Accept us or leave, says Jewish settler PALESTINIANS must accept that the West Bank is part of Israel and become loyal Israeli citizens - without voting rights - or leave, a spokesman for Israeli settler communities will tell a public meeting tomorrow. Director of the Shomron Liaison Office, David Ha'ivri, says only Jews have a right to the West Bank and, having won by conquest in 1967 what was already theirs, must keep it. ''Israel needs to annex and control all the area in its possession today. People who live in that area need to be loyal to the state of Israel,'' Mr Ha'ivri told The Age yesterday. The Shomron is a group of 33 Jewish towns in the West Bank, most run by fundamentalist settlers, and Mr Ha'ivri has come to Melbourne to seek support in the face of international pressure to close the settlements as illegal. However, Jewish community leaders here said Mr Ha'ivri would find little support. Jewish Community Council of Victoria president, John Searle, said a one-state solution was not a view most in the Melbourne Jewish community would adopt, provided the Palestinians accepted a Jewish state with secure borders. Rabbi Fred Morgan, of Temple Beth Israel, said most Melbourne Jews wanted a just solution for both peoples seeking a homeland, which required a two-state solution. Mr Ha'ivri, who will speak at the Beth Weizmann Community Centre tomorrow evening, said only the Jewish people had sovereignty in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank). ''We were expelled by the Romans in 70AD and for 2000 years in exile we never gave up claim to the land. In that time, no other sovereign state was set up there - it was controlled by a foreign country, whether Romans, Ottomans, British or Jordanians,'' he said. ''Our claim to the land is a religious claim.'' http://www.theage.com.au/national/accept-us-or-leave-says-jewish-settler-20091023-hdfw.html |

Don't care, mate. I don't care if some sky fairy somehow wrote down in some old book that that land just happened to be yours. I really don't. All I'm seeing now is you and your religious friends oppressing innocent people and disrupting their daily lives with all sorts of fuckery. So really, I don't care. |

All other groups besides whom? EDIT: That question was obviously a trap. I've been looking for something, but this is as close as I can find: Muslim 66.6% (predominantly Sunni), Jewish 26%, Christian and other 7.4%, if East Jerusalem is included. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_Palestinian_territories#Religions It doesn't even offer much we can use. In short, most Palestinians may be Muslims, but the fact is that among those being oppressed by the Israeli regime are Atheists, Buddhists, Christians, and yes, even Jews. Basically anyone who opposed the state, or belongs to the wrong ethnic group/religion. The Israeli in the above article is only talking about a single aspect of the conflict. There is A LOT more to it than religion. It's not a religious battle, alas, once again, religion is a scapegoat. |

I've never bought the whole 'religion is a scapegoat' schtick. Whether or not Religion X says that it is right to commit Act Y, it doesn't matter - the fact remains that there are people out there using religion to justify whatever nutty things they're doing. If some mass murder was perpetrated by somebody who said that violent videogames made him think it was okay to do it (long shot, I know) you can roll your eyes at what a moron this guy was to think it was okay, where were his parents etc, but that doesn't make the people he killed any less dead, and they're dead in the first place because of that negative message, misinterpreted or misconstrued or whatever. And don't get me wrong, I know that there are plenty of things that religions do teach which are nice and positive fluffy bunny type things, but when so many bad things are done in the name of religion it makes the rest pale in comparison. |

and i agree, its not a religious battle. ppl make it seem like this huge muslim jew thing, but if you look into it its just bullshit, and it ends up with this huge thing between jews n muslims and even muslims and muslims. |
