A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

Founded in 2010 by Phantom, Remains of the Republic has its roots in Star Wars Battlefront II (2005) for the PS2, becoming one of its most successful Europe-based clans.

In 2015-2016, we were active on the new Star Wars Battlefront (2015) game. Though just a group of friends playing for fun occasionally, we still managed to win the EU Cup in a tournament.

Every now and then we fire up our old PS2's to play SWBF2 again, all remaining players from the EU joining forces to play in friendly tournaments along with players from the United States, where there's a larger remaining user base.

These days, RoR mainly functions as a homebase where old and new players meet up to stay in touch and play Battlefront as well as other games.

In case there is any doubt, here is the official notice from GameSpy that they are shutting down, and here is the official notice from EA that they are retiring Star Wars Battlefront II after the shutdown.

I know this is a PS2 forum but some people here might want to play some more SWB2 in future, even if its limited to the PC. Here's one method developed by a guy called Kalle. Gamemaster is the most promising looking alternative to playing SWB2 beyond the 31st of May/30th of June. It's an alternative masterserver and will replace practically the entire Gamespy masterserver. It is supported with an ingame browser and dedicated servers. Also it works for both 1.0 and 1.1. From what I understood, you have to simply place the downloaded files into your GameData file.
Further information can be found on swb3.de which is German only though.

yeah it is like openspy but with patched files... I think the only important thing is to make server manager work with it and then make the server hosting company use it too...

still, I wonder how many players would be smart enough to get it

smart? it's more about how many players bother to go through endless hassle for some swb2 action - the answer is only the most dedicated. This means 90% dont care and we're left with no public / only funwars now and then.

Myself, i doubt i'll download anything to continue to play SWB2, i'll move on...

The server manager works with Gamemaster. Also, you can just keep on using the server browser ingame.

And Uffe, it's literally just moving a .exe into the GameData folder. Less work than installing 1.1. But I understand what you mean. I'll most likely stop playing SWB2 after the server shutdown too. In maybe 6 months though..you never know. SWB2 is just one of these games you come back to. Even if it's just once a year.

It just says it will support "dedicated servers" under "not available now" or something

they could mean dedicated servers ingame too (you can host dedicated through create too on PC) but idk

And it IS about being smart enough... most players want to play after its ended... but won't know how... thats the main problem but i guess we'll see and Uffe I expected that with u xD you ragequit fast even when its still active

Apparently there are parallel efforts on both sides of the Atlantic to support SWBFII. Some details are on the SWGO web site. I doubt the US efforts will include the 1.0 version of the game.

Currently you can run dedicated servers for the PC version on OpenSpy, but only when using a patched copy of the retail game. OpenSpy does not work with a similarly patched copy of the free download dedicated server and the Black Bag Operations dedicated server manger will not work with the retail version exe file. I think the technical challenge is who will be the first team to support the free downloaded dedicated server exe with a stable hosting environment.

The race is on.

From my own personal observations, my money is on the Germans. They have a proven history of keeping old games (like Descent 1, 2 & 3) alive where the Americans tend to be easily distracted by new games with lots of eye candy (Oooh, shiny objects...).

This. It seems like the PC 1.0 Community has agreed on using the Gamemaster in the future. From what I've heard, even SWB1 now works on the PC-version.

Yep, the Germans won, first to release a practical solution with GameMaster. The remaining SWBFI community picked it up right away. You can even use GameMaster for the PS2 version.

I was being serious about the shiny objects. Check out the Beta release notice on the SWGO forum.

It has happened. The SWB2 servers are finally shut down. But don't forget that there are still ways to play online( Gamemaster, Gameranger).

Kudos to the developers of Gamemaster/Game-Share. The have succeeded in restoring practical online play for SWBF 1 and SWBF 2 for both PC and PS2 versions. Too bad there are only about 5 players left.
