Racism 'does exist in Australia' RACISM does exist in Australia but that doesn't mean the whole society is racist, says Race Discrimination Commissioner Tom Calma. Mr Calma said Australia could not allow a repeat of what happened in the 1990s when racial comments by politician Pauline Hanson inflamed attitudes across Asia. He said attacks on Indian students in Australia had the potential to hurt the student markets as well as other trade. "We need to recognise that racism does exist in Australia. It doesn't mean the whole society is racist but it does exist with individual's actions and small group actions," he told Channel 10. "It's important that we all accept that, understand and start to develop the frameworks to address it into the future and not be reactive but be pro-active. "That is really what I think we are lacking at this stage." Education ministers meeting in Hobart last week decided to set up a taskforce to protect the interests of overseas students following recent attacks in Sydney and Melbourne on Indian students. That led to mass protests and threats to the highly lucrative international student market. Mr Calma said the police needed to work with the community to ensure measures were implemented to prevent this escalating. He said it would affect international markets and the student industry. "Students are coming here not only because we offer a quality education but it is a different lifestyle," he said. "Those engagements as students will develop into good business relations and other relationships into the future." Mr Calma said since the Indian student market began developing in the mid-1990s, Bollywood had started to produce films in Australia and there had been an expanded trade relationship. "We need to be able to understand that and work to protect it," he said. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,25633836-29277,00.html |

We had this discussion in Intr. We decided that, in comparison to many other countries, Australia has a marvellous amount of, as I put it, "Folksy" racism; deeply ingrained social stereotypes that are simply "there", but don't really reflect serious political views. It very rarely escalates into something like this, but nonetheless.... Something to mull over, I suppose. |

Everywhere has Racism, all humans are inheritently racist. It's just some of us show it more than others, and what you're racist about changes over time and actions of other peoples. Like in the US, there was little anti-Arab racism before 9/11, now there is a lot of it. Both covertly and overtly. And that racism has really been brought on by the actions of a few individuals. But that's how racism works. The group that hates usually gets stirred up by the hated groups villiage assclown, so the haters assume everyone is like the assclown. I do have to say though, the US has made great strides when it comes to racism. 150 years ago blacks were owned as property in this country and today we have one as president. |

While it may have increased sharply, it was certainly around. ![]() There's a doco called Reel Bad Arabs. I'm yet to see the whole thing, but here is the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko_N4BcaIPY It's about how Hollywood has villified Arabs for decades. Be it correct or incorrect in content... |

I don't recall many Muslim villians before 9/11. There was Jafar in Aladdin but that takes place in Arabia and is based off of Arabian folk lore, and normally I tend to exlcude things like Aladdin and Arabian Nights because when a story is based in a region it only makes sense that most characters will be those ethnicities. Before 9/11 most Muslims were depicted as goofy. You have the fat guy in the Mummy, the guy in one of the Indiana Jones movies and a few others. Hollywood does have a tendency to demonize what ever group the US is at odds with. Throughout most its history Hollywood mad Russians out to be the enemy. Everything from The Last Day on Earth to Rocky made Russians or Communist to be the bad guys. before that it was Germans and Japanese, and Hollywood still loves the Nazi imagry to make a bad guy. Now it's the Muslims turn at being depicted as evil. Wait 20 years and it will be a new group. |

@Redneck - it's true. Unfortunately, the ethnic group we are picking on at the moment happen to make up a LOT of the earth's population. Gotta love it. |
