Trailer one. A more recent trailer *warning: may cause your head to asplode* With the inFamous demo coming out not too long from now, it's time for gamers to drag their sweaty butts away from Fallout 3 and MGS4 for the moment to take a long hard look at Sucker Punch's upcoming ass-kicker, inFamous. 'But Angel!', you cry, 'What's inFamous!?' Well step back children, and allow me to enlighten you. The latest feather in the PS3's metaphorical hat, inFamous puts you in the shoes of one Cole McGrath, a bicycle courier working in Empire City. However, things go to hell when a package Cole's carrying explodes, leveling several city blocks and knocking Cole out. When he awakes, two weeks later, he finds out several things: Empire City is under quarantine, the law is dead, the streets are ruled by gangs, a DJ named 'The Voice of Salvation' is telling everyone it's Cole's fault, and he's got himself some nice new electrical powers. Oooh! Shiny! With the city in ruin and only he Ex-girlfriend and jealous best friend to help him, Cole will have to shape the fate of Empire City. Will he use his powers to save everyone? Will he be a realistic hero, saving the city, but not the individual? Or will he be the next Darth Vader, spewing forth lightning at everyone Tom, Dick and Harry? The choice is yours. Gameplay-wise, inFamous will be like GTA IV, with a sandbox environment. However, more importantly, inFamous will feautre a system not unlike the Karma system from Fallout 3. Doing good things, such as saving the lives of innocent survivors, will of course net you good Karma. Doing bad things, like killing the aforementioned survivors, will net you bad Karma. Further choices can be made regarding plot essential choices, like how to handle a situation. IGN described a scene (I shant link you since IGN crashing my Modem, apologies) in which they found themselves in the midst of a large rally of survivors desperate to be let out of quaratine, ready to face off against the military. They described two main choices- take on the military and let the survivors go free, or instigate a riot resulting in the deaths of the civilians. Furthering the Karma system is, Star Wars style, changes in Cole's appearance, even the colour of his lightning (blue=good, red=bad), his reactions to characters talking to him, and general dialogue. And, of course, the game's ending. Further gameplay can be seen in this video (warning, the 'S' word is used): Link. Discuss, ladies and gentlemen. Or at least point out the numerous simliarities to other pieces of fiction. |

Ok, I'm up to fighting the giant Golem at the end of the Warren, so it's time for a short review after about 16 hours of play in less than 2 days. It's just that great Platforming: This is, without a doubt, the best part of the game for me. Empire City may not be as vertically enormous as the real New York, but every single building is climbable, as well as pretty much everything else- trees, fences (unless they have barbed wire), momunents, pillars, you name it. Unlike some games like Mirror's Edge which require precision jumps, inFAMOUS is a lot more enjoyable. You won't run off an edge (you need to jump for Cole to get off of it), and the AI for Cole's jumping is actually incredible. He almost always jumps wherever I tell him to, like he can read my mind. He can climb anything, run across fences and power lines, and once you get far enough, Cole gets an excellent electrical grinding power for train tracks and power lines. Lightning: The aiming system can take a bit of time to get used too, since it zooms in like MGS4 and Uncharted's. I'd just like to mention that the graphics for the Lightning are simply incredible, and it looks extremely real and fluid. The Lightning can be used for more than just zapping as well, you can charge power sources, destroy rusty metals to create new paths, and electrify water to use as a trap. Hell, even walking on the water electrifies it. However, with great power, comes great chances for damage. Water is now your enemy as well as your friend. One dip in Empire Bay or one of the city's proud canals, or even in the sewers, and you have seconds to escape. There's a huge host of powers, and Light and Dark variations of each, guaranteed to keep you amused for hours! Characters: Most of the characters are fairly good, Cole's either a realistic good guy, or an a-hole, Zeke is the friend who desperately wants to help, but craves powers, Trish is the ex-girlfriend who hates Cole because her sister died in the explosion and John is the mysterious guy running who's story will open light onto yours. This is a good time to mention that for the TV segments (USA News and the Voice of Survival) they actually used real filmed footage for it. Most of the character models are fairly good, but Trish's is terrible. Her face looks like a 3 year-old made it out of play-doh, and she moves like a puppet. EDIT AGAIN: Beat it as a Hero. He comes the last parts: Boss fights: Honestly, I liked these. Yes, but my standards, they were a bit generic, but it really felt like I was playing a superhero. Especially the last fight, that is exactly what a superhero big boss should be like. Your powerful, but he's super-powerful. I had to spend half an hour on that fight, but it was pretty punishing whittling him down to 2.5/5s then dying and having to start from 4/5s when it takes about 5 minutes to take off 1/5th. Am I making sense? Cutscenes: These honestly needed a mention. They were the icing on the cake, completing the superhero game. Comic books! Who woulda thought? I've seen a lot of complaints, but a lot of work has gone into these, and you should really appreciate how beautiful these are. I just wish there were more of them. Room for a sequel: Are you kidding me? Pretty much the entire game was one big lead up! If they don't make a sequel, I'll throw myself off a bridge. The only problem is, making a canon ending, and dealing with Cole's uber powers not making it too easy. Mind you, they could easily do a Mass Effect, carrying over previous data. However, a sequel must be made after the ball-dropping revelation at the end! I **** bricks! Final verdict: One of the best games I've seen for a long time, and certainly the best sandbox (and the best superhero) game. However, there are some minor points, like how I got stuck a lot, and even fell through the ground and died several times. Also, go back and do some more work on Trish, for a major character, her model sucked. Final score: 9.5 Edited by Blade-Angel, Jun 14 2009, 08:48 AM.
