I know people are tiring of this, but I'd just like to point something out to FMPBeats.
Now as far as saying that rap is more or equally as technical as metal instrumentally - please humour me and show me how this song's beat is more complicated than the use of intstruments in this song. (I like both of these songs btw.) |

like I said, it varies from song to song. But I am a (learning) producer, and although I don't do metal I think I can hear 'the trail of thought' that they went through to make the song. I'm pretty sure they started from the small melody in the begining and built arround that, and from experience I can tell you that while it does require skill and knowledge, when it easily flows from a simple 'starting point' melody it is quite easy to make. However for the beat in lupes song (which I have to say I don't like), it can take hours to find the right sample to get, and I personally find sampling harder than composition. However, there is a lot wrong with the beat lupe used, for a start the bass isn't powerfull enough, there are not enough switch ups, the kicks aren't hard enough, the drum pattern is quite boring, there is not enough going on etc. So yes, out of the two songs you posted it, musically metal is superior to rap. But If I showed you this could be (depending on opinion) a different story, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43y-a7diPao, now I don't like Vinnie Paz (the rapper) that much, but stoupe (the producer) is a genius. In some beats he uses over 100 tracks. I could also show you this http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6276006 and again it could be a different story. For the song you posted although the individual instruments were played at a very high level, the overall composition was very simple. But for the beats I have showed though individual tracks may be rather simple, the way they are used together is at a very high level. This is why imo it comes down to opinion. Also I would like to point out only one person makes a beat (except for rare cases). But thanks for actually making a decent point. Edited by FMPBeats, Jul 6 2009, 12:16 PM.
