Well? Is it?
I'd say I can see reasoning if it IS the ONLY means of getting it as a fan, for appreciation.

From the sites you go on Narcissus, I don't think the legal issues involve copyright.

Is stealing ever justified?

I think it is justified as the music i enjoy is impossible to find in Adelaide and im sure it wouldn't be easy anywhere else in aus. i wouldn't even know of its existence if i couldn't download it off the net and it now dominates my life as my main hobby. i found a single album in a shop here by chance once and it was $40 and i still bought it at that price anyway because i already downloaded it and loved it. some people may consider downloading music etc 'stealing' but that doesn't add up if i am the one paying over twice as much as i should for a single CD whereas if i download something i can enjoy someones work free from ridiculous retail markup and if i see fit i can seek a way of buying it online or donating directly to the artist. even if i do download something without paying anything the artist doesn't loose any money, they just don't gain anything from me which they wouldn't anyway because i wouldn't even know they existed. im sure they would prefer me enjoying it for free than not enjoying it at all, i certainly would. i consider the 'il charge as much as i possibly can' attitude that all retailers in Adelaide seem to have as stealing from me and everyone else because unlike piracy i lose more without any more gain whatsoever. they don't leave you with many options, hopefully it mite finally click sometime that if they charge a fair price more people will buy CD's. it really is that simple.

that ended up much longer than i was expecting <_>
it is also my first post! hi everybody! :peace:

Other than if you're unable to buy whatever it is where you live (as in Zan's case), I don't think you can really JUSTIFY it. I do, however, think you can compensate, whether it be buying paraphernalia or going to shows.

even if you are unable to buy it in shops. what about itunes or similar?

if you purchase music through itunes or similar its still a medium where someone who had nothing to do with the production of the music is reaping profits off it, except without actually getting a hard physical copy. how is the person hosting the legal site different from the person hosting the illegal site, the legal site gets profits...

also i don't know about anyone else but i like to listen to an album before i buy it anyway as i wouldn't be comfortable paying for an album by an artist i haven't heard before as i mite not like it but if i do like it i may end up buying it at some point in time which seems like a benefit for the artist as i would otherwise just ignore it to be on the safe side.

the only problem i have with seeing artists live is that they visit my city very infrequently.

many artists that i listen to also release their work for free on the net as well as a hard copy for sale. just because i have the free soft copy doesn't mean im not going to buy the hard copy later. the artists that do this are always the smaller ones who wouldn't have too many sales. its funny that the rich and famous people and CEO's of massive commercial labels are the ones that complain about piracy when they are the ones that would use the extra profits from worldwide domination of the market to buy some fancy new cars.

there is definitely a 'robin hood' element that isn't talked about in the news because finally people have found a way to give an advantage to the large number of less fortunate and take fraction of undeserved profits away from a few super rich dipsticks.

I'm of a similar mind to Zan - I like to hear before I buy, and my local CD shops tend not to stock what I like. Or the local shops charge exorbitant prices. And if I like, I buy - usually direct from the label or artist...one of the benefits of having one of them fancy internets is that you have the whole world at your fingertips - sometimes you need to do a bit of research to find what you're after. It's also surprisingly good value - I regularly pay about $18-20AU per CD (including postage) from EU/UK artists & labels.

Except the stuff I don't like (which I delete), the only music I don't pay for is netlabel, although I've yet to find a netlabel artist I enjoy as much as one who has an expectation of payment...if anyone has, let me know!

And don't forget Trent Reznor - the man offered the latest NIN album for free high quality download. Completely free. If people are interested in the future of music distribution & sales on a large rscale, keep an eye on that man...
