Ramshackle Debacle

ram•shack•le [adjective]
loosely made or held together; rickety; shaky: a ramshackle house.

—Synonyms tumbledown, dilapidated, derelict, flimsy.

de•ba•cle [noun]
1.a general breakup or dispersion; sudden downfall or rout: The revolution ended in a debacle.
2.a complete collapse or failure.
3.a breaking up of ice in a river. Compare EMBACLE.
4.a violent rush of waters or ice.

—Synonyms 2. disaster, ruin, fiasco, catastrophe, calamity.

Background

Set in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian society, where science rules without morals to guide it. Hideous creatures made of both plant and animal, roam the streets; failed experiments let free from their master’s labs.

Humans still exist, some live fearful existences, others are scientists, some, however, have chosen to upgrade themselves using robotic parts. Infected with diseases, zombies and other undead are not uncommon.

The power of the soul is important in this world; ghosts exist, souls can be used to animate otherwise lifeless objects, in some cases many souls of those killed in experiments give rise to poltergeists.

Battle
Battles are common between rivalling creatures. Encounters in the city often lead to fights.

There are three stats that determine a creature’s battle prowess;

  • Intuition: How intelligent your character is, this stat allows your character to more easily escape battles, use tools and solve puzzles.
  • Defence: How good your character is at defending from attacks, the higher the defence the less injuries sustained from battle.
  • Attack : The higher the attack, the more chance your character stands at hitting through your enemy’s defence.

However, the whole battle isn’t won yet, just because you have higher stats!

There’s an element of chance involved, in the form of a dice roll. At the end of the post, after you’ve stated your character’s action, (and related stat) tick the “enable dice roll” box below your post, and post away! The character’s stat is now added to the number generated from the dice roll (10 sided die), to give how successful the action was!
Your character's attack is determined by it's Attack stat, defend from attacks using its Defence stat, and run from battles using its Intuition stat. After you have run from battle, you cannot attack the enemy, and the enemy cannot attack you until another battle is initiated.
After five successful hits, your character is defeated. It is your choice what happens to your character once defeated; are they just knocked out, badly wounded, or even dead?

Battle rules:

  • One battle action per post.

  • A battle must go in the order: Attack, Block, Trick, then back to attack again.

  • For clarity, state what turn it is (Attack) (block) (trick) in your post before dice roll, you must also name your character you are playing as in the post, and who you are attacking/interacting with.

  • To attack, your ATT stat is added to the dice roll.

  • To block an attack, the attack must be stated first, then the next person can defend against it using their DEF stat + dice roll. A blocked attack does nothing. However, if the defence is lower, it counts as a Hit. If attack and defence are equal, it counts as a block.

  • After the opponent blocked (successful or not), the player must use a trick. The trick uses INT + dice roll. If the trick is higher than the next attack then you have tricked your opponent. If you have an item, such as a sleeping potion or weapon you can use it on your enemy. If not, it does nothing.

  • To run from a battle, you use your trick round. If your INT + dice roll is higher than the NEXT attack, (not the previous defence) then you have successfully escaped.

  • After five successful Hits, you have been defeated

Battle Example:
Player 1

Vilemoth the terrible leaps out of the shadows, attacking Ratchetface with sharpened claws;
Attack: +5
You rolled a 5!

The power of Vilemoth’s attack is 10.
Player2

Ratchetface blocks the claws with his metal arms.
Defence: +3
You rolled a 9!

Ratchetface was lucky! His defence power is 11. In this case, Ratchetface successfully blocked Vilemoth’s attack. However, if he wasn’t so lucky and rolled a 5 like Vilemoth, he wouldn’t have been able to block the attack.

Character Types
There are three main beings in this world, each with their own strengths and weaknesses:

Human: Humans and humanoids, or things that once were human.
  • Def +1
  • Int +3

Beast: Creatures that either are or were animals, or are mostly animal.
  • Int +1
  • Att +3

Plant: Things that might have once been that pot plant you under-watered, then threw out, has come back with a vengeance.
  • Att +1
  • Def +3

Sub-Types

There are three sub-types, which also have strengths and weaknesses:

Robot: Things with robotic parts. Cyborgs, mechas, you go here.
  • Int +2
  • Def +2

Spirit: Things that were once living, their bodies gone, their soul lives on inside objects, animated scarecrows, ghosts and voodoo dolls!
  • Int +2
  • Att+2

Undead: Zombies, you know the drill, bodies live on, however their souls have left.
  • Def +2
  • Att +2

Character-specific:

To even out the odds, and to make each character that bit more unique, you have 3 bonus points to distribute in your character's stats any way you like.

Characters

Your character will have a category and a sub-category. It will gain the stat bonuses from each category; however, you also have 3 bonus points to place into whichever stats you like, in any combination.

For your character, we need:

Code:

[B][u]Name here[/u][/b]

[b]Types:[/b] Type1, Type2

[b]Appearance:[/b] What your character looks like.

[b]Background:[/b] Write a little background info for your character, personality, where they came from, can be as crazy as you like!

[b]Stats:[/b]

[list]
[*][u]Intuition:[/u] number based on your types, and “bonus points”
[*][u]Defence:[/u] number based on your types, and “bonus points”
[*][u]Attack:[/u] number based on your types, and “bonus points”

Copy and paste the code into the Ramshackle character thread, and fill it in!
Once we’ve had enough people sign up, I’ll start the RP. Any Questions, ask them here. Characters can still be entered after the RP has started!

Seems like a good RP. I'm-a-in.

A few questions, though:

Do we have to choose a subtype? And can we choose simply a subtype if it makes sense, such as just a robot?

And are there any ways to increase stats?

I'll just roll this once for the future beginning of the RP.

I'm going to say yes, you have to have a type and a subtype, otherwise it'd put your character at an unfair disadvantage. I had a think about this, but with the system I have in place has all been worked out with each type and subtype having it's own advantages and disadvantages, with an element of variation with the bonus points. It's also a chance to play as a creature you might not have thought of before, and come up with wacky back-stories for (eg, robotic plant?).

I'm thinking that, for now, the stats will stay as they are. However, I'm thinking of ways to "tweek" the stats slightly.

Another thing that's variable is the dice rolls. Currently it's set to ten sides, but I can make it more or less depending on how much stats actually effect battles (eg, I want it to be fair and have stats give an advantage, though still leave enough chance that a weaker enemy could defeat a stronger one).

One current problem with the dice code: you can edit the roll by editing your post. Maybe I shouldn't have told you, but you'd all figure it out anyhow. However, if I catch anyone cheating I'll be angry. There will be a fix soon on the code which disables the editing of it!

This RP is both for fun, and an experiment in a way. I might start a practise thread, so people can get used to the battle system.

But what if I WANT my character to have a disadvantage, as in, have a lonely scientist of almost having hit insanity, who is NOT going to have fighting prowess? I guess it is a pretty generic scientist character, but still...

On the other hand, when you say active characters, if one dies, I can replace it, correct?

Yeah, alright, I see where you're coming from. The point of this RP though was to play as crazy creatures. Thinking about it, I'm gonna say OK to "just one category" characters, however it's kinda against my original idea somewhat.

Active characters are ones that you are currently "playing" with. You can create as many characters as you want, but not have them all active at the same time.
And yes, if one dies, you can either resurrect them somehow (a plausible way would be nice) or you could replace them.
