It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and classes had just ended for the students at the prestigious Silver Dragon Academy. One student in particular, however, wasn't concerned with returning home just yet. Suzanne Lanford was sitting on a bench at the side of the walkway that led out of the campus, her backpack sitting at her side and her school notebook lying on her lap. She lazily spun a pencil in her fingers as she looked thoughtfully at the blank sheet, wondering what exactly she should write. It wasn't a school assignment or extra credit report that she was working on...instead it was actually an idea for a character in a roleplay that one of her online friends had introduced her to.

A slight smile graced her face as she began writing an outline on the paper, leaving blank fields for name, age, school, description, and the like. She wondered if it was morbid to participate on a forum roleplay based off a popular television show. Then again, if it was any other tired television show, then it might have been better, but this was Survival of the Fittest. It was so popular that roleplay forums had popped up on the internet almost instantly at the first season of the show and they still persisted all the way to this time. Suzanne wasn't the biggest fan of the show, but she certainly enjoyed watching it and besides, it was a good way to help practice her writing skills. It took a certain kind of skill to write about teenagers killing each other and maybe the experience would help her get dramatic and heart-wrenching scenes when she went on to write something original.

'What would be a good name...I need something that sounds normalish, but unique enough to make people remember it...' She thought to herself as she tapped her pencil against her lips, sucking on the eraser as she wracked her mine for it. She hated coming up with names and titles...for some reason she had a real problem with them. It was really troublesome, especially for those times when she had this great idea she wanted to write, but couldn't put it on paper cause she got stuck on what to call it.

"Hmmm...Seraphina...Thompson...? Would that be a good name...? Hmmmm..."

Just another afternoon, really.

It wasn't unusual for Ben Grayson to stick around after hours. Indeed, it was commonplace for him to be found in the science lab or in the library perusing books on obscure topics. Today, however, was one of those rare times where he preferred to loiter outside. It was nice. Even he could admit that. So, he skulked on the edges of the school area with his sketchbook tucked under his arm. As of late he hadn't committed many drawings to its paper and he thought he might change that.

He knew there were benches in a certain section of the campus. Heading towards it, he took his time. Better to let the population dwindle some. After a while, he arrived at the end of the walkway. Tightening his grip on his sketchbook, he moved closer to the line of benches. A girl had seated herself on one of them. Ben thought he might recognize her. Maybe in one of his classes, probably in the same grade.

He hesitated a short distance away and debated his options. What would have been a simple matter of Take A Bench Anywhere to someone else was almost a monumental decision to him. For once he chose bravery over cowardice. He worried whether the girl knew who he was. If she did, well, she could scorn him if she wished. Ben sat in the bench next to hers. Close enough to say something if he could, just distant enough so silence wouldn't seem too strange.

With the tip of his thumb, Ben frilled the paper at the corner of his notebook. Then the girl spoke. Ben glanced over. He could comment or he could not. He chose the former.

"If she's from some sort of magical fantasy land. The first name, I mean, that's the sort of place I imagine its owner living in." Perhaps a little too honest and random of a comment, but then Ben wasn't one for social nuances.

Zach sat on the bench a few steps down the artfully designed, but really rather pointless walkway. It did however, provide a modicum of personal freedom, the fact that it was the opposite side of the complex to the PE department - And therefore jocks - was a blessing. It's distance from any roads or the music made it a haven of silence that he was rather fond of, it was so much easier to think, accompanied by the faint scratching of pencil on paper, and the occasional twitter from a bird flying over head.

He was intently typing into his PDA, preparing a character for a SOTF-TV RP. He didn't know much about RPing, except that it sounded like improv theatre, only with writing. Suzanne had mentioned it and he had looked it up, and become quite taken with the idea. What better way to while away the hiatus than by making your own SOTF? So he sat. He really had very little down on his word document. He knew the limitations of his writing style; He tended to write with a very dark, but cold and clinical tone. This apparently made him perfect for writing "numb" character, the people who became so desensitised they became almost zombie like. That was good, but it constricted him slightly, so he decided he would write a character that mirrored him. A scrawny, useless runt who drools over the hottest chick in class. Bullied every day of his life for...

Well, he didn't want to use autism, after all, this was escapism. What are the main things you'd be bullied for? Race, looks, religion, sexuality, intelligence, being a general jackass... The list continued, but he already knew what it'd be. He would be gay. Wait, that clashed with the earlier thing about pining over girls. Bisexual. Best of both worlds.

Interests? Well, having him be a SOTF nerd was appealing, but he didn't want him to be a mini him afterall. RPing? Yeah, that'd be pretty cool. Maybe he could have a scene where his character could make a character? That'd be hilarious, he could break the fourth wall subtly and everything. He grinned at the thought.

Oh, crap. A name. What should he be called? Well, his name began with Z, so maybe his characters name would begin with an A? Symmetry. He liked that little bit of symmetry. Aiden? No, that sounded really retarded. Aaron? Well, put that on the maybe pile, but it's too plain. Alan? No, that still sounded bad.

It'd have to be Aaron till he could come up with a good name. Aaron what though? Smith-something. Smith was such a common name and was under used, but it needed sprucing up. Well, now he thought about it, Smith wasn't half bad on it's own. Smiths. That was it! Aaron Smiths.

He smiled and continued to tap in more of his back story, but was interrupted by Sue's musings on her own characters name. He was about to comment on how it sounded very archaic, like a heritage name from some aristocratic background when someone beat him to it

That was the thing about silence, it is very fragile, one nudge and the conversations start. Oh well, better make the best of it.

"Maybe Sapphire? That's a more modern, but simmilar name" he said, pausing to let her mull it over before continuing. "Hey, whilst we're on the subject of names, what do y'all think of "Aaron Smiths"?" he asked

'Wah! Who was that?!' Suzanne nearly jumped in surprise as she heard someone respond to her comment about her SotF-TV character's name. It wasn't a voice she recognized, which really only made it worse. She was used to people just walking past and flat out ignoring her when she muttered to herself, so when someone actually responded...it felt kind of weird. She wasn't sure what to say...after all, he was only trying to be helpful. She turned to get a better look at who was speaking and saw a fellow classmate of hers (at least, she assumed he was) sitting nearby. He was kind of short (although certainly taller than her) and had messy black hair, but he seemed kind enough. At least, it didn't look like he would suddenly begin to bully her.

One of her friends, Zach, chimed in with his own suggestion and Suzanne fidgeted a bit, wondering if would have been better to have just kept her big mouth shut. She wasn't upset that they were responding to her but...it made things feel really awkward. Zach she knew how to talk to...well, knew how to talk to more than the other boy. When you have a shared interest in a certain forum RP, it was easier to just exchange information and ideas even if those ideas were things like "How do you think he or she should die?" Telling someone else who had no idea about it (even though Survival of the Fittest was really popular) seemed...odd. You don't exactly tell strangers "I like writing up complex characters so that I can make more people feel bad for her when she dies in a gruesome and bloody manner."

Perhaps she wouldn't mention that at all. That seemed better. It was now that she realized she had been staring for a while without saying anything and she let out an embarrassed 'eep' before swallowing and quickly shaking her head. "W-Well um...actually it's...for a modern setting. I'm um...w-well, Sapphire's good too. But...I w-was actually planning on having a minor plot point t-that her parents wanted her to be u-unique so they gave her that name. B-But it led to bullying since it was a strange name so um...well, really she just shortens it to Sarah."

She quickly bowed her head and looked away, focusing her attention on her notebook so she could avoid what was probably an exasperated and irritated glare on the part of the boy who had brought up the fantasy aspect. She had to admit that it was a name more suited for a fantasy setting, but she wanted to use it. He was probably upset that she had spent so much time explaining it. "S-Sorry um...f-for talking so much. Y-You probably don't really um...need to hear all that."

Wait, what was she doing? She was trying to improve herself, wasn't she? And get better at talking to people? Stammering and apologizing wasn't a step in the right direction, was it? She gulped and tried to calm down her pounding heart and she pressed her hands down hard on her notebook to try to stop her fingers from trembling. She decided to talk to Zach then. Maybe talking to someone she really...kind of knew as a friend? would help her calm down.

"A-Ah well...um, Aaron Smiths is okay...I guess, but Smiths doesn't really...roll off the tongue that well, I guess? It...it kind of sounds awkward, actually, a-although that's probably because um...Smith is already common so people are used to it? Why um...why didn't you just choose Smith? I-It's normal, but then maybe that'll make people um...underestimate him. Y...You could use that as um...a s-sort of counter-point by making him unique through his activities or hobbies..."

She fell silent, looking back down on her notebook. 'One...one step at a time, I guess...'

Ben felt a prickle of unease as another person arrived. The newcomer represented an unknown element in an exchange that had already begun with him venturing out of his comfort zone. Still messing with the corner of his sketchbook, Ben reminded himself that was very nature of conversations. New people added their thoughts to the flow of ideas. He mused over this for a moment. He'd never been amazing at talking to people, but a few years back he at least could have done it without fumbling and over-analyzing.

Ben knew the words weren't exactly directed towards him, but he inhaled and spoke. "Sapphire might remind people of the stone. And what if you were green eyed and red haired? Then it would seem weird."

Glancing away from them, Ben leaned forward on the bench and kicked at the cement below. He could feel the girl watching him and the scrutiny itself was enough to make his heart beat a little faster. Only when she spoke, did he finally look back to each of them.

"Oh," Ben said, scratching his head. "So, it's for a story. Maybe her parents could have an appreciation for fantasy novels...or something."

He halted, more unsure then any emotion suited for glaring. "It's okay," he added a little too quickly after her apology. "I'm not very good at writing. It's interesting. To see the process, I guess."

Trailing off, Ben stared towards the ground. So much for getting any drawing done. This was most likely better, but in the midst of it, he was unable tell. At the very least he had chosen to speak, which set this interaction above anything forced his mother or a teacher might initiate.

He shook his head and angled it so he could study the both of them. Ben always took note of details. Of course, he'd never be so presumptuous as to draw a fellow student, but to incorporate small things into his art? Like glasses or a freckle? That was acceptable. It wasn't as if anyone else would notice or see his drawings anyway.

"Aaron Smith sounds like a codename for some secret organization agent. He would be perfectly normal. Blonde hair cut to specific measurements, blue eyes of the most regular shape, body of the most average weight. Absolutely nothing remarkable." Ben paused, brows furrowing. "Sorry..."

(Apologies for the short post, I'm just trying to keep the posts turning round. Dont want to bog you guys down afterall)

"Aaron Smith.." He said quietly. Yeah, that sounded better, more authentic. An orthodox name for an unorthodox kinda guy.

"Aaron Smith sounds like a codename for some secret organization agent. He would be perfectly normal. Blonde hair cut to specific measurements, blue eyes of the most regular shape, body of the most average weight. Absolutely nothing remarkable."

That... That actually sounded pretty cool.

"No, I might run with that if you dont mind that. Averageness would kinda fit with the whole "Desperately trying to fit in" angle I was going to use" He let out a self depreciative chuckle before continuing "After all, I have expierience in it"

He hit save on the PDA and shut it down. He really didnt feel like adding any more backstory, it was depressing him a little. He was essentialy writing a self insert, and that made him feel dirty. After all, every self insert was quintessentially a Mary Sue in disguise, and he definately didn't want to associate himself with what was the writing equivelant of Satanism.

"A-Ah...that might be a good idea, I guess..." Suzanne murmured as she heard Ben's suggestion, quickly scribbling down in a small note at the bottom of her page. And then the boy quickly said she didn't need to apologize, which Suzanne appreciated but really she probably should have. I mean...he looked like he had other things he wanted to do and she had disrupted his work by muttering out loud. But he didn't seem that bothered...but still, she had butted into his business...or at least distracted him and she felt bad about it.

Zach seemed more okay with it, though, and a slight smile appeared on Suzanne's lips as she heard his enthusiasm over the new idea. She was glad he was happy about it...she hadn't known Zach for long, but they both liked roleplaying and she had actually introduced him to the Survival of the Fittest forum that the two of them would be participating on. She was looking forward to it, really. The next batch seemed like it would be really fun to interact with character-wise, at least.

It was silent again. Suzanne was feeling awkward...after the whole breaking the ice thing with character ideas, simply falling back into silence seemed...so wrong. But she didn't want to be the one to initiate a conversation...it was her fault that this whole thing had started in the first place. She gulped. But this was still a chance to...try to get better at talking to people and just remaining silent wasn't going to help her in the long run. So she opened her mouth again.

"S-So um...s-sorry, I never um...g-got your name. I'm um...Suzanne Lanford." She smiled timidly at the unknown boy. "It's um...it's nice to meet you."

Ben grinned. It was, well, nice to have his suggestions accepted, even if one of them had been given jokingly. He noticed the impending silence and shifted on the bench. Was that the difference between the socially adept and inept? That the former never ran out of things to say, while the latter ran out of subjects far too fast? Ben didn't know. Like the roleplaying of the other two, his interests weren't an appropriate topic for first meetings. What would he say? Oh, the crook of that person's elbow would be so fun to draw. While I'm at it, I could also draw their entire circulatory system.

Not noticing they hadn't even exchanged names, Ben was glad when the girl took the conversational reins. "I'm Ben. Ben Grayson," he said, fidgeting by absently picking at the fabric of his pants.

Thereafter, the quiet loomed again. Ben looked across the school grounds, feeling as though it were his responsibility to bring something up. They'd just gotten done with classes, so he decided against that. In the end, he chose what everyone talked about.

"So, um, how about that Survival Of The Fittest?"

He carefully attached no adjectives to his question. Some people--namely Ben's mother--decried the show as the downfall of civilization. Though he found it interesting, it was better to start neutrally. Just in case.

Jake ruffled his wet hair, reeking of chlorine, as he stepped out into the sun. He hated it when his hair was still wet from swim team practice, when wet his blond hair curled itself into awkward shapes, clinging to his neck, and if he attempted to dry it got all weird and fluffy. He was fairly convinced that this is what girl hair was like, and maybe that's why they spent so much time doing it?

Geez, what was he, one of those old stand up comedians who thought things were funny by pointing them out? He could barely remember the last comedian that didn't bore the audience to tears, but could remember when "Celebrity Comedian Pie Throw" had a brief, but popular run. The things networks will come up with to match the success of SOTF-TV, it's crazy.

It was a warm afternoon and Jake smiled as the wind began to dry his hair. He could hear the murmur of students ahead, and wondered if it was anyone he knew. He saw Zach bent over his PDA, talking to some guy and girl whose names Jake couldn't remember. They were discussing names or something, had Zach gotten the tiny girl pregnant? What? No, that couldn't be possible, right?

Sex to Jake was like a rubix cube, he wasn't really in a hurry to solve the puzzle, per se, but he really enjoyed trying to get everything to line up so he could. He figured if sex was this giant puzzle to him...there was no way that Zach could have it all figured out already. If anything, at least, Jake would feel kind of left out. If talk in the locker room was any indication, he was fairly convinced that everyone else was doing it.

"Hey Zach," Jake stopped in front of little group, smiling in a friendly way. "What are you guys talking about?"

He listened to the silence and considered opening his PDA again to pass the time. Should he tell them his name? It'd be a bit forced, a bit stupid, a bit autie. He needed to seem normal. Well, not seem, he needed to be normal. But that was never going to happen.

Screw it. These people are about my rung on the social ladder, they can deal with me being a tad weird. He opened his mouth and was about to speak when

"So, um, how about that Survival Of The Fittest?"
Asked Ben.

Ah, now the metaphorical ball was in his court. He pulled the Book from his back pocket, showing off the new golden engraving he'd had put on the front. It wasnt actual gold, that was far too expensive. It was a metal alloy, Ormolu. It was a mix of copper, zinc and tin. And was very, very cheap.

He was suprised that the boy even had to ask. It was no secret that he loved SOTF more than anything in the world. Sure he had downplayed it over the years, as he had wormed his way into the predominantly neurotypical society that was school life, but the knowledge never really left anyones minds.

"It's one of the two things my life revolves around" He said. "Oh, and my name is Zachariah, Zachariah Johnston"

Just as he finished, Jacob walked in on the group. He placed his PDA on the bench. Two rather distinct rungs of the social ladder, and two very diffrent ways of interacting with people.

Oh the joys.

"Hey Zach, What are you guys talking about?" Asked Jake, coming to a halt just infront of the merry little band.

"Hi Jakey" He said, keeping his tone light and friendly as he tried to figure out a normallish way of talking to them. It could've been worse though, Jake was atleast accepting of him for all of his flaws and quirks, not like Glen or any of the Jackasses that made his life a watered down version of hell.

He wrenched his mind back to the question at hand

"Oh, Just RP-ing." He said, before realising that the arty kid probably hadn't the faintest what he was on about "Roleplaying that is" He said.

Wait, didn't Roleplaying have another connotation? Something that was dirty or something?

Nah, he was probably just overcomplicating stuff.

(OOC: Sorry for taking so long, I was kind of uninspired >_>)

"A-Ah...nice to meet you, Ben." Suzanne said with a bright smile as she heard the boy give his name. She wished her stutter wasn't so...prevalent, but it was just something she had to deal with. Being nervous made her stutter and virtually anything dealing with people made her nervous...so she'd just have to try to make herself less nervous. That was the point of this whole thing, after all. But then after the exchanging of names, there was nothing she had in mind. Conversations weren't her thing and she felt a wave of relief wash over her as Ben asked about Survival of the Fittest.

She let Zach answer it first, looking down at her notepad as she quickly jotted down several notes. After all...what did she think about it? Well, she liked it enough to join a forum RP that emulated the experience and was right now busy thinking of a character to play in that RP...who with her luck, would probably get offed within the first weeks of playing and she'd have to come up with a satisfying death. But it wasn't like she hated the show...besides random human rights naysayers, there wasn't anyone who hated Survival of the Fittest. It was heart-pounding suspense, drama, and action all in one show and the fact that it was actually real just made it better. It removed that last wall between the viewer and the show...the wall the mind erects when it says "This is all just fake." Knowing Survival of the Fittest was real?

That added everything to it.

"S-Survival of the Fittest well um..." Suzanne paused, trying to come up with the right words. "I w-watch it sometimes. It's...um, a really good show to watch so I mean...there's just n-never been anything like it, right? It's...so gripping, you know?"

She fell silent. It wasn't exactly everything that she felt about the game...but it wasn't like she was going to admit that she wrote fanfiction based on the television show and liked to talk to other people online about it. Those were more...personal in nature and Suzanne really didn't want to let too many people know, lest she get ostracized for being weird or creepy or anything like that.

It was at this time that another boy...Jake, if Suzanne's memory (and Zach's greeting) served her well. She had seen Jake and Zach hang out with each other a few times, but never really...talked to the former. It was probably wrong to not talk to a friend of a friend, but that's just the way thing seemed to work out. Still, she managed a shaky smile at Jake's direction and stammered, "W-Well...we were just talking about um...Survival of the Fittest. A-And roleplaying like um...Zach said."

"Good to meet you both," he said, offering a smile to Zach and Suzanne.

It turned out Ben needn't have worried about his question, listening as each gave their sentiments. They reminded him his mother was the exception and not the rule to popular opinion about Survival of The Fittest. Still, he wasn't sure if it would be wise to go around admitting that it was the deaths that fascinated him the most. The horrendous ones in particular, where a viewer might get a glimpse of things that shouldn't be seen outside of a hospital room? Yeah, those moments would receive many replays from Ben.

Besides that, there was also a hint of rebelliousness and escape in watching the show. While his mother took every opportunity to lambaste the whole thing, Ben would look forward to a new episode and let his mind wander.

His own summation of the show proved less than enlightening. "I agree," he said when Suzanne finished, adding a paltry, "It's amazing..."

Ben looked over as the newcomer arrived. Not recognizing him, he let Zach and Suzanne do most of the talking. "Yeah," he then murmured, thinking it was better to say something than nothing at all.

He smiled as the other two reacted well to Jake. Well, well was overstating it a little. Perhaps "not badly" would be more accurate. He knew that Jake was quite possibly the most friendly, welcoming guy in all existence. The people who he dealt with however, weren't exactly the prime examples of open-mindedness. Of course, he'd never share this with Jake, he would be bound to cut himself off from them, and sadly, they made up the more socially acceptable half of the school. Apparently the other two hadn't had the bad experiences he'd had, or they actually didn't know Jake. Both were good, though he hoped it was the first.

He listened to the pair talk. Sue's stutter was as painfully present as ever, Ben seemed to fade into the background, as he always did. Pretty quickly, a silence broke. He knew that he'd have to say something before the simple lack of talking reached a point where no-one would start talking again. Awkward silences were almost second nature to him, having caused more than his fair share. He would normally have just let the silence wash over him and gone back to writing, but Jake was one of the people he sort of used as a litmus test for how his situational awareness skills were holding up. If he fucked up, Jake would tell him somehow, but wouldn't consider him any weirder.

It was as good a time as any to practice small talk. He looked around for something he could start a conversation off of.

He noticed that his hair was wet. Swimming? It was the only way anyone ever got wet around here. Everyone was far too grown up for water fights. They threw eggs, and mostly at houses, not people.

"So, uh, you went swimming?" he said tentatively, looking to his body language in the vague hope of recognising anything.

"So, um, how'd it go?" he asked.

Roleplaying? Jake searched his mental dictionary for that one and remembered that it was usually people on the internet pretending to be other people. Jake himself didn't do that sort of things, but he could understand people who did, it seemed to him like a big collaborative writing effort.

He cheerfully ignored the others' vaguely chilly reception towards him and absentmindedly ruffled his still wet hair.

"Yeah, I'm this close to beating my time but I guess I just need to be a little bit faster, you know?" Jake cleared his throat and looked at the other people in the conversation, it was totally rude to just come in and commandeer a conversation like that.

"So roleplaying, huh? What do you guys roleplay?" He was really hoping that was the proper terminology for that, sticking to the basics seemed safe.

[[Shawn Morrison Continued From: Rescue Mission.]]

Birds chirped in the background, quite pleasantly. The sunlight felt warm against his skin. The air, light and breezy. It was the perfect day. Calm, soothing, and relaxed; Shawn was lost in his thoughts. He sat cross-legged at one of his favorite quiet spots of the school, for when he just wanted to be alone for a bit. It was outside; a grassy area near a few benches, usually quiet especially after school. Shawn was in a zen like state, meditating in a healthy yoga posture as his step father Renaud, showed him, all under a single young oak tree. He was a small ways off from the benches near the walk way and from the school pool area.

Nearby talking snapped him out of the trance. This area was usually kinda quiet, but today there seemed to be an unexpected group of four huddled together near one of the benches, talking. Shawn blinked one or two times before recognizing one of the bodies. There was no doubt that the tall blonde guy, with the wet hair was his pal, Jacob Langston who had just finished swim practice. Shawn was supposed to leave school pretty soon, but his day dream just moments earlier, gave him an idea for the weekend. He figured he’d ask Jake if he was interested in hanging out and coming along.

Shawn got up and headed toward the kids who were all looking at their notebooks and writing. One of them had a computer device thing with him. He heard the term role-play being mentioned too, which wasn’t something Shawn was very familiar with.

“Hey, Jake, what’s up man… Hope I’m not interrupting.” Shawn turned to the rest of them.

“Hey all...” Shawn said in a very relaxed manner while adjusting his bandanna a bit, looking like some kind of tree hugger for sure. “What’s sup?“ A few of the group seemed to be uncomfortable with the sudden increase of numbers. He didn’t think he knew any of them too well, maybe just the faces. He wasn’t very good at remembering people’s names, even those he’s talked to. Cause well; Shawn could talk with pretty much anyone at school who wanted to talk with him, whether or not he knew them really, as long as they seemed like good people at least. He vaguely recalled speaking with the kid who owned the computer device a few times.

He’d just make this quick and then leave soon for their sake. He turned back to Jake. “I just had this rad dream that gave me the urge to see some animals…” He trailed off. Then spoke again.

“Wanna go to the Zoo this weekend? Hang out.”

He wasn't a particularly strict or extreme vegan, like his father or a few others were. Merely a vegetarian, who didn't think all Zoo's were that bad, since they did take care of the animals really well and gave awareness and knowledge of animals. The Bryan City Zoo was a particularly open and good one.

He looked at the rest of them. Not wanting to be rude, Shawn Morrison, in his typical Shawn Morrison style spoke to these random classmates as if they were long time friends. A few ‘No thank you's' were bound to follow.

“You guys wanna come too?”
