Look at the POOL, Michael, look at the magic in it!!!

((Amelia Lennon continued from Anyone out there?))

For the second time in two days, Amelia woke up in a completely strange and unfamiliar place. Rather than a bed this time though, she was lying on the ground, face down, although to her relief it was on grass, rather than sand and dirt. She didn’t for a moment believe that she was still back at home, however. Amelia could feel the cuts all over her, the weight of the bag on her back and the knife in her pocket. The vision of Tania’s face in her mind, always there.

Amelia managed to lever herself up, with some difficulty, as she felt surprisingly weak. After a couple of attempts, she managed to get into a seated position, both legs outstretched. Glancing around, Amelia noticed two major things. One, her pickaxe was lying nearby, propped up against a cactus. Two, the cacti themselves. They were pretty much literally everywhere, completely surrounding Amelia. She remembered seeing something about a cactus patch on the map. That must have been what happened. I must have left the town and headed for here, then… passed out, I guess.

Before Amelia could contemplate her current situation any more, a familiar screeching sound, and then a familiar southern voice came echoing through the fields of cacti. The announcements. It seemed only moments ago that Amelia had heard the first set. She was more prepared this time, or so she hoped. The Sheriff quickly got down to the list of deaths, and Amelia listened intently.

Rebecca was the first person to have killed. At least she was surviving. Shortly afterwards, Amelia heard Tania’s name getting called out, and mentally prepared herself for what was coming next. The description of what exactly had happened, and the mentioning of her own name, brought the image of Tania’s face back to the forefront of Amelia’s mind again. Clutching her head, Amelia screwed her eyes shut again, forcing the image out of her head, just in time to hear the next name called. Rebecca, again. The victim, this time, was Alex. Alex from theatre, violin playing Alex. Amelia was reminded of how she’d first met the guy, after hearing him play in the auditorium at school. Half-jokingly, she’d asked whether he knew how to play anything by Rage Against the Machine. When he said no, for whatever reason she’d gone off to grab her guitar and play a couple songs. And now he was dead and gone. Amelia felt her eyes begin to well up, but hurriedly wiped them with her sleeve. Crying could wait until later. Crying could wait until it was all over.

Amelia didn’t really listen for a good portion of the announcement, until she heard that Rebecca had killed again. Amelia felt a mixture of feelings at the news. On one hand, it was another classmate dead, and the fact that that was actually happening just made Amelia feel… hollow. On the other hand, another classmate down meant she was one step closer to getting out herself, as was Becky. That one point lead to what Amelia probably would have called Point Addition Number One Part A, if she had been back at school or at home. There was a definite possibility that she and Rebecca would both survive until the very end. What then? What would they do then? And what if it was another of Amelia’s friends, like Katie? Would she be able to kill them?

Amelia was so preoccupied in her own thoughts, she didn’t realise that the announcement had actually finished. She didn’t hear the danger zone locations, so couldn’t panic, and didn’t realise that she’d only just escaped from one in time. Instead, Amelia stretched her arms, and managed to get into a standing position. She felt oddly weak and empty, not just from the previous announcement. It took several seconds for Amelia to realise that she hadn’t had anything to eat since… well, around this time yesterday. Amelia sat back down, removing her bag from her back and opening it, looking through for some food. There were two packets of unrecognisable and unappetising looking meat, as well as some spam, which Amelia knew first hand tasted worse than the other meat looked. Amelia took out a loaf of bread and the tub of cornflakes. I guess this is it, then… God, this is fucking dire… wish I had some milk to go with these cornflakes… Although, I guess that’s probably the least of my worries right now…

Amelia took the Bowie knife from her pocket, and used it to cut two slices off of the end of the bread, which she quickly wolfed down. The bread was dry and rock-hard, but it was food, and that was the important thing. She didn’t want to die out here, and she especially didn’t want to because of starvation.

((Samuel Wilson continued from While Rome Burns))

They'd been walking, the desert heat intensifying. The sun had peaked; then, clouds. That had been a short respite- and then, the Sheriff spoke to them.

More dead, more killers. The Sheriff's voice had come out of nowhere again, telling them the classmates they'd never see again. Sam had listened. He couldn't have done anything else. Clair was the first to be mentioned, and that had been a painful reminder of his failures. Amelia Lennon and Brian Larke were killers now as well.

And then, Delilah's name. Not dead, which could only mean that she'd killed again. She'd started some sort of fire, and that had taken out Holly and Amanda. The Sheriff had said Holly had been a killer. Sam didn't really know what to think about that. The Sheriff had told only truth so far as Sam knew, and he wanted to believe that Delilah had killed in self-defense. A fire wasn't easy to harness. It could have been an accident.

It was too easy to justify. Fact was, more people were dead. Their class was dwindling. People he'd known for more than a decade were dying, their names read out by some impersonal sadist. He couldn't keep justifying, either way. When he found Delilah, that's when he'd have to get the truth, one way or another.

Renee was still following him, far as he knew. He checked back on her every few minutes, enough to check if she was okay. For other reasons too. He had to stay alive, and that meant no trusting, not anymore, no matter how hard-hearted that made him.

They had been walking. They were still walking. Slowly, the cacti appeared, and Sam knew where he was. The last time he had been here, he had been with Clair, looking for Delilah. Now, Clair was dead. Renee was following. He was still looking for Delilah. Things hadn't changed for the better; he hadn't changed for the better.

As his eyes scanned the surroundings, they lit upon a figure, seemingly busy with something. But he recognized the figure. Amelia Lennon. She'd killed.

He wondered, had anyone not killed by now?

"Hold it," he said, his voice a sharp whisper directed behind him. "It's Amelia. What do you reckon we should do?" In a few seconds, she'd probably recognize them too, and that plan'd have to be put into action.

Renee Murphy, as Facemade by me!

(Renee Murphy continued from While Rome Burns)

Renee trudged behind Sam the whole way from the town. Occasionally, Sam would look behind to check to see if she was still there, but there was little interaction between the two aside from that. As they neared an area with cacti and the day reached noon, Renee heard the Sheriff's voice again.

And... shit. Brian killed Eoin. Vivian was dead, killed by Rebecca of all people. This place really wasn't playing nice, was it? Renee gritted her teeth. Pepper, Martin, and Roy were dead now. Holly, of all people, killed them but Leo Raclaw killed her. Delilah killed Amanda Clearwater. That was three now. Sam wasn't going to take that well.

As much as Renee wanted to be surprised, she found that she had been expecting this to happen for some time. She knew that Brian would kill. She knew that Brian and Vivian would get in over their heads. But it didn't have to be so soon, did it? And the others? Leo and Holly, she didn't expect. But, like she had said previously, it didn't take a lot to break people these days.

Still, one thing surprised Renee. Cameo Conroy wasn't in the list of dead. Someone must have found her, aided her, kept her alive. Renee felt like sighing in relief. At least she wasn't responsible for Conroy's death. One ounce of good news in a ton of bad. But Renee took all the good news she could get.

With the sun now at its brightest, Renee and Sam reached the cactus patches. He seemed to recognize the place. Had he been here before? She didn't have time to dwell on it, though, as Sam pointed out that Amelia Lennon was now in front of them. She'd killed hadn't she? Stabbed Tania Chell with a pickaxe. That wasn't good.

"I know Amelia," Renee said. "She was pretty friendly back home but, well, Tania's dead now because of her." Renee scratched her head. "How about we try talking to her, Sam? Diplomacy hasn't always worked in my favor, but it's worth a try, at least. Let's just hang back a bit with our guns just in case she tries anything." Renee raised her MP5 for emphasis.

Well, this was certainly going to be interesting, if nothing else.

Amelia had cut half way into the bread for another slice when she heard something from nearby. She froze instantly, removing the knife and holding it close to her chest, letting the bread fall to the ground. She wasn’t sure where the noise had come from. Amelia looked up, and looked around. Although the cacti were numerous, they were still too spread out to be effective cover. Amelia couldn’t see anything. Cautiously, she picked the bread up again, still keeping the knife close.

Okay, no. There was definitely someone there, someone close by. Amelia heard snippets of conversation, scuffling of feet. Whoever it was was obviously trying to keep quiet, but that was difficult when the only other sound in the vicinity was the wind. Amelia felt like a complete idiot. She was sitting in the middle of an open clearing, for God’s sake! Jesus, girl, you wanna stay alive or not? Cause the way you’re going around right now, you’re not lasting until tomorrow.

Amelia couldn’t spend too long mentally berating herself, though. There was something nearby, and Amelia guessed it was a person. She hadn’t seen any wildlife around, after all. And if it was a person, she had no idea what their intentions were. Was it someone harmless, who’d just stumbled upon her? Was it one of Amelia’s friends? Or was it someone like Delilah or Simon, looking for another victim?

Well, there’s only one option now, isn’t there? Here… here goes nothing…

Amelia quickly stood up and spun round to face the source of the noise. She held the knife tightly in her hand, still keeping it close to her. As it turned out, there were two people in front of her. Samuel Wilson and Renee Murphy. Both of them were friendly people, or at least, they had been back in Alderbrook, not that that was important right now. What was important, however, was that they were both holding guns.

Amelia froze for a second time. She was facing two people with guns, and all she had was a fucking knife. The pickaxe was propped up against her bag, only a few metres away, but to Amelia it seemed miles. They… they must have heard on the announcements about… me… Oh God… they’re… They’re going to kill me, aren’t they?

She was going to die. She was going to die. She’d killed someone, and it had been for nothing. They were going to shoot her, right here and now, and she was going to die. Could she do anything? She couldn’t see what. There wasn’t really much she could defend herself with, verbally or physically. If she charged them, she’d be shot down instantly. She guessed she could say something, try and persuade them, but what? Before she realised it, Amelia started speaking.

“Oh… Please… Please don’t shoot…” It sounded pathetic coming from Amelia, but she had no idea what else to say.

(Brian Larke continued from Die, Die, My Darling)

Walking those plains was thirsty work, but south was the way to go. A quick consultation of his map made him decide that perhaps he could hole up in the springs for a whole, maybe people would avoid the whole Cactus Patch thing, and he could try swimming. The creek and the river would probably have high traffic, and considering his little adventure with Rebecca and the death of Eoin and Vivian and who knew else, he just didn't know if he wanted to seek things out just yet.

Laying low was the easy part, especially since he didn't know how many people were left, he kept an eye out and avoided the living when he could. The dead didn't matter as much.

....It was a cactus maze. Son of a bitch. He should have thought about this, but for some reason he had pictured beautiful springs with the occasional decorative cactus here or there, instead of a maze.

"Perhaps this could work to my advantage," he thought out loud.

Hefting the shotgun to point forward, Brian entered the maze with a cautious eye. Were there voices again? He couldn't tell. Perhaps it was all just in his mind

Renee suggested talking. It was better than shooting, but there weren't any guarantees it wasn't going to come to that. They had guns, Amelia had some sort of weapon - Sam couldn't remember if she had a gun as well. This could get tricky. They could still run, leave before they were forced into a confrontation.

Before he could mutter a response, Amelia noticed them.

The shotgun twitched in Sam's hands, as if to take aim in her general direction, but only until he noticed that she was saying something. Not going for whatever weapon she had. She was asking them not to shoot. Pleading, even.

It felt weird to Sam. He, with a gun, was the threat. If he wanted to, he could pull the trigger, end her life. It felt wrong, having that much power, and yet being so powerless against the Sheriff's whole mind game. The power - that's what Sam had wanted. To be a viable threat, so that others wouldn't take advantage of him again.

Still didn't feel right.

"We're not here to shoot you," Sam said, shooting a sideways glance at Renee. "At least, that isn't my intention at the moment. We've got... we need to talk."

He wasn't sure about this. Try to get Amelia not to kill anymore, that was a plan. Maybe not the best plan, but it was the only plan he had at the moment, other than maybe running if he got the chance and things were going badly.

He was beginning to regret this already.

As soon as Amelia said something, the MP5 went up. It remained up until Renee realized what Amelia was saying.

"Oh," Renee said. "Sorry, sorry." The gun arm went down but Renee felt that glance coming from Sam. "And, yeah. We're not going to shoot."

Renee didn't know why she was getting jumpy all of a sudden. Things didn't feel as hopeful as it had been when she'd first set out with Sam. Then again, Renee had been in a situation like this before. Two people with weapons cornering a potentially unstable girl. It was eerily similar to the situation in the forest. And that ended with Vivian becoming a killer, Brian Larke gaining a thirst for killing, and left Julia Wilson dead. In fact, the last thing that needed to happen to perfectly mirror that incident in the forest is if someone with a gun just came out of nowhere.

Well. Hopefully, things weren't going to go as badly. After all, Sam was here, wasn't he? Right, but he's looking for Delilah Rivers. You know, the one that killed Patrick and Amanda. That's going to end with someone dying. And what are the odds that Sam Wilson will be able to pull the trigger against Delilah?

Renee cleared her throat and faced Amelia. "Okay. We're going to try and be diplomatic here. We know that you killed Tania Chell. All we want to know is why."

Truth be told, Tania Chell was one of those loners that seemed to crop up around Alderbrook a lot. Like Julia Wilson and Cameo Conroy. And she was dead. Renee didn't know what to think of that, but hopefully Amelia had only killed her in self-defense. It wouldn't be unimaginable, after all, being a loner and everything.

God, what was she thinking? Hoping that someone had violent intentions so that dealing with her killer would be easier? Renee sighed mentally. This was going to be a very lousy day.

Instantly, Renee’s gun was up, pointed directly at Amelia, and she knew that this was the end. Nothing she could say would save her. She’d gone and killed someone, and she was paying for it now with her own life. Goddamnit. Everything I’ve done… was completely pointless. Amelia closed her eyes, and waited for the gunshot, blocking out everything but her own thoughts.

When the shot never came, Amelia tentatively opened one eye. Neither Sam nor Renee were pointing their weapons at her. In fact, Sam was trying to talk to her.

“We’ve got to… we need to talk.”

It took a few moments for Amelia to comprehend what Sam was saying. She’d fully expected to die here, and the honest part of her knew that she deserved it. But Sam and Renee had spared her life, at least for the moment. Amelia felt like crying, not out of fear this time, but out of relief. They were letting her live, giving her another chance. In the back of her mind, though, Amelia had the unpleasant reminder of what she’d done to Tania, and the fact that, if she wanted to get out of here alive, she’d have to do the same to Sam and Renee.

That’s… wait, that’s probably what they’re here for right now, isn’t it?

Sure enough, as if she could read Amelia’s thoughts, Renee asked the question. Why had she killed Tania? It was a simple enough question. And the answer seemed easy, on the surface. But underneath the surface was a whole web of different reasons for why she’d resorted to killing. There was desperation after the failed escape plan, anger at her classmates for killing her friends, blind faith in this “Sheriff”, that if she was the last one alive, she’d go free.

What could she say though? Not one part of her thought process truly justified Tania’s murder. Amelia sighed, and closed her eyes. The best thing to say, I guess, would be the one thing that I’ve been following all this time.

Amelia opened her eyes and spoke. “All right… I… I killed Tania because I wanted to live. Because her being dead gives me a better chance of getting out of here alive.” Amelia looked down at the floor now. “I… I didn’t enjoy it, if you’re wondering, but… there’s nothing else I can do…”

Renee. That was one voice that sounded familiar. She sure got around, didn't she? Was she with a boy? Brian distinctly hear the muffled sounds of some boy talking, and Brian didn't know whether he should be jealous or not. She had offered to have sex with him, didn't she? A smirk tugged at the corner of Brian's lips. Had Renee arranged the same sort of situation with the boy she was with now?

Was he going to be interrupting something?

The illusion of walking in on something fairly entertaining was shattered by a fairly nervous voice, also female. There was no way that another boy at Alderbrook was capable of pulling off a threeway. The girls were way too prudish for that, even in this situation.

As he crept closer, he managed to pick out the last few words out of the mouth of the girl he didn't seem to know.

“I… I didn’t enjoy it, if you’re wondering, but… there’s nothing else I can do…”

That was just too much for Brian Larke. His grin grew bigger, and he began to walk forward towards the little coffee clutch.

Slowly clapping his hands in complete and utter appreciation.

"Don't mind me," he said. "I'm really just enjoying the show."

Amelia gave her reason. Of course, they all wanted to live. For some of them, killing others was the way to go about achieving that. Sam understood, but didn't understand, all at the same time.

The fear, he could understand. The feeling that everyone was about to turn on you, shoot you, steal your stuff - that's why he'd become reserved, unwilling to trust. That's why Delilah had killed Richard. Killing was an overreaction, not justifiable, but understandable. But to just shoot someone who had given you no offense down in cold blood because it could have a chance at furthering your life... that Sam couldn't understand. The Sheriff had made no promises.

"So the Sheriff says kill and you kill?" Sam said, quietly. "Is that what everyone's doing now?"

And then, Brian Larke, emerging out of nowhere, with a shotgun, clapping. Another threat. He was a killer too.

Sam could feel his hand twitching on his own shotgun. Things were getting more complicated than he was comfortable with. If Brian made to shoot, Sam could probably get a shot off. But at what cost? Cutting and running seemed like a better and better solution every second. He shot another glance at Renee - as furtively as he could - as if to somehow convey that.

Of course.

Of course, Brian, of all people, had to show up here. It's not like Renee was having enough trouble as it was. No, Brian Larke the killer, Brian Larke the murderer, had to appear out of nowhere. That was the second time that happened. Was he stalking her or something?

Renee had absolutely no qualms about raising her MP5 at Brian. At least Renee had been right. This was going to be very interesting.

"Brian," she said tentatively. "You're not coming any further." Renee furrowed her brow. This wasn't going to end well, she could tell. Just like Julia Wilson. "Stay back or I will shoot. Don't think I won't, Brian. Not after you killed Eoin and got Vivian killed."

Once again, Renee felt weird talking like that. Like this was some sort of dream that wasn't meant to be happening. Some horrible nightmare in a spaghetti western that went too far. But this wasn't a dream. Vivian proved that. Julia proved that. So did Brian.

Renee gripped her MP5 tight, aiming at Brian, the afternoon sun making her feel very hot at that moment. Renee had noticed that Sam had glanced at her, perhaps trying to tell her something without saying anything. Maybe to just get out of there? No, too late for that now.

"And don't even bother calling in that favor I owed you. That deal was off the moment I left you and Vivian." Of course, Renee had to mention that. She had a feeling that Brian would mention it at some point.

“So the Sheriff says kill and you kill? Is that what everyone’s doing now?”

Amelia thought about that for a moment, rotating the knife in her hand as she did so. Sam had a point. This was all due to the Sheriff, wasn’t it? He was the one that said someone’d get out alive if they were the only one left. How was Amelia to know if he was lying or not? For all she knew, he could be planning on killing every last person out here.

No… I can’t think like that. Not when I’ve come this far, and done what I’ve done. He has to be telling the truth… Anyway, there’s nothing else I could have done. I could have wandered around avoiding killing before getting picked off myself, tried to escape, and that went so well, or… or do what I did…

Amelia was about to vocalise her answer to Sam and Renee, when a fourth person appeared from the maze of cacti. Holding a shotgun, clapping, and with a familiar smug grin on his face. Brian fucking Larke. Even on a good day, Amelia would have hated to see him, as in her mind, he was pretty much the biggest, assholeish tool in the whole of Alderbrook. At least then, though, he was predictable and fairly harmless. But here, he’d killed too. If he was doing anything along the lines of what Amelia was aiming for-God, she hated associating herself with him-he’d be planning on killing again. But right now, his aims were unknown. He was currently an enigma, and Amelia didn’t like that in the slightest.

Before Amelia could, basically, tell Brian to fuck off, Renee did the job for her. Apparently she’d been with Brian when he’d killed Eoin. Amelia simply settled for gripping the knife tighter, and pointing it at Brian. She slowly edged towards her bag and pickaxe. She could make a run for it now. Sam and Renee were both focused on Brian.

But Brian had his eye on all of them, and Amelia knew that, the moment her back was turned, he’d most likely shoot her. Besides, despite her plan, which she repeated over and over in her head, the plan Sam hadn’t managed to dislodge from her mind yet, Amelia felt a sense of loyalty towards Sam and Renee. Maybe it was because they’d spared her life, and she wasn’t about to let them get killed. Whatever. Amelia simply stayed to the side, quiet, waiting for the next move.

The ghost of a feeling flickered over Brian's face as Renee accused Brian of getting Vivian killed. His smile slowly began to crumble under the weight of that accusation, under the weight of what she truly believed. Who cared if she didn't want to sleep with him anymore? Women were a fickle lot, Brian had always expected that from them, it was why he kept so many around. She probably felt powerful by declaring it to him now.

From the corner of his eye he saw the other girl move. Part of him didn't know if he wanted to keep an eye on her to make sure she didn't kill Renee or Sam, or let them learn. He decided on the latter, looking up at Renee, trying to remain calm.

"I didn't get Vivian killed, Rebecca killed Vivian, or did you forget about how prolific she is?"

He didn't understand why seeing the disgust on her fact bothered him so much. He had offered to protect her, didn't she see that?

"Vivian killed Vivian, perhaps, if you want to look at it that way, but I did not get her killed. But perhaps you are right. I don't belong in this little discussion."

Why was he mad? He could feel it pressing against the back of his eyes.

"I've been searching for Rebecca, her and I need to have a little chat. I'm not in the habit of interviewing people before I kill them like you two seem to be."

It was an awkward tableau to Brian, two against one, and the other girl looked cornered. What else could they possibly be doing? He gritted his teeth, still looking at Renee. His shotgun wasn't up yet, he didn't feel as though it had to be, why dig himself deeper? Renee had a gun.

"You think I'm so terrible because I've pulled a few triggers. You. When you were more than happy to have me do it for you, if I remember properly, darling. Is it because you found someone else who would shoot where you point, instead of on their own?"

His eyes skittered over to Sam, then back to Renee.

"We're all dead, sugar. Everything else is just packaging."

The situation was uncomfortable. Apparently Renee and Brian had some previous history. Something about Vivian's death, something about a favor. Petty jabs, implications. Nothing Sam wanted to get involved with. He felt pretty too far involved already, as it was. He still had Delilah to find.

Sam edged a little backwards, trying to keep his eyes on both Brian and Amelia at the same time. The former was more of a threat, but the latter... was she moving? He could have sworn he saw her move for a second.

Maybe she had, maybe she hadn't. He let it slide. No need to call her out, raise the tension, not when the stakes were so high. He needed to stay alert, and right now, Brian was the priority.

"Let's calm it down here," Sam muttered, his shotgun pointing at Brian's feet. "Dead or not, we've all got other stuff we still have to do."

(I super hate to skip like this, but Brian's got a date)

"Dead or not, we've all got other stuff we still have to do."

Brian's expression was cold as he saw Sam lower the shotgun and spout off some hippy bullshit. Renee had chosen him? Who was going to protect who?

His eyes shot to the girl, she was definitely moving. This was all such bullshit to him. Not worth his time, he preferred the plains. So he made a choice.

Brian slung his own shotgun over his shoulder.

"You're right," he replied. "I do."

He turned on his heel and began to walk away. What had his plan there been anyway? To villian monologue his way into their group? Had that been what he wanted?

There was a glorious mental image, for just a moment, of Sam lying dead at his feet, and the two girls exclaiming of how hot it had been that he had killed him like that. Then, of course, the threeway.

And it wasn't even Brian Larke's birthday.

Fine. He probably hadn't even wanted some sort of peaceful interaction. God, what was wrong with him?

Maybe being away from people was good for him at the moment. He looked up at the sky, and tried to find his way back to his cowboy spot....

(Brian Larke continued elsewhere....)
