"Alright, goddamn, I'll give you your frickin' evidence already!"

Having busily slurped down his bowl of milk (formerly a bowl of cereal), Lenny primed himself for his response to Maxim's...shitfit? He wasn't getting too much of a good vibe from the odd and possibly gay guy, his picture of him being that of a whiner who spent way too much time sweating the small stuff. And shit, if he didn't want to be an American, why did he even live here? Why not get special permission to go to some place where people would actually listen to him yap like an angry puppy? Surely, America didn't want people like him living here!

He had to admit, though, it took balls of brass to talk like that to somebody who could drive him into the ground like a human screwdriver.

"You know my father, right," Lenny started. "Of course you do. Silver Star, chokepoint, little-to-no food, I haven't gone a full week without talking about how much of a badass he is. He led, won, saved men, women and children on a weekly basis from crazy-ass socialists and the like...

...but more often than not, they didn't protect him back. Everywhere he went, he saw his squadmates, his backup, his friends get blown away by mines and grenades and bullets, and not once did any of the people he protected raise a finger to help him and his squad, in return for him helping them not get shot.

They gave their condolences and their prayers, and their thoughts, but when it really, really came down to brass tacks, nowhere to be seen! Nowhere! Out somewhere else! Jeep blows up? No leads! Homemade explosives found? No idea! Private Lester's been cut up and found in a ditch? Who could it be? The Canadians, Irish, Mexicans, Norwegians, no-one cared for them, no-one assisted them, no-one...no-one..."

Lenny's ship came rushing back to Earth, nose first, having been given different coordinates. It gave a few more puffs of gas.

"You know, it's funny," Lenny said, looking blankly into the distance. "Dad didn't really blame them. Said...said they didn't want to sink further into the bullshit than they already had, but you'd think...you'd think..."

He sat up straight and leaned over, brow furrowed in confusion...no, not exactly...frustration? Ah, contem...content...

He was never good with words.

Audrey had tried to break it up, but it was too late. The floodgates had already opened, and the battles had begun.

Needless to say, Maxim had something to say about Lenny's little spiel. And oh boy. He said everything and more she wanted to say right then and there. Racism was kind of ridiculous. Not just in an ethical standpoint, though that was an issue, but in a logical standpoint as well. Someone's race was a ridiculous reason to hate that person. There were a bajillion reasons to hate someone, like if they talked in the theater or killed a bunch of people. Race, where they came from, who their parents were, something they couldn't change if they wanted to? Not a good reason. Add in the ethical issues Maxim addressed, and... yes. Racism was stupid, and a stupid reason to hate another person. Emphasis on person. Not some mythical creature, not some fairytale creature, not some robot, a human being with thoughts and feelings who obviously doesn't like being mistreated in any way.

And then Lenny responded, and she almost slapped her forehead.

The second he mentioned his father, she knew where it was going. And boy, was it a doozy. It descended into some war story about how his father suffered during his time in the military, and how his squad mates had horrible things happen to them. Felicia felt her anger simmer down to... sheer bafflement. She said nothing throughout all this. Felicia had always been told not to interrupt people while they were talking, but there was the detail that she honestly didn't know what to say. There was just... so much.

Once Lenny was finished, she finally found the words to say. She looked at him with bewildered, yet still frustrated eyes.

"I'm... uh... I'm sorry about your dad. It sounds rough. But... just because he suffered doesn't really mean that you can be cruel to someone who had nothing to do with it, you know? They had nothing really to do with all that. It's like..."

She tried to think of a good analogy, but one wasn't surfacing.

"Look. Hating people for something they had no part in is... well, it's stupid!"

Felicia felt herself getting steamed up again. This is what she had to deal with this morning? It was bad enough that she had spent all night working on a project. But first thing in the morning; racism talk and awkward war stories. Well, this day was starting off nicely! She prayed to god the subject would change. Anything. Anything would be a better subject than this.

Audrey put her head in her hands, fully intending to just wait it out until the topic changed. After all, she'd done her best to calm the situation down, but it hadn't worked. Of course, just because she was trying to ignore them didn't mean that she couldn't hear them.

She could stand Maxim's rant, though she didn't really understand most of it. Something about not hating minorities, just because they were different. Audrey guessed that was reasonable, though she was surprised at how strongly Maxim felt about it. She didn't think it was really that big of an issue.

But then, Lenny started going on and on about war experiences; cars blown up, people exploded by mines, soldiers cut up and dumped in ditches...

She was faintly aware that it was supposed to prove some point about racism, but the details of what Lenny was saying stood out to her. Was that really what was happening out there? Audrey had always been sure that America was winning all those wars. Easily, even. Hearing this coming from him, though, she began to have doubts.

And Clark! Sometimes she hated her brother, but he was still her brother, and he was serving in the military right now. She didn't know exactly where he was. She'd frankly never really worried about it. Was he going through this sort of hell that Lenny was describing? Would he?

Audrey resorted to putting her hands over her ears, as if that would block out their noise.

"L-Lenny! Some of us have family in the military!"

He had evidence? Oh he couldn't wait to hear this. Though Maxim had thought he had enough to say, it seemed as if Lenny had something else to say. He had no doubt that it would probably be something extremely stupid, stupid enough to make him slap his forehead in the sheer stupidity of the statement. What justification could be made for racism? What right does someone have to discriminate someone for being a different skin color.

Maxim laughed a little when Lenny thought that he knew who his father was. Of course he didn't. Most people probably would have no idea who he was. Though he may be one of the greatest people in Lenny's life, he was just another person to the world. America didn't care about people. They cared about having the largest and best armies to fight against the "enemy". The mandatory years of service were stupid in his opinion and the fact that they have to be in the army just made him sick.

His jaw dropped in what he said afterwards. Maxim was right. His reasoning was so stupid. Lenny may think that his reasons were sound to him, but it didn't have any relevance whatsoever. He restrained his hand from slapping his forehead, letting Lenny having his say before completely destroying his reasoning afterwards. He had to give him that respect. Some people may think that Maxim was being a lunatic for annoying someone who was around twice his size, but his mind was somewhere else right now.

After Lenny had finished, Maxim let the others had their say. He was going to go into a very, very long rant after this. He was going to go to town with him, whether he liked it or not. His blood was boiling but for some reason, he didn't only feel anger. He felt passion and exhilaration. He felt so alive. It was a feeling he couldn't describe. Maxim was grinning slightly at Lenny, looking really smug. He was ready for this.

"Hey Lenny. I hate to be the one to tell you this, but there's a reason why our armies were stationed there. Do you know what that is?" Maxim asked him condescendingly, leaving a little pause so that Lenny could get a reply in. He didn't really care for his reply though. He had the argument clear in his head.

"Well Lenny." He started again in a condescending voice, treating him like a little child that needed to be explained something. "The army are stationed there to protect the people who live there. You know what protecting means? It means prevent them from getting hurt. Your father and his friends were there to make sure they were safe! They didn't do it for recognition or anything like that! They weren't expecting any aid from the locals! Why would they expect that! It's not something that they should get involved in!" Maxim said aggressively, his restraint gone. He didn't care if people heard him. Why should he be ashamed of expressing his views?

"You can't blame them for something like that! If you do, you're just being shallow and narrow-minded! War is something that no one should have any part in, especially innocent people. What do you expect them to do? They can't do anything! They have lives of their own to live. They can't be devoted to the Army, like what you think they should be. Though I do admit that your father did get in some serious shit, that is no reason to have a vendetta against the entire community of minorities." Maxim exclaimed at Lenny.

"Another thing I have to say Lenny is that no one really cares about your father. Oh he may have done some amazing things, don't get me wrong, but no one really cares about him. America doesn't care about what your father has done, only that there are armies out there that are preventing a so called "threat". Why are they "threats" and is the only way to dispute them through violence and war? What about peace talks and other ways to prevent the loss of lives. Why must we waste lives fighting? Why must we go to war? Why must we be forced by America to be in the military and risk our lives? Doesn't this sound stupid? Doesn't this sound disgusting? Doesn't this sound wrong? Is it just me who thinks this? There has to be a better way. There just has to be." Maxim concluded, now standing up having done so half way through his rant. What he said was his opinions on this issue, an issue that had to be tackled. Why must his mother go to war and risk her life? That just wasn't fair. Not for anyone.

"Those...those bastards!"

"Now, now, calm down son. Remember, these ladies and gentlemen had friends and families to take care of. Might want to think from their point of view before jumping to conclusions."

Lenny thought back to that sweltering summer day, when he'd been confined to yet another hospital bed, locked there by yet another injury. He'd been bored. Unhappy. Dull. Without football or exercise to excite him, he'd asked his father, who'd finished his duties for the day and was there, attentive and at his son's bedside, for some stories about his service.

What he'd heard twisted his stomach, lit a flame in him that took a long time to blow out, taught him about one more reason why the USA was the best country in the world. He'd barely heard his father say that last sentence, that final statement that told him to not hold the behavior of the foreigners against them, to know exactly why they never assisted their father, even after he'd done so much for them. He'd kept that voice clip bolted up in a closet by his own righteous fury, but him and Max screaming at each other had taken a screwdriver to the door, exposed that relic to be researched and picked over. As he thought about what his father said, Lenny heard something from the small man who'd been so brave as to get on his case...

"There has to be a better way. There just has to be."

"Hmm?" Said Lenny. "Oh. Uh, yeah. We...we really need to fix up that...uh...what were you talking about again?"

It continued.

Felicia made a face when Audrey mentioned that some of them had family in the military. That... just made it worse. It was bad enough that there was currently an argument at the table about the military. It was bad enough that she was so worried about her brother. But now they were combined. And now that the topic had come up, it only made it worse. Thanks to Lenny and Audrey, she now had the mental image of Brandon left cut up and lying in a ditch somewhere, and that...

Well, she didn't want to picture it. She always wanted him to be safe and sound, not... like that. A small shudder passed over her.

Maxim went on about the entire point of there being soldiers stationed there was that they were supposed to protect the people who lived there, and there would have been no point for the people they were supposed to protect to help. What exactly were they supposed to do? He continued on saying that it was essentially dumb that America was so obsessed with the military.

Which Felicia agreed with, in a way. It took little observation to realize just how much the military had become... well, for a lack of a better word, "normal".

Lenny didn't seem to get it, though. He didn't even seem to be listening. Felicia bit her lip. He wasn't even trying to listen to the arguments tossed at him!

And suddenly she realized it.

They were probably going to get in trouble soon. Not only was there an argument in the cafeteria, but... it was that kind. Felicia knew that if it went any further, Maxim, and possibly all four of them, could get in trouble. Was it bad that they had to keep quiet sometimes? Certainly, but it wasn't going down a good path for any of them. Plus, things were getting a little heated up, to put it simply. Probably was a good idea to at least loosen the tension a little bit.

That's when Felicia got an idea. It was probably a good idea to break up the argument, as much as she was just as angry at Lenny. And with that, she put it to work.

Felicia stood up, and brushed aside a curly blonde lock, looking at Maxim, then Audrey, then Lenny.

"Excuse me. I was thinking of going down to the vending machines outside, and I was wondering if anyone wanted to come with?"

It was pretty clear what she was trying to do, she knew. But even a moment of the topic being changed would work. Her voice was still pretty low and audibly frustrated, but she tried her hardest to stay casual.

Vending machines? Well, anything that got them away from this conversation was fine in Audrey's book. To be honest, she'd had just about enough of doubts and fears for today, if not the whole week.

"I'll come!" she piped up, almost springing out of her seat. She hoped Maxim and Lenny would agree to this as well. Either of them agreeing was fine, actually. She had a feeling leaving both of them alone at the table might not bode well. Maybe if they came along, they could forget about this whole unpleasantness.

"An early morning snack sounds good," Audrey added. "We can get you guys some candy, if you want."

She hesitated slightly, then took the liberty to drop a hint. "Course, you guys should come along, too. I'm sure it's more interesting than sitting around at this old table."

After a while, Maxim started to slowly come back to his senses. He was so into the rant, he completely forgot he was in school. He could get in some serious trouble for bashing the army and that was something Maxim didn't want to get in trouble for. He calmed himself down as he heard Lenny's reply.

"Of course you didn't listen." Maxim said quietly to himself as he sighed. All his energy was spent in his little tirade and he let out a little yawn while sitting back down on the table. He could feel people's eyes floating over to him, but he shrugged them off. He got used to that shit in middle school.

After hearing Felicia's suggestion and Audrey's agreement with said suggestion, Maxim shook his head as he stood up again, picking up his belongings as he did so.

"Thanks for the offer, but I probably should get going to class soon." Maxim told Audrey and Felicia. That argument really took a lot out of him and even now, Maxim just wanted to get out of there. Before he left, Maxim turned to Lenny.

"You know, it's guys like you that make me wonder why I like guys instead of girls in the first place." He mused to Lenny without thinking, not really realizing what he said. He wasn't really in the right mindset for rational thought at that moment; he was completely exhausted by the entire argument with Lenny.

He really didn't think his reputation could get any worse at this point so there really wasn't anything to lose in coming out. While he used to be content with not vocalizing his views so often, he was now sick of it. Maxim was one of the only people to stick up for the minorities, and that got him a bad reputation throughout the school. He guessed that a lot of people in the school were just like Lenny and though it seemed like a losing battle to continue protecting the minorities, Maxim wasn't going to follow the masses.

"Yea. I'm gay. It's one of the reasons why I rejected you Felicia. Sorry for not telling you that." Maxim said apologetically to Felicia, giving her a sheepish grin before frowning again and turning to every other person in the room.

"If any one of you people has a problem with it, I really don't care. Don't go crying to me about it being "immoral" or any other of that bull. I'm just going to ignore you." He flat out declared to everyone else, not really giving a damn at that moment in time. He really didn't want to have to face school after that entire debacle, but he had to.

"I guess I'll see you in class then Felicia." Maxim whispered to Felicia as he walked past her and out of the room. He was ready for the shitstorm that was going to approach because of today, but he didn't mind. He'd been in shitstorms before and he always came out clean on the other side. Or as clean as he possibly could.

And just like that, Lenny saw Maxim storm off in a huff, and secretly celebrated the fact that his hunch had been justified. Sure, what was supposed to be an easy morning munching on Fruit Loops took a turn for the wild, and sure, he probably looked like a douchebag for shouting at a guy half his size, but if there was a silver lining in all of this, it was that he'd been correct about something! That something being Maxim's preference for men! Ha ha ha! Who was the thick-skulled imbecile now, Emily?!

Still, that was just a silver lining. Lenny's throat was kind of hoarse from all the yelling he'd done at Maxim, and Felicia sounded kind of pissed at him. Ah well, she'd probably forget about it soon as she saw some dude who looked appropriately hot. Maybe he'd try and set up her and Aaron after school, though he kind of doubted Felicia's stone would stop rolling anytime soon.

"Eh, I'll be fine," Lenny said to Audrey, despite his parchment. "I'll just go to the fields. Team's probably almost there anyway."

The last of his words said, Lenny discarded his trash and moseyed through the cafeteria exit.

Audrey sprung at the opportunity, saying she would love to go. That was one person for the count. Now how about the other two? Audrey did offer to get some candy for them, but Maxim declined, saying that class was about to start soon.

That's right, it was, wasn't it? Well, it meant they had to be quick.

Felicia picked up her coffee, her book, and her bag, getting ready to head out.

But what Maxim had to say stopped her in her tracks.

.... Huh.

Did... did Maxim just come out? That was... unexpected, to say the least. Felicia had tried asking him out once, but he simply declined. Felicia respected that, and things went on normally. She didn't have any hard feelings. Was she a little disappointed? Certainly. But you know. But now he pretty much came out to everyone, which took Felicia off guard. Again, not how she expected this conversation to end.

He said goodbye, and Felicia could only wave, put on a smile, and:

"Okay Maxim. See you later."

Well, she was surprised, but frankly, he was still the same guy, right?

She looked at Lenny, wondering if he was going to say something inappropriate about that as well. But he just said that he was going to the field, surprisingly enough. And with that, he left.

And it was just her and Audrey now.

"Well? How about we head over there before class starts?"

It was probably a good idea to pay for whatever Audrey wanted, since she did offer.

Instead of taking her up on the offer, Maxim excused himself, then took the opportunity to tell everyone in the cafeteria he was gay. Then he left, and Lenny left as well.

Audrey blinked.

Maxim being gay... Strange, she thought she would have seen that coming. She thought she knew him well enough; they'd even been talking around the table for a while, and "gay" wasn't exactly something that came up when she thought about him.

Maybe it had been just a well-kept secret.

As for the actual fact itself, Audrey wasn't sure how to feel about it. It wasn't as if it had any real effect on her personally, true, but maybe other people felt differently. Probably not something to tell her dad. She was pretty sure that gays were filed under the same category as minorities and graffiti-spraying punks in his book.

Also, Felicia was still there, and talking.

"Oh, right! Vending machines it is."
