What is your wand wood on Pottermore? (Or what do you think you will get) When you are on Pottermore, you get a wand. I was surprised by my wand's choice. I had always believed Oak would be mine based on the Celtic Calendar. But as I took the quiz to determine my wand wood, I was surprised by the answer I received. So I want to share with you all the research I did on my Pottermore Wand Wood. I trust J.K. Rowling on this and I think the research on the wood was actually incredible insightful. So share your thoughts! What wood did you get? What do you think about it? Did you research it? If not, do so and share! Does it describe you perfectly? Does it not? My Wand Wood: Alder Celtic Calendar: It is associated with fourth moon of the Celtic Year (March 18 - April 14). While that time is not associated with my date of birth, I have to say, the Alder wood is incredibly fascinating. Latin Name: Alnus Serrulata. Celtic name: Fearn (pronounced fair un). Folk and Common Names: Alder, Gummy/Gluey (European), Roguse/wrinkly (Tag), Tree of the Fairies. Family and Uses: It is a part of the hazelnut family and was used by Native Americans as a type of medicinal plant. Tea can be made from the bark as well. Birds Associated With Wood: Raven, Crow, and Gull. Colors Associated with Wood: Crimson, Green-Brown, and Royal Purple. Day Associated with Wood: Saturday Gemstone Associated with Wood: Fire-garnet (also known as Pyrope). Element Associated with Wood: Fire Planet Associated with Wood: Venus Sacred To: It is sacred to Bran the Blessed and Cronos. It is also sacred to Faerry kings and elf kings - from the word Alder comes elder (not the tree) as in 'elder' kings. The Fey of the Alder: The Fey have been described as water spirits or as "dark faeries". The faeries are known to take the shape of ravens. Tree Folk-Lore: In tree folk-lore, it is known as the tree of fire. And in the battle of the trees - the Alder tree fought in the front line. It was described as the "battle witch" of all the woods, and the tree that was hottest in the fight. Magical Uses: It's magical uses are impeccable. It is a time designated to celebrate the connection and tie between all women, and the mother-daughter bond. The Alder has applications done for spiritual decisions, duty, prophecy, oracular strength, intelligence, mental prowess, Resurrection, air magic, water magic, strength, spirituality, teaching, weather magic, and protection. Some say carrying Alder twigs or flowers act as a charm for communicating with the fey. Some say if you make a whistle out of Alder wood, young witches will be able to entice Air elemental spirits. It gives the Witch the ability to summon, control, and banish elementals or the four winds. It is the perfect wood to make magical pipes and flutes for ceremonies. The Alder wood produces red dye from the bark, green dye from the flowers, and brown dye from the twigs. It is said some witches use these dyes to signify fire, water, and earth. My Thoughts: I'm pleasantly surprised by my wand choice. If it is true - the wand chooses the witch - then I like that my wood associated with the fairies and intense magic. And while the eagle is the emblem of the Ravenclaw house, it is fitting (I think) that the bird of the Alder is a Raven and I am in the Ravenclaw house.
