Hello everyone, I just wanted to come on here and say that my mother callled me this morning and said that she heard on the radio that Guiding Light was being cancelled. She said the ratings for the show were very low. And she also said that the final episode will air in September. It seemed strange to hear that, because Guiding Light started as a 15 minute radio program in 1937, so that made it the longest-running program in history. |

Hey Mike! Glad to see ya also, and I also hope you come on a bit more. We've missed you!! I heard it on the news this morning. It is a real shame that it's being cancelled, but I'm not really surprised. It's been the lowest rated soap for years, and the change they made last year with the production style really didn't do it any favors. I think if the writers would've wrote more storylines for veteran characters, and less on these newer ones I think it might still be on. For example, I really didn't give two hoots about Grady or Daisey, and they were crammed down the viewers throats everyday. I stopped watching it this past year mainly due to the lack of veteran characters. sigh.....I think that soaps on a whole won't last much longer. Even on Y&R the storylines are mediorce at best, and that kind of writing isn't going to draw fans in. Jmo though. |

Philip came back on Guiding Light a few weeks ago, and I thought that the ratings would have skyrocketed, but I guess they didn't. And I agree with you about Y&R. And the storylines on that show are really weird sometimes. Even Sharon Case herself told me it was boring on there a while back. |

Hey Mike; Thanks for the update on GL. I actually started watching my first soap with my Godmother along time ago and it was GL. I knew all of the characters, as I do on Y & R and B & B now and I really liked it but, they got rid of some of the actors that I liked, as they are doing on Y & R now and the show started going dwon hill. Hope Y & R doesn't make the same mistake but, time will tell I guess. Anyways, I think that it is sad for a long running show such as this to go away but, life goes on, no pun intended and I just pray that Y & R get their act together and relize that some of the stars on there actually ARE the show. Thanks again although it is sad news to hear. fisherman: |

It is sad to hear that. My mother has watched all the soaps on CBS, including Guiding Light, for as long as I care to remember. And Y&R went downhill when they hired that witchy head writer. Because she fired Jerry Douglas (John Abbott), and he had been on the show for almost 25 years. She had no idea about the history of the show, and what the characters meant to the show, and the fans. |

I am very sad about GL. My mother and grandmother both listened to this story on the radio. I've watched it my whole life. Its really sad because the stories/writing and acting are finally good again. Not only is GL going away but now they are saying that even though ATWT got a 1 year pick up that it will be its last. I'm really bummed out. I love Y&R.. I could live with out B&B , but ATWT and GL are also my favs. Its like family. |

I'm really sad about GL. I started watching it when it was a 15 minute segment some 50 years ago. Recently, it has really improved and I'm loving it. They've got the photography straightened out and brought back Grant Aleksander as Phillip and I am just loving the whole show. Grady is dead and haven't seen much of the other Foley brother either. They've also brought back a new Spaulding, James who is the son of Beth and Phillip and is now a teenager in boarding school. The show is getting better and better and I really hate to see it end after all these years!
