Panicked steps. Heavy breaths.

It was no surprise that a tall, long limbed, kind of sporty looking guy like Vincent had gained some ground right behind her once he took off running from the lion too. Not to mention the luggage Wendy had chosen not to abandon, impeding her speed.

Her duffle stuffed with flowers on her back, her blackened wood baton in one hand, an iced Mr. Dolph in the other; they were all much too special. Her plaid skirt wasn't really helping matters either. The quest for pants would surely have to start sooner rather than later, granted if she wasn't dead by lead first.

Fortunately, one benefit of the bog down pace was the awareness of the crude oil bog down there.

Wendy swiftly braked onto her heels, her eyes examining the underbrush for a safe step. Vincent had managed to catch up and then over take her.

"Hey wait, you might wanna-" Wendy began, calling out, stretching her baton with a point toward the darkly hidden well.

"Watch out."

Poor wildebeest, so greatly unaware.

There was a saying. Something about bears and escaping them. Not to say that Konipiepie was a bear or anything, but it kinda rang true for the moment.

When you were followed by a bear wanting your blood, you did not have to be faster than the bear. You simply had to be faster than the poor sap you were traveling with.

Unfortunately for Wendy, she was that one poor sap. Not to disregard her athletic abilities, of course, but for some reason Wendy decided to take that huge weight with her. It was really just a matter of time - in fact, just a few seconds - for Vincent to pass Wendy and gain ground.

Also unfortunately, he made a grave mistake. Vincent listened to someone else.

Instead of watching out, as told, Vincent just turned his head. And then he stumbled upon something and soon enough he was falling somewhere and even though he managed to catch himself, something else caught him as well.

Two of his four limbs - the left leg and the right arm to be exact - were swallowed by the tar pits.

Vincent looked at his engulfed meat with mild surprise. He had not expected the tar to be warm, for some reason. He looked back to Wendy again.

"Might wanna give me a hand here?"

Wendy leaned against the old sign post which stood tall next to the murky dangers which lurked below.

She observed the gnu, engrossed in its struggles, as the grime engrossed it.

Seconds later, she wandered forward, offering her tar stuck staff as the stuck sap called out for her aid. Vincent needed her assistance, he needed her helping hand, needed her now, to do stuff to get unstuck. There was a slight reach out, an attempt to grab the timber slab like a lifeline.

poke-poke.

Two taps to the forehead, before swaying the stick in rhythmic gymnastics, away from its grasp, mere inches abroad. She fluttered her eye lashes and took a step back.

"Nah, I'm good," she raised an eyebrow to the echo.

With a wink and wave of the hand, Wendy blew him a kiss.

"Take care."

Well. She had warned them. Unfortunately for the boy he wasn't sharp enough to understand the bargain she'd put on the table. The girl with the cooler did though, and seemed to almost relish the opportunity to abandon him to his fate. She was notable. Possibly even dangerous. So far she was the only person she'd met who also might have the capacity to survive, but unlike KK she wasn't afraid.
...oh.
KK didn't have to force herself to label her as inhuman. That conclusion flowed without a second thought.
Strange.
She continued her calm stride towards her now trapped prey with only slight hesitation to make sure the girl had really left. Once she was a few feet away, she stopped and stared at him in the pit.
I...
Sighed.
I don't have to do it.
Sat down with her gun laid over her lap.
You can't make me do it this time.

That was completely uncalled for.

Vincent couldn't believe it. No, he could believe it. But still, he could not believe it happen to him. Of course his classmates were a bunch of loony idiots who couldn't keep a rock sticking to the ground if they wanted. Of course they had no character, no culture, no class to speak of.

Yet, Wendy abandoned him just like that.

He could hear KK approach from behind.

She had sat down nearby. The gun of hers rested in her lap. Well, that was how it was then. It was not the fact that he was about to die. No, that did not bother him at all, but something else annoyed him. KK had warned him, somehow. In fact, even just then did she call him out again and confirm that she was right. And above all else, that was the worst part of the whole situation. She was right and he was wrong.

"I am requesting last words."

He hesitated for a polite second.

"Want to hear a little joke?"

Last words were appropriate. Maybe he didn't realize it yet, but neither of them were going anywhere for awhile. She was happy to listen until then. The gun wasn't even pointed at him; had he noticed? Did he understand what that meant? She supposed it would become clear in time, and she'd hate to distract from whatever business he felt he had left. He'd made his choice. Now he'd live with the consequences and the advantages that went with it.

"Hey, the name's Vincent. But do call me Vin instead."

He tried to give his voice a more cheerful affection, but it came out less than impactful.

Last words, at least when meditated, were usually carefully crafted expressions of the self. "Jefferson still lives." "Shoot, cowards, you can only kill the man." "Have I played the part well? Then applaud me as I exit." The sort of thing you cheated into a speech to try and sound intellectually rounded when you were out of actual arguments or too uninspired to think of something suitable on your own. But Vincent's last words evoked another's: "Last words are for fools who haven't said enough."
Who's listening to him die?
Vincent was a fool. No wonder he'd got himself into this mess.
Will anyone write down what he said?
Katarina's expression didn't crack through his joke. After a beat she raised an eyebrow and nodded. "Okay, Vin. I'm not going to kill you."

She did not laugh.

Well, that was to be expected. Vincent shifted his position a but - an action meant to add some comfort but that burrowed him deeper into the tar pits. Aside from that, he bit his lips.

Now that she said that she would not kill him, there were a bunch of other words Vincent could have used. Or well, something vaguely wise that he could've come up with in the moment. Something inspiring, maybe spiteful, something that made the world remember his lost potential. Hell, maybe even just something routine, like asking what KK's actual surname was.

But, ah, as it was, he had said his last words. A man of his word, Vincent was unable to step back from those now, wasn't he?

Alas, if it meant dying without knowing what exactly Konipakata's name was, then so be it.

Vincent descended deeper. Even with the speed as it was, it would take a bit for the pit to devour him whole.

She'd have to bear his grumpy stare for hours, then. Or just shoot him. It was her call now.

There was a lot they could have talked about during their long wait. How, in some ways, it was sad things had gone like this for him. That she wasn't doing this out of cruelty or spite, but efficiency; Katarina didn't enjoy killing people, and there was no reason to put a bullet in him other than mercy, but he'd already made his choice to reject that gesture when he ran. He would have been a convenient person to discuss her fear with; he couldn't hurt her, and his judgement wouldn't matter for long. All of it could have been spilled. The need to survive no matter the cost, the sickness that came with every act of violence that she strangled barehanded until she wanted to weep, the quiet paranoia that no matter how hard she planned and pushed herself and killed her way through their friends that more likely than not someone would just get lucky and that would be the end of her, and the resulting solipsism that twisted her between hyper-vigilant calculation and acceptance.
Oh.
Getting the perspective of someone who was functionally out of the game but not quite there yet had its own appeal, given how calmly he was taking his circumstances. He didn't scream, or cry, or beg for mercy. He was a fool, but he was a dying fool. There might be some moment of clarity that they could share to both of their benefit. Conversation was beneficial to both of their positions.
No.
But Vin didn't want that. He'd bit his lip and taken to staring at her in silence. Inch by inch he disappeared without a word of protest, and Katarina responded in kind. Every once in awhile she would rise to stretch or to scout in a circle around them to make sure no one was coming to save him, but she always ended up right back in his sight line staring him down. They had nothing to hide from each other, and she had a feeling that neither of them would shrink before the pit forced them to part.
I don't like this.
It could be a fascinating break to examine from the outside. Vincent eventually snapping to beg for mercy, or to send a message to his loved ones, or to try and bargain his way out. KK snapping to seek the connection she wasn't possibly allowed to have during this leg of the race. Both of them ultimately looking to take closure, and ultimately agency, over the situation.
Please just die.
But Vin had claimed his last words, and Katarina didn't talk to corpses.

It felt a bit like mockery. To see her stretch, while Vincent was feeling so uncomfortable. No, everything was warm where Vincent could still feel. Everything else was numb, or in discomfort.

Now, the thing to it was, that despite all things, Vincent had some slight hope there would be help. Someone to come in like the cavalry, pop a bullet in KK's head and help him out. Maybe not someone like Kasumi, who was where she was. Maybe not someone like Wendy who likely got far away by now and hopefully got shot to death. Maybe not someone like Damion or...

...

On second thought, Vincent opened his mouth ajar and turned his head.

His body would have struggled, had it been afforded the space to move.

Vin opened his mouth and seemed to drink the tar in greedily. There was no warning, nothing that could prepare anybody for that. That's what finally got her to crack. The fear she'd been holding in all this time rushed to the surface on a route no blood or gunfire or sadistic abandonment could pave.
NOT LIKE THAT
He'd claimed agency after all. Somewhere underneath the shock and disgust, she couldn't help but be impressed. Even in the most impossible scenario he'd found a way out on his own terms. It was admirable. He was a fool, but a damn determined one. Somebody better remember him.
...
It wouldn't be her though. Not now. As Katarina rose and walked back towards the clearing where she'd left her bag, her process was already at work.
...
Vin became Vincent.
Please.
Vincent became a boy who drowned in the tar.
I don't want to think about it anymore.
A boy who drowned in the tar became another corpse she'd left lying at the pits.
Just let me walk away.
Another corpse she'd left lying at the pits became another corpse she'd left behind on the island.
Don't let them in.
That was all anyone else here could ever be.
