G17 BRIGID PAXTON: Start

Brigid quietly walked through the trees. She kept her gaze forward as she walked. SLung over one shoulder was her bag, identifying her as Girl #17. In her hand was the weird weapon she was given, a bec de corbin the paper in her bag called it. It was a hammer with a spike, confirming to Brigid that the terrorists wanted her to kill.

She couldn't believe it. When Mr. Dolph died, she was too scared to say anything. She climbed up a bit in her seat, but she couldn't cry or scream. She was frozen, staring at the monsters before her. Her breathing had increased, exiting through her nose as quickly as it entered.

After that, it was a blur. She awoke in some woods. This was definitely not the aquarium, so she knew it was real. Once she had her weapon, she started walking. She picked a direction, and kept going. The trees were thick, making it hard to tell if there was an exit, or even if it was still day.

Eventually, she noticed a clearing. She walked a bit further, and was at the edge of the woods. There was a small beach, but she was definitely looking at the ocean.

She stepped onto the sand, and stared out. She couldn't believe it. It was like those terrorists said. They were on an island, fitted with bombs, given weapons, and now they'd have to fight until someone was dead.

Brigid breathed in, closed her eyes, leaned forward a bit, and screamed. She screamed louder than she ever did in her life. She screamed at the water before her, as if it'd carry over the ocean and back home where someone could come rescue her.

She continued to scream, holding one long scream over a few seconds. Her face started to turn red, and her eyes started to water. Brigid was faced with her new reality, and all she could do was scream.

B30: Christopher Schwartz, START

And of course, that screaming attracted one Christopher Schwartz, who stared at the girl from the edge of the trees. The mahuacuitl was held in his right hand, his left thumb leaking blood from a small cut he had inflicted on himself.

His weapon was sharp, so it was... a weapon, at least. Christopher squinted, getting a look at the girl. Not that it was easy from this angle or this distance, of course. But Christopher could see well enough to notice the long polearm in her hand.

And she started screaming. Christopher didn't know whether or not to approach her. He didn't want to attract the attention of a possible psycho.

After all, Christopher knew about what had happened five years ago. And when he saw Mr. Dolph's grey matter spill onto the floor of the bus (still an unpleasant image), he knew that this was no game.

He wasn't going to take his chances here. So he continued to watch from the trees, his grip tightening on his club as he did.

((Jasmine King, continued from Pet Sematary))

The beach had given way to a set of woods after a minute or so spent walking. Jasmine had tried to keep walking on the beach after that - tried to see if there was a slope she could just walk up to get off - but eventually, she had to stop. Had to go over to the incline cutting off the bridge and the woods. Had to heave her body up - bag first, gun second - over it. It wasn’t fun, it wasn’t pretty, but it was fine. She could do it. She’d gotten her body up over the ledge and after a brief moment of pain, a brief moment where her legs moaned longer than she’d felt they’d ever moaned before, she was fine. She could get up. She could begin to walk through the woods right in front of her.

And hey, really, you think you have another choice, Jazzy? You wanna be the strongest, right? No way you can do that if you can’t get over a simple ledge.

She felt the buzz of anger for a quick moment. A quick pang of irritation as she walked through the forest, bag on her back and gun in her hand. She was looking for… people, she’d decided. People to talk to. People to group up with. She knew she couldn’t last with them, she knew she had to divorce herself from them if she wanted to be the fittest, but she imagined that there was safety in numbers. She imagined that it would be easier to live a little longer if she stuck with a group. Found a friend. Had someone who would watch her back in return for her watching theirs. It seemed like a good enough deal, it seemed like a good enough plan, so there she was. Walking through the woods just looking to see if there was anyone else on this island.

And she was walking through the woods, looking at the gun in her hand, when she heard the scream. The noise seeming to shatter the silence of her footsteps and breathing.

She smiled, as she heard that.

It looked like she’d gotten her person.

She jogged - almost ran towards the sound of the voice. To the girl in the clearing, still filling Jasmine’s ears. Still screaming her fucking head off. She was… Brigid, Jasmine was pretty sure. Track team. Writing club. No friends. Pretty boring as people went, honestly. Jasmine didn’t really have anything in her gossip bank about her. Never would have, in all honesty. Even if this hadn’t happened it wasn’t likely that Jasmine would have found anything for her. She was uneventful. Boring. As far off Jasmine’s radar as someone possibly could.

And hey, she’s not gonna get on it anytime soon if she’s gonna keep screaming like that. Like, seriously. At least you didn’t just try to attract a thousand other people to you when you woke up.

And that was true.

And honestly, Jasmine wasn’t sure whether or not she wanted someone… acting like Brigid was on her team, but it didn’t look like there were too many other options at the moment. So she stepped forward. Left the arm with the gun hang limp at her side.

Briefly considered, for a moment, what she was going to say. What she could say. How she could get Brigid to stop.

She didn’t have an answer, but…

“Hey, um…” Jasmine said. “You okay?”

A dark figure walked with a bag through the woods, his suit ruined, his hair messier than usual as they rubbed his hair to deal with the bizarre situation.

Blaine Eno (Male student #32) was awoken by a familiar voice, the voice of Brigid Paxton, a girl he knew from the track team. He removed his tie from the suit and desperately walked to the voice and thus made himself visible to Brigid, Jasmine, not noticing Christopher.

"Jasmine! Brigid!", he happily exclaimed. He tried to smile. It almost looked like a real smile. He was happy to see them, to have someone to talk with about what had happened in the bus.

"I hope you are fine!"

He shouted this at them and walked further to them, but came to a halt. He suddenly stopped walking and stopped smiling as he saw Jasmine and Brigid. Tears are contagious. Suddenly, he really did not feel well about the situation. He couldn't tell why. He liked Jasmine, he liked Brigid, but he had a really bad feeling about this. He had the choice to walk to the people. That was one choice that could lead to him to...die. There was no real reason to assume that but there was just something about this situation that made him thin-

Oh. The gun.

He was uncertain, indecisive. His palms are sweaty. Knees weak, arms are heavy.

He considered walking to the beach.

No.

They were in the game about life and death. Blaine's face frowned and he turned around. Talking and company is not something what he really needed right now. No, he needed a break. He needed time to think. He needed time to decide. He needed a smoke.

So as he walked away from Jasmine and Brigid he lit his cigarette and disappeared into the woods without returning.

Brigid continued to scream out into the ocean. She could feel her throat getting drier and drier, but kept going. It wasn't until she felt a lack of oxygen that she stopped. She quickly breathed in, feeling her coarse throat take in the air. Before she could keep screaming, she heard someone call out to her.

She turned and saw Jasmine King. Brigid suddenly felt a bit embarrassed. She had come to the ocean to take out her frustration with her situation, and ended up attracting some really worries and possibly confused person. Brigid was about to speak, when she heard another person call out.

She leaned, looking past Jasmine, to see who it was. It was Blaine from track team. She was somewhat familiar with him, and was sort of glad there was a casual acquaintance here. Before she could say anything, he stepped back and hurried away. Blaine then disappeared into the woods.

Brigid wasn't sure what made him high tail it out of their so quickly. Was he intimidated by the bec de corbin?

Brigid coughed a bit into her elbow. She probably should get something to drink soon. She then looked at Jasmine.

"Um...hi."

And Christopher watched as another girl came into the picture. And of course, Christopher could be sure who this girl was, either. But she had come and done what he hadn't done. What he decided not to do.

She'd approached the other girl, and the other girl didn't respond like Christopher had feared. Instead she turned around and... it was only then that Christopher noticed the third person enter...

Only to just as quickly leave.

Christopher debated what to do, then. The two girls were'nt going at each other like he had imagined they would. Though really... what basis did Christopher have to assume that? Truthfully, he didn't know any of the details of what had happened five years ago, but it had always played out in his head like an all out orgy of blood, violencce, and fire.

Thinking about it now, that was kinda stupid.

But that left the question of hat to do from this point. He could turn and leave, like that other guy did. But was going off alone really the best idea? Having allies would be a lot better, he supposed.

But then, he didn't know the girls, or at least... he didn't know if he knew the girls. They were too far away to identify. He could have sworn he heard the guy from before say their names...

Jasmine? Brigid?

Hmm... he wasn't too familiar with either of those girls, but the names did bring faces to mind. He didn't dislike either of them, he guessed, but they never really interacted, so it was hard for him to really gauge them.

But they were here right now, and he didn't know if he would run into anyone else civilly having conversations. No conflict had occurred between the two girls, and... well...

Better the devil you know, right?

Something like that.

Christopher quietly cleared his throat, before emerging from the trees.

"Hey!" he called out to the girls, "I heard screaming! What's going on? Is everything alright?"

They didn't need to know that he'd been watching them.

Oddly enough, Brigid was not the first person to react to Jasmine’s greeting.

She heard footsteps. Rustling. A voice semi-familiar calling out to the two of them. Jasmine turned her head. Looked for where the noise was coming from. Saw the shape. Saw the boy. Blaine, his name was. He was a boy in the track team. A boy in the orchestra. Jasmine didn’t really talk to him a lot - no real need to, really; he was fairly popular but not a person that Jasmine really needed to talk to - but she’d talked about him. About the rumours. About the sorts of things that he did at parties. Jasmine never really went to them herself - too loud, too chaotic - but every time one had happened, every time she’d seen the results on Facebook, she asked around. Went to someone like Miranda to get the story.

But this wasn’t about parties. This wasn’t about Miranda. This was about Blaine. The boy standing in front of her.

How he was here with her.

How he would be absolutely perfect to work with.

So she puffed her chest. Put on the closest thing she could get to a smile in this situation.

And then watched as Blaine walked right past them, out of sight.

And there was a feeling rising up within her. Biting into her skin. Crawling up the back of her throat.

Did he seriously just-

Did he actually-

Hey, wait, no. Calm down. No point in freaking out. He’s just an idiot. A jackass.

Honestly, he’ll probably be dead in the next few days. Don’t worry about it.

And that was true, she supposed. That was fine. Even if the feeling of anger was still there she could take it. Ignore it. Look at Brigid over here and consider the fact that she was still here. That she had calmed down, that she had-

Third shape.

Third voice.

She turned. Looked. Saw… Chris. He was… a person. Not one Jasmine knew. Not one Jasmine cared about. He was normal. He was boring. He didn’t provide any gossip or anything intelligent or anything else interesting about him so he fell to the wayside.

Well.

Would have fallen to the wayside.

Now that she was here, now that he was with her, it was an entirely new story.

“Hey. I’m, uh, fine. I think it might be, um… nerves, and all.”

Maybe it would be one that worked out well for her.

“Are you doing alright?”

Before Brigid could get a response from Jasmine, another male voice called out. She turned and saw Christopher, who was asking what the screaming was all about. Jasmine suggested it was nerves. Brigid nodded.

"Y-yeah," she said. "Just...wanted to let out some feelings. I didn't mean to make anyone worry."

She turned her head down a bit, putting both her hands around the bec de corbin.

"Just felt like the right thing to do right now. You know, considering the options."

Brigid bit her lip. She hoped they knew what she meant. She cleared her throat a bit.

"But, um, how are you guys?"

Jasmine said that it might have been nerves. Brigid backed that up, saying the screaming was... well, understandable, given the situation.

"Well, I've been doing... fine, I guess," Christopher said, staring past the two girls at a point in the horizon. Well, fine was a relative term, wasn't it?

He coughed, before looking at the two girls again. He had established that these girls were, at the very least, not immediately threatening to him. Otherwise, violence would have already started. He couldn't help but feel that he shouldn't let his guard down, but for now, at least, he could afford not to be so tense.

"What are your plans? I mean... sitting around and talking isn't a bad idea, I guess, but that's not gonna carry us through this whole thing."

As much as Christopher wanted it to, he knew it wouldn't. And so he had to think ahead on how he was going to survive. The problem? He had nothing. Maybe... hopefully... one of the two girls had something.

Everybody seemed to be okay for the other two people here.

Which was good for Jasmine. Even though she wasn’t really happy about the fact that they were happy, per sae, it was still good. It still made Jasmine happy. She knew she needed to talk to them - she knew she needed to find some sort of group, at least for these early stages - so it was good that they were alright, it was good that they were adjusting. God knew she didn’t want to have to be that person talking to someone while they were screaming. While they were blubbering. While they were generally being hard to talk to so hey, given that the other two seemed calm (well, seemed calm now), that was good for Jasmine. That in particular made Jasmine happy.

So yeah. They were calm. They were talking. Asking her questions. Asking her what she wanted.

It looked like things were working out well for her so far.

Atta girl.

“Yeah, I’ve been doing… okay, I guess. Considering the circumstances and all.”

And she remembered the beach. The rock behind her. The warmth in her eyes. The tears on her body.

And she knew that she was never going to feel that again. Not if she could help it.

“I was thinking of trying to see who could group up with me,” she said, looking at the other two as she lifted the gun in her hands up. “I’ve got this, but, um…”

She paused. Looked around again.

“I feel we need safety in numbers. I don’t think taking… this part of the game alone is a very smart idea.”

Brigid reached into her bag to get a bottle of water out while Christopher and Jasmine spoke. They both seemed to be taking this situation pretty well, regardless of the terror and dread of what could possibly come. She pulled one of the bottles out, opened it, and took a sip. That helped alleviate the pain in her throat a bit, so she was sure that wouldn't be too much of a hassle going forward.

She put the bottle back in her bag.

"Yeah, I agree with numbers," Brigid told Jasmine. "I guess a gun is also useful, at least more than this."

Brigid held up the bec de corbin.

"Well, they'll probably be more intimidated by the gun. I'm sure this isn't so bad to have."

Brigid pursed her lips a bit. She was starting to wonder if she was really that bad at small talk. Maybe she should have tried talking to more people if she knew she was going to be somewhere like here.

"But yeah, I'm up for an alliance."

"Yeah, that's probably a good idea," Christopher said.

For now, at least. For now, it was best to stick with people and look out for threats. He had to look out for himself... but he couldn't do that alone. He looked to Brigid, then to Jasmine. He felt the weight of the weapon in his hands.

"At the very least, at least all of our weapons are, you know, weapons," he stated. "Safety in numbers, and in power. That's all we can really hope for, huh?"

Christopher wondered if anyone had already died yet. He hoped not. It meant that the safety of familiarity was already gone, and the earlier it was gone, the longer he had to keep his guard up.

Though it was probably a good idea to keep his guard up either way, huh?

"I don't know, is this okay, then? I don't feel like standing around in the open is quite the best," Christopher said, "We should move on, if we're moving on."

He looked around. Someone could be hiding in the trees, like he had. Someone less friendly. Someone with the ability and the willingness to hit them from the trees.

They had both said yes.

They had both accepted her deal.

And that was fantastic for Jasmine. That meant that she had people to travel with. That meant that she had people to protect her. That meant that her chances of surviving this game - at least for these early stages - had just skyrocketed up, had just become even more possible. She knew that this alliance wouldn’t last forever, she knew that she barely knew any of the two people who were going to be with her now, but that didn’t matter. Numbers were numbers. If anyone tried to do anything to her, the odds said that they would be outnumbered. If anyone got a shot off on them, the odds said that it would be less likely to hit her now.

Which made her worry, slightly.

Which made her question why exactly the others were so eager to accept her deal.

Nah, you don’t need to worry about it. You’re finally in a group. That gives you so much of a leg up over the competition. Seriously. You don’t even know how much better off you are.

But that wasn’t the point.

But they could-

Doesn’t matter. Seriously, you’re lucky. Just be happy that something good finally happened to you, girl.

And she supposed that that was true.

And she supposed that if it was the case that they would betray her, throw her in front of a bullet, then she could try to stop that. Try to get up on top of them.

Stand above both of them.

As you deserve.

And she smiled, at the both of them. Looked at Christopher as he asked his question.

Answered:

“We should, yeah,” she said, as she looked around. There wasn’t anybody she could see, but the only point that made was one agreeing with Chris. “Anyone have, um… any particular requests as to where we go?”

Okay, it looked like an alliance was made. Brigid wasn't too sure what kind of people Christopher and Jasmine were, but if they could be calm now and ally with her despite her screaming fit, then maybe they'd be good to stay with.

Jasmine suggested they find somewhere to go, and was open for suggestions. It occurred to Brigid that she didn't even check to see if she had a map. She had just walked in one direction after waking up and managed to arrive at the beach. She pulled her bag over and opened it up, searching through for her map.

"Um, let's see," she said.

She pulled the map out. Sure enough, there was one. She looked over the map.

"Okay, we're probably at the Coastal Woods," she said, "just because of all the trees and the proximity to the coast. Lessee..."

Her eyes scanned the map.

"The Isolated Cabin is probably the closest shelter, but it's marked, so it's probably not a secret. Either way, it might help to move south where more of the structures are."

Christopher thought about what Brigid had said. It was true that shelter was important, but yeah, there would probably be other people who were heading there or were already there.

"Well, on the one hand," he started, "More people means more potential allies, but it also means more potential... well, not those. Though, yeah, I think our priority is to find shelter."

Christopher shifted his feet a little, before looking to the south... or where he thought was south.

"Let's go, then, shall we?" Chris said, "If we can find more friendly people, we can strengthen our chances."

He began to walk.
