The View from the Cubby Hole
Well here it is, the final report of a rollercoaster season. Big T's ploy of choosing to do his tea for the final match hoping bad weather would play its part, didn't come off as we gathered in sunshine at the pavilion.
Jezza again is captain and having won the toss put the Wood into bat as a couple of players were late in arriving. We opened with Trev 2 and the Gman with Trev 2 adding to last weeks bril bowling figures by hitting form again, this time with the bat. The Gman very much playing the supporting roll to start with (7 off 46 balls!) while Trev was scoring freely and they were going at just over 4 an over, Trev reaching his 50 in the 17th over. Having racked up a superb 127 the partnership was finally broken in the 26th over when Trev was enticed down the wicket and was out stumped for 70. The captain in next when 2 overs later the Gman fell like Trev to the same pairing having reached 42 - 134 for 2 off 28. Jezza succumbed to a catch in the next over and we were now 134 for 3 off 29. The new partnership was Robin and Matt P and they had added 30 when Matt became the 3rd stumping victim, going for 20 - 164 for 4 off 34. Robin was bowled next over - 164 for 5 and Big Nick was caught, again one over later - 176 for 6 off 36. King Kenny and Elton now occupied the crease and with much encouragement from the Pavilion they both ended not out on 11 and the Wood posted 199 for 6 when play stopped for tea at 3.30.
Our bowling attack was opened by Elton and Matt P and Stowting were 1 for 1 in the second over when Joey took a catch off Matt, make that 7 for 2 as Elton bowled the other opener, who was facing his first ball, in the 3rd over, a very promising start for the Wood. Matt struck again in the 6th over, bowling their no. 4 for 16 - 28 for 3 and Elton took his second wicket, bowling the no. 3 for 21 in the 11th over - 45 for 4. Big Nick replaced Matt as we started the 20 over countdown and in his third over took 2 wickets, a caught behind by Jezza acting as wicketkeeper and a bowled - 74 for 6, 18 overs to go. Unfortunately in the next over he fell trying to stop a boundary, landing heavily on his left arm and was unable to bowl any more, with Stowting's permission Arthur Leaver replaced him in the field as substitute. Bowling duties now fell to Joey, the Gman and then Trev 2 but this 7th wicket partnership proved to be rather prolific and stubborn notching up exactly 100 when Trev made the breakthrough thanks to a Matt catch - 174 for 7, 5 overs to go with Stowting needing 26 to win. Elton now back into the attack and he claimed the other half of this partnership with a caught and bowled in the next over - 177 for 8, 23 needed off 4. They hit 9 of these in the next over, 14 needed off 3. They then knocked off 5 leaving 9 to win off 2. Trev claimed the 9th wicket in the penultimate over thanks to a King Kenny catch and only leaked a single and Stowting were left needing 8 to win with one wicket left. The final over fell to Elton who started with two dot balls, they then scored 2, followed by two singles leaving them with 4 to get from the final ball - they managed to get bat on ball and ran a single but going for a second the King scooped up the ball and threw it to Jezza who had plenty of time to whip the bails off and the Wood had won (by 2 runs) off the final ball for the second match running. A great way for us to end the season.
This has, very much, been a season of highs and lows both in our friendlies and league matches. Well done to all our players, especially the regulars who turn out every week, there have been some fine individual performances this season (sorry again for missing your maiden century Shaun) and Trev 2's 7fer last week to name just two. It has also been very encouraging to see the contributions being made by some of our colts in the weekend teams, long may it continue. I think the perseverance award should go to Ken and Andy for their efforts in getting teams together week in and week out. I'm surprised they have any hair left with the frustration of last minute or unknown withdrawals. Apparently it used to be the rule that if you were down to play and then were unable to, you had to find a replacement which seems really sensible and should probably be in place again for next season.
A huge and heartfelt thank you to Rocket Roy for his efforts over the past 20 years in keeping the ground fit, you have really earned your retirement and we all wish you well.
A final reminder about the End of Season Awards Dinner at Etchinghill Golf Club next Saturday 3rd October, 7.00 for 7.30 start. There will be almost a full turn out from the colts but sadly I have to report that other playing members are few and far between :bash: Come on you Woodies, this is supposed to be your evening to congratulate players on their achievements. Please don't let it be a repeat of last year when the awards all went uncollected as the recipients had not bothered to turn up. I can accept numbers up to Thursday evening and can be contacted on 01303 269667 (leave a message if I'm not at home) - PLEASE, PLEASE MAKE THE EFFORT.
Well those are my reporting duties finished again. I trust they have brought a little bit of the Wood to those in far flung places and I thank those who have contributed with their remarks and opinions even when pointing out errors. If I don't see you next Saturday, enjoy your free weekends and be ready when the call goes out early next year.

Good reports for the whole season Barbara! Shame I did not make it over during the year. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the dinner but hope it turns out to be a good evening!

Thanks for all your reports this season Barbara. Sounds like another dramatic match on Saturday...are you sure you don't make some of them up?! There seem to have been a lot of last-ball wins!

Also, I didn't realise Roy was retiring as groundsman. He will be much missed. If you're looking for a replacement, Tom is very good at mowing his lawn these days....

A huge thank you for the reports Barbara and I would definitely echo the thanks to Rocket Roy and to Ken and Andy for sorting out the teams, even if my contribution was nil (mind you my contribution was not much more last year and I played about ten games).

Unfortunately I won't be putting my name forward for the head groundsman's role - too much bad blood after I was ousted as 'Minister of Bunting' without my knowledge on 'the night of the long flags'.

I'm afraid I won't be able to make the dinner but as I count as a non-player this season, I don't think I will be massively missed. Of course, it does mean I will miss Macca trying to convince me to go to La Paris (or somewhere) at the end of the evening. Ah well, maybe next year...

Barbs, awesome reports all year. Been great to catch up on the wood 100 miles away. Sadly can't make it tonight. Have the Milford CC annual dinner (my new club). Think a friendly is in order next year!
