((Jewel Evans continued from Story on the Radio))

Jewel at first intended to return to the daycare center, because she knew it would be unoccupied and suspected that others would take this into account, leaving it as an attractive location for the cowardly or opportunistic. As she approached, however, she remembered Yagmur and how he had snuck up from behind, and she instead kept walking. Past the daycare center and the condos lay the casino, all bright colors and garish hues, and Jewel moved instead towards it. Her mouth formed a smile, despite the chill. Her new clothes were not anywhere close to as warm as what she'd started in, but with the day bringing greater ambient heat she felt about the same.

She stopped a short distance away and watched as a boy in a huge hat and poncho stood for a time and then made his way inside. She could tell he'd already gotten into the spirit of things, maybe more than most of the others she'd thus far encountered, and this piqued her interest enough for her to move closer. Perhaps he was simply dressing for warmth—unlike what the girls were usually provided, his outfit had appeared fairly bulky—but Jewel found it more probable he was putting on a show.

While watching SOTF, she'd always had mixed feelings about the costumes. It was good to see what everyone got, and there was a lot of creativity that went into their construction. They allowed the kids to shape their images, take on new identities for themselves and create striking effects if properly considered. At the same time, so many contestants could be crassly obvious in their pandering.

She looked into the building, having moved to the door in a series of loping strides, glancing to both sides all the time in case of ambush. She stood to left of the door, peering in, blinking and squinting into the dimmer light, and the corners of her lips turned upwards as she saw what awaited her.

The four were all from the other school, like all but one of her victims so far. Three boys and one girl, one girl decked out in regalia fitting for a ruler. The story she could supply was all that she needed: they were playing at something, a whole group crafting their own little reality out of costumes and camaraderie, and Jewel was in costume too, so like back at the cabaret she could enter the stage.

"Hey." She stepped inside, lips upturned, axe-gun held in her hands, stun baton jutting awkwardly from the pocket of the coat. The ringing was very quiet now, so much so that she had forgotten it until this moment. Her heart was quiet for now. That might well soon change.

"What's going on here?" she asked. "Mind if I come in?"

"AnArchy?" said Jewel lightly. "Small world. One of your classmates just said I should shoot you."

She laughed.

She'd walked into this trainwreck discussion slightly unsure but now she was getting a better handle. There were four of them from the other school and nobody she recognized. She discounted the two who first answered her question immediately; they were cuing her in to conflict in the ranks but took only passing interest in her it seemed, while the other boy, who was a little handsome and much more vocal, was getting close. He'd stopped outside of her reach, at least, so fortunately she didn't have to shoot him as a precaution against what had happened last night repeating itself.

But they—the boy and the so-called queen, whose tone Jewel did not like and who was making Jewel consider doing Genni a solid—wanted her name. She could have lied, and probably that was what her mentor would be presently shrieking in her ear to do, and there was after all no reason to run a good trick dry and boring through repetition, but at the same time names held power and Jewel's more than most. It was after getting five kills that Zach had died in part by shouting his own name.

So she said, "I'm Jewel."

She smiled more broadly and made sure that her gun was steady. It was hard to hold it straight for long sometimes; the blade dragged the whole weapon downward through its added weight. She considered, briefly, chaining her words with a shot to punctuate the introduction, perhaps into one of the spares to the side, but decided that would be ostentatious.

"I'd love to help you plan," she continued, "but I'm not sure I trust you enough to disarm."

The corners of Jewel's mouth turned down. She moved the gun into line, pointing it now more directly at the boy who was closest to her. He was moving a lot, and that made Jewel wary. Her eyes flicked between the other three. The spares showed not a sign between them of becoming a threat; she would and could not forget them, but they were not yet problems. The so-called queen was the one attempting to command all attention now. She spoke firmly, and perhaps once or under other circumstances Jewel would have considered listening to her.

AnArchy dangled the promise of redemption, but that was not Jewel's path now. The alternative, leaving, held similarly little appeal. Jewel had just arrived, had not yet even begun to figure out this little cadre. There was no reason for her to bow to their will. She still held her gun.

The forward boy was the target upon which Jewel's aim was fixed, because he was closest and yet still a few feet farther away than she had yet managed to land a shot—the girl could have been on the other side of the resort for all the confidence Jewel had in her chances of hitting her. Her attention, however, could span the gap and more. The boy talked sense and temperance. The girl spoke in ultimatums. It was, thus, her to whom Jewel addressed her initial reply.

"Neither sounds good to me," Jewel said. "Go fish."

The ringing in her head was picking up again, merging with the words of those around her, making it harder to parse the meanings and forcing her to focus. This AnArchy seemed off to Jewel, and she wondered whether that was a development of their predicament or not. She wondered at the girl's ability to get these others to follow her, and it then came to her that perhaps this was a hostage situation instead of a consenting group. Such things were uncommon but not unknown in SOTF. The two along the wall could have been her Colins, but they would be of lesser utility; Jewel's interest in whether or not they were executed was purely academic.

She wiggled the gun, in doing so bringing emphasis to it and her other hand up to steady it. Her shoulders were bunched, tense. She tried to listen, to hear if there was anyone behind her, but the ringing made it very difficult and she chose to keep her focus ahead rather than jump at imagined shadows.

"I don't know any of you," she continued, now circling around to what the boy had said. "Being who I am, you must understand my reservations about disarming. You may have good reasons to try something."

She took a half step forward, gaze flicking queen-front boy-first spare-second, then back.

"No offense."

Three people made a triangle. Five made far too many variables to track. The pattern was too obvious; Jewel had established her cycle of attention and the boy she had followed first noticed and took advantage. She caught from the corner of her eye the flash of something metal thrown her way, and it could have been a grenade or an arrow but was actually only a knife. The voice at the same time informed her of the name of the boy before her: Shawn. As the knife smacked into her shoulder, hitting awkwardly with more hilt and edge than point and throwing off her grip and aim, she wondered whether this Shawn could have been like that other Shawn she'd discounted once.

Shawn opened fire on her.

Too many variables. Too much to track, between the ringing drowned out now by the echoes of reports and the collection of people in front and to the sides of her and this room, this building, already too busy and stimulating. She had not seen the gun. She had not expected it. He'd hidden his hand. He hadn't given her a warning. He wasn't out of bullets. The first went far wide and shattered something behind her, but the second shot was so close she thought for a moment that she had been hit. In fact, her backpack truly had been; it hung loose and slightly out of alignment with her core, and she was not facing him perfectly. Jewel was so surprised that she nearly froze, nearly choked under pressure and let him just keep shooting until finally he was carried by luck or improved his aim by tracking off prior shots.

But for all that Jewel had been thrown off by the knife, for all that her shoulder now ached and her pulse thumped loud and physical as the gunfire, she held the gun before her still and was close, still close and with an aim much more steadied and considered than Shawn's. So she pulled the trigger and answered fire with fire.

Screaming and shouting and blood and ringing and thumping and confusion. The gun dropped from the boy's hands and he dropped to the ground, and Jewel went down on one knee at about the same time. While the situation had become more simple with the removal of one of its players, the actions of all those around were hard to predict, harder perhaps in the face of grief and anger. A knife and a gun were out of the picture, thrown and dropped, but what else might they have? Four people meant at least two more possible surprises.

But that could wait as slowly Jewel edged towards the gun that had slipped from her victim's fingers. She knew her weapon held a single round only, but maybe no one else did and maybe it wouldn't matter if she could have the other pistol before they organized any sort of reprisal. AnArchy seemed distraught and the two boys to the side were more in Jewel's awareness than before but still seemed hesitant, willing to take initiative only to let others take initiative, and it was enough to give her some room.

Her palm burned and her shoulder stung and she moved almost slowly and casually towards the dropped gun, keeping her own weapon up and in front of her to ward the others away with its lie of threat.

Jewel's fingers wrapped around the handle of the pistol. She had at first thought to grab it and get clear, and the shrieking and unaimed shot from AnArchy had only pushed that idea further to the fore, but then something had changed. As Jewel had closed in on her prize, the boy she hadn't really thought anything of—the one who was not the one she had followed or the one she had killed—moved forward to AnArchy and instead of assisting her challenged her, making a grab for her gun. So the two of them struggled as Jewel retrieved the forgotten pistol, and she tried to understand, to track them. It was easier now. With only the living three to keep her focus on, and with the one who threw the knife at her working so hard to be unobtrusive, she could follow the fight, the tug of war over the rifle and the moment the sword came into play, the light cuts and the droplets of blood spattering blade and floor.

But it still did not make sense. These were, she thought, friends. At the least they were companions. Now they were turning on each other, seemingly ready to fight to the death, and Jewel stood to the side forgotten. She let her backpack fall from her left shoulder, which still stung and ached a little, and she stuffed her old gun into the pocket of her coat opposite the stun baton, and she unzipped her pack, thinking to put her new acquisition away if it would not be needed to stay safe. Her ears rung and her pulse pounded and these were things she had become nearly used to now, and she could have turned and walked away and probably would have done so unchallenged.

It felt wrong.

Jewel narrowed her eyes and the corners of her lips quirked up as the two clashed, and when AnArchy landed her blow on the boy's chest, sending him stumbling and staggering away from her, his back fell easily into the sights. Jewel did not know this gun in the way she had come to be acquainted with her more archaic weapon, but the general theory remained the same. She held the weapon in both hands and adjusted her stance and for an instant considered shifting her aim and targeting AnArchy instead, but then she pulled the trigger three times in short succession.

One by one, the people in this room surprised Jewel. They fought her and they fought each other and they proved themselves something more than the bit actors she'd initially taken them for, and she in turn fought back and killed them until finally she found herself on the losing end, the gun plucked so easily from her hands and turned on her and only the boy's haste to fire and his prone position keeping her safe. He was a spare no more. The triangle had solidified, and Jewel was the focus of its ire.

She knew that the pistol that had been stolen from her had been fired six times since her entrance, maybe more before but better not to assume. She did not know the make; typical capacity for a handgun ran about eight to seventeen bullets if she recalled correctly. This was not useful information; the range was too wide to make anything of.

Jewel had time enough to jump backwards and backpedal a few steps further, seeking to be as hard a target as she could for any further shots as AnArchy shouted and threatened and then surprisingly offered a ceasefire. Jewel could perhaps have spat it back in her face. The girl's aim was unsure. The boy's position was weak. She had no bullets, but the axe blade had seen her through before and besides, they didn't know her ammunition situation. She held the stun baton in reserve.

If she were watching this, on the couch with Coleen and totally divorced from the proceedings, she might have wanted to see how a fight played out. Coming out on top one against four was something special. That was Jared and his grenade. Quadrakill.

"Alright," said Jewel. She backed up a step. Her hands fell to her side. Her ears still rang. It was oddly peaceful. The two boys bled on the ground, closer now to AnArchy than to Jewel. Another step brought her further towards the door. One more, and she was at the threshold. Her backpack still hung awkwardly from her shoulder, half open. She reached her left hand inside, nice and slow and not so threatening, and withdrew one of the two remaining boxes containing headsets. She could imagine her mentor's frustration, and smiled as she dropped the box to the ground and lightly shoved it towards the two with her foot.

"Looks like you've made all kinds of enemies," Jewel said to AnArchy with a nod at the second boy to die. "I'd pick my friends carefully if I were you. Merry Christmas."

She nodded at the corpse, at the box, winked to the boy who'd taken the gun from her, then stepped backwards and out the door, shivering a bit more as the chill hit her again. As she darted away from the Casino, the pounding finally began to quiet.
