Six days had passed since Gemma arrived in the city of her dreams. The first few had been spent wandering the streets, taking in the old, somewhat-familiar sights, sounds, and smells; and the nights were spent in the cheapest hotel available. On day four, she had found a modest apartment for a decent price, and had since been searching for a place of employment while attempting to furnish her sparse home. It was about 4PM when the sign in front of a fairly large building caught her eye. A small smile played on the edges of her mouth as she spoke aloud. "The Golden Cockerel," she said, before looking back at the building. "Odd name for a hospital..." She trailed off and thought silently, even one that caters to Lycans. Gemma had dropped out of medical school when she'd been infected, but she was still very intelligent, and did wish to complete her degree after getting settled in. There was only one way to know if they would hire a med school dropout, though, so she made her way to the front door. In all honesty, she was only expecting something like clerical staff, or perhaps even less. The girl behind the front desk didn't look terribly busy, not to mention she was the only person around who looked like hospital personnel, so Gemma approached her. "Excuse me, miss. Perhaps you can answer my question, or direct me to someone else who can. I was wondering if there might be any job vacancies." |

The receptionist glanced up, sniffing the air slightly as a new scent wafted in from outside, and her eyebrows raised at the new arrival – a young werefox. Standing slightly so she could see over the tall counter properly, the wererat observed the girl, checking her over before she spoke, she didn’t seem injured or anything. A polite smile decorated her features as she greeted the woman, “Good evening, mademoiselle.” As the fox began to speak, a brow raised at her before the receptionist took a quick glance at the roster. Usually Ovid would be the one to speak to, but he’d gone MIA some time ago. Thankfully though, Doctor Deveraux was on. The young cougar had taken charge of the hospital in a way some time ago anyway, since she placed much more effort and hours into making sure the hospital ran as smoothly as possible, even with its limited staff. It was no secret among the office staff that the good doctor often donated some money from her own pocket into resources as well. It probably shouldn’t have been any surprise that she was working overtime again as well. As Janice picked up the phone to see if Emilia was in her office, sheer divine intervention stepped in as her eyes flickered toward a flash of gold mane darting into the cafeteria, ”Come with me please, miss.” The wererat led the young woman toward the canteen and cleared her throat as she neared the doctor, ”Excusez-moi, Doctor. But this young lady was wondering if someone could assist her. She wishes to enquire about any job vacancies.” Emilia had been considering what she wanted to get to tide her over until she went home as she heard a couple of people approach, and her eyes darted toward them, smiling politely at Janice, “Good evening.” Though cheery, she was also a little worn out – but a little food and some coffee could fix that. Glancing around the rat, she noticed the werefox and raised her eyebrows slightly, “What kind of position?” |

Gemma glanced around the cafeteria and noted that there weren't too many people seated nearby. Clearing her throat as she stepped forward, she extended her hand in greeting to the doctor, whose scent was definitely that of an animal, though Gemma wasn't sure what. She nearly slipped back to her native Italian due to nerves, but caught herself in time. Speaking at an octave where her voice could be heard clearly, but not broadcast to the entire room, she introduced herself. "Hello Doctor," she started with an uncertain smile. "I am Gemma, and I just moved here from Italy. I was in medical school there, but did not graduate due to certain circumstances, so I am really looking for anything you might be able to offer - clerical, assistant to someone, I will really take anything available." After a quick moment's pause, she tacked on, "I do plan to continue my degree here, but finding a place of employment is my first priority." Silently, she hoped that available positions would not be limited to janitorial work, though she begrudgingly admitted to herself that she would have to take it, if that were the case. Tucking a stray piece of brown hair behind her ear, she stood nervously, hoping that this doctor would take a chance on her. Staring at the floor, she said, "I was also wondering if someone here might be able to tell me if there are any others in Paris... like me." Though Gemma was typically a fairly confident creature, she was still quite unsure of herself in this new situation, and didn't know how to address it, mentally or verbally. |

The extended hand was met with Emilia’s as she smiled warmly. She noted a hint of hesitation for a brief moment before the woman spoke in accented English – not too dissimilar to her own, but enough to know that she wasn’t from France, “Doctor Emilia Deveraux.” As Gemma began to talk, Emi listened while picking out a few things to nibble on and gesturing for the cafeteria hand to make her a coffee. Her gaze slid back to the fox as she mentioned that she’d been studying in medical school but had dropped out. Though, what mostly had her interest was the idea of an assistant. With everything getting busier these days it would help to have someone around the hospital that could help Emi out even with basic organisation so she wasn’t running around chasing her tail all the time. She didn’t say anything yet though, allowing the girl to continue. To be honest, even if she had no qualifications at all she would probably be able to get a job doing something, even if it was just cleaning. The Cockerel was severely understaffed and as tight as they were on budget, they still had certain standards they had to maintain. Emi had a few ideas for fundraising, but she hadn’t had a moment to properly plan or organise anything still. Emi’s attention was diverted for a brief moment as her coffee was placed on the counter and she picked it up along with some chips and nodded to the receptionist for her to return to the desk, then gestured for Gemma to join her, “Come, sit. I am just on a very quick break at the moment, but have a little time to speak.” Leading the way to a table that was further away from others who were sitting in the room, she took a seat and relaxed back a moment before steadying her gaze on Gemma again, “Forgive me for prying, but your reason for dropping out... was it because of your infection?” It was a wild stab, but seemed the most logical to Emi, and was something she would need to know considering everything going on in France. This wasn’t the safest place for a newer shifter. “Personally, I cannot see a problem with giving you a job. We need all the people we can get, unfortunately everywhere is suffering at the moment. However, without formal qualifications the best I can do is make you an assistant for now. After you are re-enrolled and we are confident with your control and ability, you would also be an intern under observation if that suits. But I would need to see your results so far as well.” Pausing for a moment, Emi took a sip of her coffee and rolled her neck a little. She really had to stop putting in so many long hours, but it was difficult in her position. A small smile greeted the werefox again as she considered the other question she’d asked though, “In regards to local Skulk, I can certainly assist you there. The Reynard is a friend of mine.” |

Gemma instantly relaxed-a little-at the invitation to have a seat. She hadn't been immediately shoved out the door; that was a good sign. Settling into one of the hard plastic chairs common in hospital cafeterias, Gemma crossed her legs and rested against the back of the seat. In spite of her earlier question that assumed Dr. Devereaux would know her condition, the doctor's question about infection caught her a little off guard. Yes, it only happened a few months ago. I was confused and hurt... and didn't know where to go. I came here because I swore to myself after a visit several years ago that I would return. The young girl's face broke into an appreciative smile. In spite of lycanthropy being relatively legal, she assumed that the hospital probably did not receive as much funding as those that served humans, because humans tended to care less about those different than they. The job would therefore probably not be the best-paying, but it was a job and it would pay. "Merci, Dr. Devereaux, for giving me a chance. Once I get settled in, I would like to speak with you about attending school. She watched the doctor as she stretched tired muscles and sipped on what was probably much-needed coffee. "The... Skulk?" she asked, with a confused expression. Of course, there had to be a name. Werewolves, like their animal counterparts, assembled in packs, that was easy enough to know. Though... the only name she had known for a group of foxes was a den... this word "skulk" was new. "And I assume the Reynard is a leader? I would very much like to meet him, but as you said, you are only on a break now, so it will have to wait. When would you like me to report for work or training? Or is there a more formal hiring procedure I should follow?" Once the doctor had given Gemma hope for being hired, she was more comfortable in the seat and had lots of questions that she hoped to have answered. |

Emilia nodded with a sympathetic smile as the other young woman confirmed that it was the infection that had distracted her from her studies, “Oui, I thought as much. Do not worry, there are many who have been in your position, all they need is a little help and understanding.” The blonde shrugged lightly as she nursed her coffee, “I was attacked and infected during my study as well, and had a newborn, but you would be surprised how far a little determination and friendly support will get you.” Emi decided she already liked Gemma and would try to help her – she was a sweet woman, and would probably make an excellent assistant. She seemed the kind who would work hard to do their best and there weren’t enough of those people around as far as the cougar was concerned. “We will certainly work on enrolling you back into University – if you have studied for a few years already, then there is no sense in throwing it in now,” Emi chuckled with a small wink before taking another sip of her coffee and considering what else would have to be organised. She was still in the process of tidying things since Ovid had disappeared; an event that had technically left her in charge of the hospital now. Though, the cougar still had yet to step into any such role formally. She was trying to keep things low key for a little while longer. She glanced up from her thoughts though as Gemma spoke up again, “Oui, the Skulk is the fox group around here, and their Reynard is the leader. If I finish early this afternoon you could meet me back here and I could take you to his establishment to meet him if you wish.” The question of when the young fox could start was met with a slightly larger smile from the blonde though as she relaxed back in her seat, “Well, you could come in as early as tomorrow so that we can register you as staff, and so that I can look over your current school results and work out where you are best suited for the time being, as well as discuss what more you will need to complete at University. From there we can work out the roster and then you can begin work once we have done all that. How does that sound?” It seemed rather obvious that Gemma needed the job, and not just for the money. Emilia could still remember needed a goal or purpose after the confusion of being infected; it was a common feeling. |

"Merci boucoup, Dr. Devereaux." Gemma released a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. She felt that discovering this hospital and having this meeting with Dr. Emilia Devereaux would turn out to be one of her better choices in moving to Paris. "I would very much like to come back this evening, but I do not wish to interrupt if you are still busy working. Perhaps you could call me if you have a bit of free time?" she asked while rooting in her purse for a scrap of paper on which to write her cell phone number. While she wrote on the top leaf of a post-it note, she glanced back up at Dr. Devereaux. "Merci, again, for this opportunity, Doctor. She finished writing and pushed the yellow square of paper across the tabletop. "Please, do not call unless you are free. If I do not hear from you, I will return in the morning. I am eager to begin working and to have a normal life again." She stood and extended her hand before turning to leave the cafeteria and the hospital and head back to her apartment. She needed to make preparations for meeting the leader of the skulk and for beginning her new job and new life in Paris. |
