A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

Founded in 2010 by Phantom, Remains of the Republic has its roots in Star Wars Battlefront II (2005) for the PS2, becoming one of its most successful Europe-based clans.

In 2015-2016, we were active on the new Star Wars Battlefront (2015) game. Though just a group of friends playing for fun occasionally, we still managed to win the EU Cup in a tournament.

Every now and then we fire up our old PS2's to play SWBF2 again, all remaining players from the EU joining forces to play in friendly tournaments along with players from the United States, where there's a larger remaining user base.

These days, RoR mainly functions as a homebase where old and new players meet up to stay in touch and play Battlefront as well as other games.

PS Now, PS4's streaming service for playing PS1, 2 and 3 games, has been announced, here's some information on it.

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2014/01/07/sony-reveals-its-streaming-service-playstation-now

This is the important part for the SWBF2 community though:
Quote:

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation Now will be a subscription-based service -- though whether it will tie-in to existing subscriptions like PlayStation Plus remains to be seen -- and will support online multiplayer and Trophies. Players can also opt not to subscribe and rent games on a by-game basis.

Providing that quote is accurate, that means people who sign up to PS Now will be able to play SWBF2 online.

It raises a lot of questions though, such as how will the servers be hosted? Will EU be able to play vs other continents? Will it use PSN? Could PS2/3 players play vs PS4 players?

Nonetheless, it's still an interesting prospect, and there could be life in the Front yet!

servers will be hosted the same way as on ps2 and no eu wont be able to play other continents, though u might be able to buy NTSC version through it? idk
they would have to remake the whole game to change such stuff so its probably gonna be just emulated like on ps3 because they cant remake it without pandemic

Interesting, where did you read this?

From what I've read this service will eventually be running on smart TVs, tablets, smart phones and similar devices that are not NTSC or PAL dedicated. From the description this will all be cloud based, so I am skeptical about being able to run PC dedicated servers on such a subscription service. I am assuming that any multilayer will be run from $ony servers.

Yes, I am really looking forward to paying for PS2/PS3 games I've already bought, AGAIN. I've already re-purchased several PS2 games that have been ported to the PS3, like the Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter collections from Naughty Dog. If I replace or lose my PS3, I'll have to rent them. I love $ony

Of course the bottom line here is they will probably pull the plug on the SWBFII PS2 game server lobbies at Game Spy to force players to migrate. We will see what summer brings.

Interesting, I look forward to hopefully using it for SWBF2.

no you dont get it, only way they can make it playable on those smarts tvs etc is the emulation (software one) so its same like playing it from ps2 or ps3

it doesnt matter if tablets/smart tvs arent region locked, its still an emulated ps2 game which still has region locks, its like playing online on PCSX2 emulator or ps3 backwards software emulation of ps1 and ps2 games

sony cant host their own servers on gamespy game... ratchet and jak are sony game so they can host there but not swbf2

to remake the game for sony servers would require pandemic which is dead

Im just guessing here but its probably truth

another thing is, you're streaming the game and therefore it requires good internet speed which sucks for people with shitty internet speeds and btw pyro, Sony doesnt own gamespy nor swbf2, they cant shut them down even if they wanted, only lucasarts(or whatever it is now lol) can do it if they stop paying Gamespy for a master server (no master server = no servers show up in session list ingame) which I hear theyve done for swbf1 on pc already (its a matter of time, guessing next year or 2 but idk)

Yeah, this is something I wondered. It seems weird that they'd even bother announcing multiplayer is available if it'll just be a big, laggy mess, but I suppose some areas have ridiculously good internet speeds and it won't be as much of a problem for them. Even just streaming the game offline would be pretty difficult on my terrible net.

No, I don't. There's not enough information for me to draw any concussions. I was making a guess based on the verbiage used in their press releases. Yes they probably will use an emulator, but from the description it sounds like it will be cloud based and accessed using a thin client on the device. It's the "software as a service" business model.

I disagree, it does make a difference if the devices aren't region locked. From a programmers perspective I would not want to support multiple code bases for each region (NTSC, PAL) if I can do the same with one region. But that doesn't mean they won't split us up anyway.

I didn't mean to infer that $ony will shut down the lobbies. It was Lucas Arts that shut down the GameSpy lobbies for SWBF1 PS2 and PC. I assume either Disney or Electronic Arts will make the call to shut down SWBF2 when the time comes.

It's funny, GameSpy doesn't even own the GameSpy lobbies (Powered by GameSpy) anymore. IGN shut down GameSpy and sold off Powered by GameSpy as a separate entity.

yeah it makes a difference but youre talking about something else then, ntsc and pal are video standards, emulator can support both standards just to clear things up

but what I think you said was that the game itself would be rewritten, which is impossible as pandemic doesn't exist

you also said that gamespy (you said "they" so idk) will pull the plug to make players migrate but there will be nothing to migrate to, their version of swbf2 game (if they will make it available) would be the exact same game as on PS2, so it has to use the exact same gamespy master list, unless they remade it which isnt possible without pandemic

I was referring to the maintaining multiple copies and configurations of the (unedited) software and multiple code bases of whatever they use as an emulator.

I'm sure Disney and/or Electronic Arts will receive royalties for the rental fees $ony will charge to play SWBF on PS Now. That is the financial incentive to force people to migrate to the PS Now version.

Michael

You do not have to modify the game to redirect it to a different master list. You can currently do that on the PS2 version by editing the DNS settings and on the PC version and PC dedicated servers by editing the Windows HOSTS file. This is currently being done by SWBF1 players to use the OpenSpy server list for the PC and PS2 game lobbies since all GameSpy lobbies for SWBF1 have been shut down.

I see no reason the same method could not be used with the current (unedited) software running on a cloud based PS2 emulator.

And who would do that? There is no one to do it. Disney holds the rights now but do you really think they care? How hard would it be to simple put the game on the PS STORE like many other ps2 games already there? It would be the easiest and most financially logical thing they could have done but they didn't. I dont know why would EA have anything to do with it. EA is just a game publisher and had no part in making this game if my info is correct anyway.
And even if they somehow magically hypothetically get stuff done. Who would host the servers online? I don't see that happening in milion years. But crossed fingers :)

IF this is true, there might be a chance for me to buy a PS4. I'd love to play once more on SWBF2
