The conversation buzzed around Dougie's head like a drunken fly, wounded and looking to bed down. It zigged at Zoe's response - nonchalant, awkward - and zagged when Anzu spat fire at her, in such a way that had him reminded - again - of Jewel kneeling on the hard stage floor, and Erik - the now deceased Erik - approaching them. That hadn't ended in violence, but had delayed and detracted.

Dougie shifted slightly, moving to face Michael more than Zoe, keeping his eyes locked at the other boy as the conversation searched for a place to land, continuing its slow descent. Something about this whole thing felt... weird, unnatural. They all knew the score, so to speak, with a killer who was fast approaching double digits within their midst and the third day of the game approaching. They all knew that to trust was a slow thing, a hard thing. The way Anzu was alone and upset had him think that maybe she'd lost, too - like he had - and that the group thing hadn't worked out so well.

The time to approach people under the banner of friendship seemed long since gone, fleeing with the announcement that Jewel had slain her fifth, sixth, seventh victim. So why would two people - on the same team, no less - come strolling on up?

The fly landed, and Dougie suddenly didn't know what to do with his hands. Zoe and Anzu had beef, and Zoe was playing it cool. He'd seen the theatrics pulled with Jewel, seen the same sort of brush-off, but who knew what was broiling beneath the surface, or what she had planned.

But Zoe had brought backup.

He shifted back, still wordless, and stepped fully in front of Anzu, his knuckles white on the bat.

"Anzu," Dougie said, his voice soft, shaking slightly. His knees felt weak, he couldn't get enough air, all he saw in front of him were threats, people who had succumbed to the game and were using it as justification to settle whatever score they had.

"Anzu, stand up. Leave."

He tried to make it sound forceful, but the plea found its way into the words.

Dougie didn't look convinced that we're here to help, hell he looked more convinced than ever that we're up to nothing good.

We are, but that's not the point, fucker's supposed to believe us, how did it end up like this?

Dougie stepped in front of Anzu, telling her to leave, trying to play hero.

While he's busy getting Anzu out of here, not letting this opportunity pass.

"Now Michael!"

Zoe ran at Dougie trying to tackle him, ramming her shoulder right into his chest, it didn't have the desired effect of knocking him over, but it got him to stumble for a bit before he sent the bat right into her thigh.

"Ah, fuck!"

Even though Michael thought that Anzu and Dougie were falling for his and Zoe’s trick, he was not surprised when it turned out that the exact opposite was true.

Dougie stood in front of Anzu, telling her that she should leave; Zoe, in response, rushed towards Dougie and attacked him. While the attacked seemed to be successful, making Dougie stumble for a bit; Dougie counterattacked, and sent the bat into her leg. She shouted her displeasure.

At this point, Michael was the only one who was willing and in a position where he could help Zoe. He didn’t want to harm any of the people he knew, especially those who went to the same school as him; but Zoe at this point was the only person stopping Michael from dying at this point in time. He wanted to live, but he didn’t want the blood of someone else, someone he knew on his hands.

However, so long as the blood was on someone else’s hands, he supposed that he do what he needed to win.

Michael rushed towards Dougie and attempted to grab the bat. If that was successful, he would pull it to the side, so that it couldn’t hurt Zoe.

Words flew by, meaningless, meaningless words. Dougie made a grand, also meaningless gesture, stepping in front of Anzu as if to shield her, as if she needed shielding. Pleading for her to leave. Who the fuck was he to tell her what to do? Who the fuck was he to care? Before Anzu could properly retort, the situation suddenly shifted into an explosion of violence.

Both Zoe and Michael lunged at Dougie, charging into him, making a grab at his bat. They had both seemed to have forgotten Anzu entirely, of course. Dougie was the giant, Dougie had the bat. What reason would Anzu have to even interfere, to do anything but use the opportunity to get the fuck out?

If things had been different, if there had been anything left, Anzu would have scrambled away without a second thought. But now? She couldn't just let this little bitch and her shrimp of a friend attack one of the very few tolerable people Anzu knew.

Dougie's bat connected with Zoe's thigh, and Anzu saw her opening. With a primal scream of rage she charged, slamming into Zoe with her full weight. A knee to the stomach later and the girl was down on the ground with Anzu's hands grasping at her neck. "Wrong fucking move." She growled as she tightened her grip.

Anzu suddenly sprang to life, Slamming into her as hard as she could, before Zoe knew it she was on the ground, Anzu’s hands around her throat, attempting to choke her. Michael was too busy with Dougie to help, Zoe tried forcing herself up, but Anzu's grip tightened around her neck.

Desperation started setting in for Zoe. “If she takes me out now, that would leave Michael with these two, can’t let that happen.” She went for the leg, hoping to get Anzu's grip to lessen, it did for a bit, taking the opportunity; she quickly stood up and slugged Anzu as hard as she could.

Zoe fell backwards on the boardwalk; coughing and wheezing for air, her thigh throbbing from the hit she took from Dougie. Just gotta catch my breath, then I'll pay her back!

((This post contains assumptions of character actions without the input of the handlers involved. Should any of the handlers in question (dmboogie, Yugikun) find offense or wish to have the actions altered, feel free to do so.))

It's funny, the way that life goes sometimes.

It was like when you tried to leave the house and couldn't find your keys, scrambling and running around your house in a panic, searching your coat, jeans pocket, shirtsleeves of the button-down you wore last night, the locations of your search increasingly ridiculous and increasingly bizarre - coffee pot? Baking cupboard? Would you have put them in the dog food? - and all the while you feel like an idiot for searching, truly dumb for losing them in the first place. It's a protracted period of time wherein there's nobody but you and your dumb, forgetful self, and the two of you don't get along all to well.

But when you find the keys - usually in the most obvious place, that's when you felt at your dumbest. That's when you could happily have hit yourself in the head with a hammer because holy shit, what the fuck were you thinking?

As Michael's grip tightened around the bat and the smaller boy yanked at it, Dougie saw the parallels, but failed to extract the humour in them.

Because he had gone two days surrounded by cameras and murder and announcements crying out how monstrous his classmates were, and only here - only now - did the full weight of what he was expected to do to survive hit him.

Suddenly, grabbed at the bat with both hands - one on the handle, the other near the end of it - and shifted his stance so that Michael's arm needed to twist slightly in order to maintain control. With a grunt, Dougie pulled backwards, straining against the opposing grip, giving Michael a workout in order to keep the bat in his position.

Then, just as abruptly - as a thud signified body and bone landing on damp wood - Dougie let go.

Hoping that the sudden lack of resistance coupled with the slick surface of the dock would do its job on Michael, Dougie turned to Anzu and Zoey, glimpsed tangled limbs, random noises -

Zoey managing to gain some space -

Dougie managed to stumble over towards where the two girls were fighting, moving to grab Anzu around the waist. Hoping the girl wouldn't squirm her way free, he heaved, looking to hoist her off her feet with his larger frame and two arms around her waist.

"Enough!" he barked, through the struggle of holding Anzu back.

((sorry for shitty post quality, I have to avoid inactivity and I'm on a 3DS so))

Michael struggled.

He was fighting Dougie for the bat, and he, as the much more muscular and stronger individual, was making Michael fight for it. He was twisting the bat, moving Michael into odd positions just so that he could keep holding on. Consequences would follow if he let go, and it was taking all of his power to make sure that didn't happen.

Michael was pulling back when, all of a sudden, Dougie let go of the bat.

He reeled backwards, had to fall on one knee to make sure that he didn't fall off the boardwalk. He felt exhausted, could barely hold the bat, until all of a sudden, Dougie turned his back on him to help Anzu.

Michael saw his opportunity.

He stood up, clutched the bat in his hands, and rushed towards Dougie, hoping that it could do some damage.

He was right behind him at this point, ready to attack, he raised the bat, and

no

He saw Dougie working on the school project with him, he saw Dougie on the sportfields, helping his team. He saw Lily, hoping that she could find Dougie before she died.

He couldn't do it.

He couldn't kill a fellow classmate.

So he didn't. He lowered the bat, and didn't attack. He made sure Zoe could see him, and he signalled a direction to go.

Then he ran, back to the Bull Craps Casino.

For just one moment, Zoe was the root cause of all the evils inflicted upon Anzu in recent days, the murderer of Valerie and Caroline, the embodiment of the strife that separated Anzu from Sarah and Ashley.

For just one moment, Anzu was doing her damnedest to choke the life out of her, desperately wanting to see Zoe gasping for air, tears streaming from her eyes, in the most excruciating pain possible-

But then Zoe struck back and was free, socking Anzu right in the face and knocking her glasses off. Anzu reeled as she released her grip, wondering how the fuck it had come to her wanting to throttle another human being; and she would have likely collapsed backwards if it wasn't for the arms that suddenly grabbed her around the waist, hoisting her away.

Anzu blindly struggled, convinced that the other shrimp of a boy had somehow gotten a hold of her; before catching a glimpse of both Dougie's face and Michael, bat in hand, fleeing the scene. Zoe soon followed suit. Anzu ceased her struggling.

Once both of their assailants were out of sight, Dougie released Anzu, who immediately spun around and glared at him. She was honestly unsure how she felt. Furious that Dougie had stepped in? Grateful that he had stopped her from going any further? She settled for asking "Why the hell did you grab me? Fuck, why the hell did you try to shield me in the first place?"

Getting up was disorienting for Zoe and the feeling of bile in her throat was making it all worse, looking over at Anzu she saw Dougie holding her up , looked like she was struggling against him, it took everything Zoe had to not walk over to Anzu and pay her back in full for being choked.

Michael had the bat now, Dougie had given it up to help Anzu. It looked like he was about to hit Dougie with it, But he didn't do it, he gave Zoe a signal and ran off to the casino. Why he didn't take the shot, Zoe didn't know, whatever the reason she would find out later, they had gotten what they came for, she ran after him in the direction of the Casino.

As if they were shy and overtaxed, the hands that had once gripped Anzu and pulled her away from danger - Zoey's or her own, he wasn't sure - shot into his pockets, curling into fists as she faced him. Thinking that eye contact was somehow too much in this moment, he looked at his boots, nodded to her questions - outrage in her voice - as Zoey and Michael made off with his only form of protection.

That's the second potential murderer he let run away. Second and third.

"Because..." Dougie started, pausing to gather his breath before realizing that that was the sentence, "because."

He looked out to the frozen, frothy ocean, frowned to himself, then turned around, scratched at his neck. He walked away with his neck burning, ears feeling hot.

Stopped.

"I'd like to think that not everyone has... succumbed, to this," he said over his shoulder, stubbornly refusing to look at her.

"You've got a lot of anger, I guess. I think - maybe it'd be best if you used it to not... be them. Don't let it - them - decide who... you're being."

He nodded - once - to himself, and then walked faster, hoping that the ocean had swallowed up that little... whatever that had been. He was the last person on this entire resort that should be dispensing personal advice to angry little kids.

So, once again, Dougie left with no direction, no impact, and no answers.

Theme of the day.

Dougie said his piece and left, sounding like a fucking self-help guru. Good riddance. Had he really felt it so necessary to give Anzu the oh-so valuable advice "hey, don't turn into a murdering asshole?" Who the fuck did he think she was, needing to be told-

She flashed back to her hands around Zoe's neck, blinded by rage.

Goddammit. He had a point.

What the hell had happened to her? Caroline was... Caroline was dead, and nothing would ever be okay, but did that mean that Anzu had to lose herself, too? She'd been weak, falling into denial. She'd been weak, letting her anger take control.

Because if she did that, the audience won. Anzu had already given them quite a show. She could see them now, laughing amongst themselves, saying "It's always the quiet ones, isn't it?" The same people who had applauded when Ashley shot Caroline. Happy little groups were always boring, weren't they?

Anzu didn't know what the hell she was going to do next. She had no long-term goals now, no endgame. She shivered. First priority had to be to get back inside. Find shelter again. She crouched down for a second to retrieve her glasses, thankfully still intact.

She set off into the night.
