Lucia didn’t keep her eyes off of Austin as he spoke, his words barely sinking in. He said he didn’t want to fight, he said he was scared, and his sniffling supported his words. But the remote was still in his hands; he still had access to the button that controlled her fate. Until Austin released it, put in the table or the floor or wherever, she couldn’t relax. Lucia didn’t want to fire the gun again. But if Austin tried anything... there didn’t appear to be many other options.

After an eternity, Austin sat down, placing the remote on the table beside him. Lucia kept still for a moment, then stepped forwards and attempted to control her breathing. Long, shaky breath in. Long, shaky breath out. The gun was still clenched tight in her right hand.

Austin seemed to be just as terrified as Lucia was. Just as lost, confused and scared as everyone who had been chosen, no doubt. Maybe Riley and Lukas had felt the same way. There was no telling how anyone would react in a situation like this.

“I... I don’t know...” A couple short strands of hair had wandered in front of her vision. She made no effort to brush them aside, eyes still flitting from Austin to anything else in the room.

“I... I woke up i-in that room... and h-heard them fight... but I d-do not know why... I... I just...”

Now it was Lucia’s turn to sniffle.

“I p-panicked... I d-don’t want to die...”

"It's okay," said Austin. He sniffled yet again and brought his right hand up to rub his nose. This took his hand far from the remote. He then scratched his right eyebrow. His hand returned to his side. It now lay against his leg rather than on the table.

"It's okay. I don't want to die either. None of us do. But we can at least try to make it so maybe we don't have to. We just have to keep cool. No harm done here, but we've gotta make sure to keep that record going."

The room was big. There were windows behind Austin and across from him also. Nobody was outside the windows. Except for their words, and the way the chair creaked as he shifted, it was silent. People had once eaten where Austin sat. They would eat there in the future. The businesses would thrive again. There would not have been so many things left were nobody ever to return. He could see snow on the ground through the windows.

"A lot of people will panic at first," he said. "That's how these things start, I think."

Austin was moving his hand as he spoke. Closer to the remote, further away, closer, further, towards his face, back to the table. Lucia could feel her grip tightening round the handle of the gun, so hard her hand began to shake. Austin’s words were almost a backdrop to the real focus in the room; the weapon on the table. Finally, Austin’s hand moved down to lie against his leg. Lucia’s hand continued to shake.

Austin was telling her to be calm, that everything that had happened inside the diner was now in the past. Her body language may have said otherwise, but Lucia was trying to stay calm inside. She was trying to clear her mind, counting from one to ten over and over, sometimes in English, sometimes in Italian. More often than not she slipped up, though, countless other thoughts invading her brain instead. Fight or flight, do or die, kill or be killed...

Lucia wanted to stay calm, but the feeling of panic that had set in after she’d burst through the bathroom door was still nestled inside. She couldn’t do it. Not with the remote still in the room. Not with Austin in the vicinity.

She needed to find someone she could trust, and Austin wasn’t that person. She didn’t know what he would do next, and didn’t trust him enough to be certain that he wouldn’t do anything rash. Hypocritical to be sure. She had threatened to fire at him, after all.

Lucia trusted herself about as much as Austin right about now, though.

“Okay... okay, yes. I think y-you are right. I must... c-cannot...”

Lucia looked out of the windows of the diner, out at the snow covered ground and buildings. It would be freezing out there. Inside, though, she was suffocating.

“I... I think I need s-some fresh air...”

"That sounds like a very good idea. I could use a little air myself."

Austin stood up. He did this slowly and he did it in one fluid motion. He straightened the left cuff of his coat. It had ridden up on his arm a bit. Then he brushed the front of his coat. Sometimes loose hairs or dust would collect there, though none had at the moment. Outside looked cold. When he had walked here, it had been chilly. Lucia was wearing a skirt. Austin glanced down at her feet. She wore sandals.

He thought that she would not want to stand outside for long.

His backpack was still on his back. He had not removed it at any point. It was heavy with his belongings. His school pack had always been the same. At the start of his second semester of eighth grade, his backpack had broken. The strap had snapped over his right shoulder. He had been carrying too many textbooks. He had stumbled and he had tried to catch himself. He had failed. This had been on a gravel path. He had pitched forward, and his hands had been cut up by the gravel. He had plucked the little stones from his hand. He had watched the blood well and drip. He had known that the strap was old and frayed, but he had done nothing about it.

Austin glanced between the doors out of the room. Lucia would be heading towards one for her breather.

((Lily Ashburg continued from First Impressions))

As they approached the restaurant area ahead, Lily felt her anxiety rise yet again. It was the same every time they approached a potentially populated area. Her stomach would clench, her pulse would quicken. She'd feel the same wave of cold nausea rush through her system.

They'd been through a couple other buildings, and she was still no closer to finding Dougie. All she could do was keep telling herself that he would be in the next one. She would find him soon. She had to.

She didn't mind traveling with Michael and Valerie, although her feelings about them were constantly changing. On one hand, it was comforting to have companions. She had two people with her now that she knew she could trust. On the other hand, it was a bit too comforting for her at times. Lily hadn't said much to either of them since they'd started walking. She hoped that they'd just assume that this was her way of dealing with stress.

Her real reason for distancing herself from them was the knowledge that they weren't all going to make it out of the show alive. For all her efforts not to think about it, that was a fact that she couldn't completely ignore. She didn't know how, or when, but at some point in the next few days all three of them were going to die. She hated herself for it, but she simply didn't want to deal with any more pain than necessary. The time for making friends was long gone. All that Michael and Valerie could be to her now were allies. Temporary allies, at that.

As they'd walked, however, she couldn't stop herself wondering about them. A couple times, she'd been on the verge of asking them what they'd planned to do after graduation, what their favorite subjects had been, or even what their favorite foods were. Every time she had kept her mouth shut, but that didn't stop her from wondering.

When they got to the door, Lily raised her stupid pink bat in her right hand, took a deep breath, and opened it.

Inside were two people. Neither was Dougie.

((Michael Robinson continued from First Impressions))

The group hadn't had any luck. They hadn't found any teammates or anything that could be used as a good weapon. Just empty buildings. Michael wasn't optimistic about the diner, but he had to keep searching. He had to find his real teammates before the other teams found each other and started eliminating the competition.

Michael was standing right behind Lily as she opened the door. There were two people already inside the diner. Michael immediately noticed three things about them. First, he didn't recognize them at all. Second, neither of them were wearing scarlet or violet bandannas. Third, one of them was holding a gun.

As far as Michael was concerned, those were three reasons to get the hell out of there.

"We should just go," he whispered "We don't have any reason to talk to them."

Lucia turned to look briefly at Austin. Some part of her had hoped that he would rather stay inside for a moment. That would have opened up a lot more possibilities for her. She could have run off, for instance, although seeing as she hadn’t even checked to see if she had a map or anything, which might not have been a wise decision. What she would certainly have been able to do was have some time to herself, and attempt to get her thoughts straight. That was not something Lucia could do with Austin right by her, still with that remote.

A thought struck her. The remote wasn’t glued to Austin. He could leave it here, inside, where it could do no damage. Then, at least one threat would be out of the way.

“A-alright... just, please... leave the control on the table...”

Lucia caught a glimpse of the outside world again, through the windows of the diner. Just as cold-looking as it had been a few seconds ago. Lucia preferred warm weather, preferred it a lot more. She felt calmer and at peace with the sun’s rays beating down on her. Winter just made her shivery and numb. But with every second, the diner felt more and more cramped, and the outside seemed more and more inviting.

Lucia turned to leave, and saw that they were no longer alone.

For a moment, she didn’t move, too stunned to react. She didn’t recognise the blonde girl in front of her, or the short guy. She didn’t even recall passing them in the corridors of school. Who were these people? What were they doing here? And what was the girl planning on doing with that baseball bat?

The questions popped into her head thick and fast, and Lucia felt her pulse racing again. These two were complete enigmas. They were unfamiliar, they were blocking the door, and they had a weapon. Auto-pilot switched on again, as Lucia shakily raised her gun again.

“Dr-drop it... the bat... drop the bat... and m-move...”

Valerie had trudged along, behind the other two. They had already tried a few other buildings, and found nothing. She'd hoped that this time it would be different.

She hoped that this time, she'd see her friends.

She been a short distance from the other two, to the side of the door, when they opened it. She was in the process of following them in, but they didn't move. Instead, Valerie heard movement from inside, and then Michael saying that they should leave.

Valerie's heart caught in her throat. She gripped the pogo stick tighter.

Austin was happy to leave the remote. It was a concession he could easily make. It was not a concession at all. His power over Lucia came from their situation. It came from their comparative reactions. He opened his mouth to agree. His lips began to move.

The door opened. Austin's mouth closed. His hand raised from his leg. There were at least two people. They did not address him. They did not address Lucia. She was stupid. She raised the gun. He thought he would kill her soon.

"Now now," said Austin. He held the remote again. It was in his right hand. His right hand was by his side. His grip on the remote was loose. "That's not a good welcome. Surely they can't be a danger with just a bat, can they? It looks like plastic to me."

He then spoke to the newcomers. His voice was louder as he did so.

"Don't worry," he said. "We're just a little tense."

((Skipping for death related purposes, sorry))

Lucia kept the gun aimed at the doorway to the diner. A third person had turned up behind the other two, just as unidentifiable, just as dangerous. Lucia’s hand moved to point the gun at her, still shaking even with both hands to steady her aim. With jerky movements, Lucia shifted where the gun was pointing, moving between each of the three. She didn’t feel ready or prepared, but the threat staring them right in the face had to work as some sort of deterrent.

Then Austin had to speak up, attempting to placate the newcomers. He labelled the bat as being made of plastic. He didn’t see it as a threat. Lucia couldn’t believe just how much he was underestimating the situation. Plastic or not, it was still a solid-looking object; with enough power behind it, it’d hurt. Maybe not enough to kill, sure, but enough to distract her, disorient her, make her lose hold of the gun. And that would be Lucia’s death sentence right there.

So Lucia kept the gun trained on the three strangers in the doorway. She turned her head to say something to Austin, she wasn’t even sure what. Something about how she wasn’t going to lower her weapon until she knew she was completely safe. She didn’t want to look away from the new three for too long, just in case.

But Austin had the remote back in her hand, and for a second, Lucia froze. His words didn’t match his actions. He said he didn’t want to fight, he had berated Lucia for raising her gun, and yet he had the key to their demise millimetres from his fingertips. Lucia almost swung the gun round to point at Austin, before aiming it back at the doorway. Panic was in her eyes as she stared round the diner, surrounded by people she couldn’t trust.

Lily was facing a gun. There was a fucking gun pointed at her face. She felt like her stomach had been replaced with a black hole. She thought she was going to pee her pants. She probably looked like she'd just taken a generous dose of crack. Her hand was shaking so much that the bat was quivering. This stupid, flimsy, useless bat that was all that stood between her and a gun.

It was the first time in Lily's life that she'd ever seen a real gun. It was a little smaller than she'd thought it would be, but it still managed to suck her attention away from everything else in the room.

She heard the girl say something. It took her a few seconds to understand what. She wanted Lily to put the bat down and move. Lily's brain, which had temporarily frozen, exploded into action.

The man with the gun is king. It isn't fair, but that's the way it has to be if you want to survive. Her father's words echoed around her head as she desperately tried to figure out what to do. If this had been a robbery, she would have known what to do. Hand over the money, nobody gets hurt. In this situation, though, she was completely lost.

The girl looked almost as terrified as Lily felt. She seemed to be afraid of Lily and her bat. Why? Lily wondered vaguely. What could her stupid little bat possibly do against a gun? This girl had the most power in the room, but she looked like she was completely terrified of everyone else here.

Should Lily hand over the bat? She would be completely defenseless. What if this was a trick? What if this whole nervous wreck thing was just an act? What would happen then? Even though Lily rationally knew that her bat would be completely useless in an actual fight, it was still the only defense she had. If she gave over the bat, she would also be handing over what little sense of empowerment she still had. Maybe that was the point.

Also, move? Move where? The doorway was blocked by Michael and Valerie, and there was no way in hell that Lily was going to move closer to the gun. She was trapped. Lily nervously shifted her weight from one foot to the other, and back again.

Then a boy sitting at a table spoke. Lily hadn't even noticed that he was there. He sounded calm. Lily didn't know if that made her feel better, or more scared. Who the hell could be calm in a situation like this? He seemed to be trying to talk Gun Girl down, telling her that Lily's bat was made of plastic. This wasn't quite true; Lily was pretty sure that it was made of aluminum. It didn't matter, why was she even thinking about this? The boy seemed to be apologizing for Gun Girl's actions.

Lily shifted uncertainly on her feet again. Gun Girl kept moving her weapon around between the four of them. Lily wished she'd just hold it still. Against her will, a scene from "Pulp Fiction" floated to the front of her mind.

“Oh man, I shot Marvin in the face.”
“Why the FUCK'D you do that?”
“I didn't mean to do it, it was an accident.”
“Oh man, I seen some crazy-ass shit in my time, but this-”
“Chill out man, I told you it was an accident! You probably—you went over a bump or somethin'.”
“This car ain't hit no motherfuckin' bump!”
“Hey look man, I didn't mean to shoot the son of a bitch, the gun went off. I don't know why!”

If Gun Girl didn't calm down soon, at least one of them was going to end up like Marvin.

Taking two deep, shaky breaths, Lily slowly lowered the bat while still keeping it clutched tightly in her hand.

The girl raised her gun at them. This had gone the worst way possible.

Michael took a step back. The girl said something, but Michael wasn't listening. He couldn't think clearly, not with that gun pointed at them.

It occurred to him that maybe he should have ran away. Instead he just stood there, eyes transfixed on the gun.

"Lucia," said Austin, "I said we're tense. So chill. Nobody has to get hurt, but if you don't sit your ass down and stop waving that gun around, it'll be you."

He raised the remote as he said this. He pointed it straight at her. She believed it was deadly. She had calmed down once under duress.

The three people outside were all clumped. A bullet into that group might hit one of them. None of them was visibly armed. They had made no move to flee. Lucia had already attacked one group. Austin thought that merited some motivation to not repeat her actions.

Lucia saw the girl holding the bat lower her weapon; still holding it tight, but much less of a threat now. She saw the two other strangers standing frozen in the doorway, blocking her only means of escape. She saw all this and yet none of it registered in her head.

The only thing she could think of was that Austin had just threatened her. Not even an implied threat; it was clear, simple to understand. If she did something that Austin didn’t like, he’d press the button, and that would be that.

And now her attention was drawn away from the trio in the doorway and completely fixed on Austin. They were no longer threats; two of them didn’t even seem to have weapons, and the third had lowered hers, after all. Austin, on the other hand, still had the remote control in his hand, and now it was pointed straight at Lucia. There was no doubt in her mind that he’d press it if he got the chance. Even if they were on opposite sides of the resort, he could still press the button.

The gun was now pointed at Austin, shaking hands making little difference to her aim at this short range. Lucia tried to say something, but all that came out of her mouth was a strangled “I-“. The gunshot drowned out everything else.

Austin did not expect Lucia to shoot.

She was stupid. He had determined this some time ago. He had assumed her smart enough to realize that his reactions would be fast. Her hands were shaking. While her gun was generally pointed at his center of mass, the erratic movement of her wrists was enough that the bullet's trajectory instead brought it through his face.

Austin's finger's convulsed as the bullet blew through his left eye socket and ricocheted around inside his skull. If he had been telling the truth, Lucia would have probably died as his fingers pressed buttons. Since he wasn't, he collapsed to the ground in a heap. Nothing happened to her collar.

The chair he had been near toppled. It was caught by his foot, knocking it over. He did not die instantly. The difference between when he died and it happening immediately was immaterial.
