A Godless life seems sweeter

Here's a question to whoever feels like answering it: Should the "non believer" respect religion? If so, why? I'm hesitant in saying anything, because a lot of the time religion doesn't seem to respect me at all, or give a damn infact. However, I'm sure that I"ll be bombarded soon enough by about three pages of the wonders of religion. A message to that: If you can't cut it down to fit on my screen, I won't read it. |

To answer your question with another question - should those who subscribe to a religion repect secularism/those of another religion? Bunny, dare I say the question is not a religious one, but a social one. I'm hesitant in saying anything, because a lot of the time religion doesn't seem to respect me at all, or give a damn infact. Do you mean to say religion itself or religious people? If religion itself, how, where and when?

I respect religious people (barring other factors) as long as they aren't fundamentalists. I have no respect for religion itself however. Since I regard it as being the backbone of conservatism (and here I mean as in culture, accepted social standards, and hierarchial structures [most often taking the form of patriarchy to form a double affront] and so on rather than as a philosophy advocating limited government) it is too much for my inner protestor to support. EDIT: As for respecting non-fanatical religious people - Why not? I see it mostly as being a somewhat irritating quirk with the individual. Plus, I do like discussing religious topics. lets see 1. most religions dont want to just leave unbelievers alone, the try to convert them and some promise nasty punishments if they dont. MORMONS AT 8AM SATURDAY. 2. religions want society as defined in their holy book. hence the fuss over creation UNscience and homosexuality (god forbid that people love who they want). also abortion. you may not like it. but thats no reason to kill doctors. 3. most children of religious familys are indentified by that religion, and never taught much different. do you think that if the children could think/speak for themselves, theyd want no choice in partner? 4.westboro bapist church ( i cover homosexuality above but these imbeciles are a whole other kettle of fish). 5. the vatican city. arent christians supposed to use the tithe to help others, not build a damn city 6. hinderance of science. eg george bush vetoing public research funding for stem cells. 7. the fact that it seems to segragate people instead of bringing them together 8. well... this. The only person who's topics have been about religion, and not social attitudes that somehow are offshots of some religions some of the time is StupidStuff. I'll address that post when I get home from work.
