BIG DAY OUT 2009
THE OFFICIAL FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

With the global economy on the brink of collapse, what better time to ask people to hand over their hard earned money to escape the world for a day.

And who better to prove to you that investing in music is safer and returns much more than banks any day: the man who has seen it all, Neil Young.

This is a proud moment for BDO. After 17 years of producing the most dynamic, entertaining and challenging event we possibly can, this year’s shows promise to stand out from all others.

From the dynamic sounds of Arctic Monkeys or the lush depth of TV on the Radio to the wealth of great local talent or the welcome return of the Prodigy, the world’s biggest travellin’ circus will be once again back on the road next January.

We are also working on making sure the Melbourne site is green, has shade and offers the level of enjoyment you deserve. Drought or no drought.

So come and join us for just one day. We hope the first announcement will satisfy your musical needs, but for those who need more, there will be a second announcement in November...

BIG DAY OUT is honoured to announce the arrival of one of those rare modern musicians for whom the term “legend” is more under than over-statement: NEIL YOUNG. At a prolific phase of his 40-year-plus career, YOUNG is leading his band through eclectic set lists, picking from 2008’s Chrome Dreams II, delving into classics like Hey Hey, My My, and venting his activist’s spleen on Let’s Impeach the President. Witness the many faces of a true rock icon, NEIL YOUNG at BIG DAY OUT 2009. All shows

We bet that ARCTIC MONKEYS look good on the BIG DAY OUT stage...'cos that's exactly where they'll be this summer, inspiring a frenzy of indie dancing as they whip out tunes from their world-beating albums, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and Favourite Worst Nightmare. But wait, there's more – it appears the lads have decamped to the Californian desert to begin laying down album No.3… with none other than Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme manning the desk. The rock'n'roll mind boggles at what they'll come up with. Be first in the world to hear the results when Sheffield's own ARCTIC MONKEYS reveal all at BIG DAY OUT. All shows

Run away boys THE LIVING END had a monumental start to their career producing the highest selling Aussie single of the entire nineties with their EP/single “Prisoner of Society”/ “Second Solution”. And their well-loved punkabilly sing-alongs have continued to rock us out over the past ten years…but enough talk of the past! THE LIVING END return to stand and deliver a rousing festival set for BIG DAY OUT fans this summer, with blistering hits from their uber successful LP White Noise. Recorded with the assistance of John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr) and mixed by the legendary Brendan O’Brien (AC/DC and Pearl Jam) it wouldn’t be stretching the truth to say this album is of the finest rock’n’roll pedigree. Dig it live at BDO! All shows

Smack my BIG DAY OUT up! It’s the one, the only, the original, THE PRODIGY, back for BDO No.4. The British pioneers of crash-bang-boom rocktronica will be armed with a brand new album (due in February), and the same old fierceness. After leaving festival fields littered with blown minds all across the European summer, Liam, Maxim and Keith are in rare form. What’s the new stuff like? Liam Howlett has dropped the words “mad”, “buzzing”, “on fire” and “fresh”. You could take his word for it, or just get it straight in yo’ face when THE PRODIGY invade BIG DAY OUT 2009. All shows

SNEAKY SOUND SYSTEM have been spreading the good word far and wide for their brand new sophomore Number 1 album 2, (got that?) touring the UK, even fronting up at Glastonbury for an ass-busting set of groovy dance tunes. 2009 will see SNEAKY SOUND SYSTEM return to BIG DAY OUT to set some jives free for crazy dance music fans on Australian and NZ shores! Their slow burning successful debut album delivered four singles which, at one stage, were all in the top forty chart AT THE SAME TIME! Talk about huge. And the album no less, spent 69 weeks in the Top 100. Cut to the present day, and 2008 sees radio stations across the country spinning their catchy wistful electro-dance single “Kansas City”. SNEAKY are bound to set the kids bouncing at the BIG DAY OUT. Don’t go and do something stupid like miss ‘em now! All shows

We couldn’t help it; we had an evil urge to throw MY MORNING JACKET into the BIG DAY OUT 2009 mix. This Kentucky five-piece has graduated from barely-kept indie secret to mainstay status at US festivals like Bonnaroo Coachella, and will even play Madison Square Garden this New Year’s Eve. Their 2008 album, Evil Urges, continued an unfettered string of critical acclaim, while mixing funk, falsetto and prog into their classic rock cocktail. “I need a human by my side,” frontman Jim James sings on the new album. Do him a solid and keep MY MORNING JACKET company at BIG DAY OUT. All shows

From Perth to the world… now PENDULUM are swinging their way home for BIG DAY OUT. With UK No.2 album In Silico under their belts, the drum’n’bass upstarts have morphed into something altogether new – a post-rave mash-up, perhaps? Whatever it is they do, it’s explosive – fan raves from their recent UK festival sets include words like “immense”, “class” and “the future lies here”. The band’s motto is simple: “We spend nearly every waking moment trying to create music that takes you out of this universe.” Fasten your seatbelts, PENDULUM are on deck for BIG DAY OUT 2009. All shows

Ready… Aim… Scream! The “best British band to emerge in years” (thanks, Q mag), Welsh metal-core heroes BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE are bringing their in-your-face aural assault to this summer’s BIG DAY OUT. On their second album, Scream Aim Fire, BFMV are, frontman Matt Tuck says, “Better, fresher, harder and more real”. Damn right. Newly minted Best British Band at the 2008 Kerrang! Awards, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE are a powerful voice of a new metal generation. Join the chorus at BIG DAY OUT 2009. All shows

They won’t fit in any musical pigeonholes, but New York five-piece TV ON THE RADIO are a perfect fit for BIG DAY OUT. Drawing on post-rock, gospel, new wave and deep dub, TVOTR have won critical praise and defied preconceptions. Their third album, the spanking new Dear Science, has already been declared an “art-rock symphony”. Owners of a spellbinding, combustible live show, the Brooklyn boys of TVOTR will set BIG DAY OUT 2009 alight. All shows

Who’s gonna play ghetto-tech to the indie kids? Acid to the housed-up hordes? Who’s gonna put the psychedelic wobbliness and the electro sci-fi in BIG DAY OUT 2009? Get ready to dance your arse off, ’cos the answer is… SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO. London lads James Ford and Jas Shaw make “good, old fashioned, analogue party music”. You may have heard it on 2007’s sweaty, dirty, catchy-as-hell album Attack Decay Sustain Release. What’s for sure is that it made you move. So get a move on – to SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO at BIG DAY OUT 2009. All shows

Manchester duo THE TING TINGS are here to put the spunk in the summer and the buzz in BIG DAY OUT. The biggest noisemakers of the past year, Katie White and Jules De Martino scored a knock-out with a one-two punch of alt-pop perfection in the shape of singles Great DJ and That’s Not My Name. Next came an instant UK No.1 album in We Started Nothing, and live shows best described by NME as “short, sharp and perfectly formed”. All proof that that THE TING TINGS have definitely started something. But what, exactly? Find the answer at BIG DAY OUT. All shows

After eleven years playing to the world with bands Salmonella Dub, Shapeshifter and Concord Dawn, TIKI TAANE embarked on his solo career in January 2007. An acclaimed musician in his own right Tiki has pushed the boundaries of his own creativity with a fearless and innovative musical mélange of reggae, dub, rock and pop on his debut top ten album Past Present Future which featured the singles "Tangaroa", "Now This Is It" and the NZ number 1 “Always on my Mind”. All shows

Is it dance? Is it rock? Yes! It’s CUT COPY!! 2008 has launched the triumphant return of these electro pioneers: a new album In Ghost Colours which busted into the charts at number one, and sell out shows around the globe. The GLOBE people! The band’s 2004 debut Bright Like Neon Love introduced us to the era-defying hits “Going Nowhere” and “Saturdays” (to name a few) we came to know and love. This summer the BIG DAY OUT will play host CUT COPY’s intergalactic pop and guitar heavy stomp - look out for them comin’ atchya live, synths blazing, at the BDO! All Australian shows

2008 has been a busy year for progressive Australian rockers Flynn Gower, Lucius Borich, Luke Gower - aka COG. With their second album Sharing Space released in April, a massive two month tour to Australia wide to support it’s release through May and June followed by their first UK shows over the European summer, you could even say its been an epic year for these lads. And epic is the best way to describe the trio's multi faceted signature heavy sound. This is an album that truly captures the power of COG which Borich described as "some of our best work", and with the FF miles clocking up to match their extensive touring of recent months, you’re in for one hell of one tight kick-arse show at the BIG DAY OUT. All Australian shows

After touring in early 2008 with the likes of Interpol and Kings of Leon, YOUTH GROUP released their sumptuous 4th album The Night is Ours. The follow on from their ARIA Award winning Casino Twilight Dogs, their new LP dishes up lashings of lush layers of wide screen, surround-sound indie rock, and features the glitteringly melodic single “Two Sides”. Recorded in a makeshift studio near the shores of Sydney Harbour, and heralded with a nautical album launch on board a boat, this summer YOUTH GROUP continue their adventure on the high seas of rock’n’roll and set sail with the good ship BIG DAY OUT to take their music to fans across the country. All Australian shows

Bris-vegas indie darlings THE GRATES will bring the gutsy party anthems to BIG DAY OUT 2009. Their catchy yet edgy pop is destined to get inside your brain and stay there and will, without a doubt, have shoes aplenty shuffling on the dance floor this summer. With their debut album Gravity Won’t Get You High (2006) THE GRATES toured extensively winning hearts, minds and family pets across the country. This year sees their second album, Teeth Lost, Hearts Won: a major musical milestone for the band as they step up with a more sophisticated brand of raucousness, which they’ll be shakin’ for YOU live at the BDO! All Australian shows

Well they’re not actually birds and they’re not from Tokyo. They’re musicians and they’re from Western Australia, but their unstoppable force in rock music goes by the name of BIRDS OF TOKYO. At the front of this momentous rock extravaganza is one of the busiest front men in the business, Ian Kenny, who takes to the stage with another of WA’s favourites, Karnivool. Less than 16-months after their independent debut, Day One, BIRDS OF TOKYO take flight with their darker but pop-hook laden follow-up Universes. The album has won fans across the board clocking on at number 3 on the ARIA charts as well as winning them a nomination for a J Award in August. BIRDS OF TOKYO bring their driving guitars and straight up catchy rock to the BIG DAY OUT this summer. All Australian shows

Well-loved Aussie hip-hop crew TZU board the BIG DAY OUT tour bus for the first time in 2009. After two critically lauded LPs Position Correction (2004), Smiling at Strangers (2006) in 2008, Yerock, Joelistics, Count Bounce, and Paso Bionic have launched their music into a new orbit with Computer Love which landed at number 23 on the Australian music charts. From the swinging pop hip-hop of “Get Up”, to the power and the passion of “Cowboys” TZU have the technology, the flows and the style, and the beats with some laid back, funky down-under flavour with lyrical intelligence to boot. The Sun Herald advises us to, “Expect good times and a party atmosphere." We concur! All Australian shows

EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING is being hailed the best live rock band in the country for their one hell of an arse-kicking live show, filled with shambolic humorous antics so entertaining that Devo took a shine to ‘em and asked them to join their tour around the country. These new unassuming overlords of rock have bestowed a new album upon us in 2008, Primary Colours which surprised everyone, including the band, when it was nominated for Best Rock Album at this year’s ARIA Awards. Join us for some sunny, slacker garage rock, and a relaxed and rollicking good time with EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING at the BIG DAY OUT. All Australian shows

Stay tuned for the second announcement of artists coming soon!

Hello music fans.

Big thanks to everyone for their support for the Big Day Out once again this year.

With Sydney and Gold Coast tickets snapped up within hours and all shows heading towards sell outs it is great to know that you trust us once again to deliver a wonderful experience.

Our new musical offerings are ready to be unveiled. We truly believe these new acts are impressive additions to an already stellar lineup.

Soon we will also announce our final musical acts, visual art installations, special attractions and the world of the Lilyworld.

We hope you can join us for the day.

Two down, one to go….

Roll up! Roll up! Rock ’n’ roll ringmaster SERJ TANKIAN has donned his top hat and will be cracking the whip at BIG DAY OUT 2009. The System of a Down front man has gone solo with the multi-layered album Elect the Dead. Backed by his band the FCC, TANKIAN’s show is a vaudevillian explosion – part comedic, part heart-attack serious. A showman like no other, SERJ TANKIAN is guaranteed to bring the drama at BIG DAY OUT this summer. (ALL SHOWS)

BIG DAY OUT is dedicated to providing good times. And to help us do this in 2009, we’ve called on the band dubbed Boston’s answer to the Ramones – the legendary DROPKICK MURPHYS. This loud, raucous and chaotic seven-piece Celtic punk combo hits the stage with one goal: to play music that creates an all-for-one, one-for-all environment where everyone is encouraged to participate, sing along, and have a good time. Sounds good to us! So let the good times roll with DROPKICK MURPHYS at BIG DAY OUT 2009. (ALL SHOWS)

Do not underestimate the charm of BLACK KIDS. They won’t teach your boyfriend how to dance, but this feel-good Florida five-piece will help you put your best foot forward at BIG DAY OUT 2009. Led by Reggie Youngblood’s “catchy tunes about dancing and desire”, BLACK KIDS have put a fresh spin on retro sounds with their irresistible debut album Partie Traumatic. From artist-to-watch to buzz band to real deal in the space of only three years, see BLACK KIDS continue their stratospheric rise at BIG DAY OUT. (ALL SHOWS)

When BIG DAY OUT felt that burning desire to get on the floor, there was only one band to call: please welcome back everybody’s favourite synth-wielders, London’s HOT CHIP. “The most effortlessly cool band in Ravesville” (thanks, NME) are set to scintillate and shake up the summer with tunes from their third album, Made in the Dark. For a festival experience packing personality and electro-pop perfection, it gets no hotter than HOT CHIP at BIG DAY OUT 2009. (ALL SHOWS)

Summer Down Under is so hot, BIG DAY OUT is calling in The Cool – the head-spinning wordplay of Chicago hip hop trailblazer LUPE FIASCO. Once protégé to Kanye, Jay-Z and Pharrell, LUPE’s second album, The Cool, whose first single “Superstar” (featuring Matthew Santos) has shot him into the big leagues in his own right. This smart, charismatic and energetic performer and his band are coming to teach you the art of being cool. School’s in for summer with LUPE FIASCO at BIG DAY OUT 2009. (ALL SHOWS)

Forget the father and the son, all BIG DAY OUT needs is HOLY GHOST! Part of the DFA stable, HOLY GHOST! is Brooklyn duo Nicholas Millhiser and Alexander Frankel. Obsessed with analog synths, thumping disco, and older than old school production, the pair busted out their own moves on the majestically squelchy single Hold On, and have spiced up other people's moves with remixes for Cut Copy, MGMT and Moby. Let the spirit move you when HOLY GHOST! enter the body of BIG DAY OUT 2009. (ALL SHOWS)

BIG DAY OUT is going back to the future, and the man at the wheel of the DeLorean is Z*TRIP. The LA DJ once regarded the originator and king of the mash up movement, Z*TRIP is now mixing things up differently – classics, soul, up-tempo and b-boy jams, rock riffs, old school hip hop, all feeding into something new, something totally Z*TRIP. He’s DJed for change for Obama in the States, now Z*TRIP will be changing it up at BIG DAY OUT 2009. (NZ & EAST COAST ONLY)

Early in 1984, an inner city Sydney band called DIED PRETTY set out to create their own distinctive style, and challenge the musical preconceptions of the time. They quickly garnered a reputation for live shows full of raw passion, intensity, and more often than not, complete disintegration. After 18 years together and eight seminal albums, 2002 signalled the end for this five-piece and they played their last shows. Fast forward to present day, and 2008 has seen former band mates Peno, Myers, Welsh, Clark and Hoey reunite. DIED PRETTY played the first BIG DAY OUT in 1992, and in 2009 they return to the BDO stage to show us their music has well and truly stood the test of time. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

It’s been six years since THE VINES ram-raided their way into the public consciousness. In this time, THE VINES have experienced an accelerated career lived out very publicly in a whirlwind of brilliant pop records, legendary gigs and gruelling world tours, breakdowns, break ups and the occasional fug of spliff smoke. Roll on 2008 and the release of their fourth album Melodia which greets the world with the kind of blinking, wide eyed enthusiasm of a band just out of the garage and it’s a safe bet to say that anything goes. In fact, based on the last six years, it’s best not to assume anything other than: it’s going to be one hell of a ride…and we welcome THE VINES back to the BIG DAY OUT this summer. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

INFUSION is one of Australia’s most loved electronica artists, well known for their rollicking live shows and a resume of remixes as long as your arm. They return to rock the house at the BIG DAY OUT in 2009 after starring at Coachella, Roskilde and Glastonbury festivals. Following on from their classic Phrases and Numbers (2002) and Six Feet Above Yesterday (2004) the band will release their third album in 2009 and they’ve given us a taste of what’s to come with the saucy electro track “Dogtown”. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

Scorching guitar work, killer name and an electrifying stage presence has made Melbourne’s CHILDREN COLLLIDE the hottest trio to break through the indie scene in a long time. With their cracker debut LP The Long Now, CHILDREN COLLIDE have created an album that is a captivating introduction to the band’s explosive, high-voltage grunge-alicous pop. After wowing crowds during their hometown BDO show in 08, they join the big wheel circus for the first time. Come meet Johnny, Ryan and Heath at the BIG DAY OUT summer series, we know you’re gonna love them. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

Dance music guru PEE WEE FERRIS returns to the BIG DAY OUT in 2009. One of Australia’s most influential DJs and producers, PEE WEE FERRIS is a trailblazer of the dance music movement world wide. He’s had residencies in Australia and around the world featuring guests like Paul Oakenfold and Paul van Dyk, played alongside Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk and The Prodigy, received ARIA nominations and ARIA Gold Records and has a swag of composition and remix credits to his name. He takes his rightful place behind the decks at the BDO and will hammer out one huge party set for fans this summer! (ALL SHOWS)

Bridging the gap between introspective art rock and shimmering melodic pop, SPARKADIA’s debut album Postcards is one of the albums of the year. The Sydney four-piece have been hitting it big time in Europe with their accomplished pop hooks and bittersweet lyrics. SPARKADIA return this summer to deliver their most majestic sing along anthems like “Too Much to Do” and “Jealousy” at the BIG DAY OUT. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

THE GETAWAY PLAN have graduated top of the class from their teenage punk rock beginnings in Melbourne and have busted their way into the rock scene in a big way! With sold out tours and stacks of radio and television airplay, these rock minstrels are on the up. And finally fans can enjoy their music in the comfort and safety of their own homes with the release of their debut LP Other Voices, Other Rooms, which punches out powerful, melodic, rock hits like Where the City Meets the Sea and Shadows. It’s time to get away with the GET AWAY PLAN at the BIG DAY OUT! (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

Melbourne based LITTLE RED are sharp dressers, and they smile a lot. Their music is pretty good too - word on the street is that they’re going to be in command of a comprehensive 60s rock’n’roll revival at BIG DAY OUT. Their debut album Listen to Little Red is full of irresistibly danceable hooks, timeless melodies and charming harmonies. Don’t miss LITTLE RED as they serve up a refreshing set of sweet summer sounds at the BIG DAY OUT in 2009. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

Mammal is f**king excellent to watch; there’s no denying it. - Drum Media. And it IS as simple as that really. MAMMAL’s first LP was a revolutionary live album melding prog, punk and raw rock. With their prophetic powerhouse vocalist Ezekiel Ox and more wild riffage from Pete Williamson than you can poke a stick at, these guys released their first studio album this year when they recorded with Eric Sarafin (Ben Harper, Pharcyde). Raging against the record industry machine, MAMMAL released the resulting record The Majority independently, and are set to make one hell of a big ass noise for fans at the BIG DAY OUT. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

The genius of Sydney’s own MERCY ARMS is slowly dawning on music fans in Australia and abroad. In 2008 they’ve continued to spin their melodic web around our psyche’s with release their self titled debut - an inspired album drenched in luscious production from iconic Australian producer Tony Cohen. MERCY ARMS have also been sharing their atmospheric rock with audiences worldwide, and locally have ridden along in the tour bus with the likes of The Pixies, The Strokes, Cut Copy, The Horrors and The Editors. This band is sure to be round longer than your haircut, so don’t miss them at the BIG DAY OUT. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

AJAX has been working the decks for over 15 years. He started out pretty much the same way as most DJs by spinning at house parties, private events and dances – he was a hit, and made friends fast. Not content with the same old things, he quickly moved into the club and radio mix show scene and now his mantle is littered with many a DJ award. AJAX’s frenzied live shows serve up an energetic fist pumping, head nodding, body moving style, breaking out with scratching, beat juggling and trick mixing. Get ready for a BIG DAY OUT dance-floor experience you won't forget any time soon! (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

ANDEE FROST’s musical soul was set on fire at an early age by the glimmering sounds from the decks at the school disco. He took to DJing and his obsession with dance music grew and he eventually gained the status of “legend” at Melbourne club Honky Tonks. Throwing down some of the kookiest licks in town, ANDEE FROST has played with the likes of Justice, 2 Many DJs, and the Klaxons, and his Dr Seuss, disco inspired set is not to be missed at the BIG DAY OUT! (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

Cathartic, intense and thunderous, THE DRONES’ music does not fit easily into conventional rock music categories. While their material is often based on rock sounds and song structures, Gareth Liddiard and band mates are driven by a need to push boundaries venturing into the noisy, atonal, blues-based music that the likes of Tom Waits brought to a wider audience. Their fourth long player Havilah was released in September, and is again brimming with the innovation and artistic integrity that has made THE DRONES one of Australian rock's most critically acclaimed acts both here and overseas. Come witness THE DRONES when they deliver both new material and bring new light to their older songs at the BIG DAY OUT. (EAST COAST ONLY)

New additions to Big Day Out 09: SERJ TANKIAN, DROPKICK MURPHYS, BLACK KIDS, HOT CHIP, LUPE FIASCO, HOLY GHOST!, Z*TRIP, DIED PRETTY, THE VINES, INFUSION, CHILDREN COLLIDE, PEE WEE FERRIS, SPARKADIA, THE GETAWAY PLAN, LITTLE RED, MAMMAL, MERCY ARMS, AJAX, ANDEE FROST, THE DRONES.

These acts join the already announced: NEIL YOUNG, ARCTIC MONKEYS, THE LIVING END, THE PRODIGY, SNEAKY SOUND SYSTEM, MY MORNING JACKET, PENDULUM, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, TV ON THE RADIO, SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO, THE TING TINGS, TIKI TAANE, CUT COPY, COG, YOUTH GROUP, THE GRATES, BIRDS OF TOKYO, TZU and EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING.

Stay tuned for more local additions in your city!
