That crazy cat lady . . . man

That was the Rosaline he remembered . . . that perfectly controlled form with its subtle grace, hiding a frightening power just below the surface; a turbulent maelstrom beneath the calm sands. Soon though, Vinar and Nex parted: the former to dispose of his old guise, undoubtedly hiding his own designs; the latter off to maintain his own shady vigil. It did certainly ring true of the old days in the cathedral expanse of their old home.

"Well then," Liber said, "If I can trust the two of you to stay out of trouble, I too shall take my leave. It seems that the better part of our company is not incredibly invested in food or drink as we cross the deep desert. I am not sure they quite realise its deadly force." He finished with a small laugh as he turned to head down the street. The farm was just a few minutes' walk towards the eastern walls. Once he'd bargained a reasonable price for a couple weeks' worth rationed food, he set off to the smithy to inspect their wares, time yet to spare. Leaving with a simple Opinel, Liber turned to the southern gates as the sun grew lower in the western sky.

((That never occurred to me! xD And no problem Admiral! :D ))

Vinar made his way to the farm and ignored the whole idea of bargaining. He pulled a few popping stones, an invention he had found in his travels, and threw a few into the distant farms. While the farmers were distracted, he stole what he believed to be a sufficient amount of food. He then jumped on a nearby roof by their meeting place. One thing he had learned: never be the first or second to a meeting.

Tears to Roses

Lucy's skills hadn't slipped in their time apart, she sucked to begin with and if anything she still sucked- maybe a little less, not by much. She gathered up herself and left the house on her own time, making her way back towards the town to take what she needed. First stop, a small potion shop. It was nothing special, and she didn't pick up anything amazing either. Just a small vial of black liquid, meant to knock someone out cold. She dripped a bit into the small compartment on her ring as she left the shop and stuck the remains potion into her pocket.

From there she began to make her way towards multiple other shops, a clothing shop where she picked up a traveler's cloak (what's an epic saga without one?), a satchel of food, and a few new throwing knieves which she slipped into his cloak pocket. She headed towards the gates from there, spotting Liber as she came foreword. She lifted a hand to wave before coming to a halt beside him.

Rosaline was next to arrive at the meeting spot, after leaving her home behind. She had written the letter, set it on the table, and took what she needed, making sure to say goodbye to her home of a few years.
Most of the villagers didn't recognize her as she passed by, especially since she didn't go out much - the ones that came into the tavern usually came out too drunk to remember their night, or morning, if they were that type. Even so, she received a few stares and strange looks, as if she was a foreigner, even though her skin was tan with the warmth of the sun and her cheeks rosy from the same.

When she arrived, she spotted Liber and Lucy, offering them a small wave. She turned her gaze toward a distant roof, spotting a figure on it and smiling inwardly. She made no motion towards Vinar, hiding her thoughts and emotions from the others. "Looks like he's already remembering the old days, jumping on rooftops and whatnot. Ah, nostalgia." Her lips curled up subconsciously into a smile in his direction, she couldn't help but appreciate Vinar for his cheerful personality, flashy attire, and courageous wit; at least, that was what she gathered from it. At least she wouldn't be the only one showing off, right?

She turned her blue eyes back to Liber and Lucy, glancing about. "So, who are we missing?" She spoke, wondering if the two had noticed Vinar yet, or if she had been the only one.

"Ignoring the masked crusader prancing about the rooftops," Liber noted the shadows atop a nearby roof, "only our companion, Mandora." Turbulence is life force. It is opportunity. He who ceases to change creates order, and that invites destruction. Vinar truly has changed precious little in these years and that is dangerous. Ah, but I fret, do I not? He recalled an old litany from his childhood. "Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Throughout life, one does not miss any chance to hold onto the things that are really precious. Keep in the sunlight."

"I haven't seen any sign of him since he left from your house. I can't say that I remember him well enough to know his habits, so I couldn't say if he might be in trouble or if this is normal for him. But," he glanced at the sun, setting to the west, "should we wait? It's a straight path south for a few miles--there's little chance of him missing us. . . ." His voice trailed off, looked between the two women. Vinar was still off hiding above their group, doubtlessly listening to every word, waiting to shadow himself behind their trail as they set off.

Nex's search had been complete to say the least, but it was not without its own rewards. He had found out that this little town was to be the home of an Imperial(I think?) battalion sometime within the next 48 hours, their advanced horsemen should be arriving within the hour. With this news in mind he had gone directly to the meeting site, already late as the sun was beginning to set.

The first to notice him would undoubtedly be Vinar, as Nex approached the man crouching on the rooftops from behind. He moved with the silent grace of a panther, feet gliding over shingles as he stole up behind Vinar. Leaning over his shoulder he looked down at the group before speaking. “Why are we sneaking around up here?” Without waiting for a fist to be swung he pulled back and moved around him. Now in plain view of anyone on the street Nex marched down the sloped roof and dropped neatly to the ground, not waiting to see what the formerly hidden Vinar would do.

"The formerly hidden Vinar" jumped down and joined them. "Now I remember why I don't hang out with ex-coworkers. There's no way to surprise them! But come on, you could have at least pretended to not notice me..." He grinned anyway and asked, "Are we ready then?"

There'll be no sneaking up on them, then. Anything will have to be done blatantly but away from the others. Of course there's always the drastic measures, but I suppose I should save those for plan "B." At the moment, I suppose the best plan would be wait and watch. Who knows? Perhaps the Baron will complete my quest for me. They know it not, but they are the last of the Scian.

"The last five" are out for revenge. How soon before the last four? And three? How soon before I can rest safely?

Perhaps I need not do anything, per se. One's best allies can be one's worst enemies. A few lies here, some manipulation there... But I suppose we'll see what transpires soon enough.

Rosaline watched Vinar cautiously, almost as if waiting for something. She shifted her gaze from him to Liber, and nodding once. "Well, I do believe we're all here. I suppose we should head out, and commence our journey..." Her words trailed off, as if she had gotten distracted. She glanced away from the group, hiding the gritty, unnerved feeling behind a generous smile. Rosaline couldn't help but feel that something was wrong. Even before the Fall had happened, something had told her it would. She didn't know what, or when, even, but something bad was going to happen.

She turned her gaze back to them, tracing her fingers down her arm slowly and steadily. On the outside, she simply seemed eager and friendly; on the inside, she was churning with suspicion. She turned once more to Vinar, directing her attention to him. "So, I hope you don't mind me asking, but I'm curious...where did you come up with your flashy garb?" She asked; it was an honest question, with no suspicion or malice behind it, simply curiosity. Something about him intrigued her, sparked her interest - perhaps it was the fact that she couldn't quite recognize him, and therefore, he seemed so foreign to her, mysterious.

She had started to remember the others quite well, even so that she had begun to remember their personalities as well. She was glad, really, to finally remember - yet, why couldn't she find anything behind Vinar's presence, apparel, or personality? Something was lacking, and she wanted to know what. She pouted inwardly, almost as if feeling sorry for herself for her next thought: She had always been a sucker for mysterious men.

Then again, weren't those the most dangerous? She pondered on that while she waited for his answer, her round, sapphire-colored orbs locked on him with slight intensity. She thought about her definition of mysterious, and realized that perhaps she should redefine it - all of these people were mysterious in one way or another, especially after all this time.
She sighed. There was no way of making up her confused mind.

[ please skip Lucy for a while, at least while you guys are talking- she really doesn't know what's going on and my entire post would be her wondering what's going on. ]

"Ohh, right then," Liber yawned deeply. It had been a long and tiring day, full of surprises to say the least. "We'd better get on the road before Second Moon comes up. Its light always seemed . . . evil to me. A bad omen." He turned, passing through the village gates. They would all follow soon enough, he knew. But still, into the desert. Strange things had a way of happening deep into the heart of ancient earth. Even without the extraordinary, there were those of the Quel'Toror, that hidden band, buried in the eons of time.

It was they that Liber most feared, their old ways. It was true that they were the last remnants of an ancient empire, and thus had a vast array of technologies most couldn't imagine, but that was not what was to be cautioned. No, it was their culture, their old ways. They were not always friendly, very often eager to sacrifice a traveler to the Great Mother Storms, their desert goddess Hathuin. It was a game of risks that they played, but one that could not be avoided.

But what if they were to meet their ends? What good would have come of that? No! That could not be how it was to play out. But still. . . . Liber glanced over his shoulder, comrades fast behind. Already Second Moon was coming over the horizon, its light interspersing with that of First Moon, causing a greenish glow to settle over the land. "Evil," he muttered. That light had always disturbed him; there was nothing natural to it. His senses adjusted to this new climate--eyes alert; nose taking in the slightest of smells, even the faint whispers of his companions' pheromones. Now was not a time to let one's guard drop, not in the presence of this incubus.
