Ok, The Pop Quiz for today? What is the price of a Web Server? Before you add connection costs. Can somebody say Astronomical? There can be more than one correct answer. But give me some details. Show me you did your home work. Storm Raven B) Edited by Storm Raven, May 17 2008, 01:43 PM.

Hmmmmm...... Well, If I build one, a good motherboard for a server is anywhere between $300 - $750. Plus they are picky about memory; if it's an Intel then it will take FB-DIMM memory, most likely DDr2-667. I imagine you would need ECC memory also; not the cheapest memory ever. Then, depending on how extensive I want my server system to be, I can add NAS (Network Attached Storage) and to configure it as a file server. Then I'm out the wazoo in hard drive cost. And that cost would be through the roof it we used SCSI drives. If I buy one preconfigured; wait I've seen a blade server on Dell go for $18,000. If I buy one already assembled, already connected on an off-site location; might as well buy the Dell. Considering the above, I like the idea of renting a server. |

Well I believe Dark is the winner... @ Chris I've known for a while about that deal, but I'm cautious, and am still checking his background. I need to know if he really has a right to rent the space. I been around too long, not to want answers to a lot of questions. So I am waiting to hear if its legit, ya know. If it's for real then its a deal. But once bitten twice shy. Storm Raven B) |

Next Pop quiz, Which is faster? double duos or a single quad? Everything else being equal. But don't forget to check the on board cache. Hint if you don't like math don't touch this one. Cause I want to see your math. Not someones opinion. Good Luck & Goodbye for now Storm Raven B) |

Well, it is my understanding that two Dual cores will be faster if they both have access to their own memory banks, such as on a Nvidia 3600 + 3050 with two AMD Dual Core Opterons. But of course, Two Quads is the best you can get right now on a desktop with an Intel 5400 mobo. BTW, did you know that Intel took their dual socket board (the 5400) and made a gaming board off of it? |

Domains you say! Now that is an even more unscrupulous business than the web hosting bunch. But I have already done my homework on that subject so I know who to avoid when it comes to registrars. A lot of them are crooks, pure and simple. Just like the web host reviewers taking kick backs for good reviews. First rule is never discuss a web site name openly, Because as soon as some one knows you are thinking about www.xyz.com the price goes up, up, up, and away. I do have ways to check name availability tho' without setting off alarms all over the place. I'm very good at doing it on the QT. The nasty game they play is to take your name, then sell it to someone else, who will be happy to sell it to you, for an arm and a leg. You get exactly what you pay for so never get taken in by the low price. "Once bitten, twice shy" Storm Raven B) Ok I really have to go now but I will be back (I am really starting to take a shine to this website guys) SR. Edited by Storm Raven, May 19 2008, 04:25 PM.

Here's that Mobo I was talking about, Intel took their 5400 server board and converted it into a desktop board for the gamers. It's one sexy board! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121330 |
