You are right, forums are a must have for hosting sites for public support as sometimes you may wish to see how support is handled and you can't do that if everything is done via one to one live chat and support tickets. They are also a must have for announcing new changes, etc. and when there might be some problems on the network somewhere rather than keeping everything away from public behind closed doors as how can you attract new customers if everything is only available to registered members/clients?
