Super Spok to the rescue!
lately I have been feeling that the democratic system is not that democratic, for lack of a better explanation and that we as the voters are being short changed.

we can read manifestos and vote for the party that seems to fit with us, however of course some of the policies/ promises aren't followed through, and it seems they are just there to get voters, without actually having any cause/effect. beyond that, we appear to have very little say in what the government does, afterall, bills can be put through without us even knowing, and major decisions are made without that much input from the public. sure the premise makes sense, we cant be consulted on every little thing, but on major decisions there should be more opportunities to have your say. and even then polls can be distorted to fit what the government wants to happen.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yhN1IDLQjo)(clip from the comedy "yes primeminster" illustrating this)

I guess the whole point of this is the question "can we ever have true democracy?" or should we just accept that if we don't like what's been done, we can vote for the opposition and hope they get in and make a move in the right direction?

 :guh:
i hope i've explained it well enough

Politics is generally deception.
I too have a lot of issues with democracy for pretty much the same reasons. You vote in a party to represent the population, and then they generally speaking start making the decisions for you.

It's almost an illusive concept to make the general population assume they have the power.

Constitutional rights are pretty much a joke too.

an example http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7985339.stm

the individual has no say in what Europe does, while they curtail our freedom and slowly turn one of the freest parts of the world into a government state

But hasn't the world always technically been a government state if I'm interpretting you correctly?
I mean, when and where has democracy been what it advertises itself as?
Where have the people made the choices without question?
