The bullet fizzed past the rusty tin can topping a fence post and then embedded itself in the wall of the building behind.

Anastasia Flores, standing a few metres from the fence with a rifle at her shoulder frowned, worked the gun's lever, aimed again...

Pop

This time she hit the post itself, the bullet taking out a jagged splinter from the wood. Tas' scowl got a little bit more pronounced. She'd been at this for more than half of her gun's first magazine and had no luck whatsoever. This was hard.

The instructions in her pack had made this seem really straightforward, but...28 rounds per minute? That just seemed like a mocking joke. Tas was getting a little better at working the repeater's lever action, but it was still taking forever. Why couldn't she have just got a gun where you pulled the trigger and the bullets just came out instead of having to screw around with this lever bullshit?

The Colonel (and it had always been 'the Colonel', never 'father'), had loved waxing lyrical about guns and firearms, and what a sharpshooter he had been back in the old days in Mexico... when he actually bothered talking to Tas at all.

Pop

The bullet flew somewhere over the houses. Tas swore.

It took great force of will for Tas not to just hurl the stupid bloody rifle to the floor. She couldn't hit anything! She just couldn't line the fucking gun up properly and the sights didn't work and-

Ana dropped it into the dirt with a thud. And then screamed inarticulately and, from a running start, kicked the fence so hard that one of the rotting posts gave and the whole thing collapsed.

"Puta madre!"

That was one of the only things her dad had ever taught her. Tas had learned Spanish primarily from her mother and the house maid, Celia. It had been mostly a matter of... Tas had got the feeling that they'd felt it was something she didn't so much need to learn as something she should learn. She'd got plenty of warnings not to let on she knew the language... although Tas sure as hell couldn't see where letting it slip would have made things worse for her. The Colonel hadn't really given a damn. Why should he? So far as he was concerned, he was all set. Tas was just an occasionally amusing accident, and seeing her swear was one of the things that had caused him to laugh uproariously.

Fuck him. Fuck them. Fuck this stupid coño game.

It felt better to swear in that way. Stronger. Added emphasis by the fact the 'foreign' language was a taboo. Well screw them. Tas had spent half her life getting her heritage drilled into her, everyone around her beating it into the ground. Past time to get worried about offending anyone. What were they gonna do, kick her out of the Program for being too Mexican?

Program...

Tas sat down, suddenly and heavily, frustration boiling over into an abrupt burst of... nothingness.

She hadn't expected this. Truly hadn't expected this. It felt like a cruel joke. Every time things were starting to get on track, someone laid dynamite on the rails. She was turning a corner! She hadn't got into a fight since before junior year! Why the hell did this have to happen now, of all times? Program hadn't been on Ana's radar, not once. Announcement Day had been an irritating necessity, but balanced out that it was a little less time spent in a classroom under scrutiny and getting pulled up for imagined offences.

Now though...

Fuck, she was so fucking dead.

[Amanda White, continued from Luck Is For Losers]

Some things just won't go right. Amanda found a somewhat cozy group, heading toward a cozy cabin. But no... something had to go from. Describing the pine stands as a fuckton of trees was more than approciate. It was so bad, they already lost Ashley from their eyes. She was to blame, kind of. After all, she had to move faster than anyone esle. Amanda didn't know much about the Program, but she knew that it is a terrible idea to move at another pace than their own group.

So that's why Amanda is searching for her. After all, they are something like friends now. Unfortunaly, this turned out to be a bad idea too. The thick forest confused Amanda, and it didn't help that she heard someone screaming, yet she had no idea where the sound came from. To summarize, Amanda circled around in the pine stands, unsure where to find Ashley, before somehow ending up in the... town. A place Amanda wanted to avoid at first, but she thought it could be worth a try to check out whether Ashley was in the town or not.

Walking into the town, she began to hear gun shots. Her heart immediately dropped into her guts. Amanda silently scolded herself for not going to the cabin. Fuck Ashley. There was someone with a gun. And this person is already using it. The blonde girl quickly hurried to a wall, trying to make her as small as possible. How could things went even worse for her?

Some angry and foreign words could be heard in the air. There was something itching in her nose.

"...Fuck."

Amanda was by far not someone who liked to swear. She even tried to avoid it at all costs. Meeting a minority, in the program, who may be equipped with a gun, seemed like a good reason for an exception. It didn't matter how many people were actually involved, or what was going on there. All what Amanda could thought off was that there was an angry minority. It stopped. Amanda could hear how a body hit the ground. It didn't sound like a fall, but it wasn't helping Amanda's mental state. Her nose itched even more now, Amanda began to have problems with holding back the sneezer. Curious to see who was the person, Amanda looked where the sounds of ire came from, carefully avoiding to reveal her position behind the cabin.

Anastasia Flores. She was sitting on the cold floor. As far as Amanda could tell, she was alone, but with a gun. Enough for her to convince that it was time to get as far as possi- SHIT.

A not very quiet sneezer escaped Amanda. She freezed in shock. If she moved to hastly now, Anastasia would surely find out her location.

((Maxim Senders continued from Chasing Dreams))

Maxim didn't even realize where he was going. It was as if he was just casually drifting around from place to place, in an attempt to find someone. The pain in his heart was great and the guilt of trying to shoot his friend was heavy. It felt as if he was being weighed down by it. He wanted to be free of it, free of these feelings which weighed him down. He wanted a release and maybe death was the only way he could achieve such a release.

He looked up as he saw many cabins that were progressively growing larger the closer he got to them. Maybe he could find someone there? it was his best option at the moment and he saw no reason for him not to go. Maybe he could find some supplies there. While counter-intuitive towards his aim of finding death, Maxim realized he needed to stay alive. It was as if he had a duty in this game. A duty to play it out and ignite the spark that would eventually allow the game to reach its conclusion. His chance of dying was so high that he felt it was only inevitable that he would find the sweet embrace of the afterlife.

Maxim walked briskly towards the place he assumed was a town, hitching up his gun to ready himself for an ambush. With the many houses that littered the place, it was a prime place to get ambushed easily. He needed to keep up his guard. This game was deadly. He couldn't die yet. He needed to survive a little bit longer and he needed to find the right person. He needed to find his friend, Louisa. He had to apologize to her and make his intentions clear. If he did so, he could die happy and that's all that mattered to him at the moment.

Once he reached the town, Maxim heard the sounds of a gun being fired. Reacting almost immediately, Maxim hitched his gun up and prepared himself for a shoot-out. Moving swiftly, he grew closer to the sounds of the gunfire, hiding behind a house and sightly peering over the corner to check out what was going on.

He saw Tas firing a gun. That was a problem. Tas was a hothead and it looked like she had been doing some target practice. The foreign words being spewed out of Tas's mouth, what he assumed was swear words, made it perfectly clear that she wasn't happy. He couldn't attack her head on. That would be akin to suicide and while death would be nice, he still felt like he had something to do. Bringing the gun close to his chest, he kept on spying on her, trying not to draw attention.

It was then that he heard a sneeze.

A loud sneeze.

He clung to the wall as he waited for Tas to react, if she did. He didn't want to be caught. Not yet. He needed to wait for the right moment. When the moment came, he might get a neat gun out of the deal. The prospect made him feel giddy inside.

Tas was sitting there for quite a while. Longer than was sensible or prudent, most likely, but she just couldn't bring herself to get up - either to move along or to continue with her practice. It was like being winded, and then when you were trying to get your air back, somebody kicked you in the kneecap. There was so much to deal with at once that the entire process got slowed down. Logic told her she wasn't being sensible, and logic was, to be honest, getting the full benefits of Tas's inner death-glare.

It was right, even so. She'd made a lot of noise with that gunfire, and destroying a fence probably wouldn't help matters. Her foot was still tingling from the force of that kick. ...And actually yeah, even if Tas wanted to stay, she'd kind've wrecked the target. Time to go, she supposed.

Ana picked herself up, wincing slightly as the standing sent an odd sensation across the bridge of her foot. Christ... she hoped she hadn't broken anything doing that. It didn't hurt, exactly, but her balance was a little bit off. Standing the rifle back up and shouldering her bag, Tas spent a few moments brushing off the dirt. The gun was old... she had to take better care of it than that, if she wanted it still to work. Even though she hadn't had any luck firing it just yet, that didn't mean she never would. Besides... just having a weapon was kind've reassuring.

Not quite as reassuring as not being here at all, though...

Someone sneezed.

Tas swore in Spanish again and whipped around towards where it had come from before starting to rapidly back pedal. No, no, no, no, she couldn't deal with people right now, not in this game, not at this point, where she couldn't even use her bloody gun to hit the broadside of a barn. Her heart started to yammer madly, temperament dipping from wound up to high anxiety in a matter of seconds. It felt like the organ was trying to make good its escape from her chest via her throat.

Tas swallowed, and hard, trying to inject her voice with confidence.

"Whoever you are, you better back the fuck off, okay? You don't want any of this right now."

Why is it that every time people think that things cannot get worse, exactly this happens?

If I do not die here, I'll die 'cause of this damn cold

Then again, even her mother advised her to wear not a tank top. But of course, she did not listen and ended up in some crazy military project, freezing in a very cold alley and most likely dying by the hands of some angry minority. Panic rose up in Amanda, she did not want to die. When she was in her little group, the delusion of safety and happiness helped her to cope with the Program, but now she was alone. She waited for Anastasia to show up at some corner and shoot the brain straight out of her.

No gunshot. Instead, more foreign words.

Then, Anastasia just told her to go away. Sure, she was not very polite about it, but there was a chance to escape, and Amanda was not in the position to lament. Thus she slowly revealed herself and raised her arm.

"Th...Thanks you! Got a... umm, nice gun there. Better look out for it, or so... Good Luck!"

With her left arm still in the air, she slowly backed away. Once she again vanished behind the cabin's wood, she ran. Wishing her good luck was stupid. Trying to talk about her gun was stupid. It was definetly time to stop using hackneyed phrasings, Amanda just had to remember that in the future. Just as she was about to leave collection of cabins, she noticed something else and stopped abrubtly.

"Maxim?"

He looked weird to Amanda. Not like she had him in memory. She remembered him as the cute guy she was silently crushing on for a few weeks last year. The guy who was so incredibly eager to protect the minorities. A nonsensical activity for Amanda, but his determination was admirable in some aspects. Amanda got the feeling that this was not the boy she knew.

Another dumb mistake. Should have kept running.

Maxim was surprised by Tas's actions. Instead of just shooting the person who sneezed, like he had expected, she just backed away from her, as if scared to encounter anybody. Owing to the fact that she had a gun, he was perplexed by this action. Could it be that she didn't have confidence in shooting someone? Was it something Maxim could use to his advantage in the game? Maybe. At the same time though, he wasn't sure if trying to shoot her was the best course of action either considering the fact that he wasn't the best shooter. He needed to make the most of every shot or else he'd just screw himself over.

It was for that reason that he stayed hidden and watched the scene unfold before him. He didn't feel confident about just running in and shooting at this very moment. While Tas may be hesitant to fire her gun, she still had a gun. He felt that if he were to act confrontational to her, Tas would have no hesitation to cap him right there and then. Then again, her gun didn't look too practical. It looked old, maybe as old or older than his gun for all he knew about history, which was admittedly very little.

As he watched the conversation progress and conclude, he started trying to plan out what he was actually going to do now. From the looks of where the brief conversation was going, it seemed as if it would end soon. He could always attack Amanda, but that might cause Tas to attack him and he didn't know what weapon Amanda had. It could be something like a pistol or something that she had kept hidden from the others. Did Maxim really want to risk that?

As Maxim continued to think about what he was going to do, he heard his name being called out. This snapped him back into reality as he turned his head towards where Amanda was. Oh goddammit Amanda. Maxim chewed his lip and glared at her for blowing his cover. Then again, she really had no reason to not blow his cover. He didn't know her too well, but she was alright. An acquaintance at most, but nothing else more. Now he was stuck in a situation where he was completely taken by surprise.

He stood still for a moment, trying to let his mind catch up to what was happening around him. He didn't really know what to do. However, it seemed that attacking was out of the question. Maybe if he could play it casually and talk briefly to the both of them, he could make a swift exit. He didn't necessarily have to get himself killed yet. He needed to seek closure with Louisa.

"H-hey there Amanda." Maxim stuttered as he tried to give her a friendly smile, clinging tightly to his civil war gun as he did. He did not want to be seen by either of the girls until he felt confident in doing so. It seemed like his plans to get a shiny, new gun courtesy of Tas was going to have to be discarded for now.

"So... Umm... how's your game been?" Maxim asked her, trying to sound casual as he remained glued to the wall. He didn't really know what else to say. He was sort of stuck.

Much to Tas's surprise, the response to her uncertainly-barked out order wasn't derision, or aggressive, but meek reticence. For a brief moment, she wondered whether or not she was being too hasty, but then shut the thought down immediately. No, no she wasn't. Scaring off whoever that was, was a good thing. Making nice now would ruin a good bluff.

Tas still hesitated though. She'd spent a while in the town already, and whilst she couldn't claim to know it like the back of her hand, she knew her way around decently enough. Leaving would mean not knowing what was around the corner. ...then again, this place wasn't safe anymore. The next person who came along might not be so easily intimidated.

Okay, that made this simple, time to back out.

Keeping an eye on the cabin the voice had come from behind, Tas backed her way out of the vicinity. When she felt she'd got far enough, she turned and fled.

What has Amanda been doing? The way Maxim asked her was certainly odd. Like he just wanted to catch up on how Amanda's day was until now. However, he was clearly disturbed by something, or else he wouldn't stutter so much. Amanda wasn't sure what to think of this. It didn't help that she couldn't see what he was holding in his hands. Being uncertain about Maxim, she simply decided to keep this conversation going.

She sniffed before responding. Looks like she was getting a cold.

"Well... I woke up at the lake, then I found Ashley and Jasmine and Aaron. We teamed up, but we kind of got lost, so... now I am here."

Amanda remembered Anastasia. It didn't appear that she followed her, but still, Amanda didn't like the thought of standing in the town when somebody with a gun is near.

"Also, I just met Anastasia. She's angry. And has a gun. You better look out..."

The sentence was suddenly ended. Amanda forgot how she wanted to continue the sentence. She looked at the floor, as if the answer was sitting on her shoes. Ultimately, she concluded that Maxim probably understood what she was saying and raised her head again to look into his face. Politeness required to ask how Maxim was, and Amanda was genuinely curious about his story.

"But what were you doing?"

Maxim partially listened to what Amanda had to say as he began looking around for a way to get out of his predicament. Maxim didn't really care too much about what happened to her. He doubted that she had anything interesting to say in any case. From what he could hear, she hadn't encountered Louisa and right now, that was his main priority.

He kept his gun hidden as he continued to feign listening to Amanda. He pretend to act surprised when he was told that Tas had a gun. He already knew that. He saw her with the gun already, but he didn't say anything. He just wanted to buy more time for a way to get out.

"Me? I'm just looking for Louisa." Maxim quickly spat out as he began to move away from Amanda. "I need to find her as soon as possible. From what you said, I doubt you know anything so I'm going to leave you be. Just keep a lookout for her and if you do find Louisa, tell her Maxim is looking for her, kay?" He continued to say to her quickly as he began to move.

There was no use hanging around here anymore. There was nothing for him here. He didn't know where Tas had gone. All he knew is that he needed to move. He needed to find Louisa.

He needed to say good-bye.

Maxim was searching for someone. Louisa Bloom, the ginger. Amanda wasn't sure what to think of her, she really couldn't stand artsy people. Still, Amanda understood if Maxim wanted to spend his last hours with her, which is why she made a mental note in her head. If she'd find Louisa, Amanda would tell her about Maxim.

"Is good, I'll do it."

She considered waving her arm as a farewell, but Maxim wasn't looking at her anymore, so she didn't do it. Amanda stood in the cold for a while, pondering about whether she should leave too. On the one hand, the beaner girl with the gun, on the other hand, she would have to walk again. Eventually, she decided to take the risk and silently entered the nearest cabin. She doubted that Anastasia would actively search every cabin, if she still was in the town, that is.

The cabin really looked like nobody cleaned this for... it looked like it was this untidy since it existed. Whoever lived here didn't has a big sense for keeping order. Amanda liked that thought. It reminded her of her own room. Sure, it wasn't that dusty, or wet, and there wasn't a hole that somehow resembles a bullet hole in the wall, but still, Amanda felt good in this cabin. She reached a bed, which she promptly dusted off. It wasn't that dirty, much to Amanda's surprise, and now it even looked very cozy. A few seconds passed before Amanda let herself fall on it. Even if she was awake for only a few hours now, she felt immensely tired. It didn't last long until she put her bag on the ground and fell asleep on the bed.

Hours later, the most terrible rendition of "Born in the USA" woke her. It was Amanda's favorite song, even if she had no idea what the lyrics were and it resulted in her being rather grumpy. It took her a few seconds to realize that the guy speaking was telling her who died. Still half asleep, Amanda barely registered who was killed, no, she even didn't fully understood the fact that people have already been murdering each other and after the announcement ended, she fell back to sleep again.

It was dark, but it was the time Amanda woke up again. She lied on the old bed for a while, thinking about nothing. It took a while before she remembered where she was. Program. The place where she was supposed to die. A weird thing. Amanda knew what her fate was, but she wasn't able to grasp the entire meaning of it. Death, it seemed so far away for her.

The girl slowly stood up, took her bag, and left the cabin. It was a beautiful night. Dark, cold and serene. Amanda looked around, now fully awake. She didn't know where to go, she just went into the direction she was facing at that moment.
