The Dauphin As one rounds the thoroughfare from the east, one of the many of the hotel restaurants comes into view. The grand atmosphere provides the elite of a Chicago a fine vantage point for viewing the latest scandals and antics among their peers, yet the booths on the north wall can serve as a hiding place for the more private socialites. The decor is French Baroque and the place is not made for intimate dining. The menu features a combination of French Continental cuisine and the popular steak and seafood dishes that appeal to the discriminating palate. The Cigar Room The east wall has a large opening leading to a more subdued atmosphere that may be closed off to the rest of the commotion of the lobby by mahogany sliding doors. Here the decor is of a plush study with small tables and padded chairs of plush burgundy leather. Brass lamps with deep green ceramic shades in a secretarial style sit atop ornately carvedmahogany tables. The principle focus of the room is a large granite hearth which often house a small smoldering flame and is crowned by a large painting of Sir Francis Drake framed in traditional English mahogany. Around it is a large sofa and armchairs with an accompanying coffee table and smaller tables to the sides of the furnishings. All are of matching material to the other furnishings in the room. The lighting is dim in this room and it serves to promote the feeling of a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city streets which are visible through large arched windows on the exterior walls. The walls are calming as they are decorated with dark wood paneling with dim wall sconces made of brass. In the corners of the room are sets of armchairs which surround small tables and in the south corner the table is a marble chess board with matching pieces with built in bookcases serving as a backdrop to the dignified and quiet atmosphere. Services provided in the smoking room are many. One may request the finest cigars, refreshments, concierge services, food, and other privileges reserved for "valued" guests. The staff does its utmost to provide an atmosphere of a retreat and rarely disappoints. The Grand Ballroom The Grand Ballroom rises from the main floor to the second level. It is a versatile elegant space. Its features are determined by the event at hand. For banquets, tables are set and a stage erected for keynote speakers. For a gala event, an orchestra may be set on the second level overlooking the festivities to maximize space and seating left to a minimal amount. The Balcony on the second level rounds the circumference of the room and large French doors open to an outdoor patio overlooking Michigan Avenue and the lights of the city. Conference Rooms Conference rooms on both the first and the second levels resemble libraries when not in use. Book cases and armchairs occupy these spaces normally, making the ambiance similar to that of the Cigar Room. Hotel staff set up the spaces based on patrons needs. The concierge is most typically the man to see when looking to make reservations. Second Floor The second floor features more conference rooms, a great foyer whose main area is located on the west half of the building and the entrance to the balcony of the Grand Ballroom, an overlook of the lobby, and a more intimate restaurant named Madrelena's which features Italian cuisine. The Plaza Across the street from the hotel on East Walton Place, is a small cobblestone plaza. It features a few trees and hedges offer shelter from the traffic of the busy street. Lovers often hide from prying eyes as the shadows protect them from the dim gas lights dotting the plaza.. There are park benches around a small fountain at its center. The plaza is accessed easily from all sides as the landscape is limited and hedges run the backs of the benches. |
