Walking to school, thought Richard Ormsby, was pretty damn lame, but it actually beat the hell out of a lot of the alternatives. Exhibit A was the bus, either school or public flavor. If you rode the bus, it meant you were poor, neglected, or retarded. It also meant absolutely all the other poor neglected retards knew, because they were also there on the bus, and they might want to hang out and talk and be bestest friends or something. Richard had been on the bus, once or twice. Fuck the bus.

No, he'd take walking any day. Walking meant he could meet up with his very good actual friends, a couple of eighth graders named Dan and Tyler. They were just a year ahead of Richard, but Dan was already almost six feet tall and monstrously fat and claimed he was being scouted by local high schools to play on their football teams (he played on the middle school team and went on and on about how lame it was he couldn't really tackle people as hard as he wanted, and if he wasn't an amazing player it was at least undeniable that he was large and intimidating) and Tyler had been held back a year because it turned out he cheated on all his math and science stuff and he stole cigarette butts from his dad's astray and smoked them while they walked. Dan and Tyler had originally walked alone and when they'd first seen Richard back at the start of the year it had looked like maybe they'd give him a bad time, but he'd gotten nervous and said what the fuck were they looking at? and that turn of phrase had charmed them enough that they'd invited him to walk along with them. His parents had seen them once or twice and had said he could invite them over after class sometime, but it was hard to really imagine Dan's round face and tight orange curls or Tyler's squirrely smoke-stinking do-rag-wearing presence at the dinner table.

And besides, Richard liked the guys, but there was always this thought in the back of his head when they messed around with other kids like maybe someday there wouldn't be anyone else and Dan and Tyler would be bored and maybe not so nice. Letting them see him in the context of his boring and lame home life would increase the likelihood of that happening. They already called him "Little Richard" and thought that was really hilarious for some reason, and he hated it but wasn't about to talk back. But that was fine. They were fun guys, with a good sense of humor, and other small kids (mostly sixth graders but some of Richard's classmates too) were plentiful, so he could just redirect their humor a bit and join in. The three of them would get going early and then hang out a block or so away from school and just mess with the people who came by who looked like they couldn't do too much about it. It wasn't like they hurt anyone, of course. Just made 'em sweat a little. A good joke.

Which all brought Richard around to Exhibit B of lame-ass ways to get to school: riding a bike. It was all the exercise factor of walking, but you had to wear stupid safety gear and also you looked like a refugee from the Great Depression or maybe France. It was also pretty solitary, so there was nobody to back you up if you happened to roll into three jokers searching for a punchline.

So today, when Richard started looking for some entertainment, the vaguely-familiar biker rolling his way seemed promising. Dan and Tyler were hanging out in a patch of grass, Tyler trying to coax his cigarette butt to flame and Dan eating some Oreos Richard had given him out of his lunch, and neither seemed that riled up, but these things could swing quickly. So Richard said, "Guys, check this out," and then stepped out into the sidewalk and waved at the oncoming bicyclist and shouted, "Yo, hey, hold up a sec."

[[Kyran Dean Memories Thread #1]]

Again.

Two big ugly dudes and that dick, Ormsby. Hate those guys.

Kyran thought he'd be free from those guys, at least outside of the middle school, but lately they'd been hanging around a block close by, before school. This unfortunately was on his regular route to and from school, the same one he'd been using ever since he first started 7th grade here. They'd been awful to him at school, but Richard was the worst. So of course he'd ruin Kyran's usually tranquil and care-free bike ride as well.

It wasn't all too bad though, he'd never been significantly hurt at least, but it was irritating, really dang irritating. Richard had never ceased in harassing him at every opportunity, seemingly enjoying every moment. The names or verbal teasing never bothered Kyran. However it started to become a real problem, when Richard became more daring after deducing Kyran as an easy target. He found worse ways to torment, such as asking to "borrow a dollar" which ended up with Kyran's bag being grabbed and his belongings emptied out onto the ground as entertainment for Richard's friends.

Nobody knew though. Kyran had never brought that up to anyone, especially not to his family. All they'd do is make it a big deal. It would get too much attention and all Kyran wanted was to have some peace and quiet and to be left alone, was that too much to ask? Apparently it was, with Richard now noticing him and calling him over.

BS, he wouldn't go there if he didn't have to, but it was kinda tough, seeing as the road near school was busy with last minute parents in their minivans driving their children to school, causing some traffic. He'd go around, and find a different route if he could, but this was the quickest, he was already near and it was already around ten minutes from the first bell. Kyran decided he's just ride past, and not acknowledge them, even if the traffic and Richard's fat friends were acting as roadblock. He'd maneuver along, somehow.

Kyran wished to pick up his pace, but it was tough, as his backpack was considerably large on Kyran's small frame. He wasn't even wearing his safety gear that his mom would enforce, especially considering Kyran's tendency for injury, because he felt lame wearing all of that. It was all shoved into his book bag after he was clear from home, with his helmet strapped and dangling onto the side of the backpack as well.

He'd grow eventually, dad would say, he was just a late bloomer, just look at his eldest brother. Not that Kyran cared, he didn't mind being smaller, it made it easier to go unnoticed, people would leave him alone and he'd have some independence. That was what Kyran ideally thought at least, when really, he hadn't taken into account that middle school was way different from elementary school. It took the worst parts of what both high school and grade school had to offer and mish-mashed it into a hodge podge of stinky, adolescent monsters. Case in point.

Now, Richard Ormsby wasn't that big, in fact most would consider him average, but to an even smaller Kyran, he was big enough, especially with two hulking behemoths at his sides. That may be why Richard chose Kyran as his own personal punching bag.

Kyran pedalled forward on the sidewalk, nearer to the school, but also nearer to the boys he wanted to avoid. There wasn't really a choice. He kept his face forward, avoiding eye contact at all cost. Then he began to swerve around to pass the boys.

"Hey. Hey, Dean, yo," Richard said, because Dipshit was trying to just roll on by like he hadn't heard. That was really not the right move to make. Nobody liked being ignored, and it really got under Richard's skin in particular when people acted like he didn't exist. Kyran Dean was probably thinking that he'd avoid offending Richard by keeping his head down and keeping moving, but he was wrong. It was, therefore, important for Richard to educate him as regarded that fact. After all, if Dean was going to try to not piss Richard off, some constructive feedback was vital. Otherwise, he might get the idea that what he was doing was acceptable.

Besides, if Richard just let the guy blow through he'd look like a schmuck to Dan and Tyler. He'd promised a show, and he was not one to disappoint.

"C'mon, dude," Richard said. He maneuvered right into Dean's path, because that was mutually assured destruction if Dean tried to simply bowl him over and Richard was pretty sure he'd recover quicker, and if Dean was dumb enough to do something like that Richard would have to kick his teeth in out of self defense. "Hold up a sec. Just wanna ask you something."

This was the part where they maybe both pretended they didn't know how this was gonna turn out. That was part of the game. Kyran had offended Richard, but this could go better or worse depending on his actions now. If he was suitably apologetic, then this could end up like when a cop pulled you over for speeding and made a whole big show of how much trouble you were in but then ended up just giving you a warning. Richard's dad had faced such an experience just a few weeks ago, with Richard riding shotgun, and there'd been something awesome about the experience, in the biblical sense of the word. Richard's dad actually wasn't that much of a tough sort himself, but he got how Richard worked and respected him and could unleash a towering fury when need be. It was fair to say that Richard respected and feared him. Before this dumpy fifty-something Mexican cop with a mustache that made him look like an extra from a '60s cowboy flick, though, Thomas Ormsby had been reduced to scraping, sycophantic "Yes, sir"s and "I'm sorry, sir"s. And still the policeman had dragged it on and on, made it this whole big affair, and all for 45 in a 35 zone.

Richard wondered how hard it was to become a cop.

Anyways, the point was Dean was committing a traffic violation right now, failure to stop, and Richard was gonna figure out if he deserved a stern warning or a ticket or maybe a little bit of summary justice off the books, and Dan and Tyler were gonna be his backup and maybe the jury.

Just wanted to ask him something?

The last time Richard just wanted to ask him something, it became more of a demand than a question. Kyran distinctly recalled Richard asking him if he could "search you, to make sure you aren't lying" when the issue of Richard borrowing a dollar came up during one of their previous encounters.

Bottom line, whenever Richard wanted to ask something, it was never a good sign.

Kyran thought of pedaling faster, but he'd also remembered what happened that last time when he'd chosen to try and walk away from Richard and his gang at school instead of responding. He'd been yanked by his backpack and held still, as Richard did in fact search him, spilling his cough drops with flashy gusto onto the pavement and laughing at him about it, all because Kyran was sick and trying to hide it. He half-thought about running over Richard's foot after that memory, but chose not to.

Besides, Kyran had taken a panoramic view and was well aware of the fact that he was surrounded. Trapped even. Richard's body was positioned in a way where Kyran couldn't move without barging into him or into moving traffic or reversing into the two thugs behind him.

So he turned, braked and gave Richard a flat stare.

"What."

Richard paused for just a second when Dean replied. His tone was off, like maybe for a second he'd forgotten who was the cop here and who was failing to obey the rules of the road. For maybe just a second Richard forgot too, but when he remembered a moment later it was that second of hesitation that made him really, really mad. Dean was not following the script that ended up how he probably hoped. He was instead heading down the path where a certain measure of reeducation was necessary. Really, Richard considered the lessons he sometimes taught his classmates a bit of a public service. He knew how to push them enough for them to learn, without actually causing any sort of real harm. If they realized that randomly acting like assholes to people could get them in trouble, then they'd perhaps be spared the less tender attentions of someone truly nasty.

"Just wanted to ask you about the math homework," Richard said. "I forgot to copy it down, was thinking I could get the questions and maybe a couple answers if you're down."

Richard was lying, of course; he'd actually done his math for the day. The thing was, his request would work in one of two ways, both to his advantage. Either Dean would agree, which would mean he'd have to open his pack and dig out his book, in the process giving Richard an advantageous position to dictate the flow of the interaction, or he'd refuse, and that would be a blatant case of resisting arrest. Richard was good at figuring out these situations where he won either way, and he was good at playing nice when it suited him. Heck, if people played nice back, he didn't give them shit. It was just when guys like Dean copped an attitude too big for their britches that Richard had to react how he sometimes reacted. Really, once that became common knowledge, he'd've thought more people would've grown a little respect. But no, here Dean was pissing him off, and in total honesty there was basically no chance for this to end without a bit of pain now.

Richard cocked an eyebrow at Tyler, who gave him a nod. Dan and Tyler knew where this was heading. When Richard promised, he made sure to deliver.

Yeah right.

Kyran already knew where this was going, but he did not have much of a choice, did he.

For a minute, he considered making a run for it. Ultimately, he shrugged then unseated himself from the bike, cautiously, and began to pull his backpack to his front.

Despite his exterior, Kyran's heart had already made a run for it.

"Thanks," Richard grunted. He didn't really worry too much about sounding convincing. Dean hadn't said a word, so what courtesy could Richard possibly owe him? The guy was bringing his pack around, but doing it in the bitchiest way possible, so really it was the worst of both worlds. He sure was earning what was about to happen here. This, Richard decided with some awareness that it wasn't precisely true, had been a totally avoidable situation for Dean. He'd made bad decisions, however, and now he was going to have to own them.

"Lemme help you with that." Richard reached out took hold of Dean's bag as well, tugging it towards himself gently. A split second later, however, he reversed the momentum of his arm, pushing the pack backwards with great force, straight at Dean's chest, using its weight to bolster the momentum of his shove.

"Oops."

The force unexpected, the heft of his own bag betrayed him. The momentum of it assisted in sending Kyran reeling.

He was sent crashing, toppling over the bike, with it and the bag landing on top of him. His backpack smashed onto the side of his face, the other side, on the pavement with a dull thud. His arm scraped against a mix of dirt and asphalt. The metal of his own bike flattened his arm, causing a sharp pain through the surface of his skin into what felt like the second layer, or the muscle, yet not puncturing it. His head throbbed for a moment and he thought he couldn't hear. Then there was rising heat, as Kyran pushed the heavy backpack off of his face. The helmet strapped earlier to his bag, had rolled off to his side. Mom was right. He really should have been wearing that.

Kyran Dean's head ached, it hurt, but most of the thoughts of pain was pushed back as he took a look at his bike; wheel still spinning, sides slightly chuffed and dented. Then he could hear again: Laughing. His temperature began to rise some-more and just like that, Kyran had jolted up to his feet, holding his breath, leering and stepping up to Richard, ready to ram his forehead into the other boy's crown or chest plate.

Resisting the urge to do something hasty, Kyran decided to back down at the last moment. What was he thinking? He didn't know how to fight. He was no match for these guys. It was the anger, the head throbbing, the bruising on his arm that was making him think irrationally. But the thought, was too satisfying.

Kyran took a few little steps back and slowly began to lift his bag up and helmet, trying his best to contain the anger and avoid eye contact.

"You're a Dick," he muttered.

Dean did a nice little flop backwards over his bike, with the bag landing dead center on his chest. It was perfect. It was like a really great shot in soccer, except there wasn't any coach around to tell Richard that he had to play nice with the team. In fact, hey, he actually was being a team player right now. He was keeping Dan and Tyler entertained, and he was showing Dean what was what.

And okay, yeah, there'd been a little wriggling moment of total terror when Dean's head bounced off the sidewalk, because Richard was fine shoving the dude around, he'd totally earned that, but Richard had heard of people dying when they hit their heads on the ground and he might've been irritated at Dean but he didn't want to do any actual lasting harm to the guy, much less kill him. But that moment of concern meant he was even angrier when Dean popped back up, clearly with no major damage.

Except, no, Richard had made that assumption too soon. Something had snapped, but it was Dean's pretense of civility. And he went straight for the low blows, because he was at his core an asshole, and not even in a creative fashion, because he was a dumbass, and Richard was really, really tempted to throw caution to the wind and give Dean the all-out brawl he oh-so-obviously wanted. But that wasn't being smart. It wasn't exactly that Richard was a huge fan of delayed gratification, but he walked a fine line at school and suspensions brought down the thunder at home more than he liked. More than that, he'd chosen the oh-wow-what-a-crazy-accident approach for today's undertaking, and if he just jumped on Dean and beat the shit out of him that excuse would evaporate pretty quickly. There were cars going by, minivans and sedans full of kids who were too cool for biking or busing or even walking, and who knew who'd take a look out the window and narc him out to the principal?

So grudging delayed gratification it was. Because, let it be known, calling Richard "Dick" was a serious crime. That went beyond a little lesson in politeness and into the territory where Richard was actually going to have to get revenge, because it was personal now. Dean had always been on Richard's radar, but more as one among many kids who sometimes got uppity. Now, though, he was eagerly claiming the title of special project.

"That's my name, don't wear it out," Richard said just a second too late to feel clever about it. Dan and Tyler laughed, though, and that's what was important. "Anyways, way to be an asshole. You almost pulled me down when you tripped."

That got Tyler wheezing so hard the smoldering cigarette butt dropped from his lip. Richard flashed him a grin, then turned his attention back to Dean.

"I think we're gonna be late, and it looks like you don't want help getting your stuff together, so see you I guess."

He nodded and he and Dan and Tyler got walking towards school, giving Dean his space, but then Richard paused and laid out the kicker.

"I guess I'll just have to hit you up for that math later, then. I'll find you sometime this week."

See, the best part of delayed gratification was when it was the gift that just kept on giving. In this case, Dean could spend the time until they next crossed paths outside the gaze of authority figures sweating the meeting just as much as Richard was anticipating it, and that would make the eventual payoff so much more fulfilling for the both of them.

More taunting, more mocking, more of dick being a dick.

At least he was gone now, Kyran could take solace in that fact, but Richard's parting words had left him uneasy. He was never going to stop was he? Not anytime soon, from the way things sounded. He'd found his plaything and he'd gotten what he wanted out of it and he'd come looking again, eventually.

Kyran stayed back and waited for a while until he was sure that Richard, Bebop and Rocksteady were a fair distance away, before hopping back onto his downed bicycle. He began pedaling more quickly, when he heard the first bell ringing from the direction of the school, followed by the pre-recorded sound of trumpeting bugles, signalling that the pledge allegiance was soon to happen. It always acted as warning for the students to get to class asap.

He couldn't believe that Richard had made him likely for a tardy as well.

8:30 AM

The class looked at him as he worked his way toward his assigned seat; the walk of shame. He always hated this part, which is why he hated to come in tardy, especially on a Monday. Too many stares, too much attention, so much awkward.

"Kyran? What happened?"

"Sorry."

He also hated being put on the spot by the teacher in front of everyone for being late.

"No, I mean what happened to you? You look like a mess."

"Fell off my bike."

"Do you need to go to the nurses office?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

9:00 AM

"You again?"

The school nurse, Ms. Au, inadvertently let out a bellyful laugh as she saw Kyran walk into her office.

Kyran stared.

"Ok, what happened this time?" Ms. Au asked as she pulled out the ice-packs and first aid.

"Fell off my bike."

12:00 PM

After having ice-packs applied to pretty much everywhere, as well as some bandages, Kyran was feeling a little better. Although it was still obvious that Kyran had a rough morning, by the swelling and black and blue discoloration forming on his skin as a result of his unfortunate encounter. He was in the lunch room now, having lunch on the far corner table, independence self-induced. A quiet place to eat and observe.

It was all good, until his eyes locked on to Richard again, on the other end of the cafeteria, a far off and safe distance enough for him. Apparently he'd caught the other boy's eye as well, as Richard suddenly sported a smirk and gave the 'watching you' gesture with his two fingers. Kyran's eyes wandered back to his food, pretending he didn't see, as he began to hurriedly eat his lunch and get out of there.

That was until, a second lunch tray appeared about two feet from his line of sight and placed softly on his same table.

"Hey there, little bro," Elijah said.

Sometimes his friends would stop by his table and sit with him during lunch, but he didn't usually have his second oldest brother show up. Having his 8th grade brother around now, seemed peculiar. Eli had gone to school early that day, like he always did, meeting with his own friends so they could head to school together.

"Gonna get right to it. What happened this morning?"

Shrugs. "Nothing".

"Doesn't look like nothing. I can see your bruises and there's a damn, bump on your head."

"Fell off my bike."

"That's why you should be wearing your gear and helmet, you dork," Eli joked, before getting serious again. "Come on Kyran. I'm your older brother I know something's up, when you get all closed off like this to me too. Tell me the truth."

"Fell off my bike," he repeated. How was that a stretch? Eli knew Kyran would randomly get hurt all the time.

Eli let out an exasperated sigh and then traced Kyran's vision toward where Richard was.

"It was that guy, wasn't it?"

"Don't know what you're talking about," Kyran said as he looked back down at his tray and poked at his mash potatoes.

"Your friend, Cammy said she saw you get shoved, hard, into your bike on their way to school, from her parent's minivan. So don't give me that 'fell off bike' rubbish, Kyran. Look, you want me to do something?" Eli asked.

"Yeah. Stay out of it."

4:00 PM

"Kyran come here. I need to talk to you."

It was his dad - what was he doing home, so early. Didn't he have anything to run at the high school today? Kyran stepped into his dad's work out room, wondering what he wanted. Mr. Dean looked at Kyran, a bit unphased, as if he was expecting to see Kyran in his current state. That was when Kyran knew his dad knew.

Eli, that prick - he'd told him.

"What happened to you, this morning?"

How many times was everyone going to ask him this annoying question?

"Fell off my bike," Kyran reiterated for like the billionth time.

"That's not what you brother said."

"He lied," Kyran said as he began to turn around and leave.

"I don't think your brother is the one lying here, Kyran... Get back in here! This is important son, it sounds like there's some kid picking on you and I don't like it. Was this the first time?"

Kyran's mouth felt dry, he didn't know what to say. This was the exact scenario he wanted to avoid. They were all making a big deal out of it. Now his mom would know and the school might get involved and everyone would look at Kyran like a crybaby, tattletale.

"Didn't think so," his dad stated simply. "Look, son, that boy who shoved you, he's a Bully."

A bully. Kyran hated to admit it, but this was true. He really was being bullied.

"Bullies are just little punks, wannabe tough guys, who want to feel better about themselves, by picking on others, because they have nothing better to do. They like to prey on kids who they think are weak. You're not weak, are you?"

Kyran shook his head.

"Exactly. You're not. You're a Dean. You're my flesh and blood, and I've taught all three of you to be strong. You're in peak condition despite your size. I know you can handle yourself and you have Asher and Elijah on your side. So Kyran, let me ask you this. What is the correct way to handle a bully? Especially one who has misattributed or misidentified a strong person for a weak one?"

The PSA like videos Kyran had seen in class as well as his teachers, always said to let someone know about a bully, never fight ba--

"You kick their ass."

Well, that was different. Totally contrasting advice than what he was used to hearing.

"Look, I won't tell your mom, not yet at least, because I have faith in you. Next time that boy tries to bother you, I need you to stand up for yourself, you understand? A man needs to be tough."

Kyran nodded: "But how?"

"Now, I'm no martial arts master, but I can show you a few things that every real man should know," dad said as he lowered the punching bag.

Friday.

Almost a week had gone by and Kyran had just about forgotten Richard's existence after not seeing the guy for a while. The final bell had rung and Kyran felt pleasantly calm having made it to the weekend. He wouldn't have to deal with any crap for the next two days.

It was after school now, but there was still a very good amount of students still roaming around. Kyran Dean effortlessly glided down the outdoor hallways of his school atop the new skateboard that his friend had just given him earlier in the day as a gift. He rode his way toward the basketball/tennis courts, where he had parked and chained his bicycle, doing a few kick-flips in the process. Fortunately the after-school faculty didn't seem to care enough to bother him.

As he drew nearer to his destination, Kyran came to an abrupt halt, putting his foot on the tail end of his skateboard, pushing the other end up into his hand. He tucked the board under his arm and kept his distance.

Of course this would happen. There they were. Hanging around, right next to the bicycle rack.

Richard hadn't forgotten that he owed Dean, though as the week had gone on he'd lightened up a little bit about it. It was easy to be mad in the moment, and it was easy to stoke that fire back up if he put his mind to it, but calculated outrage just wasn't quite the same. He'd actually have probably let the whole thing drop if Dean had been a little more cowed about it all, or had come around and apologized or something, but he hadn't, which meant Richard had a promise to fulfill before he could go have fun over the weekend. He rounded up Dan and Tyler mostly because he thought they'd get a kick out of it, and then the three of them went and waited around the bikes, because that was a guaranteed victory. It meant Dean had to come right up to them if he wanted his bike; otherwise, he could take a look and run away, but then he'd be stuck walking home from school and would be out a bike over the weekend or have to return to school to pick it up. That level of inconvenience and cowardice was an acceptable payoff, as far as Richard was concerned.

But Dean appeared and made his way towards them and then just sort of stopped. Dan had just been talking about football something while Tyler combed through his backpack for leftover butts. Only Richard noticed the boy's appearance at first. He turned his gaze towards Dean, locked eyes with him, and then raised his shoulders, posing the question: what now?

This was Dean's opportunity to jet. If he didn't, well, Richard would respect that. Dean would still get what he had coming, just, you know, respectfully.

Kyran stood there, for what felt like an eternity, realistically probably only a minute or two. Anxious, unmoving, struggling on a decision for what he was supposed to do. Breath stilted, heart thumping slower, he'd made his choice.

Don't be a wuss.

Skateboard still tucked under one arm, bag strapped over one shoulder, young Kyran made his way over top his bicycle, heart beat rapidly changing from slower to quicker. The voices, the laughing, nothing to do with him, but still it shook him, telling him to turn back, but he didn't. The classmates, other kids hanging around the halls, sidewalks any common places waiting for their friends or their folks, before they depart for the weekend. They were nothing but background, white noise.

It was only a few steps now, for Kyran near his lock, but it felt like a long walk. He'd readied his keys, pretended to pay no heed to the adolescent monsters next to him.

"Hey," Richard said, giving a smile and a cheeky little wave, "Dean, good to see you. How've you been?"

The main purpose of this, of course, was to let Tyler and Dan know what was going on. Because Dean had found his guts and came their way to retrieve his bike. Richard gave the boy a quick glance, saw his tense posture. There were a lot of witnesses here, which was unfortunate but also gave Richard an excuse not to destroy Dean too completely. He could just shove the guy around a bit and then let him take the bike and go, and in that way Richard would save face and Dean would be rewarded for manning up, though in all likelihood he wouldn't realize it in the moment and Richard would have to track him down and impart gratitude at some later stage.

"I never did get that math from you," Richard added.

His posture was loose, casual. Some sixth grade girl in the background glanced their way, then her eyes widened and she turned and hurried off. It was good to be known.

Yeah, whatever, okay. Whatever. That apathy had to be an act. Richard decided that would be how he knew he'd done what was needed. When Dean was no longer pretending he was far too cool for the whole situation, Richard would consider their business concluded. The terms of the engagement had now been laid out. All that remained was the inevitable execution.

The boy was fiddling with his bike chain, like maybe if he just powered through like nothing was happening nothing actually would happen. That might have worked on grizzly bears or whatever—mountain lions?—but Richard wasn't one of those. Really, what this did was give him time to glance over, lock eyes first with Dan and then with Tyler, give a big old grin, and plan his angle of attack.

There were a lot of options. He could reach in and grab the lock and hold it shut, but that would mean reaching all the way past Dean and would leave Richard in an awkward position. He could shove Dean, but if the boy didn't see it coming that wouldn't be particularly fulfilling, and also Richard hadn't quite forgotten the scare he'd gotten last time. He could grab Dean by the collar of his shirt and demand his attention, which had some decent appeal. But Dean was also carrying a skateboard under his arm, and so what Richard actually ended up doing was taking advantage of the boy's focus on freeing his bicycle to just reach in and pluck that skateboard out of Dean's grasp.

Yeah, that worked. That would get his attention.

"Hey, cool," Richard said, holding the skateboard up and turning it around to examine it. "What's this?"
