Carina had not spent that much time outside the car since she and Mary had left. Stupidly, she hadn't thought of taking her father's money before she had sped off in the car, and so they had no place to stay and very little food to eat. During the day, Carina had often fallen asleep in the car, leaving Mary to do whatever antics she needed to. At night, Carina felt like she was practically a criminal - she broke into vending machines to get food for the both of them, and though the food certainly wasn't healthy, it kept them going and that was important. It had only been about a week since they had escaped, but Carina still had not brought up the topic of what had happened. There was a part of her that didn't want to know, and she wasn't sure whether Mary would be ready talk to talk about it. Carina certainly didn't want to talk about what she had done to their parents. But she did talk to Mary about other things...like the weather, the few good memories they had, and their 'powers' so to speak. On this particular night, the topic of necromancy had come up. Carina still had next to no knowledge about her powers, whereas Mary was slightly more...trained. Either way, the concept of it scared her still, and the more she thought about it, the more confused she became. It was with this that she had decided to go to Quills, a library/bookstore run by vampires no less. It had just...felt right to go there for whatever reason, and thankfully, the library had hundreds of books relating to the subject. So, sitting quietly at a table with an enormous pile of books on necromancy, alchemy, and any other so-called 'dark-art', Carina took hundreds and hundreds of notes, some of them true, but most of them false. "Mary, what was it again that you said you knew?" Carina questioned her sister, whilst reading a book that was telling her that raising the dead was a psychic's job. She handed her sister half a muesli bar. Edited by Carina Magdeline, Jan 5 2009, 06:13 PM.

The past week – had it really been a week? – had been a haze of constant watching and anxiety for Mary, who hadn’t left the Institution since she’d been taken there five years ago. It was strange being in the outside world again; having some semblance of freedom. She continuously expected it to be simply taken away from her. Though, while it bothered Carina to do things like break into machines to get food, to Mary it was simply instinct. To live, one had to eat – by whatever means necessary. You did what you had to in order to survive. Though, Mary hadn’t exactly been living to that rule as much – she found difficulty in sleeping at any time, feeling like she had to stay alert in case something happened or they came looking for her. Her appetite had also been lacking, but she ate on occasions so that Carina didn’t begin worrying about her too much. The idle chatter they’d had since being reunited had been refreshing for Mary, and she couldn’t get enough of it to be honest. She never thought to ask of their parents, simply accepting that wherever they were, they weren’t with the girls and wouldn’t be sending her away again. She also wanted to avoid the discussion of the ‘home’ she’d been living in, though it was mostly because despite knowing it wasn’t the most savoury of places, she didn’t remember much at all. Only the knowledge that filled her brain on various things to do with hers and Carina’s abilities. She wasn’t entirely certain on exactly when or where she’d learned it all – it was simply there. And for some reason it came as a surprise to learn that Carina still didn’t know much about necromancy or the dead. A deep part of Mary knew it was dangerous for her sister to continue on without knowing what she was capable of. She was a danger to herself and to others; and so the discussion on the subject led them to find a bookstore slash library (run by vampires, to Mary’s dismay), and find information on it since she didn’t think she could teach everything to Cari by herself. “Hmm?” Mary’s attention was taken from her task of keeping an eye out on their surrounds while Carina took notes as her sister spoke to her, “Which part?” She wasn’t paying much focus on Carina to be honest, much more concerned with the fact that they were in an area that reeked of vampire energy, in a bookstore where they were being watched by one of the undead things, while they read books on necromancy of all things. Something about the whole thing set off warning bells in her head – they stood out like a sore thumb. She wanted to raise her own power over the dead slightly to ward them away from the girls, but it could possibly backfire. “I know a lot of things Cari,” Mary tore her eyes from the vampire watching them and glanced at the line about psychics and snorted, “Psychics cannot raise the dead, but they can channel a soul or spirit...” Again, she didn’t know how she knew that; it was just... there. She leaned her head against her sister’s shoulder, glancing at the muesli bar that was offered before picking it up and taking a half-hearted bite while reading more of the page – though remained alert of any movement around them. It had been one of those rare instances that he had stumbled across an old friend of his. The friend in question was a vampire of course, and he had found out that Nathan was in Paris, suggesting a quaint library-like bookstore that had some of the materials he enjoyed most. Nathan, being the intellectual sort, and very much interested in said material, decided to give the shop a try and see what types of things they had for sale. This had taken him to Quills, which was where he stood in front of now. A quick glance around, his pupils subtly shifting from grey to red as the world around him suddenly took on multiple layers, being the best way to describe it. It gave the vampire a deeper insight into the area if he chose to examine it, but he wasn’t here for that, he was just looking for anything out of the ordinary. And also, books of real power had a subtle difference in the aura that surrounded it. Nathan’s own personal library, when looking at it like this, looked like it was on fire with azure flames because the auras were so strong. He didn’t expect to see that here, but he suspected at least a handful of books would flag his radar. Entering through the front door, Nathan greeted the vampire at the front with a brief smile and a nod. Moving further into the room, more to be out of the doorway incase others came in than anything else, the vampire started a slow sweep of the room, searching for any spots that were different, seeking out that azure flame. And indeed, almost instantly he found two volumes that he went over to gather up. Closer inspection showed one contained complex formulae for conjuring up the denizens of the abyssal underworld. Nathan wasn’t too keen on summoning demons, but he would rather have the text than someone else. The older teen-looking vampire was greedy in a sense, but only when it came to knowledge. Knowledge was, to him, the road to ultimate power. The second book, coincidentally, was a book on necromancy. It wasn’t a how-to manual or anything though, didn’t contain the key to unlocking infinite power through the use of a person’s necrotic gift. Instead it was a rather mundane-ish book in a way. But to a necromancer, or even to a lesser degree and animator, the book could be an invaluable source of knowledge. Glancing at the other books in the section; he could see why it was here instead of with other books on ritualized magic and practice. This book had been someone’s journal, or diary, from the late eighteenth century. Considering it might be an interesting read to get into the head of a necromancer and see what they write and thought about, Nate kept the book in his slowly growing pile. He stopped his searching instantly though, almost dropping the stack of eight or nine books he had gathered thus far. The blackish aura surrounding a girl at one of the tables couldn’t be, could she? ’Why would there be a necromancer in Paris? I realize I’m being gutsy being here and unoathed, but necromancers are kill on site. Doesn’t she know that? I can at least get out of jail free once, she doesn’t get a ‘get out of kill me’ at all. But this is too good an opportunity; I can hardly pass this up. And if she proves to be too much, or too uncontrolled, then I’ll do the Council a favor unknown to them.’ Moving over to the table now, Nathan set his stack of books on the opposite side of them, not even paying attention to Mary, his crimson gaze was focused entirely on Carina as he sat down uninvited. It was nice to be able to do things uninvited, refreshing almost. A quick glance at their reading material, and Nathan smirked slightly, not showing any fang as he looked back up to the girls, focusing on them both now. “Practitioners, or just reading up for the fun of the subject?” |

“But we can channel those souls and spirits too? Does that not make us psychic as well?” Carina questioned, thinking of the dead she had raised. Though she had not recently raised any dead properly, she did remember that the last time she had, they had been able to talk about their lives. Surely this meant she was channeling something – a dead body did not normally retain thoughts. Silently, she wished she knew what sort of powers they had... their father had certainly not accepted them, not in the least. Ignoring them had seemed to be the best policy at the time, however now, she was suffering for her father's fear. Carina knew, deep down, that she was putting her sister in danger by not testing her own limitations, and trying to gain control of whatever powers she had. Her thoughts were interrupted as she felt (rather than saw immediately), an undead presence approach, and her eyes shot away from her notes as she saw a very pale looking male with silver hair approach. It wasn't a zombie...but she could not seem to classify it as anything else. A confused look flashed across her face, and she took a glance at Mary. What in the heck? Her face was calm as the thing spoke to her, though the confusion in her eyes was evident. She wasn't even entirely sure what to answer to the question, though the look on Mary's face told her that she shouldn't say the former. “I wouldn't say any of these topics could be considered...fun.” She replied, not giving a real answer but not wanting to be rude. “Just curious, I guess. Ignorance is bliss, but knowledge is power.” |

“It is not quite the same...” Mary spoke softly in between small nibbles on the muesli bar, “The human brain can still retain memories of its life; that is what the zombie uses. You cannot change their thought pattern from what they believe though – it kind of... breaks them, I suppose is the right term.” She closed her eyes, only for a moment as she left her head rested on Carina’s shoulder while her sister continued her reading and note-taking. There were a few memories of talking to a couple of strange people in the ‘school’ she’d been left in. She’d gotten in trouble for doing so, but some of the things they said were interesting. “Some say the spirit or soul is the difference between a zombie and a vampire... maybe... but then that goes against what we have been taught and...” Mary cut off as she felt it approaching and her sharp gaze snapped to the young looking vampire as he paid far more attention to Carina than she’d have cared to see while he made himself comfortable, completely uninvited. Immediately Mary’s defences were up. Why was he looking at her sister with that strange look? Then he smirked at them and asked about their reading material. Mary’s eyes narrowed dangerously as one hand moved to Carina’s and gripped it tightly. Could he tell? But why would he be only watching her sister unless... Of course, Carina didn’t know much about herself, even how to hide her power from those who might see past just the physical. Still, she didn’t like it. And as Carina spoke to the silvery haired man, her sister’s eyes flashed black for a moment as she sent a metaphysical nudge toward the vampire. It would be like a sharp prod at his aura to send a chill down his spine, as though warning him off from doing anything he shouldn’t. Perhaps one of the sisters was inexperienced, but Mary knew deep down somewhere that she would and could do what she had to in order to protect Carina. “Agreed,” She answered softly in regards to Carina’s comment on knowledge. The sooner they started working on her power, the better off they would be. She glanced at his stack of books for a split second before watching him again, "Found interesting reading of your own?" |

Nathan’s head tilted to the left slightly, his brow furrowing. They didn’t think this was fun? Arcane studies in general were fun, especially when you could implement the things you learned. Though then his smirk left him, his face turning neutral, blank of all expression. He knew some people did not enjoy their magical aptitude; they thought it more a curse than a gift. Others had no knack for the various forms of mysticism that magic could encompass, and trying to accomplish what was simply beyond their scope made the task of learning about it an unenjoyable task that they could never truly accomplish. But he knew that this one had potential, the dark shroud over her aura signifying that she had the potential. The confusion she had, however, marked her as inexperienced in her natural born talents. He could almost tell that she didn’t know exactly what he was, just that her power called to him in some small way. He was not of the living, and her power spoke only to the dead. He wasn’t truly classified in either regards, he still maintained his soul, at least he liked to think so, otherwise certain aspects of his magical talents were true mysteries, and unexplainable. His crimson gaze shifted slightly then, something tugging at his extrasensory perceptions causing him to look at the other girl. It was too fast to register any shock in his eyes, the tiny spark of the other one’s power leeching from her aura like a dark lance to jab at his own aura quickly. The chill that ran down his spine like a tiny rivulet of ice water had a two-fold reason. The first was the jab itself, pushing against his aura, but not attempting to pierce. The second was that the other woman was also apparently a necromancer…and she had much more control than the other, much more experience. ’Two necromancers….’ Shock wavered his control; the crimson bleeding out of his eyes to leave vivid grey eyes in their place, the world suddenly losing the depth of understanding he could pull from it as it returned to normal. Had he not already been pale, he would have gone so now. It wasn’t that he was scared…it was more that he was surprised at the sudden emergence, the apparent depth of the other girls powers. Just who were these two young women? Suddenly Carina’s words broke through his thoughts, her comment about his reading material making the vampire turn to look at the books for a moment, lost for words. “Umm…yeah, I suppose you could say that.” Straightening in the chair, the vampire returned to looking at both women, a new respect for the pair almost evident in his eyes. With the subject on the reading material, Nathan could talk about this while concentrating his thoughts on just what action, if any, he should take about the two young necromancers that had found their way into what some would consider the heart of the undead community. “Well, some might think so at least. It all depends on what you consider interesting. I personally find every aspect of the Arcanum interesting. Anything from simple divination to demon summoning, and even your chosen material.” |

The sharp rise and fall of power that came from Mary made Carina realize that perhaps, the man before them was a threat. When Mary reached for her hand, Carina clutched it without a second thought, her eyes now narrowing to the man sitting opposite them. It didn't take much to figure out that there was something awry, Mary's reaction alone was warning enough. Even though they had not spoken much about things, Carina could recognize her own sisters reactions. She was greatful to have Mary there, and she was relieved that Mary seemed to know things about their powers, and the world around them. Unlike Mary, Carina only had the very, very basics underhand, though she knew that if she was feeling angry, sad, or anything heavily emotionally, she could do a lot more than she could normally. She hadn't brought up that topic with Mary yet, but something about this situation had reminded her to do so...but not at that moment in time. Carina felt her own aura flow over the undead creature, trying to figure out what the heck he was. If she had had better control, she might have been able to do it far more subtly, however as it were, her thoughts betrayed her and her powers reacted as such. She found him rather alluring, despite the warning bells that were going off in her head. The undead creature looked more alive than the dead she had raised before...and more curious, he seemed to retain a soul within him, quite contrary to what her sister had told her moments before. There were thousands of questions running through her head, but she wasn't entirely sure that she should voice them out loud. “Demon summoning?” Carina questioned the gentlemen, thinking of the zombies that she had raised. Though she had never thought of them as demons as such...she knew that the things she raised were certainly dead. And from what she had been told of demons, they were frightening creatures who committed only sins, murder being the top one. The thought was frightening to her, and it was beyond her why anyone would want to attempt rising one...though she could not deny that the creatures she had raised could kill if she commanded them to. And she had, in the past, but it was not something that needed to be said. Carina knew the man before her was not a demon, he felt too...dead, and the dead calmed her. She was almost certain that demons would not have the same effect...would they? Once again, she found herself wishing that she knew more. However, she knew that the man before them was a threat of some sort...and the fact that he researched arts that she too had been studying was not a good sign. Most of the books she had gotton were 'evil' in her mind, and many of them depicted things she wished she had not seen. Was this man truly interested in such materials? Carina did not want to know. “How is it that you retain a soul?” She queried the man quietly, linking arms with Mary tightly. If anything were to go wrong, she wanted Mary closeby. This way, she could be sure that nothing bad would happen to her. Also, she had found that keeping Mary close was a comfort. When they had been separated briefly, she had not felt as...energetic somehow. It was odd, but Carina had never taken much heed of it. |

At least Carina could read Mary’s reactions in regard to the new presence at their table, clasping her hand back instinctively as Mary silently warned the vampire. The contact soothed the more anxious young woman, pushing down something deep and dark that threatened to emerge with the possible threat lurking. Mary hadn’t wanted to admit to her sister that she thought there was something wrong with her yet – not wanting to scare away the person she felt most truly at home with. She hadn’t felt the sense of peace Carina brought with her presence for so long, she would not allow it to be taken away. Though she wished that Carina had more control over her own aura as she felt it naturally slipping over to study the undead creature and the ever protective twin released a hold on more for her join in order to join her sister’s. Perhaps not something she wanted to do, but at least she could this way keep Carina from leaking too much out or doing something accidental without realising. At the same time, it would allow the vampire to know just how much stronger the two girls were combined. It was a double-edged sword really; either he would take care around them and give them a certain level of respect since one necromancer was ‘boogeyman’ enough for a vampire let alone two combined, or he would try to kill them on the spot. The latter would not leave pretty results; since it wouldn't take a lot to use their combined strength to do what was necessary if she had to. Her gaze slid across to Carina at the question of his choices in reading material, “Demon summoning is not the same as... this.” She tapped the book they had open. She knew the differences, strangely – but again that annoying knowledge and not knowing where it came from. It seemed slightly strange that a vampire would be into such subjects, since most of them relied on their own powers that came with being one of the undead, but then there was a difference in his energy as well as she used their combined aura to study him more. She doubted it would have been the most pleasant experience for him, but then he had been the one to approach them, not the other way around. Carina’s next question caused Mary’s eyes to widen though, and glance at the other vampire at the front of the shop as well as the one sitting with them. Had she no idea what they were? Rather bluntly, Mary simply stated as her arm was linked with Carina's comfortingly, “He is a vampire.” The question had brought back to mind the things she’d learned again, however. Indeed, it seemed that vampires had souls, which meant that a lot of what the church had taught was rather... wrong. It was a concept that was slightly difficult for the devout Catholic to swallow; but then perhaps it was simply that their souls were tainted? However it worked, it rather just proved what she’d said earlier to be slightly true. When they raised zombies from the dead, there was no soul – vampires were much different. And this one was old... quite old. “I would say it seems strange that you show an interest in our chosen subject matter, but then considering all the other books,” She nodded towards his stack, “I guess you like to be knowledgeable.” Mary then gestured toward the pile of books she and Carina had already gone through, “Unfortunately, there really isn’t a lot of accurate information on what we are studying.” |

“Yes indeed. Demon summoning, though I study it more for way to prevent a summoning in process, or to turn back a demon already summoned. Demons are nasty creatures, far worse than anything you’ll find naturally walking the earth.” Nervousness was present, but so tightly controlled and hidden that outwardly he would appear completely at ease. This was made easier as they started to discuss his subject of interest. He nodded his head, agreeing with the other woman. Demon summoning was far different that necromancy. While it was true they sometimes did share similarities…the use of blood being a primary link between the two, as well as some sort of protective circle or ward (though animators and necromancers were inside the circle, whereas a demon summoner would decidedly want to stay outside of the circle), but beyond that, the result, and what was brought about were completely different. ”How is it that you retain a soul?” “He is a vampire.” Nathan glanced over toward his pile of books. Did he really have a soul? He thought he must, otherwise how did some of the things he was capable of work? But at the same time…when the sun was highest in the sky, his body seemed to die for a few hours. He knew the body still worked, but he was unaware of anything during this time, and had never been ‘woken’ from this state. But this period of time he was ‘not there’ had slowly diminished over the years, and he was, under normal circumstances, only ‘out’ for three hours. The rest of the day he was quite aware of everything, and mostly bored if he didn’t have anything to work on. But he was saved from answering with the other woman’s response about him being a vampire. Yet at the same time it rankled that one knew but the other had not. Did she need to keep her aura over him? Reason told the vampire he was only being irritated because they had him wrapped up almost completely but weren’t doing anything, or trying to do anything. Or worse was that in a way their power called to him, and he wanted that power in some way. He wasn’t sure how he wanted the power just that his being nearly cried out for it. Pulled from the siren-like call by Mary mentioning his books, Nathan turned back towards the women. “I have no ability with necromancy. I theorize that it is because I am a vampire, and in a way you could say that my very existence makes me some convoluted self using necromancer and it’s why the Arts do not allow me to channel any of that energy away from keeping myself ‘alive’. Other Arts though….” His eyes took on a faint reddish hue as his left hand was held out palm up. Centered above his palm, an inch off of it, a tiny flame danced with nothing fueling it. A tiny warmth could be felt from it as well, signifying the ‘real-ness’ of the flame. An instant later, the different feel in his aura faded as did the red hue from his eyes. His hand closed over the flame, and it too vanished. Reaching over into his stack of books, he pulled out the one book that wasn’t really a reading book, and set it on the table before them before sliding it over towards the girls. “This one is a diary from someone like yourselves…written over two hundred years ago. It doesn’t have any rituals in it, but I figure some of the best ways to learn is from experience, be it your own, or others.” Nathan leaned back then, the constant metaphysical scrutiny getting a tad bit on the annoying side now, like a constant buzz surrounding him. Utilizing the marks, Nathan pulled a bit at Magda, metaphysically pulling her closer so the feel of her beast would mingle with his own cool aura, in an attempt to confuse them and hopefully make them back off peacefully. ’I won’t keep this up long Magda, I have just stumbled upon something interesting that I need a little…support…with.’ |

“Vampire.” Carina repeated, the word unfamiliar to her. There had been some words that had been taboo whilst she had been in church, and that was one of them. Ignorance was for the best, in the school's eyes, and if nothing was said, the problem did not exist. Though the word itself was unfamiliar, Carina knew that it meant nothing good, simply from Mary's tone of voice. Carina wondered how exactly Mary knew about such things when Carina had never heard of them...what exactly had the church been teaching Mary? She simply nodded when Mary said there was not much accurate information on necromancy – most of the books contradicted each other horribly, and she wasn't entirely sure if any of the authors had any idea on what exactly they were talking about. The man stated that he had no ability with necromancy, though apparently he had experience in demon raising. Carina was afraid with that knowledge – surely demons were worse than zombies... She wasn't sure she wanted to know the results of a demon and zombie fight, if things went down that badly. Fear was at the front of her mind as she continued to subconsciously metaphysically 'wash over' the vampire. Despite the fear, she still wanted to figure out what he was, how he kept a soul, how he looked so alive...and knowing that she felt that way only made her more cautious around him. “A self using necromancer?” Carina stated softly, curiosity peaking once more. Was that even possible? Was it in the energy of vampires to do such a thing? She looked up to ask him, but her question did not fall past her lips when she saw the colour of his eyes. They had a faint red tinge to them that just plain fascinated her. When she noticed the flame, her eyes widened a little before she caught herself and simply clutched Mary's arm tighter. The word going through her head was 'witch', but she knew better then to start irrationally screaming it like the nuns at the church. Carina covered her mouth with her hand, just in case she might say something offensive. She could feel a difference in the man's power, which faded as the flame disappeared. Carina still felt shocked as he slid a book over towards them, simply nodding as he stated that it was a diary of someone similar to them both...Carina instantly assumed necromancy being the topic. “Thank you.” She felt a change in the man's power again, and this time it felt more...alive. Confused, and disliking the difference, she pulled away from him metaphysically. A frown crossed her features. “How?...” She wondered out loud, before shaking her head and smiling politely at the man. “You never introduced yourself. I am Ashleigh, and this is Rose.” Carina said, not quite wanting to give the man their real names, especially considering that the church might have been on the lookout for them. She used their second names instead, being the names that first came to mind. “We just moved to Paris.” She said casually, though her grip on Mary's arm had not loosened since the man had conjured fire from seemingly no where. Carina was fully aware that they may just be sitting with an extremely dangerous man, and she did not want to be on his bad side...she did not want to see any demons. |

Mary’s eye cut across to Carina when she spoke the word like she’d never heard of them before. Was it possible her sister really had no idea of the potential danger they could be in? Mary had already heard about the status of necromancers was as far as vampires were concerned. She’d just hoped that they could have left the city before one of them discovered what the two girls were. It was why she remained alert and decided to keep her aura stretched out over the one who was sitting with them. If he tried something then she wouldn’t hesitate. For now, he seemed more intrigued by them than anything. The fact that he knew methods of demon summoning and other things disturbed her a little, but then when he spoke of why he doubted he could raise the dead, she snorted, “Of course you could not do it. You may have a... soul... or whatever it is now. But you aredead during the day when you ‘sleep’ – completely – nothing but an empty husk. It defies logic if one can raise and manipulate one’s own dead body.” She refused to let the inner confusion of having access to that knowledge and yet not remembering where it was learned. She assumed at the ‘school’, but it bothered her. In a flash though, Mary had to restrain herself from crushing her power down on the vampire as she watched his eyes change colour and Carina clung on to her arm tightly while he showed them a trick. Mary’s eyes narrowed, but she showed no other expression as she warred with herself as to how or why a vampire was manipulating fire. A darker thought ran through her mid for a moment as well as she pondered over whether he would combust if she blew it toward his skin. For a moment she was tempted. A moment later, it was gone as he snapped his hand shut and the red faded from his eyes, before he chase a book out of his pile and passed it across to them. Mary dared to lean forward and pull it across the rest of the way with her free arm before opening to about halfway and flicking through some of the pages. A diary of someone like them... perhaps that would assist Carina a little more in her learning. Attention was snatched away from her study of the journal however, when she felt something change in the vampire’s aura, and her head snapped up with just a hint of surprise at the familiarity of the new warmth in it. It carried a hint of something she’d felt before – and recently too – and she could only wonder how on earth he managed to carry that kind of life around him. “Why can I feel jaguar in your aura?” The question slipped before she could think of it, and the memory of only a couple of nights ago returned to her. She couldn’t forget that energy signature if she wanted to – not after what had occurred, and briefly she hoped that the Nochil had made it back to his apartments safely. Though remembering it all made her want to rub the back of her head which she’d realised had been healed by him, she restrained herself and retained her composure as an eyebrow raised at him. She remained silent as Carina introduced them, silently glad her sister was using fake names since the last thing they needed was someone who knew magic to know their real ones. Names carried power. The woman was beginning to grow tired of being polite though. Unlike her sister, she wasn’t afraid of him – if anything his presence only set her on edge and tugged at that part of her that usually made her black out and not realise what she was doing until it was already done. It was only the contact with Carina that currently suppressed her anxiety from growing too much, and the fact that he hadn’t acted out offensively toward them yet. Still... was there a point to his coming to sit with them in the first place? “So have we entertained you enough or was there something you wanted from us?” Mary’s voice held an edge to it, as though wanting him to push her just that little bit further and give him a reason why vampires feared necromancers. Her own dark eyes seemed to grow darker again, before she decided she didn’t want to sit there having idle conversation with something she wanted to kill, “I think it is time for us to go Ashleigh.” The young woman’s hands moved fast to conceal the diary as she pocketed it inside her jacket, it wasn't like they could afford it after all, but it was necessary. Her eyes narrowed at the vampire as though to study whether he would point it out to anyone else, before she moved to stand while still holding her sister’s arm tightly. “You know we should not stay in one place for too long.” |

It wasn’t until he felt part of the scrutiny go away that he released what he was holding of Magda’s aura. His own aura returned to normal once more, and the vampire smiled faintly when asked how it was he felt alive. The smile froze though as he regarded ‘Rose’ and how she was quickly able to pick up the feel of his jaguar servant. These young ladies were much more dangerous than he had first assumed, and yet they were also much more intriguing than he would have thought. He knew the kill on sight policy that the vampire council enforced in regards to necromancers, but he wasn’t exactly on anyone’s side in anything. He liked to keep to his own side. He also couldn’t just let them walk out of here. If the vampire working the shop did not come after them, then surely he would probably at least alert the council to the matter. That could cause trouble that Nathan did not want at this particular moment. He knew a confrontation of some sort with the council would happen, but it would be on his terms, not theirs. He nodded slightly, pulling himself from his thoughts. “You’re right, how rude of me not to introduce myself to you first thing when I came over. My apologies Ashleigh; my name is Nathan.” He inclined his head slightly towards her, then looked over towards Rose as she first asked if he had a reason for approaching them, then stated they should go. Instantly he was on his feet, no real movement seemingly involved, just one moment he was sitting in the chair, the next he was on his feet beside it, just watching them. “I did actually have a reason for approaching the both of you.” His head lowered and tilted slightly to one side, his eyes turning to look at the vampire by the entrance for a brief moment. In that time span, his eyes bled once more to the crimson, a cool ‘wind’ tinged with the essence of magic ‘blowing’ out to surround the trio. The barrier as it were was just a simple proximity ward to block any sound from escaping the area it contained. It wouldn’t do to have the vampire listening in. Turning back to look at the young women, Nathan’s face turned serious as he spoke. “I can only assume you both know exactly what it is you are doing. Even so, you risk so much just coming out into the streets at night, more-so here in Paris than anywhere else in the world except for one other place. Suicidal? Looking for trouble? Both, maybe something else? I don’t know. I can’t reason out why two necromancers would be in a vampire run store. All I can assure is that he,” Nathan nudged his head back towards the vampire by the door, “...will try to either a, kill you himself, or b, call one of the bigger ‘powers that be’ to take care of the two of you.” Nathan muttered under his breath then, not sure what he could do to convince them to come with him. They wouldn’t believe his word, and he wouldn’t force them to come with him either. He didn’t want to kill them, true necromancers, not just animators, were far too rare to casually dispose of. Nathan would much rather have the two of them come back with him. “Look, you don’t have to believe me on anything I’ve said. I’ve really not given you any reason to trust me, but I’d like to extend an invitation to join me. I can offer sanctuary without any strings attached.” He really didn’t know what else he could do at this point, so he’d leave it to them to take him on his offer, or they could just walk out now to whatever fate might await them. |

Carina nodded as Mary suggested that they leave – it seemed like an extremely wise idea considering the circumstances. Carina didn't want to know how her sister could feel 'jaguar' in the vampires aura – she was positive now that Mary had experienced far more about the supernatural that she had. It was a worrying thought. Not because Mary had more knowledge about the supernatural and their powers, but because it almost certainly meant that something bad had happened to her whilst she was in the churches care. It had always been a suspicion...but Carina had wanted to believe that their church had not been that unethical that they had become 'evil'. “Nathan.” Carina said, committing the face and the name to memory. She blinked – and in that instant Nathan had gone from standing to sitting. She bit her lip – if she gripped Mary's arm any tighter she was sure that it would completely cut off her sister's blood circulation. His eyes once again changed colour, and Carina wondered what exactly he was doing. She sat still faced as he stated that he had a reason for approaching the two of them, instantly assuming it had to do with the book or the demon raising. The next words Nathan spoke slightly scared her – only because she knew that she did not know what she was doing, and she knew her powers were currently uncontrolled. However she had no idea what Nathan was talking about when he hinted that there was much danger in Paris. He asked if they were suicidal or looking for trouble...and Carina had to wonder if the man before them knew far more than he was actually revealing, and was actually with the church, or knew about their previous situation... Carina shook her head with a sigh – surely she was being paranoid? However Nathan seemed fairly certain that the vampire at the door would either try to kill them both, or call a bigger power... What sort of power, Carina didn't want to know. However she certainly didn't want to go with Nathan anywhere either. Whats more, who was to say that the man at the door even knew anything? Carina sighed, looking at the man at the door, slightly unsure of what to do next. It was when he smiled rather coldly back at her that she realized that perhaps Nathan might be telling the truth. He had offered a sanctuary of sorts, though she wasn't entirely sure how much of a sanctuary it would be. Truth be told, she was exhausted and starving, not to mention her sister. Carina knew that whatever decision she made would have a heavy influence on their next actions. However there was a third option to be considered. If they did decide to go with Nathan, and he choose to try and kill them...who was to say that they simply couldn't kill him? Carina knew that she could raise an army if she wanted, especially if Mary was there with her. It was with this thought that she finally nodded slightly. “We will come with you.” Carina said, loosening her grip on Mary slightly, before giving her a reassuring smile – Carina hoped that Mary would get that she had a plan. “I cannot guarantee that we will stay for long...but given the circumstances it seems that we have no other choice.” It was with that, that Carina stood up, her thoughts (and thus, her powers) focused on Mary. “I can drive there, if you give me the address.” The thought of the number plate on the vehicle giving away personal details did not even cross her mind. “Most of our belongings are in the car.” Their belongings consisted of mainly stolen junk-food bars, soda, stolen towels, a collection of Christian music CDs and some clothes, but they were still important to her, for some absurd reason. |

(ooc: crap post, sorry! >.<) Already the tension was building inside Mary; she didn’t like this situation one bit and not just wanted to get herself and Carina out of there. She was well aware of the other vampire in the store, watching them but a cold part of her knew that if it made a wrong move, she wouldn’t hesitate to do whatever had to be done. AS they began to stand though, Nathan moved in not even a flash. Simply shifting from sitting to standing without barely a hint that he’d moved. Mary tensed further like a snake coiling up preparing to strike as soon as she felt her sister’s grip on her tighten, and her eyes narrowed in warning to the vampire. He really, really didn’t want to push her... she could already feel herself slipping slightly. The red hue returned to his eyes and Mary could sense something going on around them, but she wasn’t entirely sure what. As he began to speak though, she picked up on Carina’s rising fear which only added to Mary’s tension. What reason did they have to trust him? Of course she realised that the other vampire watching would try something, but she could take care of him easily. “Why should it bother you what we do, aside from being seen talking to us. Of course...” Her eyebrow rose slightly, “I doubt your other ‘friend’ over there would last long enough to tell.” “... It wouldn’t take much...” Mary murmured softly as she peered toward the apparent obstruction between the twins and freedom. There was almost a coldness to her voice as she slowly began to switch off a little. She barely heard the invitation to stay with Nathan and it was only when Carina’s voice cut in and her grip on Mary’s arm loosened slightly that the other young woman blinked and returned to herself to glance at her sister as though she were mad. Even with the reassuring smile from her sister, Mary felt terribly uneasy with this decision, however she had been the one who’d been locked away for five years and Carina surely wouldn’t break her out and then lead them purposely into danger. She had to have a plan. The only one Mary could think of at the moment was that if this Nathan tried anything funny, then he would regret it. It was clear she wasn’t happy with the decision. Still, her gaze travelled back to the vampire who’d been watching them. “He will still need to be taken care of.” The sentence was spoken cold and matter-of-factly. Just because they left with a vampire, didn’t mean he wouldn’t still attempt to stop them or contact a higher authority. It wouldn’t be difficult to just make him disappear – but that would bring attention to them if there was anyone else around. Mary was in whole agreement that they take their own car though – it meant a level of freedom in case things didn’t turn out so well for them, and if Nathan really wanted them to go with him then he would allow it. There was also the fact that the idea of travelling within a closed space with him set her on edge. It was a deep-rooted instinct for the woman – that vampires couldn’t be trusted and should be eliminated before they could attack. The fact that her sister was being exposed to them only made that feeling stronger. |

He watched their reactions carefully, noting each shift of emotion within them. Carina’s fear turning to some sort of acceptance as to their situation as it was. Mary however, he could feel was the more dangerous of the two, something not seeming quite right with her. They both posed their own separate dangers to him however. Carina, her powers less refined, more wild…and Mary who seemed like at any moment she’d be ready to kill him. He suddenly smirked at the two girls. They could try if they wanted. The barrier faded then, noise being allowed to escape once more past the area he had sectioned off. “That seems reasonable enough. I want to drive however. And I assume you can handle the rest of your business here.” That business being the vampire by the door. Picking up the books he wished to purchase, he walked easily towards that same vampire, a small stack of money being passed as Nathan walked past him. Before he hit the door, he seemed to melt away into mist and nothingness. In truth he had simply vanished from that spot, appearing then outside, his image a shadow, an afterimage of where he had been. A quick glance around, and he thought he knew their car. In an instant he was leaning against it, books sitting on the roof. |

Mary did not seem happy with the decision that she had made but she doubted that either of them would object to somewhere other than their car to sleep...at the very least, Carina wouldn't object. She was exhausted...and if the vampire could provide food then that was even better. So long as nothing went wrong, Carina couldn't see what the look Mary gave her was for - it wasn't like they were defenseless. She simply sighed and nodded at Mary's suggestion that the 'vampire' would have to be taken care of. It wasn't as though she hadn't killed before...but she didn't particularly want to do so again, much less make her sister do the deed. In fact, Carina didn't want to go anywhere near the vampire at all, and was hoping that he hadn't noticed them in the library, even though she already knew he had. Her attention snapped back to Nathan as he stated that he wanted to drive. The only people she trusted both her and Mary's lives in, was her sister and herself. She shook her head diligently in protest, though he had already gotton up and left for the door. He seemed to almost...disappear from the door frame, which caused Carina to cover her mouth with her hands. "He's a witch...that much is certain." Carina stated, her thoughts now on whether her father had kept cigarette lighters in the car - just in case something went wrong. It was without a second thought that she stood up, fidgeting as the vampire at the register stared at them with a devious smirk on his face that Carina didn't like one little bit. "What were you planning to do with him?" Carina whispered to her sister, still wanting to believe that there was nothing wrong, and that Mary was completely innocent in terms of murder. "I don't think we should k..." Carina left her next words unspoken, not wanting to provoke the thought that they could kill him, if they so desired. "Sneak past?" She questioned quietly, not liking the way that the vampire's grin got broader and broader. It almost felt like he could hear exactly what she was saying. Carina looked to Mary once more, before sighing. "I'll give it a go...if it's safe I'll gesture to you, alright?" The last thing Carina wanted to do was put Mary in any form of danger. Focusing on the vampire, Carina metaphysically 'thrust' her power in his general direction, an action which pushed him backwards physically as well as making his pupils dilate. It was then that Carina nodded at Mary, before running out the door, expecting her sister to follow. Carina didn't even look behind her to check - rather she saw Nathan leaning against her father's car, and felt a small pang of both annoyance and anger flare up. Had he known from the start? Was this some sort of sick joke? More importantly, was he from the church? Carina walked calmly up to him, a deathly look on her face. "I don't know if you mean well or not...but if you hurt either of us..." She said, pointing accusingly at him. "Where are you taking us to? At the very least, give me the address." Carina didn't trust him to do that either. She knew most of the locations of churches around Paris, and she was doing her damned best job to avoid them all. Carina sighed. "Sorry...but our circumstances are not great at this moment in time." She shook her head, before looking up to see Mary heading towards them both. Edited by Carina Magdeline, Feb 16 2009, 03:10 AM.

Whether she liked it or not, it seemed the decision had been made and Mary could only go along with it and make sure that nothing happened to Carina. In the back of her mind she knew that she’d kill anyone who posed any kind of threat to her sister, and while the thought normally concerned her, right now it was something that served to make her feel a little calmer in a cold kind of way. The vampire named Nathan mentioned they should finish their ‘business’ and then departed, Mary’s eyes narrowing as he seemed to simply vanish from sight before the door. At the question of what she was going to do with the vampire who had been watching them, Mary’s gaze slid across to the creature whose feature twisted into a malicious smirk. The suggestion to sneak past would be fruitless, Mary knew. If they tried to run he’d either stop them right away, or else he’d be instantly calling someone else in to take care of them before they could get far from the shop. She didn’t want to take that chance. Of course, she wasn’t going to stop Carina from going – it gave her the best opportunity to distract the thing and take care of it without having to get her sister involved at all. Mary didn’t particularly want Carina to know what she believed she was capable of just yet, she also wasn’t willing to give in to that building tension that threatened to snap while her sister was watching either. Mary glanced at Carina for a moment though as her sister used her power to push the vampire, impressed that she knew how to wield it like that despite the seeming little knowledge she had – but she didn’t follow her as the other girl ran out. Instead, Mary bolted straight toward the counter where the creature was, spotting a letter opener which she used to slice the meat of her palm open before reaching the undead thing which was still recovering from the surprise ‘attack’ from Carina. Without a moment’s hesitation, Mary jammed her hand into its mouth, and winced painfully after a moment after its shock had passed and instinct to feed kicked in. That was when she released the barriers on her power completely and surrounded the pitiful thing with her aura. With a small incantation that she didn’t remember learning, she knew that she would roll the vampire, binding it to do her will – and she did so. Pulling her hand back, she pulled a handkerchief from her pocket and wrapped it over the wound while giving the vampire instructions that it wouldn’t remember that she or Carina had ever been there at all before pulling back on her power once more and walking out of the store. Shielding her aura once again, Mary stepped out and was making her way toward the car as Carina threatened then apologised to Nathan, though as far as she was concerned, he didn’t need an apology, “Our circumstances that led us here are also private.” Mary spoke coldly, hoping Carina might get the hint not to divulge too much since they couldn’t trust anyone but each other right now. “I don’t think I need to explain that it would be in your best interest not to attempt to deceive us...” She had no doubt he’d have felt what had gone on inside. Much like a vampire’s call to a lycanthrope was difficult to resist, so too was that of a necromancer to a vampire... and Mary knew that. |

He glanced up as the first of the two girls left the shop. His eyes met hers, ignoring the deathly look on her face, and grinned a little at her. She hadn’t looked away. Self confidence seemed to be her current forte, and the vampire found this quite amusing. Or did until she started to lecture him. The grin left to be replaced with an emotionless mask that would have looked warmer on a statue than it did the vampire before her. As if she alone could stop him if he chose to hurt her? She could certainly hurt him, true…but could she do it fast enough to prevent herself from being squished by her own car? The distance between them was so infinitesimally small after all…. His thoughts were broken as his eyes shifted away from the girl in front of him and towards the book shop. Even from here he could feel the change in the atmosphere as if charged up with some invisible power that, if he were being honest with himself, sent a tiny chill down his spine. He mentally shrugged it off though as the power seemed to vanish as quickly as it had come, replaced instead by the figure of the other girl emerging from the shop. The faint metallic smell that came from that direction was all too familiar to the vampire, his eyes narrowing slightly as he analyzed the situation. Very rarely did he feel even the least bit threatened, but this was pushing that threshold. He turned to look back towards Carina as she asked for the address. “If that is information you must know, then we are at a bit of an impasse. That information must remain mine alone for the time being, for my own safety.” He cut off though as Mary approached the pair, his gaze taking them both in. “Circumstances I find, usually are.” His voice was dry, his eyes still narrowed at Mary. “I’m not the one deceiving here, ‘Rose’. Everything I have said has been truth, unlike you two. Lying to either of you would be of no benefit to any of us. And your threats on my well being are misguided. True, you might be able to kill me, but in the time it takes for you to kill me, I can just as easily kill the both of you. Then we’d all be dead, and I’d rather not squander over a millennia of life just because you decided you didn’t like me.” Edited by Nathan Baxton, Feb 19 2009, 09:29 AM.

If Carina had been a bit more experience, and a little less naive, she would have felt th change in the air, the feeling of power being used. However the only indication she had that something had happened and possibly gone wrong was that Mary now had a blood-stained handkerchief wrapped around her hand. The question what Mary had done plagued her mind yet she still knew better than to ask. She nodded at her sisters words, already knowing that telling the creature before them anything might wind up dangerous to all three of them. THe cold tone to Mary's voice was one that made even Carina look twice at her sister. It was almost as though...almost as though Mary knew something more. At that moment, Carina was not sure who was the bigger threat - Nate or Mary. A cold shiver ran down her spine at the thought of Mary doing what she had done. "So I am supposed to simply let you drive us to...well...potentially our own eaths?" Carina asked, not holding back the frustration in her voice. She ignored the remark about lying - he was bluffing. However there was something about his tone of voice when he spoke of killing them that made Carina believe him. She did not want to die so soon, even though she was annoyed. She crossed her arms before sighing. "Do not underestimate us." She finished lamely, opening a car door and taking the seat next to the drivers one. She pulled out a map with the intention to follow exactly where he took them. "Mary, get in the back seat?" Carina asked, turning around and patting the seat behind where Nate would be sitting. Surely the message would not be lost on either of them. As Nate switched the car on, soft christian gospel music started playing through the speakers. |

“You approached us, ‘Nathan’,” Mary didn’t believe that was his true name either, so in the end it seemed they were all going to play a game of deception in order to protect themselves. So be it. Even as Carina posed the question of whether they could be lead to their possible demise without a clue of the address, Mary’s resolve was unwavering in the wake of what had transpired in the shop before she’d exited. She was going to find it difficult to relax in the company of this vampire, but she was going to trust her sister’s decision, and if anything happened, she knew how to take care of things easily enough. Passing the vampire as she made her way around to the door behind the driver’s side, Mary spoke quietly, “And I never said anything about killing you...” There were far worse things than death, and he would be well aware of that, she was certain. The necromancer didn’t like having to squash down the silent urge to let go and allow the dark instinct that rested inside her to take over in order to protect herself and her sister. A part of her knew that she may have been scaring her sister as well, and she didn’t like it. The last thing she wanted to do was alienate the only person she had left – and the person who’d actually pulled her from the hell that was the school where she’d been kept. Taking her seat in the back, Mary would watch the vampire carefully, as well as take note of the directions where they were going and landmarks she could use to place herself. She didn’t like not knowing where they were going, but really had no choice left in the matter now. All she could do was keep and eye on the vampire who’d taken enough interest in them to offer them a place to stay. Oh yeah, that wasn’t suspicious at all. |
