Since Tish has asked me a few questions about veganism, I thought I would start a thread. If you have any questions, just ask.

You dont have a whole foods or a Krogers where you live? All the different grocers here have vegan/vegetarian sections. Here are a few websites for you. Since Tish is having issues finding vegan products in her area, here are a few websites to help you out.

www.veganessentials.com

www.konakavafarm.com (Organic Vegan products)

www.worldpantry.com

www.newmansown.com/

Thank you for sharing Red. I'm going to check those out. We have a Winn Dixie and they have an organic/vegetarian section. Going to check when I buy groceries this week to see if I find anything Vegan. Wal-Mart Supercenter, not very much. We have a Publix about 38 miles from us so that is an option to check out. I look forward to reading whatever you have to share.

Thanks for answering my distress call.

Winn Dixie is only in the southeast so that is understandable. I checked for health food stores. I only find GNC and I'm not sure what all they have. I looked online but I think I'd get a better perspective if I went there. I did find Agave Nectar at Wal-Mart. I did find something interesting about sugar and Vegans while doing research on Friday. Actually learned a little too. I'll keep hunting.

GNC is only a vitamin store. You'll probably have to use websites. If you have any questions just ask.

I'll check the grocery store here instead. I think what I have to do at this point is go and see what they have and if it is better than what I'm using. I'll take my points calculator with me and figure the points. If it's lower in points than what I'm using it'll be worth it. Every ten pounds I lose I have to refigure my daily points allowance. It usually goes down by one. What I've been doing and will continue to do is find things that are about the same, maybe healthier but lower in points. That way I'm still happy and don't feel like I'm missing out on something.

I'll be sure to ask if I have questions. Thanks!

I can do that. Sorry this was so long.

All food has a points value. It is based on calories, fat, and fiber. Foods that are higher in fiber, low in fat and calories are lower in points. It's just the opposite for foods lower in fiber, higher in fat and calories. Most all of your veggies are 0 points. Onions cooked for some reason are 1.

POINTS = (calories/50) + (fat grams/12) - (fiber grams/5)

I'll share this as well. If you eat two 100 calorie packs of something where the points value is 2 for one of them the points value changes. You would typically think the value would be four. Not so according to the formula because you have to double the amount for fiber, calories, and fat.

The lower calories thing is actually an attraction for me to the Vegan diet because some of what I've found is lower in calories and hense is lower in points. It seems to be WW friendly. But I won't go 100%.

I have a calculator that calculates the points for me (which I normally take with me when I shop but I forgot it today). The higher the points the less likely I am to eat something or even buy it. I also have a book that tells me how many points different food has. I think the calculator is more efficient though. I also have a nice WW scale that will measure my food and give me the points. I love it because sometimes using the book I've found I was actually cheating myself out of points. When I measure/weigh and see the points total is high I'll remove a little to lower the points. I'm all about portion control. I have to measure.

I have a daily points allowance too. For instance, I can only have 21 points per day. How you get your daily total is determined by a series of questions.

1. Are you
female?- score 2
Male?- score 8
A nursing mom?- score 12

2. How old are you?
17-26- score 4
27-37- score 3
38-47- score 2
48-58- score 1
over 58- score 0

3.What do you weigh?
Enter the first two digits of your weight in pounds.
(for example, if you weight 199, you will add 19 to your score)

4. How tall are you?
Under 5’1- score 0
5’1-5’10- score 1
Over 5’10- score 2

5. How do you spend most of your day?
Sitting down? score 0
Occasionally sitting? score 2
Walking most of the time? score 4
Doing physically hard work most of the time? score 6

You take the numbers from your answer and add them together. That is your daily total. For every ten pounds you lose you have to redo it. You will lose one point.

You also have an extra 35 points. Those are for the entire week. You can use them if you're over your daily points or to treat yourself. You just have to hold yourself accountable. I've never used all of my 35 extra points before.

I always believe in not eating if I'm not hungry. What I've had to do is learn to choose foods wisely. For a while I was not using all of my points and that was causing me to not lose weight. I've learned to use all my points. If I'm hungry again I use a few of my extra points. WW's Momentum program has helped as well. I've learned how to get more value out of what I eat. The filling foods help me stay satisfied longer.

I keep a journal of what I eat and how many points I've used. That is part of the points system. Writing it all down has been a big help too.

There is also and emphasis on exercising. Different exercises are assigned point values. It motivates you to exercise. For instance I may get 2 points for exercising for say 30 minutes depending on the intesity. I'm not to clear on just how that works but you can apply them to your daily points value if needed instead of using your extra 35 points. I think there are only so many in a day you can add to that though. I've never done it that way. I've always just seen how may activity points I can gain in a week which is fine.

They do have a program called the Core Program where you just eat off a list of foods (divided into food groups, that sort of thing). I did that for a while and it worked but I found I wasn't eating enough and went back to counting points.

I love WW because it is not a diet. It is a lifestyle change. I can basically eat what I want within reason. I just have to hold myself accountable.

wow. that is fascinating. thanks for sharing. sounds like a bit of a complicated process at first till you get the hang of it.

i keep a food journal and add up my caloric intake. i have a nutrition scale that is a big help that has most common foods stored in its memory so it gives me the total amount of calories. i try to stay within 14-1600 calories a day. 99% of the time i hit that goal.
