Elsie Coxe
|
Name: Elsie Constance Coxe Age: 22 Class: Second Hometown: Belfast, Ireland Destination: New York, New York, USA Appearance(written description please): Perhaps it is her sweet face, rich with charm and life, that could be her best asset. Perhaps it is the large, dark eyes that manage to garner a second glance from onlookers. Whatever it is, only one word can be said about Elsie - delightful.
A young brunette, her hair is cut in a short, wavy bob, which covers over her her ears and subsequently frames her face. Her lips are thin and yet have the bow shape that is appreciated for the era that she is in, and they're very red - which can easily be scandalous. Her neck is long, which could be better suited for large, opulent hats, but poor little Elsie doesn't have the money or the desire to wear one, and opts instead to try for cuter, more youthful and much more fashionable cloches, which doesn't do much for her swanlike neck, but manages to work very well with her short bob.
Elsie doesn't bother wearing the latest fashions, though this is not to say that she's not at all fashion-conscious. She's a flapper to her heart, as is very well seen in her clothing - which show a bit more leg than would be acceptable, along with shockingly high-heeled Mary Jane shoes. She even wears stockings! Still, her dresses appear to be simple enough, save for their shocking lengths. Besides, one is likely not just looking at Elsie's dress - they're mainly looking at her. Personality: Lively and fun-loving, Elsie always enjoys having a good time. She is commonly seen dancing or being girlish, which is to be expected for her relatively young age. She is a girl who likes to push the envelope at times, smoking cigarettes, swearing, applying thick makeup and sometimes being sexual, though never being whorish. When dancing with men, she dances close with them. When trying to attract men, she makes eyes at them - which was one of those few things that she learned from watching some of Theda Bara's movies.
She is all for women's rights, and is a young feminist. Perhaps her being a young feminist may be grounds for alarm for the much more traditional and conservative members of society, though she most worries the traditional female component, rather than the men. She's too busy trying to turn the womens' sons on.
Her biggest flaw is that she doesn't take life seriously enough. Her priorities are completely messed up. Her biggest priorities are going to America to become a big actress, though in the meantime she parties way too much. She tends to drink more than should be acceptable, and at times may pass out from her social drinking sessions. Due to her liberalism in regards to women's rights and her own body, Elsie is assumed to be of loose morals and promiscuous. Women like to watch their husbands, boyfriends and crushes when Elsie is around.
Background: Belfast was a place that always lived under the shadow of cities like London. Still, even living under the shadow of England, Belfast was not a poor place. In fact, there existed shipyards and other such places in the city which managed to net the city quite a bit of money. Those who were rich were very rich, though they quickly flocked to London. Those who were poor were in absolute poverty, living in conditions that no human being should have been forced to survive in. The Coxe family were one of the lucky ones that didn't have to live that way. It was Harland and Wolff that managed to get Elsie's father a good job. Elsie's mother was a homemaker. So when Elsie was born, she was born to a happily middle class family.
Elsie wasn't the type to want for anything, though she wasn't the kind who would get anything that she wanted. While her parents were both Irish Catholic, they tended to be a bit repressive towards her behaviors. Her mother was unimpressed with many facets of society, but she was even less pleased with actors and actresses - especially those in film. The women did such unspeakable things like show their legs, smoke cigarettes and wear makeup - which was most improper for a woman. Elsie was supposed to dislike these women, but she didn't. In fact, she was inspired by them, and would sneak out of the house, with a few coins, to go see the latest films from America and from companies like Pathé and Essanay. Elsie was intrigued by these beautiful people, their expressions priceless, the women always so graceful and pretty, and the men who were always dashing. While she was raised to be a proper Christian girl, she still managed to go out and see the latest women strut their stuff. She would try to make her lips appear like Lillian Gish, or make eyes and slink like Theda Bara, or to do the Charleston like Joan Crawford, or even to have the sweet demeanor of Mary Pickford.
She would get allowance from her mother for cleaning, and would continually choose to save much of it - spending the money only for the movies. When she finally saved enough, she bought herself a ticket to America, and packed her clothes. She would run away from her family and her boring life in Belfast to the sunny shores and promises of California.
