So in SOTF-TV, the eponymous show is pretty much the only good thing on, and almost every character watches it. And if they don't, they hear about it through their friends that do. So to avoid ass-pulls and weird contradictions arising, I figure it might be worth inventing some lore for the show. Some past winners, dark horses, particularly awesome scenes, the like. The sorts of things we as handlers remember from SOTF proper. Who are TV's Dodds, Calverts, Rizzolos, and dare I ask... Blood Boys? |

Well in Fate Bash I pegged Season Five's winner as a Moon faced red head with a small nose (not exact quote). I guess her name will be Tina Jones. Also, from Suspension of Disbelief we have Johnathan Stone as a winner from an earlier season. Edited by Acidic, Mar 22 2011, 10:01 PM.

Well, Seeing as my character would be partial to looking previous versions for inspiration and tactics, I should probably chip in with the writing. So if anyone wants a specific character type done, I'll write a paragraph or two about them (as long as that's cool with everyone else). Heinous acts, dilemas, death (or how they reacted to winning), Etc. So, anybody see any holes in this? Or have any suggestions? |

Slayer, I PM'd Clu about this a while ago. As long as we aren't contradicting we're alright.

The show has also been around for quite a while, so you can avoid treading on toes by simply being vague as to season when specifying past stuff. Just be sure not to get too in depth about security measures/things that could lead to escapes or whatever, because that's the sort of thing that could very likely be hit with a staff override. |

I would imagine that deliberate suicides are vanishingly rare in more recent seasons as the participants know that they are on SOTF-TV and that they are part of a popular mass medium. Those few who do commit suicide are almost certainly derided and vilified on web forums and analysis shows. Likewise, becoming a player of the game is probably somewhat less of a public relations disaster. |

I have a degree in film, so I'm going to throw my hat into the theoretical part of the ring. (My apologies to the people in the sandbox I haven't posted back to yet, I am so working on it) Okay, we're in an entertainment dystopia, where everything's been done and the last final frontier of entertainment is SOTF-TV. That is understandable, it's possible, however as a person who has studied media in college, I'm trying to paint a picture of how everyone's day to day life would possibly be if it's dictated by this murderous sport. (I'll use my characters as examples only because I know them the best) Ok. So it's been established that liking things not having anything to do with SOTF-TV is fine, albeit a little old fashioned. Mae's ballet dancing is pretty much like if a person in this time loved throwing tea parties while plucking on a harpsichord. At least, that's what I'm getting from this. However, here are my questions: 1. What about literature? Or music? I can picture the new "pop" music being entirely about killing people in the arena. "True Love Be True (Until I Murder You)" stuff like that. But books? Are all books set in SOTF-TVland? Would a world where the entertainment industry isn't horrible be considered science fiction, or is not one thinking like that because it's too boring to contemplate? 2. Movies. Are most movies just fancy versions of the original tv-show with a higher budget (better weapons, etc.) maybe with different age groups? Or are movies, since SOTF-TV is reality tv and therefore a film like that would be considered a documentary, are there face games? Basically mockumentaries or even high budget films of fictionalized games? 3. Awards. To people get posthumously awarded with "coolest death" or "best backstabbing (LITERALLY)" and stuff like that? or is the entertainment industry so tired with their lives that they literally cannot bring themselves to do an awards show? 4. Celebrities. Clearly big name actors as we know it are no longer that important, now the celebrity is you, which makes the film industry super in trouble, if it even exists anymore. I suppose winners of past seasons could be considered celebrities, and that totally overthrows the celebrity of today. Are kids buying Nikes because the cool dude who went out like a hero wore Nikes? I've already sort of touched on what advertising would be like in this sort of dystopian world, even if it was on a DVD (which is still incredibly possible, if we are in the future DVDs could totally have commercials on them. It's a great advertising ploy in a future where entertainment is dying. Yes I am totally trying to write around what Jake saw in Fate Bash.) Anyway, these aren't questions I guess more like thoughts that have sprung to mind when trying to have my characters interact in the world. These are kids that grew up not watching Gossip Girl, it has to have some effect on the culture as a whole. Also: oh man. Longest post ever, sorry! |

Also bear in mind that during times of economic depression, people tend to prefer media with happy endings (comedy stories, action adventure, etc), whereas in economic boom times, people tend to prefer media with tragic or downer endings (horror/slasher stories, unhappy romance stories, etc). These are historic trends as I understand them, and I am not an expert. |

I'm totally not an expert! Just a fan of world building! This is true though, during the Great Depression vaudeville was all the rage and them there talkies got made! even now during our "recession" there were tons of movies that were pure fun, crazy action films (Crank, anyone?) as well as fluffy romantic comedies that have gotten so exhausted I'm surprised it's still a genre. (Okay, not surprised, wish fulfillment still sells big). If we're breaking down SOTF-TV on a level like that, it's easy to believe that the world in which SOTF-TV is set has bounced back in a big way economically. Lots of Avatars were made and the entire idea of "losing the actor" (I.E. through mostly CGI works blah blah blah) were also insanely exhausted. If we're to believe that then the world of literature also sort of took a back slide (it's easy to make films when there are plenty of hugely popular books to adapt) basically everything on tvtropes has become a Dead Horse Trope, perhaps even a Dead Unicorn trope. Probably to save themselves from this executives forced themselves to focus on the lives of the TV audience, lots of "This American Life: the tv shows" were probably made until they realized that now that everything's pretty cool, human life is boring. Who wants to watch "everyone succeeds life is awesome" all the time? With unemployment and homelessness down, there's no sad wretches to follow, there's no painful lives. No conflict. So? Make conflict. Cinema verite is dead, so why bother? Throw people whose lives have been awesome their entire life into life or death situations. The crowd goes WILD. This is cutting edge! This is fascinating! After several seasons though....getting a little done? PUT THEM ON A VOLCANIC ISLAND. Have people VOTE for who lives and who dies (clearly this season didn't do that...) One season? The kids ONLY GET LANDMINES. There a so many different ways to kill a person, and because of this? So many different ways to have a season of SOTF-TV. Oh no, an unlikable character is going to win? Looks like there was a collar malfunction! Stuff like that, oh my I am rambling. |

To add to the above about advertising, what about sponsors? Does that crowd just LOVE a certain player? Than a company would want to give them a lil something something, so they can say they help them in the game. |

I don't think outside intervention in the form of giving players things is something that'd fly. It's a bit too Hunger Games for TV. Using popular players for merchandising, on the other hand, could probably occur. |

Here's some lore on the show I wrote into one of my Sandbox posts. Spoiler: click to toggle As far as advertising tie-ins, here's what I could see. Suppose one of the popular figures on the show ended up with a certain gun or other signature weapon. The makers of that gun would want to use that character in their own marketing. Free product placement! |

I'm not sure whether this idea will work out, but what about having former winners discuss the current game? Like a half time report where they're interviewed or something. |
