Lexi could hear it all, there was yelling from Renee. She could hear gunfire as she dropped to the sand. She couldn't get shot then, hopefully. Why was there always shooting around? Why was every visit to this beach deadly?

They should have run somewhere else, to the lake south of the ski resort. Not here. Not this beach where Karen had killed people and more people were shooting people around her.

Not here.

Nobody stopped. Nobody calmed down. Instead, the girl leveled her gun and pulled the trigger.

It took a second for Renée to realize that she'd been shot. She was lying in the sand. She couldn't feel her left leg. There was more gunfire—close by? far away?—she couldn't even tell. She didn't care. She glanced down and saw that her left thigh had been shredded by the bullet. There was blood everywhere, soaking into the sand. Was that a fragment of bone sticking out of the skin?

This wasn't right. She'd been trying to calm things down, to finally do something positive, and now she'd been crippled for it. No, forget crippled. Renée had watched the show often enough, had seen enough serious injuries, to know that she wasn't making it out. She was going to die here. She was almost detached from it, sitting off at a distance, observing the action on the screen one last time. There wasn't anything left for her to do to change things. She could sit here and maybe wish Mason good luck and then just die.

Renée had never thought all that much about death. It was a weird abstraction. It was just an ending, just the thing where people stopped acting on the screen and became objects or were never seen or mentioned again. She'd never really thought about what would happen when she died, except perhaps in the vague way most people probably did. She hoped there was something afterwards. She'd never really liked going to church, but now she wished she'd paid a bit more attention.

She wasn't crying, wasn't screaming. She was just feeling weird, like she was already done with her run here and was just going through the formalities. It was worse that way. It was terrifying. She thought back to all those deaths she had seen, all those kids she'd watched die. She wondered what they'd thought. Some of them had been so quiet. One boy had laughed. It had haunted her, because he had laughed the entire ten minutes it took him to bleed out. She didn't want to laugh. She didn't want to be on someone's screen, just another face fading away, just another check mark on someone's death list. She didn't want people talking about her in the future, didn't want anyone to repeat her mistakes and think there was anything noble or heroic about this show.

She felt like she should say something to that effect, but she was choked up, overwhelmed with pain, not at all able to string together coherent phrases. She just wanted to come back to reality.

"Mason?" she called.

[[GLD4: Shawn Morrison Continued Back From: ClusterF***.]]

It became another one of those moments where time seemed to speed up and slow down at the same time.

They had spotted the others immediately, not a hard task, with the night slowly fading into early morning and the group already large as it was. There just was something obviously not right about everything. Mason was yelling and pointing a gun at a new comer from their school, who wasn't Madelyn. She wasn't there as he thought she would be. Instead it was... the ghost?

No, it was that artsy girl from their school. The ghost from the ski resort, covered in blood, was Nate Chauncy and she held a large gun.

Mae and Renée were trying to talk down Nate, but Mason was making it worse. He was shouting, pointing his gun and overall just scaring the visibly shaken girl.

Then Mason did the worst possible thing he could have done and fired a bullet into the air, causing practically everyone to lose their calm and when that happens, he knew from experience, like back at the hotel, that everything and everyone would get jumpy and out of control.

Shawn jumped back once he heard the first pop from Mason's gun and no sooner than five seconds later, a larger crack erupted from where Nate stood. Another pop erupted from Mason's gun and Shawn saw Renée drop to the sand.

This couldn't be happening. He pulled and lifted Sterling's Mac-10 Machine gun into the air pointed forward, as his eardrums continued to thump from the amount of bullets shot in such a short amount of time. He stepped forward to check on Renée and to push Nate away from them with his own weapon until, yet another, shot rang out from somewhere amongst the resort beach's shacks.

His attention turned to the source of the noise where he saw Madelyn's figure standing next to a building.

Why? Why had she shot at them. How could she? And then Shawn saw Mae fall.

His eyes opened completely, just as it did the several other times he witnessed someone get shot and die in front of him.

Madelyn. Was their friend. But she hid and shot at them anyway. Because of what... Sterling?! Sure he was her team mate, but she knew nothing about the boy from the other school, he was sure of it and Mad knew them for several years now and she still chose to side with her Detroit Purple team over them? No Mae was hurt, because of her. That selfish, treacherous, bitch!

Shawn stood and unloaded a spray of gun fire from the Mac-10 Machine gun to where Madelyn stood, pure anger filling his veins.

"You run. You run bitch! You run, because the next time I see you, you're dead!"

He turned his attention to the other one, Nate. She had been the one responsible for shooting Renée and because of her Renée may have been dead.

Shawn Morrison pumped his shot gun and shot a round into the sand next to the girl.

"You too!"

Another pump and another shot in her general direction. Shawn was so freaking, sick of this. He'd had enough. Now he was just gonna let that anger out. In fact he'd never remembered being so angry before in his life, not since his dad passed away. Fuck being the nice guy. He had come back here to run away from death, only to come back to witness more of it. His one hope of escape in Renée loss. It wasn't fair.

Mae, she was almost done too. She had done so much for him and now she was unjustly taken away from him by someone who didn't deserve to live. Maybe he was looking at everything so wrong before. It wasn't just the Detroit kids who were problems here. It was his own classmates and friends who he had to watch out for as well, if Madelyn was any indication.

Shawn knelt near Mae and comforted her, hoping to god, that she could live through this.

"Survive this." She told him.

Yes, he would. He would make damn sure of it, but he wanted her to survive with him, with all of them - together. They were a team. They were friends. He... really liked her.

No, she wasn't going to die, she couldn't. He had saved her life before from drowning at the pool, in sickeningly enough, Madelyn's house party. That moment involved a kiss. Maybe, just maybe for some odd miracle it would work, this time too?

He bent down, felt the electric feel, from the first time and then slowly felt it melt away. He knew what that meant, he just didn't want to think it. He just closed her eyes.

*

Seconds later a voice filled Shawn with some hope: "Mason?"

It was Renée! She was still alive! He wasn't Mason, but Shawn and Renée were still really good friends, again after that same darn party. He quickly went over to her, ignoring everything else and watched her chest go up and down slowly, her eyes open as he concentrated his efforts there, instead of her large wound. He held one of her hands softly.

"Renée! Thank god you're still alive. Stay with me, girl! We're supposed to find a way out of here together. Just like those escapes you talked to me about back home, remember?"

Shawn kept a smile on his face for Renée's sake, knowing deep down, that she probably wasn't going to make it.

Things were happening. The pain was getting worse. The world was fading, shifting, falling out of focus. There were arteries in the legs, weren't there? There were things that would kill her in minutes. That must have been what was hit. Nothing else made sense, not with how she was feeling.

Renée forced herself to look up, though, to see her friends, her team. She saw Mason turning, saw his face darkening, and she hoped that he would be okay somehow. This wasn't fair. It wasn't right for her to leave him. She was supposed to be the leader. Everything had changed, but she still wanted to do something for him.

And there was Shawn, looking down at her. Shawn had a forced smile. He was lying that she'd be fine. He was saying they'd all go home, just like in the escapes she'd told him about.

Renée wanted to vomit. How had she ever justified this show to Shawn? How had she ever told herself this was okay?

No, she'd lied by omission. She'd left out details to allow her to stomach her horrible, sadistic, voyeuristic tendencies. The least she could do, the last she could manage, would be to undo the harm she had caused. She had to remove the blinders from Shawn's eyes, to give him and Mason a fighting chance. Was Mason there now too? She couldn't tell. The pain was horrible. The world was shaking around her. Her nose felt runny. She was probably presenting a pretty ugly picture right now. Not one of the deaths she'd always thought had been almost pretty. Not a majestic demise.

Just one more thing to do. Maybe she could finally get something right. It wasn't heroic, but that had been a stupid dream. She wished she had settled for human instead, like Shawn, like Mason.

"I," she started, and then she coughed and it made it all hurt so much worse. She tried again.

"I was l-lying to myself, Shawn," she said. Her voice was fading fast. She had to get this out.

Her words had dropped to a mumble.

"No one ever gets out unless they let them go."

That was the cusp of it. All the escapes, they were allowed to boost ratings. This season had enough gimmicks. It probably didn't need the help, especially not with the killer freed. They were all going to die, all of the people left here, all except one. Renée hoped whoever it was enjoyed it. She hoped they did something good with it.

And then something spasmed, and she tried to scream but just let out a hiss, and she closed her eyes just for a second to make the pain go away, but it didn't work at all, and she couldn't open her eyes anymore, and when it all stopped it was almost a relief.

A voice echoes quietly from Shawn's collar...

"You're almost there, kid. I know you're hurting, but you've got to keep it together. Take it from me, don't let emotion mess up your play. You've got to reassess and rework and ride this all out. Keep cool, act like a pro, and maybe at least you'll be fine."

So many kills in so little time. Madelyn's mind and body were having difficulty adjusting to this. It was immoral, but necessary. Necessary meant right, didn't it? She couldn't figure it out. Not now at least. She stood there contemplating shooting Shawn when he shot first.

Madelyn's body was back in triathlon mode as she fled. Shawn was cursing her out, and when he finished all she could think was.

Bring it.

She had no rebuttals, and she sure as hell wasn't going to try to reconcile their friendship. This was SOTF-TV. This was life. Bridges had to be burned, and your eyes had to tear from the smoke, and your lungs had to burn with it.

((dunno I might go inactive or not, so I'll just post))

Mason didn't know what happened to the little girl with the big gun after he opened fire. Truthfully, he didn't know much of anything. The haze of the situation had settled, and was partially lifted by Renee.

By Renee passing.

She had said his name, and he had turned, rage melting into panicked shock. Shawn was at her side first.

Where the fuck were you?

She had choked out some last words, words to think about.

No one ever gets out.

His grip tightened on the Beretta.

Lexi was laying in the sand. She could hear the yelling, Shawn yelling at someone, there had been different gunshots right? There had been Mason with his, then the really loud one that still sounded a bit far away, then the handgun, also far away. And lots on the other side, lots and lots...And a few loud ones from nearby too, after Shawn yelled, about revenge? Oh no, someone really had died hadn't they? No. No! She couldn't have more people dying around her, they were supposed to stay together as a group and not die...

She was lying there for another few moments and there were no more gunshots. She stood up, feeling some sand that had been stuck to her face fall to the ground. She saw Renee on the ground, and oh God there was a lot of blood. She only got there in time to hear something about letting them go. Was she talking about herself? Letting her die? Renee didn't say anything after that, but breathed for a few more moments.

Oh God she's really dead isn't she?

Lexi could feel the tears starting to flow down her face. A sob was fighting to break free of her chest. Why? Why did everyone she find die a little bit after she found them? It wasn't fair! Why couldn't another school have been picked? Not right, putting the nice people from her school against those horrible Detroit people. So much that even those from the academy would murder.

She turned her head. Through her tears she saw another fresh body. Mae. A pause to think. She was dead, the popular girl, the one who boys liked. Poor Shawn! Shawn had been with her hadn't he? And they had been teammates too, on top of it all.

The sob came out, and the stream of tears turned into a river as she buried her face in her hands.

Renée told him a few really deep things. Things that he could not really think about yet. All he could think about was that fact that she was gone. Both Renée and Mae were gone within seconds of each other and he didn't feel well at all.

Shawn stayed exactly where he was, unmoving and in absolute silence. He tilted his head, down forward, closed his eyes and rested his face onto his palm.

Nate's aim was sent wild by the vicious recoil on the sniper rifle, not even knowing if she'd intended to hit anyone. Her finger jerked again, sending a round somewhere into the sky, then she straightened her aim up a little and on pure auto-pilot, fired erratically, emptying the magazine as she back-pedalled across the sand. Her mind was blank, all traces of the rationality she'd had before fled. Nate might have had a reason to start shooting, but that had departed from her head the second the bullets started flying.

She stumbled and scrambled and staggered, further and further away from the group on the sand. Had she hit somebody? It looked like she'd hit somebody. They gone down, they were on the sand, the bright sand, the bright sand soaking dark with redness. For a second, Nate froze, her eyes drawn to the injured girl, the girl she'd hurt... and that was long enough.

Something tore at her guts, ripping through her left side. Nate let out a strangled cry, almost dropping her gun, but holding on with fingers that were suddenly numbed. Her other hand went to the site of the burst of pain, and found wetness. Her vision spiralled around her and she swayed, stumbled, narrowly avoiding getting shot again. Because that's what had happened.

I've been shot, I'm shot I'm shot, I'm shot, oh god, ohgodohgodohgod

A warm liquid was oozing down her side, trickling over the waistband of the stupid stupid skirt.

Nothing but panic now. Nate lurched around, put her head down, and began to run as best she could, hand clasped tight to the bullet wound, little whimpers of pain escaping her with every movement.

Shawn lifted his head. His palms were moist. He felt drained. Defeated.

I was l-lying to myself, Shawn. No one ever gets out unless they let them go.

It was all a lie. He hadn't lost his only hope for an escape. No, there never was any hope for them - not unless they were allowed to. Renée had made that absolutely clear. The odd thing was that Shawn realized he knew that already. He just allowed himself to believe that they could. Almost always looking on the optimistic side, never the pessimist. He needed that boost of confidence, despite the clear logic he had formed in his head when Renée first told him about the escapes. Shawn very near almost convinced himself otherwise; hoping, praying, completely believing that Renée had the answer to everything.

It made sense. With Renée's death, the blinds were lifted and Shawn had to accept the truth.

There is no other way out. Stop kidding yourself.

Then he heard Lexi's cry.

His mind fluttered back into reality. There were still others with him, others who were hurting just as bad. He put a comforting arm over her shoulder and closed his eyes. Maybe he could forget about his own pain, if he could help someone like Alexis with hers.

Nate was gone too. All that was left of her presence here was a trail of blood on the sand. He could follow her. Execute her for killing Renée, but no, he wouldn't. What would that solve? Just another dang body added to the list. He didn't even really blame her for any of it. She had been provoked.

By Mason Ross.

"You idiot."

Shawn stood straight up, dropping all weapons in his immediate possession onto the sand. He gave an accusatory glare in Mason's direction.

"If-if you would've listened to Mae and-and Renée and just calmed-down, this wouldn't have happened."

He wanted to yell at him, blame him for the shootout. He wanted to redirect his sadness into anger at the boy for being that stimulus responsible for all the hurting. Instead it came out different. It didn't come out as rage filled, or angry as Shawn intended it to be. His voice cracked with every word. His eyes glazed and swelling. The sadness he was attempting to contain, kept breaking out in the form of telling sniffs and sobs behind his facade.

"W-Why the hell did you shoot? All it did was scare that girl to shoot back. You-you should have just fuckin' listened Mason!"

Shawn felt horrible for putting all guilt on Mason like that. It wasn't even completely his fault. Madelyn had shot too. He just wanted a reason not to be sad anymore, but it didn't work. In fact, it made him feel worse. He realized then that he wasn't angry at Mason. He wasn't even mad at all.

Finally, the tears came with a quiver of his bottom lip. Then the sobs, as Shawn slowly dropped back onto his legs next to Mae's body.

The gun flopped in Mason's arm, bouncing painfully off of his thigh and his finger off the trigger. He watched the girl he shot go, focusing on her. He didn't want to turn and see what had happened to Renee. He already knew, and he didn't need to be confronted with it.

Shawn wasn't going to let him avoid it, though. Words. He had fucking words about it.

"She wouldn't..." He swallowed, took a deep breath. "She wouldn't put the gun down."

He wanted to give some of Shawn's anger back. Wanted to shout, "You don't know me, you fuck!" But all that died when the long-haired boy dropped to cry over Mae.

Mason's jaw set, and a sob died in his own throat as he choked it down. He moved to where Mae was laying, and, awkwardly put a hand on Shawn's shoulder. It was as good an apology as he could manage.

She heard the words through the tears and the sobs. Blame. It was always someone's fault. But was it Mason's? She didn't think so. He was just trying to help! The girl was obviously crazy, or evil.

How could someone do that? Just show up to a group and just shooting someone, not even the person with a gun. Just the short girl, shorter than Lexi actually...that was unarmed or close to it. Not that she wanted Mason dead. No she didn't want anyone else to die. Not that there was much of a choice. She could still feel the pistol in the layers of clothing she was wearing. She knew what she might have to do with it.

But why the blame? Their group had to stick together, otherwise...otherwise she would be better off alone. If they were going to turn on each other she should leave now. She stood up, wiping away a few stray teardrops from her eyes.

Would she have to leave or not?

Shawn didn't flinch when Mason put his hand on his shoulder.

"Sorry, Mas'."

It was all he could say.

He kept his eyes on Mae, the whistle still hanging from her neck, his own whistle around his. He held his and blew. He kept whistling and whistling. It was what they agreed on. If the team ever needed each other, they'd blow the whistle and they'd respond.

Then the voice spoke up. But it wasn't Mae; not even Alexis or Mason.

"You're almost there, kid. I know you're hurting, but you've got to keep it together. Take it from me, don't let emotion mess up your play. You've got to reassess and rework and ride this all out. Keep cool, act like a pro, and maybe at least you'll be fine."

Brian E... No.

It wasn't the snake that was still in his bag. It came from Mae's collar and Shawn realized the voice was coming from his collar too. As much as it pained him to admit it; Shawn knew the man was right.

Shawn dabbed away the droplets from his face and punched the ground.

He looked up, saw Alexis standing and looking uncomfortable around him and Mason, almost like she wanted to leave. He couldn't blame her after he went off on Mason, after everything right before that. His own classmates were killing too. Madelyn for example, killed Mae and was playing for herself. It was frustrating to think that the three of them left on this beach had to turn against each eventually, if they wanted to leave the place alive that was.

"I'm going to stay here for a little bit." Shawn said quietly, standing up and looking at the two fallen Silver Dragon Students.

Wasn't right to leave the two girls exposed like that. It was up to Mason and Alexis, if they wanted to go their own ways or not.
