((Kyle Williams continued from The Hate of Men Will Pass))

They were here. The place where it all began. Entering the town felt so unreal. Like Kyle was there a lifetime ago. He stood by the edge of town, taking it all in. "Do you remember where we started? Where you, Carlyle, Josie, and I came together. It was an age ago, a long bloody fight ensued afterward. And now the end is in sight. You, me, Dylan, and Audrey. It'll be up to us to put a stop to all this."

He entered the town, making his way to one of the cabins. It was unmistakeable. He had come across the origin again. He smiled faintly. "Come on, we'll plan inside. We may have time to rest a little as well."

The end was here. He would show them all. Talk is cheap General. Let's see your precious program survive this.

((Louisa Bloom continued from The Hate of Men Will Pass))

Louisa stood close to Kyle as they looked over the town. It was still way too surreal to be in this situation. The next several hours would finally bring the end of this terrible game, and there was no way to predict what would happen. Dylan had killed seven people, but she could collapse from blood loss at any second. Audrey hasn't killed anyone, and after having only one encounter with her, Louisa couldn't tell if Audrey would start playing at now that she was in the finals. Everything was really hazy.

"Yeah, let's end this. I just hope we don't have to be too violent or extreme here," Louisa said in response to Kyle's proclamation.

It was strange. It had been three days since Louisa was last in the town, but it felt ages ago. That day she met Carlyle, Josie, and Kyle here had been one of the worst days of her life. Clara shot her, Gwen put a blade to her throat, and Louisa saw her first death. Before she knew it, they were at the cabin she saw the trio near on the first day.

"Alright, let's get inside. It'd be good to have a base."

Louisa quickly looked around. She didn't see Audrey or Dylan anywhere, but they needed to get inside before they were spotted. They didn't need their base compromised.

((Dylan Walker continued from Two Foot Wide and Six Foot Deep.))

Dylan had left everything behind. All she had brought with her was the Ruger Blackhawk and the five bullets she had for it. Everything else was useless to her, now. And she would never have made it all the way back to the town weighed down by garbage.

The side of her head just felt heavy. Kind of soggy. But there were no more bandages she could use. And every now and again she'd feel new, sharp pains in her shoulder. Leaving the meathook in had probably been a mistake... but it didn't matter now. Nothing did except her and the three people still in the way. Even Smiley's stupid insults about her being a coward were just... annoyances now. Like what mosquito bites were to stab wounds.

Audrey was out there. First person she'd met in the game. They're shared a terse greeting and she'd bolted once Maxim turned up. Smart. If she'd done that, maybe things would have turned out differently. But no kills. No fights. Audrey was a coward without the backstabbing past to make her dangerous.

Kyle hadn't killed either, but Dylan didn't know much about him besides that. She'd seen him once. With Louisa, Carlyle and Amanda. And she'd offered them Wheaties. But he was sided with Louisa. An alliance that would make it harder to kill than if they were running around by themselves.

Louisa was the danger here. The one who had killed. The one who had a gun. The girl who'd been so kind to Dylan after she'd been shot by Maxim, and who had given her time to run when Clara burst into the clearing. Too kind. Dylan had to forget about that kindness. Anything to make killing her less difficult.

Dylan reached the outskirts of the town, clutching her gun tightly. She slumped against the wall of the nearest hut, breathing heavily. She was exhausted. She was sure that if the announcement had been put off even just an hour longer it might have been too much. But she could keep going. Just for a little longer.

So she rested against the wall, her gun raised, and looked for any signs of movement.

((Audrey McKee continued from Remnants))

A purpose. A plan.

Those were the things she had, and the announcement didn't shake her. The military jerk could say what he wanted. He was goading them to end it, sparking the fire for the final fight. There was a reason for all of this, beyond the words that he said. That was what mattered.

The buildings of the town were almost familiar by now. It hadn't been long ago that she'd been here, with Frank. Then back again, with Ashley and Becky. They were dead now, mostly by Dylan's hand. And the claim that Dylan and Frank had been allies... She didn't understand. Perhaps she would never understand.

Frank never stopped surprising her, even after death.

Audrey shook her head slightly, clearing it of the thoughts and the slight headache that threatened to make itself known.

She had to stay alert. She hadn't come this far to fail now.

Moving quietly, she made her way down the streets, ducking from one house to another, her eyes scanning for the people that she needed to find.

"So, knowing who's left, I have to get this out of the way." Kyle glanced outside to check the area before turning his attention to Louisa. "I'm going to kill Dylan. She's gone on long enough without getting what she deserves. Plus, she killed Shawn." As for Audrey... well he had other plans for her.

But Louisa needed to be clear this was what he planned to do. It was the time for justice, for vengeance, for bloody execution of a murderer. Now was the time for the close. The board cleared of most pieces, and the enemy armies desperately trying for a checkmate. But the game was not going to end that way. Not if the two of them had their way.

"We'll deal with Audrey if she's not gunned down by Dylan. And then," he turned to glance at a camera. "We work out between ourselves what happens next. Louisa, are you ready for this? Is there any lingering doubt in your mind? Because we can't afford that right now."

He glanced down at his weapons. Tase Dylan, put her down with the pitchfork. But what about Audrey? She wasn't a murderer. But she wasn't on their side. Still on the fence probably.

Cross that bridge when he came to it, he decided.

Louisa was all ready to go inside the cabin and barricade the door when Kyle had to make something clear. He told her he was going to kill Dylan, partly to perform karmic vengeance on her, and partly to avenge Shawn. Louisa could understand where he was coming from. Dylan was probably their biggest threat right now, and the most likely danger to their plan. Audrey was still a wildcard, so Dylan was probably their main concern.

Kyle asked if Louisa was certain about what they were going to do and if she had any doubts remaining. Louisa quickly looked around the area. She wanted to agree with Kyle, tell him she was fine and that she had no issues with what was about to happen. However, she couldn't shake off the idea that someone was going to come around and attack them. She quickly turned back to Kyle.

"Let's talk inside," Louisa whispered to Kyle. "Sorry, but I'd feel much safer when we're no longer in the open. Please, let's just get inside already."

Maybe it was a way to avoid talking about the subject, maybe it was just fear over the current situation. Louisa didn't care. She'd feel safer knowing they were hidden from any dangerous eyes.

As Dylan caught her breath, she peered around the corner of her hut. About the sixth time she stuck her head out, she saw a flash of movement and quickly hid again. Just seeing someone had made her heartbeat rocket up like crazy. Dylan took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. Then she peeked out again.

Audrey. Moving down the street. Dylan ducked back again in case Audrey turned around.

She could shoot her right now. Audrey hadn't been holding a gun, and only a moron would be keeping guns in their bags and not their hands now. Sure, it'd be cowardly. But everyone knew that's what she was now.

And then there'd be one down. And two to go. Two that were allied. With one gun, possibly two. The last time Dylan had fought two on one, she'd gotten a meathook lodged in her shoulder. And they hadn't even had guns.

Dylan stayed hidden for a few moments, thinking the situation over. Then she quietly left the shelter of the house and pointed her gun directly at Audrey's back.

“Don't move. Don't shout.” She'd meant to sound authoritative. Intimidating. But the order came out croaky.

It was always a surprise.

The attack, that was - Angel swinging at her like a madman, the quiet voice behind her, telling her that maybe she'd really messed up this time, that she'd lost it all from one misstep. Dylan's voice. Hard to not recognize when there were only three others left.

Audrey didn't move and didn't shout, despite the sweating of her palms and the racing of her heart.

She had to follow her plan, though. She had to try. When she spoke, she tried to keep the fear out of her voice.

"I've been looking for you."

"Alright," He said as they made their way inside. "let's talk. We need a plan for how this is going down." The way things were, they had to plan for two possibilities. Eitheir Dylan would need to be dealt with followed shortly by Audrey, or Audrey would not make trouble and they could go on unhindered.

Really, it all hinged on Audrey. But again, cross that bridge when he came to it. He looked around the room. It looked vastly different from what he remembered. "Dylan is beyond saving at this point, that isn't in question. What is in question is how we deal with her? I'm not asking you to fight if you don't want to, but I think it would be best to team up and take her."

He shrugged his shoulders. "Of course, there's Audrey. Honestly I'd feel better is she were with us. Maybe we could try and bring her in? What do you think?"

Louisa followed Kyle inside the cabin, moving further into the cabin. They were in a long forgotten room, with minimal furniture that had been left to time and small insects. Louisa turned her attention back to Kyle, who was continuing with his idea on how to progress with the next stage.

Kyle claimed that Dylan was beyond saving, and that they might have to work together to take her down. Louisa felt a bit uneasy about that. Her last violent encounter was with Brian, and although she won, it still was quite a colossal calamity. She probably wouldn't have the same luck if she had to seriously fight Dylan.

Kyle also mentioned trying to bring Audrey into their team. Louisa did find that idea a little more agreeable. She didn't know if Audrey had any prior encounters with Dylan, but she did have an amicable conversation with her and Kyle a few hours ago, so it was likely it could still be that way.

"Well, it's definitely complicated," Louisa said to Kyle.

"I agree that Dylan is likely to be a problem. I don't like the idea of killing her, but I guess if it means keeping you, me, and maybe Audrey alive a little longer, I might take it. It's just..."

Louisa felt herself beginning to tear up. She looked down and quickly rubbed her eyes. There wasn't any way to get out of this situation without fighting, was there?

"...sorry. Never mind."

Louisa quickly gulped and looked back at Kyle

"As for Audrey, yeah, if she'll take us, I say we do it."

Louisa tightened her grip on the Beretta.

"But we should make sure this cabin is safe first."

Dylan kept the gun as steady as possible, although the barrel quivered despite her efforts.

“Yeah? Can't really say the same, apart from the whole 'you have to die for me to live' thing. But, you know... not in any personal way. Mind you, maybe you can help me. And live a little longer, maybe.”

Although... Dylan wondered why Audrey would want to talk to her anyway. It had to be something that had happened since the game began, or else she would have said more than 'hello' that first day. So... oh, wait, there was only one reason Dylan could think of.

“...You got an issue with one of my kills? Because if not I'm stumped on why you'd want to see me. Oh, you can turn around if you want.”

Her eyes flickered at the words that Dylan spoke, but Audrey didn't say anything back, not until she was sure that the other girl was done talking. For a few seconds, she'd been afraid that a bullet in the brain was all that she was going to get, but it seemed like she'd managed to buy a little more time. Or, perhaps, Dylan had never had intentions of shooting her just yet.

Her heart was still pounding, all the same, as she turned around. Her eyes locked onto Dylan's, and it surprised her a little how long it'd been since she'd seen someone face-to-face.

She'd thought she'd come full circle back at the standing stones, finding Lenny's body there, remembering who she'd once been.

But it was the people that mattered, wasn't it?

Maybe that was half circle, quarter circle. This was full circle; Dylan and her, here.

"It's not that," Audrey said. Maybe it was, a little. Dylan had killed Frank, and they'd been allies, and none of it made sense to her. That wasn't important right now, though, not with a gun pointed at her, not with her plan still unfulfilled. "It's that there are only four people left."

Her gaze didn't waver. "What are you going to do if you win?"

"Right. No sense getting cut down thanks to carelessness. This is the last opportunity we have to come out ahead. It wouldn't do us good to be ambushed." Kyle said as he began searching around. Everything was pretty much exactly as they had left it. The place was still so empty and lifeless. But the memory of what transpired was still fresh in his mind. After all, that was when he met his comrades.

And how quick he had been to assume the worst. To entertain thoughts of abandoning them, or worse. He felt ashamed to have been so foolish, so cowardly. Now was the time to make up for it. Now was the time to avenge fallen friends and strike down merciless foe.

Dylan had her chance. Of this he was certain. On that day, she could have let go of it all. Earn forgiveness. But the lives she took after cemented her fate. He swore he would not allow another to die at her hands. No more bloodshed but that of the guilty.

"We need a battle plan, for defending the area. It looks clear to me, but there are just too many variables. The doorways are one thing, but the windows make it too easy to get in. Maybe we can find some loose boards or planks and prop them up? Each of us cover a door."

He didn't like it. His own suggestions were leaving a bad feeling in his head.

"Or maybe we go offensive, strike first and run back here to recover? I don't know. None of our options seem all that great. Any ideas?"

A battle plan. Louisa found it odd to refer to their plans as such. They were against two teenage girls, not an entire military platoon. "Strategy" was probably a term she could more easily accept. "Strategy" at least allowed them to pursue avenues beyond murder. Louisa began to focus on the "strategy" she and Kyle needed to follow.

"I don't think we should take the offensive," she said. "Especially if it means returning back here. Then our base is compromised and we are in danger of being cornered."

Louisa looked around the room. There was very minimal furnishings around, nothing that could probably cover the windows as well.

"If we are going to hole up here, we need to have a way to leave in case we do get in danger. There has to be at least two entrances in this cabin. We can probably block one door. The windows might be a little more of a problem. They do weaken the amount of space we can move in the cabins. We need to figure out where we can walk without being seen."

Louisa put the Beretta in her cardigan pocket.

"Let's try to bar the front door."

What was she going to do if she won? How would Dylan know? She didn't know what happened to the winners. For all she knew, the winners got shot anyway. Or left in a hole or something. So how was she meant to know? And what did it even matter? Only thing she knew she had to do was what Ash had asked for. Remember what happened, because fuck if anyone else would.

“I'm gonna live. I'll figure out the rest afterwards.”

Dylan kept the gun barrel focused on Audrey, in case it was the 'wrong' answer and Audrey decided to attack. At the same time, her eyes periodically flickered around the town, looking for any signs of Louisa and Kyle. Given Louisa's general attitude, she didn't think Louisa would be actively hunting her. Not right now. Not until she could rationalize that there was no other choice and that she was still a good little anti-patriot who was forced into it.

“Why does it matter? And if it's a philosophical thing, I really don't think this is the time.”
