I hadn't thought about anything of how Arabs are portrayed by Hollywood until I saw this doco. But it raises a lot of good points.
If I find the whole thing online I'll post it. I urge you watch it.

firstly im sorry but this is an attempt at trying to look demonised where it doesnt exist.

firstly about back to the future and libyians. although its an islamic state, they are africans not arabs. ( it is on the african continent).

secondly alladdin- wtf? who else is expected to be the oppents of an arabian in ARABIA

thirdly, indy!! if my memory serves correctly, they were in eygpt and he pwn alot of nazis too.

what this film doesnt mention, is that hollywood portrays most of its villians the same way.

IE the blues brothers - stupid nazis
potc - stupid english guards
home alone - stupid american thieves

ETC

Egypt is in Africa, yet a third of the arab population is in Egypt...

Also, I'm sorry but arabs have been demonised, if you don't see it then there has to be something wrong with you. They use arabic words that are perfectly innocent for bad things, how often do you hear 'madrassa' being used as a word for a terrorist training camp, Jihad for terrorism, mesjid for terrorist meeting place, where they actually mean school, strive and mosque respectively...

I don't have much time to reply.
I'd just like to say geography =/= race.

I'm on the Australian continent, but that doesn't make me Aborigine. Moot point.
Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Sudan and, yes, Libya are all known to have a large Arab community.

so what the film says libyians NOT arabs therefore it is a weak point at the very best

How were Libyans relevent to the film outside of this?
Did they necessarily have to be Libyan?

Considering the nation's official name is "Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya", the language is Arabic, the population as a rule's overwhelming majority are of Arab decent, the country is a part of the Arab league, and while geographically north African nations I mentioned above [while continentally Africa] are part of the Middle East regionally...I think it's pretty safe to say.

On the off chance said Libyans were not supposed to be Arab, is it still not vilification againsts the Libyan community globally?

you have to understand sayf that the film wasnt made this year, so perhaps the libyians were used because they were revelvant at the time.

it fits with the story. where else would the dr get plutomium if not from some evil group. if theyd picked the IRA ( irish terrorists) someone would say " you cant vilify the irish like that!"

TL;DR the picked a nation that had terrorist activities around the time so the americans would find it it easier to understand. and dont worry, im sure some of them thought liyba was near germany.

I'm aware that the film wasn't made this year, but I'd like to know what was so topical about Libya at the time. [PS; you've used an argument that proves vilification through movies]

Why vilify anyone?

Does this make it right?

I always thought that the Libyans in Back to the Future were poking fun at the fact that everyone was so damn concerned about the USSR, so why not pick another country to treat as a 'threat'?
