This was both easier and harder than he had thought it would be. On the one hand, he was being allowed to drive. Yet they were positioned in a way to make him uncomfortable. Inside the car left the vampire with a few less options as far as defense was concerned. There were still options available though, so Nathan settled back into the seat to get comfortable. He frowned only slightly as he drove at normal speed through the cities’ lighted streets. Reaching over, the vampire suddenly turned the radio off. There was nothing against the music, besides the fact that any sign from what the music stood for would burst into flame when wielded by someone with faith in it and they were close to him. As the buildings began to thin out, the car picked up speed, quickly rising above the posted speed limit. Nathan really hated to go slow. It took a few minutes of silence, but finally Nathan seemed to relax fully. “Nathan is my real name, and has been my name for the last seventeen years. I should be able to use the identity for another sixty or seventy years. Maybe even eighty or ninety, with the way human life has been extending in the recent centuries.” His eyes stayed on the road, though he didn’t need to keep them there, it was just simpler that way, less threatening he felt. “If you insist on knowing the name I was born with, that name was Matthias Vesli. I was born sometime around the middle of the eight century, and records weren’t well kept back then, so I doubt you’d be able to trace it.” There, his truth was out about the whole name thing. Whether they chose to believe or not was their choice. Buy now, they were outside of the city, cruising down the country road with the trees blurring past them as Nathan pushed the car to it’s comfortable limit of ninety-five miles per hour. |

As the car sped up, Carina clung to her seat. Though she hadn't exactly been the best driver, at least she had driven a lot slower than Nathan was doing. She fought the desire to simply scream at him to sop the car, knowing that doing so may result in her being without a vehicle...well, it was more than a vehicle now, it was practically their home, a place they could sleep safely at night (so long as the doors were locked.) The city lights quickly became blurred with each other, leaving ribbons of light in the sky. Carina gritted her teeth, map completely forgotton as she struggled to stop herself freaking out at the fast (and increasing) speed they were moving at. She had not even noticed the silence in the car, however Nathan's voice caused her to look away from the terrifying sight of the blurred surroundings outside. She wasn't entirely sure of she believed him...not about his name now, but about his age. He acted like he had been alive for longer than the average human...but he was undead or something right? Shouldn't he have rotted, at the very least? Was he more than a century old? Her suspicions were confirmed when he stated he was born in the eighth century. Carina fidgeted uncomfortably. That made him older than...it was impossible! At least her mind was off the road. The hum of the engine sounded a little strained to hr, an indication of its limits or perhaps that it was badly in need of some servicing. It was only after she started recognizing the outsides of the car (her eyesight finally adjusting and catching up with her mind) that she finally relaxed, the car moving at a fast but now steady 95m/h. Carina could not recognize their surroundings, much less which turns and twists they had taken out of the city. Swallowing to get rid of the dryness in her throat, Carina spoke in a very timid voice. "How far away from your place are we?" She asked, not bothering to ask about the location. |

As uncomfortable as she felt about going off who knows where with a vampire they’d just met, Mary simply stayed silent and remained aware of both the driver and of any landmarks she would be able to commit to memory as they left the city. The longer they were in the car, the more uneasy she felt – though she’d smirked a little when Nathan had turned the music off. Too bad, it would’ve been interesting to see if music really had an effect on his kind. As the car sped up once leaving the clustered buildings of the main city, Mary tensed up slightly and put a bit more effort in trying to remember what route they were taking, though it was difficult from the back seat. She’d noticed Carina becoming slightly anxious as well which didn’t help her to relax, but only agitated her more. Then the silence was broken as Nathan began to explain how old he was, followed by his birth name, which Mary made sure to repeat in her mind until she was sure that it wasn’t going to be forgotten. She didn’t doubt that he was telling the truth at the moment, but that made her even more wary since often one didn’t divulge information unless they didn’t believe people would be leaving in one piece. Carina’s question and any possible answer to it weren’t really heard by the other woman as she tried to push down the darker urges that rose inside her mind, and she turned her attention back to outside and continued to keep count of how long they’d been driving. Despite knowing that she wouldn’t really be able to find her way around if they had to escape, she at least had hope that where there were roads, there were place they led to. It would have to do for now. After some time though, the car turned off the main road and onto a smaller track and Mary’s attention perked as she noticed that the woods were thick enough to block the sight of the road from wherever they were going. The seclusion didn’t sit well with her, but right now it wasn’t as though she could tell him to turn back. Mary just had to trust in her sister’s judgement and be comforted by the fact that at least if worst came to worst then they knew how to take care of things – as loathe as she was to know that part of her was capable of doing some brutal things. Still, it was strange to be living so far out when she was certain most vampires tended to stay clustered, “Are you hiding from the others, Matthias?” Mary asked absently, more voicing her thoughts than anything, though it would be an interesting thing to know if he was. |

”How far away from your place are we?” It was a fair enough question, and he had no reason to deny them the information now that they were on their way. “About ten more minutes. It would be less, but I did not want to push your car beyond its limits.” If they were going to stay, he would definitely have to look into getting them a new car or two. He felt truly sorry for the car they currently had, despite their obvious need of the car. Silence reigned again until he pulled into the long drive back to his current residence. ”Are you hiding from the others, Matthias?” Nathan smirked as he got out of the car, shutting the door behind him. “I am not really hiding so much as I am staying away from others of my kind. Most humans avoid other humans that can do things I can. Imaging that magnified by centuries of distrust of magic and then add into the mix a vampire that can tap into the maelstrom of the Arcanum and wield it to their will. I am obviously not well liked by those that know me or know of me. However, they also know that I would be a rather dangerous adversary.” “That makes me tolerated, but only liked by a handful of other vampires. I stay out of their way, and they stay out of mine.” Just about then, an elderly gentleman, clearly human, exited out the front door. He was dressed in a well fitting black suit with a grey tie, sturdy black leather shoes. Nathan raised a hand to the man, waving absently. “Andrew, we are going to have a few guests for the indeterminable future. I would like you to meet Rose and Ashleigh, and if you could treat them as you treat me, I would very much appreciate it.” ”Of course sir, it would be my pleasure.” “Thank you Andrew.” Nathan turned back to the two young women, inclining his head. “Andrew will be able to get either of you anything you need. I hate to cut our meeting short, but there are some matters I must attend to. I would prefer you did not go, but if you need to go back to the city for anything, I hope you will let Andrew take you.” Standing straight, Nathan turned away from the two, walking quite normally inside the residence. Andrew awaited them expectantly, a warm smile on his face. ”It isn’t very often that we get company; I hope you can stay for awhile. Mr. Baxton seems quite pleased to have the two of you visiting with us. Do you have any baggage that I could bring in for you?” |

The ten minutes that Nathan had promised seemed like an eternity, though admittedly, Carina felt no less relaxed when they arrived at his house then she had felt when they had been driving there. The long drive way seemed far too secretive – few houses had such a long driveway to their homes, which made her feel like he truly loved privacy. Her thoughts were expressed with Mary's words, though the answer that came from Nathan's mouth for the most part, made no logic or sense to her. Were vampires not supposed to know of magic? That idea seemed naïve to her. She kept her opinions to herself as their car rolled to a stop. She got out of the car hastily, glad to be in the fresh air, and also to see their surroundings. It was no where familiar, though the place was so isolated she was not sure that she could have found her way back to where they were even if she tried. The nervous knot wrenching her stomach only tightened. The waiter, Andrew, soon approached them both. He was very alive, and oh so very human. It was almost a relief to her to see someone normal there – it meant that Nathan was not, perhaps, a horrible person. The smallest of smiles appeared on her face as she looked at Andrew. It seemed the smile on his face was contagious, and Carina felt a little more relaxed to be out of the presence of Nathan. The vampire truly made her feel uncomfortable, primarily because he reeked of power and talked of things she couldn't begin to comprehend. Andrew's question nearly caused Carina to burst out laughing. Baggage? She wished she had brought something more for both of them. “No...I did not think to bring any.” Still, she reached into the car and took out what very little belongings they had, clutching to them as though they were the most precious things in the world – and to her they were...they were the only remaining proof that they'd once been a family, even if it had been so long ago and horrible for them both. Her eyes went to Mary's, primarily to reassure her, not that she was doing a great job of it at that moment. All she really wanted was a decents night sleep and perhaps even a shower, should she get that lucky. “Lets go...please.” Those words revealed just how tired she was. She had been trying to put it off for Mary's sake however their nights on the streets had been exhausting and stressful for her. At least if they were isolated, no one would find them. |
