Sandilands survives second scandal

Kyle Sandilands has kept his job as a radio host on the Kyle and Jackie O Show after a crisis meeting with Austereo executives today.

The shock jock will be ordered to attend external counselling and forfeit four weeks of pay before he is allowed back on air, according to a statement from the network.

"2Day FM advises that Kyle Sandilands will remain suspended without pay until October 7 2009," Austereo chairman Peter Harvie said.

"The period of the suspension will therefore be four weeks, of which one week has already been served.

"The pay penalty will be directed by 2Day FM to community charitable causes."

Sandilands reportedly attended a meeting with Mr Harvie and other Austereo executives at a Sydney hotel today.

The news comes as Sandilands's rival breakfast radio hosts Todd McKenney and Sonia Kruger were axed from their program today by Mix 106.5 parent company Australian Radio network.

The Dancing With the Stars hosts had been on air for two years.

Sandilands was broadcasting from Los Angeles last week when he said actress Magda Szubanski could become skinny if she was in a concentration camp.

Radio station owner Austereo suspended Sandilands over the comments on September 9.

Sandilands and co-host Jackie O also went off air for two weeks in August after a 14-year-old was strapped to a lie detector and quizzed about her sexual history on their show.

The recent scandals seem to have hurt the breakfast show, with the latest ratings figures released on Tuesday showing a drop in listeners.

The Nielsen survey shows that the audience dropped 2.2 percentage points from a 12 percent share to 9.8 percent in the period from June 28 until September 5.
Sandilands' jibe about Szubanski did not take place within the ratings period, and the former Australian Idol judge claimed to be unaware of the controversy it caused.

"What do you mean?" he said to a reporter at the airport.

"Not that I'm aware of, darl."

I give him two weeks before he places his foot square in his mouth, again.

I'm not sure who I dislike more - Sandilands or the people who actually listen to the moron.

Sandilands back in favour with shock jock fans

KYLE Sandilands and Jackie O have lifted their audience numbers for their 2DAYFM Sydney breakfast radio show, while new talent has boosted Mix 106.5.

Sandilands and O's show recorded the biggest gains in the breakfast slot over the last few months, according to the latest Nielsen radio ratings survey.

The show lifted 1.2 percentage points, or about 17,000 listeners, to have an 11 per cent share (111,000 average listeners) in the period from August 2 until October 24.

The figures do not include a two week non-ratings period in mid-September.

It's good news for Sandilands and O, who suffered a big ratings drop in the previous survey, losing about 35,000 listeners.

It's also a show of support for Sandilands, who returned to the air on October 8 after he was suspended following a couple of on-air stunts gone wrong.

Meanwhile, youngsters Mike E and Carmela who replaced battling Sonia Kruger and Todd McKenney at rival Mix 106.5FM managed to grow the breakfast program's figures by 0.8 of a percentage point to enjoy a 4.1 per cent share.

Nova 969's Merrick and Rosso and Kate Ritchie also had gains, while Triple J, WSFM and Triple M slipped.

In the AM breakfast market, radio king Alan Jones strengthened his lead, with his show growing .1 of a percentage point to a 16.6 per cent share.

Jones commands an average audience of about 168,000 people.

Across all timeslots, ABC702 had the biggest growth in the last survey, followed by 2DAYFM.

ABC702 (10.5 per cent share) is the second most listened-to station, behind leader 2GB (13.7 per cent share).
