IT begins innocently enough; that overdue history essay is momentarily flicked to one side, so you can check your Facebook messages. Two hours later you're scrolling through baby photos of someone you sat next to in grade four. The essay remains untouched, The Australian reports. Most university students with Facebook accounts have similar tales of online procrastination. They know all too well how easy it is to lose hours of precious study time to the allure of social networking sites. Now academic research has validated the nagging suspicions of many such students that Facebook is having a detrimental effect on their university results. Researchers from the US have found that students prone to accumulating friends, uploading photographs, chatting and "poking" others on Facebook may devote as little as one hour a week to their academic work. related coverage Reader's Comments: Facebook fixation harms student grades NEWS.com.au, Facebook used to recruit staff Courier Mail, 28 Feb 2009 Please don't leave, says Facebook Adelaide Now, 19 Feb 2009 Friends pay tribute to glacier victim NEWS.com.au, 9 Jan 2009 Learning web 2.0, or gen-Y speak The Australian, 20 Aug 2008 your say Really? people who spend more time on Facebook spend less time studying?? (Read More) Captain of Obvious "Our study shows people who spend more time on Facebook spend less time studying," said Aryn Karpinski, a researcher in the education department at Ohio State University. "Every generation has its distractions, but I think Facebook is a unique phenomenon." Ms Karpinski's study, conducted with a colleague at Ohio State University, questioned 219 US undergraduates and graduates about their study practices and general internet use, as well as their specific use of Facebook. They found that 68 per cent of students who used Facebook had a significantly lower grade-point average than those who did not use the site. But rather than addressing the issue by turning off their computers, some Australian university students have instead taken to setting up Facebook support groups to discuss how the site adversely affects their university marks. The Sydney University-based group called "I want to sue Facebook if I fail university" has almost 1000 members who credit the social networking forum as the primary cause for a spike in the number of people failing university. Rob Barnum, a 22-year-old student in his final year of an arts-commerce degree at the Australian National University, admits his grades have probably suffered because of his Facebook compulsion. "I'll be studying for exams and you are in front of your computer so you look up Facebook to see what's happening and then one thing just leads to another and you end up wasting a lot of time on it," he said. As has already been noted. You could replace "Facebook" in this thread's title with anything and it'd mean the same thing. |

Gee, I'd rather be back at highschool =/ But yeah, facebook isn't the only culprit when it comes to student procrastination. I'm doing everything but working on an assignment now, and I haven't looked at facebook in days. |

Facebook is boring, though doing other useless stuff online usually makes me procrastinate. Just so much studying, the idea brings me down a lot xD
