in - if you want it bad enough you will go seek for the forums where anything goes. They're just hidden from most people. I've seen pictures of famine & war regions glamourised, because "wow, look at those collar bones" it's sick, but true.

I don't think they should be banned, people should reach out and try to turn around or at least be a positive influence. Banning would mean less moderation, less support..
