Marriage licence denied US mixed-race pair AN interracial couple in Louisiana have been denied a marriage licence by an official who considers their union morally wrong, according to local media. "I'm not a racist,'' Keith Bardwell, a justice of the peace in rural Tangipahoa Parish, told the Hammond Star. "I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house. My main concern is for the children.'' Mr Bardwell told the paper that he believes interracial marriages do not last and that the children of such unions are not accepted by either the black or white community. "I don't do interracial marriages because I don't want to put children in a situation they didn't bring on themselves,'' Mr Bardwell told the paper. "In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer.'' Beth Humphrey, who is white, and Terence McKay, who is black, were eventually married by a justice of the peace in a neighbouring town. Ms Humphrey told the Star that Bardwell's wife asked her if this was an interracial marriage when she called to make arrangements and told her to contact another justice of the peace as her husband would not sign the marriage license. "I simply can't believe he can do that. That's blatant discrimination,'' Ms Humphrey said. The couple is considering filing a discrimination complaint and the American Civil Liberties Union was among several outraged groups calling for swift action. Mr Bardwell, who said the state attorney general had warned him years ago that he would eventually get into trouble for refusing to perform interracial marriages, was undeterred. "I stand by my decision and it is my right not to marry an interracial couple,'' Bardwell told WAFB television. "It's wrong.'' He could not immediately be reached for comment. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,26221961-23109,00.html ..I don't even know where to start here.

Remember: according to Americans we're 30 years behind them. They're so enlightened. |

Aren't they just! And silly me for thinking that communities are about more than being black or white! Edited by gingerwitch28, Oct 17 2009, 02:54 AM.

Okay, you have to remember that this took place in Louisiana. It's in the South and it's a red state (conservative) right next to Texas. Still, it's disappointing to hear about things like this. |

You guys are ridiculous with your American bashing and stereotyping. Just cause there are some crazy people out of 300 million. And who said that we are 30 years ahead of "you"? On the topic of the subject I have a question. What does marriage have to do with children? |

Well I suppose the guy assumed that since they were white/black their children would then be mixed race and would be accepted by neither 'community'. My comment about communities is that I didn't realise communities were based on ethnicity, because the whole point of a community is that it involves numerous people of all sorts of backgrounds that nonetheless have a few similar attributes. In this case, humanity. And on the topic of American-bashing, the 30 years comment was in regards to the Hey Hey Blackface controversy. Hey Hey It's Saturday was a popular, silly sort of show back in the 80s and 90s, and this year they had 2 reunion specials - in one of which a team of doctors who had once performed a skit as the Jackson Five back in the 80s redid it as fully-fledged doctors. The controversy was that back then they did it in blackface, and this time they did it in blackface as well, only Harry Connick Jr was a guest judge and was really offended by it. There's a thread about it in this same forum. When the Australian media reported on the story they reported on the backlash from the US and the UK, in which people from other countries made several disparaging comments about our race-relations issues (pot calling the kettle black in a big way ) What Freki was referencing was when some American person said that clearly we were 30 years behind the rest of the world for not understanding that it was racist. Hence that's ridiculous when you've got people like this guy in your country.

You Americans are so whiny and uptight. ![]() Please don't start accusing me of being ridiculous and America bashing based on a facetious remark that you require clarification on. Yes, it was in response to a fox news "discussion" where they stated that we were thirty years behind the US. Edited by Freki, Oct 18 2009, 02:44 AM.

My friend agrees with this. Three problems I have with this situation: a) She calls herself a libertarian b) She's ethnically Korean. c) Up until now I thought she was one of the most amazing and accepting people alive. Edited by gingerwitch28, Oct 22 2009, 10:04 AM.

The views of fox news do not match up with the view of most of America.
Is that even an argument? I don't waste my time with fox news and their outdated racist and ethnocentrist views, so I wouldn't have known that they had stated something so ridiculous. However then you change "according to fox news" (which doesn't include me) to "according to americans" which does in fact include me as well as the majority of Americans who would reject such an outrageous claim. That is what was uncalled for, and that is what I was criticizing. |
