hi there My names David. I became a fan of Doctor Who at the age of 6 during season 25, i remeber that the first story i saw was Remembrance and i watched everyone thereafter. I love the Sylvester McCoy era, with my trmendous nostalgia for that period aside, i look at many of his stories as an adult and appreciate how wonderful the show was getting so late on in its life. Most people say that dr who declined progressively through the 1980s, but this is usually ill informed because Sylvester McCoys stories are head and shoulders above anything else in that decade in their daringness, originality and entertainment value. I can only think of stories like Kinda, Caves, season 18 and Enlightenment that truly come anywhere close to the McCoy years. Even Time and the Rani is a breath of fresh air after the dreary CB years, and as far as i can see, the only absolute failure of the McCoy era was Delta, but even this can only score full marks in terms of difference and freshness. 1987-1989 rank alongside the 1960s in terms of stretching the format of this wonderful show to the limits, McCoy, Aldred, Cartmel, Aaronovitch, Briggs, Platt and Ayres helped make the doctor an enigma, an alien and a true hero again, pitting him against the most incredible foes, and using the doctors genious to defeat them whether it be by using chess as a weapon or an ancient Gallifreyone weapon. The seventh doctor IS what the doctor should be, a manipulator, a schemer, a planner and above all a total mystery. According to the critics in the late 1980s, Doctor Who had alienated its child audience with increasing self indulgent, self referential episodes...RUBBISH!!!, thats what i say as i sat on the sofa after Wogan all those years ago as an infant and watched with exactly the same wonder, commitment and enjoyment that any child had done in the shows early "golden years". So heres to time's champion, a true hero to that little boy in 1988, and to this less little man in 2008. |
