The past week – had it really been a week? – had been a haze of constant watching and anxiety for Mary, who hadn’t left the Institution since she’d been taken there five years ago. It was strange being in the outside world again; having some semblance of freedom. She continuously expected it to be simply taken away from her. Though, while it bothered Carina to do things like break into machines to get food, to Mary it was simply instinct. To live, one had to eat – by whatever means necessary. You did what you had to in order to survive. Though, Mary hadn’t exactly been living to that rule as much – she found difficulty in sleeping at any time, feeling like she had to stay alert in case something happened or they came looking for her. Her appetite had also been lacking, but she ate on occasions so that Carina didn’t begin worrying about her too much. The idle chatter they’d had since being reunited had been refreshing for Mary, and she couldn’t get enough of it to be honest. She never thought to ask of their parents, simply accepting that wherever they were, they weren’t with the girls and wouldn’t be sending her away again. She also wanted to avoid the discussion of the ‘home’ she’d been living in, though it was mostly because despite knowing it wasn’t the most savoury of places, she didn’t remember much at all. Only the knowledge that filled her brain on various things to do with hers and Carina’s abilities. She wasn’t entirely certain on exactly when or where she’d learned it all – it was simply there. And for some reason it came as a surprise to learn that Carina still didn’t know much about necromancy or the dead. A deep part of Mary knew it was dangerous for her sister to continue on without knowing what she was capable of. She was a danger to herself and to others; and so the discussion on the subject led them to find a bookstore slash library (run by vampires, to Mary’s dismay), and find information on it since she didn’t think she could teach everything to Cari by herself. “Hmm?” Mary’s attention was taken from her task of keeping an eye out on their surrounds while Carina took notes as her sister spoke to her, “Which part?” She wasn’t paying much focus on Carina to be honest, much more concerned with the fact that they were in an area that reeked of vampire energy, in a bookstore where they were being watched by one of the undead things, while they read books on necromancy of all things. Something about the whole thing set off warning bells in her head – they stood out like a sore thumb. She wanted to raise her own power over the dead slightly to ward them away from the girls, but it could possibly backfire. “I know a lot of things Cari,” Mary tore her eyes from the vampire watching them and glanced at the line about psychics and snorted, “Psychics cannot raise the dead, but they can channel a soul or spirit...” Again, she didn’t know how she knew that; it was just... there. She leaned her head against her sister’s shoulder, glancing at the muesli bar that was offered before picking it up and taking a half-hearted bite while reading more of the page – though remained alert of any movement around them.
