((Kristina "Kris" Hartmann: Restart))

Another day at the skate park, it was the only place you were guaranteed to find Kris unless something conspired to prevent her making it. Yesterday had been rain delayed, New Jersey weather regularly conspired to make sure she couldn't skate. Getting rained out, snowed under or having skate park to become part ice rink. Not that Kris had anything against ice rinks, but she came to the skate park to actually skate. No weather issues today though, the sun beat far above their heads trying to cook them from the sky as the heat reflected off the concrete floor and cooked them from below. It was probably what a roast ham felt like as it sat in the oven.

She skidded to a halt and sat down on a low section of wall, watching the rest of the inhabitants of the park continue with their lives. One of them kick-flipped off a rail but the board didn't quite get the rotation it needed and its rider was left to crash to the ground.

Kris winced, she'd been there.

Her phone was out in her hand so Kris decided to snap a couple quick shots of the skate park in action. Nothing major, general landscapes. Whether they ended up on her Instagram account or instead sat clogging the memory of her phone until she swept it would be decided later once she got home. If they didn't offer anything eye-catching or interesting they would be resigned to deletion and the memory of the moment would be gone forever. Lost, only to be held in the mind of those with who it was significant, to be looked back on with melancholy or rose-tinted glasses, whichever was more applicable. A moment unimportant to one could be life-changing to another. She could even have captured that moment perfectly in time never to know.

Reality returned when another, younger kid bailed and his board rolled into her foot, with a delayed smile she passed it back and watched him re-join his friends. They were making fun of him probably, mocking some part of his form or landing or both. She thought about getting them in a photo but decided against it. A little too creeper. She dropped her board down and looked at the rail where the other rider had bailed. She had something she wanted to try.

-----

A little while later Kris was sat on a bench, feet resting on her board, phone in one hand, water bottle in the other. Modern breakthroughs that prevented her physical death and her social one. The second one in a much more critical condition than the first. She'd already managed to win the life lottery so she figured she needed to try and make the effort to keep engaged with it. Her thumbing swiping up, down, left and right across the screen as she kept track of feeds that told her so much but so little while simultaneously delivering videos of cats being scared by cucumbers with a disturbing efficiency.

The modern world, advanced yet pointless. Able to contact everyone but never actually doing so. Hell of a life to lead. She smiled to herself and took a drink. She liked it though.

((Scarlett McAfee continued from Jumpin' Jive))

Scarlett would not have normally made her way through the skate park, not that she didn't like to talk to the skaters there. Quite the opposite actually. She had just wanted to stroll around. She would have been hanging out with one of her friends but they were all pretty much busy. Expect for her by the sounds of it. It really did kind of suck that she couldn't talk to any of her friends as she didn't want to disturb or pester them. She knew her limits and how much space that people needed. She had been there herself with her father when he would invade her privacy without her permission and how he could always embarrass her about it.

She let out a perplexed sigh. She really shouldn't judge her own father for it though. She had done the same things as well so she shouldn't think that she was better than him. He was just a concerned and a bit overprotective parent to her. She was thankful to him. Really, she was!

As she was walking with her hands in her jacket's pockets; Scarlett couldn't help but noticed a girl from her school sitting on a bench and she was tempted to go over and make conversation with her. But what if the girl, Kris, if she remembered correctly, didn't want to talk to her? What if she didn't want the company?

Scarlett shook her head a little. She shouldn't be overthinking this. Just say hi and then be on your way, Scarlett. Or if she wants you to stay, then you got what you want to do in the first place, Scarlett.

Scarlett took one of her hands out of her pocket and she raised it up in a greeting manner. "Hey there, Kris! What's up?" She said purely with a mild smile on her face and she stood just beside the bench.

((Sebastien Bellamy continued from Study Buddies))

Ah, the great outdoors. The concrete jungle. Sebastien had forgotten to put on sunscreen that morning and he could feel the tips of his ears already burning in the sun.

He wasn't much for physical activity most of the time, but he liked to get out and around every so often so his parents wouldn't worry. Denton might have faded from its former glory, but there was still a lot around the area that you could appreciate looking at. He wouldn't get lost so long as he didn't venture too far out of his neighborhood, so he had allowed himself to wander without much direction and ended up at the skate park.

Though he had never really attempted skateboarding, Sebastien had some fond memories of witnessing Erik's brief foray into that world. He was pretty sure Erik's old skateboard was still in the garage, untouched for years at this point. It was a sport he regarded with about equal parts admiration at the skill it took and wariness over the frequency of broken bones, concussions, and other injuries that abounded. Skateboarders and the like were adrenaline junkies, as far as Sebastien was concerned, and after a while of watching them he would always get nervous that he was about to witness an accident.

He might not have lingered in the area thanks to that, but he caught sight of Scarlett and Kris, and, more importantly, the slight bit of shade that the bench was resting in. He didn't deliberate for long before detouring from his previous beeline past the park and made for the shade.

"Hey," he greeted the girls, keeping his hands in his pockets and enough distance that it would be clear he was more after the location than the company. Not to be rude, of course, just enough distance so that his sudden arrival wouldn't be weird.

Her head jerked up at the greeting. The spell the of the screen that had overtaken her temporarily broken by an intruder into her life. Curly light brown hair gave her a good guess who the girl was. Scarlett McAfee. Kris knew her name but the rest of the girls life and personality was a mystery. Kris may have known it once. The information being passed to her during a brief meeting or through a friend but it was gone now. Her knowledge of her own class embarrassingly small. Social connections not things she made easily if at all. It wasn't because she didn't like her classmates, she had just never gotten to know them. Her life was skateboarding and art. The rest of her life was devoted to the rest of what people needed to survive. Socialization with anyone other than her close circle of friends didn't really enter into her head.

A disservice to everyone else it was true. She should have tried harder to care. It was part of why she had the reputation she did. Not that it bothered her but she knew that people thought of her as the weird skateboarding girl who never seemed to listen. It was probably harder on her friends than her; but she had a chance to maybe change that. She didn't know Scarlett well but still she raised a hand and gave a small smile in greeting. All the correct actions and gestures with none of the feelings attached.

"Hey."

She saw someone else approaching from behind Scarlett. Another person bringing with them more opportunities to succeed or fail at the game of social interaction. It's intricacies still not fully understood by the greatest minds in the world. In the end all of it meaningless as despite all the small things people did they'd always be remembered for one or two things.

She raised a hand to greet the newcomer, whose name was Sebastien.

"Hey."

Looking between the two Kris wondered whether they'd go back to their friends on their phones and pass on details of the meeting or if it wouldn't even be remembered by the time it was finished. Not that it mattered.

"What's up with you guys?"

Scarlett was happy to see that they had more company. The more the merrier. She actually briefly knew Sebastien Bellamy a little. She didn't know him that well other than he was friends with Simon Leroy who had a big ego at times about things that he would be wrong about. But she wasn't going to comment on Sebastien's friend right now. She could feel rude if she said anything bad straight away to him. This was a better opportunity for her to socialise more with others and hopefully grow a closer connection with them.

She couldn't help but smile as they all said 'hey' to each other. It felt so calming and normal to her. It was the best opener for a conversation. She had to get the ball rolling as Kris asked a question. She had a good idea where to start.

She rubbed the back of her head with her hand and she tapped her foot out of instinct. "Nothing much. I just thought that it would be nice to take a stroll around here, you know." She said simply, shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly. "I thought it would be cool to see what people were up to here. I like watching other people having fun. I'm also curious to try out skating myself sometime. I like to lean something new and having the time of my life."

She turned her hand to Sebastien, curious about him being here too. "What about you, Sebastien? What are you doing here?" She asked politely.

"Just going for a walk. Forgot about the sun," Sebastien said truthfully. Maybe it made him sound a little dense when put like that, but hey - it was more or less the truth, and a little self-deprecation usually went a long way. People were used to him acting a bit high and mighty, rightfully or not, so something like admitting that he could be forgetful just like everybody else sometimes caught them off-guard.

Sebastien glanced in the direction of the other skaters and tried not to cringe when one seemed liable to fall. He didn't, and Sebastien was able to safely look away, though he was still aware of the noise off to the side.

"Skating is kinda... dangerous. I guess a lot of things are, but I just think of the time my brother tried to learn to skateboard. I didn't go so well."

This is how one makes small talk with the humans, yes? The corner of Sebastien's mouth twitched in response to his own silent joke. Maybe internal self-deprecation went a little further than saying it out loud sometimes.

They both spoke in turn, nothing was truly said however. Typical of a conversation in its opening stanza. People were afraid to commit to anything until they felt they knew where the conversation was going. A way to avoid embarrassment and awkwardness for what it was worth in the long run.

Sebastien mentioned something about how skating was dangerous, which brought a small smile out across Kris' lips. In terms of danger skating was about on the same level as riding in a car. People did want to think about that though it was too scary a thought that something as mundane as driving a care was as potentially deadly as skateboarding. Everyone died in the end anyway so what did it matter how you went about it. In the meantime he had said something about the weather so Kris decided to give him a reply. Engage with the small talk and ease them all into the conversation until everyone was comfortable.

"Everyone does until it's out in force." She said as she absentmindedly span her phone around in her hand. "Me and the sun have never properly got on, for more obvious reasons." Mainly her pale complexion as a result of her heritage but Kris assumed the joke would land without her hammering that point home. At least that was how that type of joke worked.

Meanwhile Scarlett had spoken of trying out skating. That was something Kris could offer true interest in.

"It's worth trying it, you get a feeling of true freedom. You don't get many chances to experience something like that so it's a feeling that worth all the time and pain it takes to get those moments when you really capture it." She stopped spinning the phone and shrugged a small non-committal shrug. "But that's just what I think about it, don't know if everyone feels the same way."

She stopped speaking and looked out over the skatepark, watching as some hit a grind and then leapt off the rail with a kickflip. It was a well-practiced and clean motion. One practiced over hundreds of repetitions. Soon they would move on to something more difficult or complex, like life.

Turning her attention back to Scarlett and Sebastien, waiting for their respective responses.
