Welcome one and all to "Jeff is a very slow learner" as I venture into a blind Let's Play that's NOT made by Enix!

(I acknowledge the caps are larger than normal. I also acknowledge I do not care.)

Baldur's Gate is a critically-acclaimed Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game released in 1998, around the same time as Blizzard's hit Diablo. Together, they are held as responsible for the revitalization of CRPGs.

I've played the game inasmuch as I'm now familiar with the absolute basics of the game engine, but not really the plot or, honestly, even the combat mechanics. So, it's all new from here on out. But first, to field some basic questions so you guys know where I stand on this undertaking:

Q: Have you ever played 2nd ed. DnD?
A: No, but I once made a 3.5 and a 4th ed character each in campaigns that never went anywhere!

Q: Isn't this game insanely long?
A: I've heard something to that effect, but at least it'd balance out by previous excursions into the genre.

Q: Do you actually know ANYTHING about DnD's world, mythos, backstory, setting, plot, cast, etc, etc, etc?
A: Not at all! I love a challenge, don't you?

And with that, let's begin with making our character, shall we?

Here's our chargen screen. We need a gender first, which even the game admits is largely aesthetic. Cucumbers or melons? Makes no difference to me.

Next is our race, or species. Certain races get different advantages and drawbacks, including what class they can use. The races are: Human, Elves, Halfling, Half-elves, Gnome, and Dwarves.

Then it's time to pick our class. This will determine what we do best and our selection will be changed a little due to race influences. Our classes to pick from are: Fighter, Ranger, Paladin, Cleric, Druid, Mage, Thief and Bard. To tell if a race can be a specific class would require a chart that would be rather cumbersome. If you want to double-check if your combination can work, ask, and I'll let you know.

Next up is alignment. This is pretty self-explanatory, but I'll go over it just in case. Alignment is broken up into two parts. The first part is Lawful, Neutral and Chaotic while the second half is comprised of Good, Neutral and Evil. Paladins must be Lawful Good and Thieves cannot be Lawful anything, etc, etc, etc. Just pick a combination that makes sense and I won't have to beat you into a coma for asking me to play a Chaotic-Neutral Halfling Paladin, okay?

I'll handle abilities based on what the winner of the vote will be, as you can ask the game to reroll your them until you're satisfied with the result.

Skills are what we're good at. We start with a fairly small amount of points to put into these (max is four, I believe) so I'll take care of these based on what you tell me to do.

Appearance - This is just adjusting colors for hair, skin and outfit. If you have a color theme for me to go with, just say so. I can change this at any time.

And we'll need a name. It can be whatever, I'm pretty open to suggestions here. Furthermore, as this IS a Bioware RPG, I'm going to have a lot of options in dialog, so jot up maybe a short bio about who I'm going to be playing. Be creative! Give me ideas of what this character would behave like, okay? This is a Let-US play, after all.

And that should do it! Okay guys, get to voting and once enough suggestions have arrived, we'll dive into Let's Play Baldur's Gate!

Let's go with a half-elf cleric of Lathander. That way we can get healing, buffs and access to some strong weapons. Hm....I'll go with female, with orange and green for our colors.

As for Bio, go for an awesome, happy adventurer who is in it for sense of wonder.

First off, don't assume there is "DnD world" lore, mythos, backstory, plot, etc. There are at least 6 published settings (Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Eberon, Darksun, Planescape and Spelljammer) all of whom are unique in their own way and have their own lore, mythos, backstory etc (Not even counting the hundreds of homebrew settings, such as mine or Kesler's). The 'generic' setting laid out in the core books is Greyhawk, but the most famous, popularized by the works of such writers as R.A. Salvador, Ed Greenwood, and Richard Baker, is probably Forgotten Realms, the home of characters such as Drizzt Do'Urden, Elminster, and Mystra. Baldur's Gate takes place in FR.

Oh, and don't worry about the lack of FR knowledge. I'll make expositions and quips as you go.

Play a human cleric of Lathander who wears purple and is a righteous ass.

You forgot Ravenloft there, Andrew, or WFRP: The DnD Setting. Ravenloft on Wikipedia.

But, yeah. I suggest a cleric. Gender and race, I don't care. Hm....Let's go for Lathander.

This is just going to be a little mini-update so that when the game proper begins, I don't need to butt heads with Zetaboard's image limit glitch. Furthermore: the character generation poll is over and, just for future reference, these updates may be a bit slower than my usual. Just the nature of the beast.

First, here is my character sheet as of creation:

Dan had suggested a specific pic for the portrait but I couldn't figure out how to get it to cooperate with me, so here it is, in-full for your convenience:

Not much of a resemblance, honestly, but whatever.

Now for some hot exposition action!

Huh! So, next time in our full-life consequences-length update, we delve into the actual game with our little lady, Blackleaf! See you there!

Today, on Let's Play Baldur's Gate...

...

Yeah.

Baldur's Gate has decided it doesn't want to be played, nor let me take caps of it for fear of freezing. I really don't know or understand what caused this sudden hatred towards me but I assure you - this is not the end! Not by a long shot!

I'm going to venture into some possible fixes and, failing that, turn the project over to the only other man I could trust with this undertaking - Dan. Blackleaf and her enthusiasm for life and adventure MUST GO ON!!!
